In Precambrian rocks, deposit types favorable for exploration include: a banded iron formation; platinum-bearing mafic-ultramafic complexes; tin-bearing quartz veins; phosphorite; stratabound base-metal deposits; uranium associated with Precambrian(?) syenite; apatite, molybdenum, and alumina in alkalic rocks; Jurassic and Cretaceous black shales; possible bedded-barite and massive base- and precious-metal sulfide deposits; vein barite in Tertiary rocks in fault zones; sepiolite and bentonite for drilling muds and other industrial uses; celestite; possible Tertiary zeolite; and uranium deposits. \r\n\r\nSeveral of these deposit types could be Jointly developed and integrated into domestic industries; for example, phosphate and gypsum, or bentonite for pelletized iron from the banded iron deposits. Other deposits such as barite and sepiolite are of value because of their proximity to major drilling operations in the Arabian Gulf. Still other deposits, such as alumina and banded iron, might be marketable because of proximity to aluminum and iron-refining industries now being constructed in Saudi Arabia. Some deposits, such as celestite, can be developed with little capital investment; others, such as the iron deposits, would require large capital commitments. Exploration and evaluation for many of these deposits can be accomplished by Somali geologists with a few advisors. Most of the deposits require feasibility studies conducted by teams of economic geologists, extractive metallurgists, and economists. Some marginal deposits could be exploited if cooperative development schemes could be negotiated with governments in nearby countries.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82788","usgsCitation":"Greenwood, W., 1982, A preliminary evaluation of the nonfuel mineral potential of Somalia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-788, iii, 46 p., 4 over-size sheets, maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82788.","productDescription":"iii, 46 p., 4 over-size sheets, maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141777,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36877,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36878,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36879,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36880,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36881,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0788/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1fe4b07f02db6aac65","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greenwood, W.R.","contributorId":34502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greenwood","given":"W.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Although many of the zones are no more than a few meters wide, they commonly contain 50 to 80 percent carbonaceous material and locally abundant pyrite. In places, several thin layers of highly concentrated carbonaceous material interlayered with chert form a multiple conductive zone that is seen in the geophysical data as complex anomaly patterns. In the geologic environment of Wadi Bidah, massive sulfide-bearing zones cannot be distinguished from siliceous-carbonaceous zones on the basis of the EM-SP responses. In North America in similar environments, complex resistivity methods used in experimental research have successfully discriminated between sulfide and carbonaceous conductors. Tests of such methods in the Wadi Bidah district are recommended. \r\n\r\nGeologic, geochemical, and geophysical data at the Jabal Mohr prospect suggest the possibility of mineralized rocks at depth over a possible strike length of 400 m.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82597","usgsCitation":"Flanigan, V.J., Sadek, H., and Smith, C.W., 1982, Phase 3 geophysical studies in the Wadi Bidah District, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-597, ii, 47 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82597.","productDescription":"ii, 47 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142175,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0597/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36429,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0597/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686875","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Flanigan, V. Average compositions have been calculated for apatites from 14 types of rocks. These show a progressive change of composition from apatites of granitic pegmatites, highest in the heavy lanthanides and yttrium, to those from alkalic pegmatites, highest in the light lanthanides and lowest in yttrium. This progression is clearly shown in plots of S (= at % La+Ce+Pr) vs the ratio La/Nd and of S vs the ratio 100Y/(Y+Ln), where Ln is the sum of the lanthanides. \r\n\r\nApatites of sedimentary phosphorites occupy a special position, being relatively depleted in Ce and relatively enriched in yttrium and the heavy lanthanides, consequences of deposition from sea water. \r\n\r\nApatites associated with iron ores are close in composition to apatites of carbonatites, alkalic ultramafic, and ultramafic rocks, being enriched in the light lanthanides and depleted in the heavy lanthanides. Their compositions do not support the hypothesis of Parak that the Kiruna-type ores are of sedimentary origin. \r\n\r\nTable 9 and Figures 1-3 show the dependence of lanthanide distribution on the nature of the host rock. It is widely recognized that gamma ray and density logs are useful in identifying thickness and stratigraphic position of coal beds. In addition, gamma ray and electrical resistivity logs can be used to infer conditions of transportation and deposition of sandstones, siltstones, and other rock types. In particular, intensity responses of the gamma ray and resistance logs provide a clue to variations of grain size such as fining-upward and coarsening-upward characteristics of fluvial channel and crevasse splay deposits, respectively. These signatures in the geophysical logs are readily observed for some beds; for other beds however, the depositional conditions are difficult to determine because the beds do not produce clear-cut log-response patterns. In areas where surface water replaced withdrawal of ground-water, water levels in the confined system rose sharply and subsidence slowed. In the late 1960 's and early 1970 's water levels in wells recovered to levels of the 1940 's and 1950 's throughout most of the western and southern parts of the Valley, in response to the importation of surface water through the California aqueduct. During the 1976-77 drought data collected at water-level and extensometer sites showed the effect of heavy demand on the ground-water resevoir. With the ' water of compaction ' gone, artesian head declined 10 to 20 times as fast as during the first cycle of long-term drawdown that ended in the late 1960's. In the 1978-79 water levels recovered to or above the 1976 pre-drought levels. The report suggests continued monitoring of land subsidence in the San Joaquin Valley. This percentage represents a decrease from 505 million gallons per day (22.1 cubic meters per second) during 1975, to 456 million gallons per day (20.0 cubic meters per second) during 1979. The decrease resulted from an increased use of surface water that became available from Lake Livingston on the Trinity River during late 1976. During 1975-79, withdrawals of ground water decreased in the Pasadena, Katy, Baytown-La Porte, Johnson Space Center, Texas City, and Alta Loma areas but increased in the Houston area. The decreased withdrawals in the Katy area resulted partly from a small decrease in the acreage of rice planted, but mostly from a decrease in water needed for irrigation during 1979. The pumping of ground water increased in the Houston area because of the growth in population.</p>\n<p>From spring 1975 to spring 1980, water levels rose in the southeastern one-half of the district and declined in the northwestern one-half. The maximum rise of water levels in wells in the Chicot aquifer was 110 feet (33.5 meters); the maximum rise in wells in the Evangeline aquifer was 150 feet (45.7 meters). The maximum decline of water levels in wells in the Chicot aquifer was 60 feet (18.3 meters); the maximum decline in wells in the Evangeline aquifer was 70 feet (21.3 meters).</p>\n<p>No significant changes occurred in the chloride concentration in water from wells in the Alta Loma area during 1975-79. The concentration of chloride in water from a well completed in the middle part of the Chicot aquifer at Hitchcock is increasing, probably because of updip migration of the freshwater-saltwater interface.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82431","usgsCitation":"Gabrysch, R., 1982, Ground-water withdrawals and changes in water levels in the Houston District, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-431, Report: vi, 39 p.; 10 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82431.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 39 p.; 10 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":36564,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36565,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36566,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36567,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36568,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36569,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36570,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36571,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36572,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36573,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":36574,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141122,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0431/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cbe4b07f02db543a1b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gabrysch, R.K.","contributorId":105691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gabrysch","given":"R.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158604,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The drill hole, 1050 feet FEL, 700 feet FNL, sec. 3, T. 12 S., R. 24 E., Uintah County, Utah, started slightly below the contact between the Uinta Formation, also of Eocene age, and the underlying Green River Formation. It ended 32 feet below the base of the Mahogany bed (the richest oil-shale bed between A groove and B groove--which define the upper and lower boundaries, respectively, of the Mahogany zone). Most of the interval studied is kerogen- or carbonate-rich, commonly tuffaceous, and is very fine grained. \r\n\r\nSeveral thin (<3 feet) oil-shale beds which yield as much as 25 gallons of oil per ton occur above the Mahogany zone, but are probably not of economic interest. The cored sequence contains several tuff beds. The thickest of these beds is approximately 2 feet thick; the average thickness is rarely greater than 0.5 feet. Two oil-saturated tuff beds occur approximately 65 feet above the Mahogany oil-shale bed. Although these two tuffs are exposed on nearby surface outcrops, no evidence of oil is seen on outcrop. The Mahogany zone is approximately 69 feet thick at the drill site; the lowermost few feet were not penetrated. At the site cored, the Mahogany zone is overlain by 435 feet of overburden. Fischer assays indicate that 42.3 feet of oil shale within the Mahogany zone could yield at least 25 gallons of oil per ton from beds at least 10 feet thick.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82528","usgsCitation":"Keighin, C.W., 1982, Characteristics and description of cores from the USGS core hole CRU-1, Parachute Creek Member, Green River Formation, east-central Uinta Basin, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-528, i, 46 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82528.","productDescription":"i, 46 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142199,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0528/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37527,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0528/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e3e4b07f02db5e5592","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keighin, C. Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 30 gaging stations, flow duration at 13 gaging stations, and selected low-flow frequency characteristics at 22 low-flow partial-record stations and 123 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. Drainage area and base-flow index were the most significant characteristics in explaining the variation in low flow for sites where one low base-flow measurement (flow durations greater than 80%) has been made. The equations and corresponding standard errors of estimate are computed. Low-flow characteristics are not well defined in the Lake Michigan basin. Standard errors for low-flow characteristics at gaging stations, low-flow partial-record stations, and miscellaneous sites are much higher than State averages. The standard errors for the regression equations are also very high. This is due in part to the flow of many streams in the basin approaching 0 ft/s during low base-flow periods. The graphical regression relation lines are steep for stations on these streams and the resulting standard errors are relatively high.
