The Kansas River channel, however, remains relatively unstable and locally active. Streamflow regulation and sediment trapping by reservoirs are possible causes of changes occurring at various Kansas River sites. An inferred deficiency of the suspended-sediment load, however, is likely to cause continuing instability. Suspended sediment in the Kansas River apparently is too sparse to form and maintain stable alluvial banks. The deficiency probably results in an increase of bed material movement, general channel widening, and local braiding. Significant channel degradation is lacking at most sites, but may occur in response to long-term (decades-to-centuries) regulation. Recent degradation near Bonner Springs, Kans., may be the result of sand and gravel removal. Any imposed changes that shorten the channel or reduce the suspended-sediment discharge of the Kansas River are expected to cause additional channel instability. The loss on fusion (LOF) results are comparable to the conventional time-consuming wet-chemical procedure but require no additional effort or cost when conducted as part of the usual sample preparation procedure for quantitative X-ray fluorescence spectrometric analysis (XRF). The technique utilizes the weight loss of the rock when fused with a suitable blend of lithium tetraborate and lithium nitrate. A simple mass balance model is used to represent the thermogravimetric results and to identify the nature of the high temperature mass alteration reactions taking place in the fusion melt. This study was undertaken to determine if any changes in flood response of the Red River basin can be documented. A review of the hydrologic setting, previous floods, flood-control measures, and probable effects of land-use changes shows that the flooding problem of the Red River basin is complex hydrologically, highly variable historically, and follows a regional pattern. Therefore, a change in flood response of the basin is difficult to identify. Infiltration of the sewage through the sand beds into the underlying unconfined sand and gravel aquifer has resulted in a plume of sewage-contaminated ground water that is 2,500 to 3,500 feet wide, 75 feet wide, and more than 11,000 feet long. The plume extends south and southwest of the sand beds in the same direction as the regional flow of around water, and is overlain by 20 to 50 feet of ground water derived from precipitation that recharges the aquifer. The bottom of the plume generally coincides with the contact between the permeable sand and gravel and underlying finer grained sediments.</p><p>The distributions in the aquifer of specific conductance, temperature, boron, chloride, sodium, phosphorus, nitrogen (total of all species), ammonia, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and detergents are used to delineate the plume. In ground water outside the plume, the detergent concentration is less than 0.1 milligrams per liter as MBAS (methylene blue active substances), the ammonia-nitrogen concentration is less than 0.1 milligrams per liter, the boron concentration is less than 50 micrograms per liter, and specific conductance is less than 80 micromhos per centimeter. In the center of the plume, detergent concentrations as high as 2.6 milligrams per liter as MBAS, ammonia-nitrogen concentrations as high as 20 milligrams per liter, boron concentrations as high as 400 micrograms per liter, and specific conductance as high as 405 micromhos per centimeter were measured.</p><p>Chloride, sodium, and boron are transported by the southward-flowing ground water without significant retardation, and seem to be diluted only by hydrodynamic dispersion. The movement of phosphorus is greatly restricted by sorption. Phosphorus concentrations do not exceed 0.05 milligrams per liter farther than 2,500 feet from the sand beds. Detergent concentrations in the plume are highest between 3,000 and 10,000 feet from the sand beds and reflect the introduction of nonbiodegradable detergents in 1946 and the conversion to biodegradable detergents in 1964.</p><p>The center of the plume as far as 5,000 feet from the sand beds contains nitrogen as ammonia, but no nitrate and no dissolved oxygen. Ammonia is gradually oxidized to nitrate between 5,000 and 8,000 feet from the sand beds, and at distances greater than 8,000 feet oxidation of ammonia is essentially complete. Ammonia also is oxidized to nitrate along the top and sides of the plume within 5,000 feet of the beds where the contaminated ground water mixes with uncontaminated ground water that contains up to 11 milligrams per liter dissolved oxygen.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82274","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering, Division of Water Pollution Patrol","usgsCitation":"LeBlanc, D., 1982, Sewage plume in a sand and gravel aquifer, Cape Cod, Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-274, iv, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82274.","productDescription":"iv, 35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405420,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0274/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143337,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0274/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9114990234375,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9114990234375,\n              42.120635949743644\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              42.120635949743644\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f4b14","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LeBlanc, Denis","contributorId":11363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeBlanc","given":"Denis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160598,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose of the reconnaissance was to determine selected quality characteristics of the surface- and ground-water of the landfill and contiguous area; and to assess, generally, if leachate produced by the decomposition of landfill wastes was adversely impacting the downgradient water quality. Sampling results indicated that several water-quality characteristics were present in landfill ground water at significantly higher levels than in ground water upgradient or downgradient from the landfill. Moreover, many of these water-quality characteristics were found at slightly higher levels at down gradient site 5 than at upgradient site 1 which suggested that some downgradient movement of landfill leachate had occurred. For example, chloride and alkalinity in ground water had average concentrations of 20 and 290 mg/L at background wells (site 1), 144 and 610 mg/L at landfill wells (sites 2 and 4), and 29 and 338 mg/L at downgradient wells (site 5). A comparison of the 1977-78 sampling results with the National Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Regulations indicated that levels of iron and color in ground water of the study area frequently exceeded national maximum contaminant levels, dissolved solids, turbidity, lead, and manganese occasionally exceeded regulations. Concentrations of iron and levels of color and turbidity in some surface water samples also exceeded National maximum contaminant levels. The digital model was prepared during an earlier study and is only briefly described. Continuous withdrawal of more than 1.0 Mgal/d from a well screened from 10 to 40 feet below sea level at the test site will result in upward movement of the freshwater-saltwater interface, and most likely saltwater will eventually contaminate the well. Pumping from a shallower well will decrease the potential for the movement of saltwater into the well, but the water table may be drawn down to the well screen. It is unlikely that movement of the freshwater-saltwater interface in response to pumping from the test site at the simulated rates will result in saltwater contamination of the shallow domestic supply wells in Truro. For the simulated pumping schemes, the water-table decline below average (1963-76) levels did not exceed 0.6 foot except near the pumping wells. The water-level declines are the result of increases in municipal pumping since July 1978. The increase in municipal pumping was part of a basin-testing program to determine the usable quantity of ground water in storage. The pumping, centered in the city less than 1 mile from the coast, has caused water-level declines in the main water-bearing zones to altitudes below sea level. Consequently, the ground-water basin is threatened with saltwater intrusion if the present pumpage is maintained or increased.</span></div><div><span><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></span></div><div><span>Data indicate that saltwater intrusion has degraded the quality of water yielded from six coastal wells. Chloride concentrations in the most recent samples from coastal wells ranged from about 250 to 3,800 milligrams per liter. Four of the wells yielded water with chloride concentrations in excess of 1,000 milligrams per liter.</span></div><div><span><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></span></div><div><span>Previous investigators believed that saltwater intrusion was limited to the shallow part of the aquifer directly adjacent to the coast. The possibility of saltwater intrusion into the deeper water-bearing deposits in the aquifer was thought to be remote because an offshore fault truncates these deeper deposits against consolidated rocks on the seaward side of the fault. Results of this study indicate, however, that ocean water has intruded into the deeper water-bearing deposits to a much greater extent than in the shallow part of the aquifer. Apparently the offshore fault is not an effective barrier to saltwater intrusion.</span></div><div><span><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></span></div>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82366","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Santa Barbara","usgsCitation":"Martin, P., 1982, Ground-water monitoring at Santa Barbara, California; Phase 2-effects of pumping on water levels and water quality in the Santa Barbara ground-water basins: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-366, v, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82366.","productDescription":"v, 53 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405489,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0366/repport.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143062,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0366/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Santa Barbara","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64111328125,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64111328125,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db66743f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, Peter pmmartin@usgs.gov","contributorId":799,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Peter","email":"pmmartin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":160963,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This paper summarizes some of the information on the occurrence of potential local supplies of water in the Piceance Creek Basin-Uinta Basin areas of northwest Colorado and northeast Utah. The discussion is somewhat hypothetical in that it is restricted to the physical occurrence of water with emphasis on water resources in each basin. Of course, the many potential constraints on water use (including economics, water quality, legal and other institutional factors) are necessarily secondary to the ultimate constraint, its physical occurrence. Perhaps the most obvious constraint is that of water rights and water laws. For example, \"mining\" of some of the ground water is herein assumed to be necessary for technically sound management and utilization of the water resource, but the hydrologic effects of such \"mining\" would require accommodation under water laws and agreements.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8231","usgsCitation":"Miller, G., 1982, Water for western oil shale development: Potential local supplies: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-31, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8231.","productDescription":"6 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143503,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0031/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":407297,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0031/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Utah","otherGeospatial":"Piceance Creek Basin, Uinta Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.2537841796875,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.2537841796875,\n              40.925964939514294\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.925964939514294\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.9893798828125,\n              40.17047886718109\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa1f2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, G.A.","contributorId":107671,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"G.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During 1980 and 1981 (through July 1981) precipitation totals at Lake Gregory were the maximum and minimum for the 19-year period of record. The average annual precipitation for the 3-year period 1979-81 was 47.4 inches, almost 10 inches greater than the long-term average, 1962-81, of 37.8 inches. Surface-water runoff in the Lake Gregory basin is highly dependent on annual precipitation, and total outflow for the 1980 water year and partial total for the 1981 (through June) water year was 7,230 acre-feet and 400 acre-feet, respectively. An activity profile of cumulative drainage area versus river miles downstream from the surface mining site is constructed that shows major water uses, flood prone areas, and stream classifications. From the summary shown by the activity profile, an impact matrix is used as a checklist for the importance of the impacts under categories such as water supply, flood prone areas, water contact recreation, etc. Based on the categories checked on the impact matrix, a simple, less accurate model or a more comprehensive and accurate one can be used to quantify the impacts. Quantified impacts are then displayed on an impact profile showing the percentage change in a hydrologic characteristic versus distance downstream of the surface mining site. The simple model for quantification considers only dilution from tributary areas during critical periods whereas the comprehensive model routes flows and quality of water continuously through the year and considers, in addition to dilution, instream processes such as settling, biological uptake , and chemical reactions. These logs include natural gamma, electric, caliper, temperature, fluid conductivity, and fluid velocity. Most of the logs are for wells in the Coastal Plain Province of eastern Virginia. Geophysical logs aid in the interpretation of properties of earth materials, including the capacity to store and transmit water in the immediate vicinity of the well bore.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82432","usgsCitation":"Mulheren, M.P., Larson, J.D., and Hopkins, H.T., 1982, An index of geophysical well logging in Virginia by the U.S. Geological Survey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-432, iii, 37 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82432.","productDescription":"iii, 37 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145865,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0432/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38305,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0432/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db6846c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mulheren, M.
