These aquifers are the chief sources of water beneath the coal-bearing rocks of the Pennsylvanian System and are widely use for farm and home requirements. The aquifers crop out in the western part of the area and dip southeastward 35 feet per mile. At Lake Hope, in northeastern Vinton County, the aquifers are the deepest sources of ground water in Ohio, occurring at depths locally exceeding 700 feet. At McArthur, in Vinton County, the aquifers yield about 300,000 gallons per day for municipal and industrial use, but withdrawal has been accompanied by declining ground-water levels during the past 10 years in a 10-square-mile area. The objectives of these surveys of the Continental Slope and upper Rise, including Wilmington Canyon and the adjacent margin, were to extend existing geophysical coverage to the south of Wilmington Canyon and to provide detailed geologic and geophysical data on the poss.ible origin and evolution of submarine canyons and on sediment transport and other processes within the canyon domain. The geology of this area near Wilmington Canyon was discussed by McGregor, Stubblefield, and others and Stubblefield and others.</p><p>On ENDEAVOR Cruise 80-EN-056, during October 9-10, 1980, a series of 3.5-kHz profiles was collected. The objective of acquiring these data was to supplement data from GYRE 80-G-7B so that a bathymetric map based on 1-km-spaced grid of data could be constructed. The 3.5-k.Hz system consisted of a hull-mounted transducer and a signal correlator. Ship's speed during the survey was 10 knots (18 km/hr). Data were recorded on a strip chart at a 1-second sweep rate. Navigational control for the cruise was based on Loran C. All times given on the data and navigation plots are in Greenwich mean time (GMT or Z).</p><p>The quality of the records is very good, although time marks had to be added manually. Maximum subbottom penetration was approximately 100 m.</p><p>Original records may be viewed at the u.s. Geological Survey, Woods Hole, MA 02543. The sand-plain areas are generally overlain by sandy soils that permit rapid infiltration of precipitation and, possibly, of surface contaminants. One hundred twenty-five wells were sampled in Hubbard, Morrison, Otter Tail, and Wadena Counties during 1979-81 to establish regional baseline water quality. The wells were chosen to provide optimum areal coverage based on geology, direction of ground-water flow, and extent of aquifer development.</p>\n<p>Water from the sand-plain aquifers is of the calcium bicarbonate type. The water is hard to very hard with dissolved solids ranging from about 100 to 700 milligrams per liter. Locally, concentrations of dissolved solids, iron, manganese, and nitrate exceeded limits recommended by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The analyses of samples collected routinely included: nutrients, total organic carbon, and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, bimonthly; and trace metals, annually. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year: radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. These constituents are determined in addition to nutrients, total organic carbon, and bio-chemical oxygen demand which continue to be analyzed six times per year. All results of analyses of the water-quality samples collected from January through December 1980 remained within, or near, previously measured ranges and water-quality fluctuations were similar to those noted from data collected since 1971. A discharge equaled or exceeded about 90 percent of the time was measured at Grand Traverse Street in Flint before dye injection. Dye was injected at two locations in Flint--at Utah Dam and at Grand Traverse Street, From Utah Dam to Grand Traverse Street, the mean velocity of flow was about 0.1 foot per second; time-of-travel was 35.3 hours. From Grand Traverse Street to Highway M-13, mean velocity was about 0.7 foot per second; time-of-travel was 78.8 hours. There has been some reluctance to adopt these systems in operational programmes because of a lack of assured continuity of data collection, continuing changes in the systems, and some dissatisfaction with the types of data made available to users. Nevertheless, there is sufficient conviction of the value of satellite remote sensing so that new systems will be developed by several countries in the decade of the 1980's. The status changes continuously as studies are completed, and budgets are adjusted. At these higher resolutions such satellites will perform inspection functions of high importance to government agencies and which are beyond the capabilities of the Landsat MSS.</p><p>There is considerable evidence that nations that cannot afford their own Earth-sensing satellites are willing to pay a suitable price for the capability of inspecting their own land and adjacent sea areas. A unit price of 25 cents per square km per year is suggested as a reasonable fee which would provide economic viability to a well defined satellite system such as the Mapsat defined by the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>This concept and pricing involve only the satellite and its data acquisition and transmission capability. Many of the Secretary's responsibilities have been delegated to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Minerals Management Service (MMS). An analytical method is presented which uses time-series concentrations of BOD, defined as the calculated sum of dissolved oxygen (DO) losses at each time of measurement, for determining BODu and K1. Time-series DO measurements are obtained from a water sample that is incubated in darkness at 20 degrees Celsius in the presence of nitrapyrin, a chemical nitrification inhibitor. Proterozoic crystalline rocks are exposed as inselbergs or rock pediment surfaces along the western border of the quadrangle. The crystalline basement is metavolcanic rock intruded by plutonic to hypabyssal rocks consisting of diorite and gabbro, biotite tonalite gneiss, biotite-hornblende monzogranite, biotite-sodic amphibole granite, and syenogranite to quartz syenite, listed in the inferred order of emplacement. Rhyolite-dacite fels, associated with andesitic to basaltic metavolcanic flow rocks and minor amphibolite, is interpreted to have resulted from metasomatic alteration of the flow rocks during emplacement of granitic plutons. \r\n\r\nThe Wajid Sandstone, of Cambrian to Ordovician age, is largely a coarse-grained quartz arenite with pebbly phases; common crossbedds indicate north-northwest to north-northeast directions of sand transport. Beds are cemented by iron oxide, carbonate, and minor quartz. The Wajid Sandstone is exposed only in the northwestern and northern parts of the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nQuaternary deposits record a climate that became increasingly more arid. They include Holocene and Pleistocene(?) alluvial and fluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and silt, minor carbonate crusts, and eolian sand and silt. Gravel terraces and gravel plains less than 10 m above the present major wadi channels are widespread and commonly are overlain by marly silt along the wadis. Between major wadis, which discharge into the Rub al Khali basin, gravel-topped surfaces are partly covered by a complex of low, sinuous, discontinuous, generally northwest trending transverse sand dunes. Normal to this trend, higher and more extensive linear dunes and dune complexes, including seif (irq) dunes as high as 50 m, have encroached southwestward. The transverse and linear dunes may represent two stages of advance separated by a pluvial cycle. During these periods, ground-water pumping decreased in Galveston County and eastern Harris County and increased in northern and western Harris County (Gabrysch and Ranzau, 1981).</p>\n<p>Water levels in about 550 wells were used to construct the maps showing water-level changes. Of these species, 43 showed detectable variation over the area, 31 were subjected to correlation analysis for the fine size fraction, and 30 for the coarse-size fraction. \r\n\r\nTwo populations distinguished in the surface water samples of this study (Suits and Wenrich, 1981) are not as clearly evident in the stream sediments. However, stream-sediment samples from streams draining the Boulder batholith and from streams draining volcanics and volcanogenic sediments (referred to only as volcanics) do show differences in their geochemical relationships, especially between SiO2, Al203 and Na2O versus U. Thus, the sediments were also treated statistically as two lithologic populations as well as two populations based on size fraction. \r\n\r\nIn the fine fraction samples, U ranged from 1.3 to 78 ppm, averaging 25 ppm for the Boulder batholith samples and 8 ppm for the volcanics samples. The range for the coarse fraction was 1.9 to 55 ppm with an average of 17 for the Boulder batholith group and 7 for the volcanics group. High U values (>50 ppm for the fine fraction) were encountered in samples from the Warm Springs Creek drainage area, along Prickly Pear Creek near Welmer and Golconda Creeks and along Muskrat Creek. \r\n\r\nAll groups showed a significant correlation at the 99 percent confidence level (r between 0.73 and 0.77) between U and Th. Uranium was found to correlate significantly only with Th (as mentioned above) and with -Ni in the fine fraction of the volcanics group. U correlates significantly with -Al2O3, Ba, organic C, -K2O, -Sr and Y in both size fractions for the Boulder batholith. Correlations between U and each of several elements differ for the fine and coarse fractions of the Boulder batholith group, suggesting that the U distribution in these stream sediments is in large part controlled by grain size. Correlations were found between U and CaO, Cr, Fe203, -Na2O, Sc, -SiO2, TiO2, Yb and Zr in the coarse fraction but not in the fine fraction. U correlates weakly (to the 90% confidence level, crc<.37) with -Co and -Cu in the fine but not the coarse fraction. These results are compared to a previous study in the northern Absaroka mountains. Five regions of shallow magnetic source bottom depths were detected: 1) Secret Spring Mountain and National Lava Beds Monument area, 2) the Mount Shasta area, 3) the Eddys Mountain area, 4) the Big Valley Mountains area, and 5) an area northeast of Lassen Peak. Except for the Eddys Mountain area, all regions exhibiting shallow depths are suggested to be due to elevated Curie-point isotherms. \r\n\r\nThe elevated Curie-point depth beneath Secret Spring Mountain and the National Lava Beds Monument area was found to be 4-7 km BSL (Below Sea Level) and is an extension of a zone mapped beneath an area immediately to the north in Oregon. A similar depth was detected for the Mount Shasta area and the area northeast of Lassen Peak. A depth of 4-6 km BSL was detected beneath the Big Valley Mountains area. The shallow Curie-point depths beneath Secret Spring Mountain, Mount Shasta, Big Valley Mountains, and the area northeast of Lassen Peak appear to form a segmented Zone of elevated Curie-point isotherm depths which underlies the High Cascade Mountains and Modoc Plateau in north-central California.
