One set was made in 1977, a relatively dry year, and the other set was made in 1980, another relatively dry year. The map shows that the potentiometric surface was higher in 1980, by as much as 9 feet, than it was in 1977, in a band a few miles wide near the outcrop and subcrop areas of the aquifer in northern Prince Georges County and central Anne Arundel County. In the remainder of the map area, the 1980 potentiometric surface was lower than it had been in 1977, with declines as great as 20 feet measured in well fields at Waldorf and Chalk Point. The network of observation wells was developed and is operated and maintained as part of the cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey and agencies of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The computer program generated estimated values of selected hydrologic data at the center of each 1-mile section in the Western Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 1. This program facilitated contouring of the data that are needed to aid in the management of ground water for irrigation. The kriging technique produced a map that illustrates the percentage change in saturated thickness of the High Plains aquifer from 1950 to average 1980-82 in west-central Kansas. Estimated changes in saturated thickness of the aquifer, as shown on the map, range from about a 50% increase to a 100% decrease. Geohydrologic data are compiled on seven maps at 1:24 ,000 scale. Together the maps provide a comprehensive overview of the principal aquifer in western Oswego County. The set includes surficial geology, geologic sections, soil permeability , water-table altitude, aquifer thickness, estimated well yield, and land use. The instrument used was a Geometrics Model GR-101A, mounted in the helicopter. The data, in counts per second (cps), were obtained at most of the sites by the helicopter pilot (Svec) while geologists were occupying the sample site. Scintillometer localities are indicated on the map by a dot.</p><p>The sites are concentrated in the southeastern part of the map area where previous work (OF 81-253) had outlined an area with anomalously high cps. The bedrock at these sites is a Late Tertiary hornblende granodiorite instrusive dated at 9.4 my. Hornfelsed sedimentary rock overlying the batholith gave cps nearly as high as the intrusive rock. Samples routinely checked by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis for thorium failed to detect the element.&nbsp;</p><p>In general the Ugashik and Karluk quadrangles have a low level of gamma radiation. A majority of the sites, 52 percent, gave readings of less than 35 cps, and only 10 percent had values of greater than cps. Thick alluvium or glacial deposits generally gave low values. Readings from sedimentary bedrock were extremely erratic and no generalization can be made concerning their level of gamma radiation. Drainage basins are shown for all U.S. Geological Survey data-collection sites and for mouths of major rivers. Drainage basins are shown for the outlets of lakes or ponds and for streams where the drainage area is greater than 3 square miles. Successive sites along watercourses are indicated where the intervening area is at least 6 square miles on tributary streams or 10 square miles along the Chicopee River, or 20 square miles along the Connecticut River.
