Transient Water Quality Network were evaluated and compared using actual water-quality data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. The field data were taken from steady-state studies of the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, the Willamette River in Oregon, and the Arkansas River in Colorado. The data used to evaluate the models covered a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological conditions. The Willamette River is a large sluggish stream, whereas the Arkansas River is a small dynamic stream. The Chattahoochee River is of moderate size. Each stream has unique water-quality characteristics that test a wide range of model options. Sedimentary structures, such as channeled contacts, laminated bedding, cross-stratification and clast-imbrication indicate that most of the deposits were transported and laid down by running water. These deposits are described and their facies relationships are illustrated in the 'Late Cenozoic Stratigraphy' section of this report (see Figures 17, and 26, and Table 9). \r\n\r\nSediment shed from the Diablo Range accumulated primarily as a complex of coalescing alluvial fans on the piedmont slope of a San Joaquin Valley that at one time extended across the foothill belt to the present margin of the central Diablo Range; and as local fills within stream valleys of the Diablo Range foothills tributary to the San Joaquin Valley. These deposits are well exposed in Interstate-5 roadcuts, California Aqueduct and Delta-Mendota canal cuts, and stream banks along the many ephemeral and intermittent streams draining the Diablo Range. \r\n\r\nSediment derived from the Sierra Nevada is confined primarily to the floodbasin of the San Joaquin Valley. It includes arkosic riverine and floodbasin deposits from the San Joaquin River and associated sloughs, as well as local ephemeral and perennial pond, swamp, oxbow-lake and lake deposits. These deposits are well-exposed in stream banks of the San Joaquin River and a few of the larger sloughs such as Salt Slough, Mud Slough and Kings Slough. Well-sorted, fine- and medium-grained, quartzose, cross-bedded sand, presumably derived from the Sierra Nevada, locally interfinger with or underlie fine-grained Coast Range alluvial-fan deposits. The sand probably originated by eolian reworking of Sierran alluvium from the floodbasin of the lower San Joaquin River or from fans of the northeastern San Joaquin Valley. These deposits are locally well exposed in Interstate-5 roadcuts, primarily between Orestimba and Garzas Creeks. \r\n\r\nThe geomorphic character of the alluvium laid down by streams draining the Diablo Range reflects late Cenozoic uplift of the foothills and subsidence of the valley. Within the foothills and near the foothill-valley margin, the deposits form a sequence of inset stream terraces and nested alluvial fans. Valleyward, however, each deposit forms a veneer over older alluvial-fan deposits. \r\n\r\nBased primarily on geomorphic and pedologic indicators of relative age (see Figure 19 and Table 10), and to a lesser extent on lithologic and absolute age criteria, the late Cenozoic deposits are divided into five stratigraphic units. In order of decreasing age, these include the formally recognized Tulare Formation (Watts, 1894; Anderson, 1905) of late Pliocene and Pleistocene age, and the informally named Los Banos alluvium of middle and late Pleistocene age, San Luis Ranch alluvium of late Pleistocene and early Holocene age, and Patterson alluvium and Dos Palos alluvium of Holocene age. The Los Banos and San Luis Ranch alluvium are further divided into three and two members, respectively. Each of these members ranges in thickness from less than I m up to 15 m and thus represents, at least in part, a distinct period of aggradation. \r\n\r\nThe lithology age and distribution of these units is described in the 'Stratigraphie Divisions' section of this report and is summarized in Figure 25 and Table 11. Plates 1 through 23 show the local distribution of these units on 7.5-minute Quadrangles. Mapping criteria are diagrammatically illustrated in Figure 19 and described in the 'Mapping Criteria' section of this report. \r\n\r\nIndirect evidence suggests that deposition of these units resulted primarily from climatic change rather than intermittent uplift of the Diablo Range. The units are recognized throughout 1500 Km","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82526","usgsCitation":"Lettis, W.R., 1982, Late Cenozoic stratigraphy and structure of the western margin of the central San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-526, 203 p.  :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82526.","productDescription":"203 p.  :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143968,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37828,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37829,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37830,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37831,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37832,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37833,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37834,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37835,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37836,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37837,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37838,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37839,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37840,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37841,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37842,"rank":414,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-15.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37843,"rank":415,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-16.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37844,"rank":416,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-17.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37845,"rank":417,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-18.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37846,"rank":418,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-19.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37847,"rank":419,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-20.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37848,"rank":420,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-21.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37849,"rank":421,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-22.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37850,"rank":422,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-23.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37851,"rank":423,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-24.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37852,"rank":424,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-25.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37853,"rank":425,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/plate-26.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37854,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0526/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8c7f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lettis, William R.","contributorId":85970,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lettis","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160676,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It ranges in thickness from 2600 m in the Atigun River area to 700 m south of Anaktuvuk Pass and has been subdivided into four regionally persistent members: (a) the basal sandstone member, consisting of marine sandstone and shale with some conglomerate; (b) the lower shale member, consisting of nonmarine quartzite, conglomerate and shale; (c) the middle conglomerate member, consisting of nonmarine pebble and cobble conglomerate and quartzite; and (d) the Stuver Member, consisting of nonmarine sandstone and shale. The Kanayut conformably overlies the Upper Devonian marine Hunt Fork Shale and is conformably overlain by the Mississippian marine Kayak Shale. The Kanayut is wholly allochthonous and has probably been transported northward on a series of thrust plates. \r\n\r\nThe basal sandstone member of the Kanayut Conglomerate, which overlies prodelta turbidites of the Hunt Fork Shale, contains marginal-marine coarsening-upward channel-mouth bar sequences. It is conformably overlain by the lower shale member. \r\n\r\nMeasured sections of the nonmarine members of the Kanayut show that the lower shale member ranges in thickness from 120 m to 1115 m and consists of fining-upward cycles interpreted to have been deposited by meandering streams on a broad floodplain. These cycles contain, in ascending order, channelized basal conglomerate, trough cross-stratified sandstone, and ripple-marked siltstone. The cycles are interpreted to be channel and point-bar deposits. Individual cycles average about 10 m in thickness and are separated by intervals of black, brown or maroon floodplain shale deposits. These typically contain thin coarsening-upward units that probably represent prograding levee sequences and irregular and ungraded sandstone bodies interpreted to be crevasse-splay deposits. In the Okokmilaga River area, the lower shale member contains a distinctive coarse-grained unit which is burrowed and interpreted to represent a widespread marine incursion. \r\n\r\nThe middle conglomerate member, which ranges in thickness from 155 m to 525 m, consists of braidplain deposits. It contains fining-upward couplets of conglomerate and parallel-stratified or cross-stratified sandstone that average 2-7 m in thickness. The couplets record deposition in channels and on bars of braided streams. The middle conglomerate member contains the largest clasts, little or no shale, and represents the maximum progradation of nonmarine sedimentation in the Kanayut depositional system. \r\n\r\nThe Stuver Member consists of fining-upward cycles that resemble those of the lower shale member. It ranges in thickness from 160 m to 1400 m and grades upward into tidal and marginal-marine deposits of the Kayak Shale. \r\n\r\nConglomerate in the Kanayut is compositionally very mature, averaging 82 percent white, gray, black or red chert clasts, 14 percent vein quartz clasts, 3 percent quartzite clasts, and less than I percent other lithologies, mainly argillite. Although red chert is locally abundant in the Shainin Lake-Galbraith Lake area, there is little variation in conglomerate composition in the Kanayut, suggesting derivation from a single major source terrane.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82199","usgsCitation":"Nilsen, T.H., Moore, T., Balin, D.F., and Johnson, S.Y., 1982, Sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Kanayut Conglomerate, central Brooks Range, Alaska: Report of 1980 field season: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-199, iv, 81 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82199.","productDescription":"iv, 81 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410493,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75624.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":34953,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0199/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140441,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0199/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"central Brooks Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -154.4667,\n              67.8333\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.5,\n              67.8333\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.5,\n              68.45\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.4667,\n              68.45\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.4667,\n              67.8333\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e3c15","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nilsen, T. Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together, the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southeastern Steuben County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, potentiometric-surface elevations, and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt, sand, and gravel, glacial-outwash (sand and gravel), till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities, whereas the till and silt deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in unconfined sand and gravel along the valley margin. Artesian conditions are found locally in sand and gravel confined under silt and clay in the middle of the valley. Recharge occurs nearly everywhere on the valley floor, but principally along the margin of the valley, where highly permeable land surface conditions exist, and runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The use of land overlying the aquifer is a mixture of residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial uses.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8285","usgsCitation":"Miller, T.S., Belli, J.L., and Allen, R.V., 1982, Geohydrology of the valley-fill aquifer in the Corning area, Steuben County, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-85, 6 Plates: \t40.44 × 30.18 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8285.","productDescription":"6 Plates: \t40.44 × 30.18 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":52489,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52484,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":403284,"rank":8,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_45786.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":52488,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52487,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52486,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52485,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0085/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","county":"Steuben County","otherGeospatial":"Corning area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.208,\n              42.008\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.967,\n              42.008\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.967,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.208,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.208,\n              42.008\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a87dc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, Todd S.","contributorId":85623,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":189482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Belli, J. Most of the flow originates from the tributaries, the Soleduck, Bogachiel, and Calawah Rivers. Flow in the summer months from the Calawah River is about half that from either the Bogachiel or Soleduck Rivers. In the winter months flow from the Soleduck River is about 1 1/2 times that of the Bogachiel or Calawah Rivers. In general, the highest monthly flows during the winter are about 10 times greater than the lowest monthly flows during the summer except for the Dickey River where winter flows are about 20 times greater. Annual mean discharges may vary greatly from year to year, ranging from about 1/2 to 1 1/2 times the mean annual discharge. For the study period, the observed suspended-sediment concentration ranged from less than 1 to 2 ,150 milligrams per liter. The estimated mean annual suspended-sediment discharges were: Bogachiel River--400,000 tons (includes Calawah River); Calawah River--120,000 tons; Soleduck River--120,000 tons; Dickey River--75,000 tons; and other tributaries--10,000 tons, for a total of 606,000 tons transported annually by the Quillayute River. The estimated annual bedload of 21,000 tons was transported into the Quillayute River by the Soleduck, Bogachiel, and Dickey Rivers. During 1980, 98 teleseismic events were recorded at as many as 53 sites in this area. P-wave residuals were calculated relative to a network-wide average residual for each event and are displayed on maps of the stations for each of four event-azimuth quadrants. Fluctuations in these map-patterns of residuals with approach azimuth combined with results of linear, three-dimensional inversions of some 2887 residuals indicate the following characteristics of the velocity structure of the southern Nevada region: 1) a low-velocity body exists in the upper crust 50 km northeast of Beatty, Nevada, near the Miocene Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon caldera complex. Another highly-localized low-velocity anomaly occurs near the southwest corner of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). These two anomalies seem to be part of a low-velocity trough extending from Death Valley, California, to about 50 km north of NTS. 2) There is a high-velocity body in the mantle between 81 and 131 km deep centered about i0 km north of the edge of the Timber Mountain caldera, 3) a broad low-velocity body is delineated between 81 and 131 km deep centered about 30 km north of Las Vegas, 4) there is a monotonic increase in travel-time delays from west to east across the region, probably indicating an eastward decrease in velocity, and lower than average velocities in southeastern Nevada below 31 km, and 5) considerable complexity in three-dimensional velocity structure exists in this part of the southern Great Basin. \r\n\r\nInversions of teleseismic P-wave travel-time residuals were also performed on data from 12 seismometers in the immediate vicinity of the Nevada Test Site to make good use of the closer station spacing i in that area. Results of these inversions show more details of the velocity structure but generally the same features as those found in the regional study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82409","usgsCitation":"Monfort, M.E., and Evans, J.R., 1982, Three-dimensional modeling of the Nevada Test Site and vicinity from teleseismic P-wave residuals: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-409, 70 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82409.","productDescription":"70 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142336,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38215,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Monfort, Mary E.","contributorId":93491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Monfort","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161296,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Evans, John R. jrevans@usgs.gov","contributorId":529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evans","given":"John","email":"jrevans@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161295,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Although this assertion seems self-evident, seismologists have only recently begun to derive and test quantitative relations between common measures of strong ground motion and the dynamic characteristics of faulting. Interest in this problem has increased dramatically in past several years, however, resulting in a number of important advances. The research presented in this workshop is a significant part of this scientific development. Data were collected at least weekly at five stations, and periodically at 15 stations and at two other stations near the mouth of the Potomac River in Chesapeake Bay. Each of the five stations represent a cross section at which the transport of selected dissolved and suspended materials can be computed. The remaining 17 stations are locations at which data were collected for special studies of selected phenomena, such as salt water migration and dissolved oxygen dynamics. Samples were routinely analyzed for chlorophyll-a, nitrogen, pheophytin, phosphorus, silica and suspended sediment. Additional samples were analyzed for adenosine triphosphate, algal growth potential, alkalinity, calcium, chloride, dissolved-solids residue, fluoride, iron, manganese, magnesium, nitrifying bacteria, organic carbon, potassium, seston, sodium, and sulfate. In addition, in-situ measurements of dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, pH, temperature, solar radiation, and secchi disk transparency were made. Wells, including three Municipal-supply wells, obtain water from two confined aquifers 100-300 feet beneath the landfill area. Aquifer-test data and information on subsurface geology, ground-water levels, and properties of materials were used to estimate vertical gradients and vertical permeabilities under the landfill. The authors ' best estimates ' of vertical permeabilities of two confining units are 1 x 10 super -2 foot per day and 2 x 10 super -4 foot per day. Theoretical travel-time calculations indicate that minor amounts of pollutants may reach the upper confined aquifer after many tens of years, but that water of the composition of the leachate probably would not reach the aquifer for more than three centuries. The range of error in the theoretical travel-time calculations is likely to be plus or minus a factor of two or three. The program's main purpose is to perform spectral analyses on digitized time-domain data. In addition, band-pass filtering of the data can be performed in the time domain. Various other processes such as autocorrelation can be performed to the time domain data in order to precondition them for spectral analyses. The frequency domain data can also be transformed back into the time domain if desired. Any data can be displayed on the CRT in graphic form using a variety of plot routines. A hard copy can be obtained immediately using the internal thermal printer. Data can also be displayed in tabular form on the CRT or internal thermal printer or it can be stored permanently on a mass storage device like a tape or disk. The measurements were made in mid-winter when pumping was minimal and water levels had recovered, for the most part, from the effects of pumping during the previous irrigation season. Annual hydrologic data are provided for relating water-level changes from a ' base-reference year ' (predevelopment year), a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974), and each of seven consecutive years of measurement (1976-82), the ' base-reference year ' is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas. Water levels for the ' base-reference year ' are established by measurements made during that year and by interpretation of maps showing water-level altitudes.
