The west half of the area is in the Basin and Range lowlands water province, and the east half is in the Central high-lands water province (see index map). The Basin and Range lowlands province generally is characterized by high mountains separated by broad valleys filled with deposits that commonly store large amounts of ground water. The Central highlands province consists mostly of rugged mountain masses made up of igneous, metamorphic, and well-consolidated sedimentary rocks that contain little space for the storage of ground water except where highly fractured or faulted. A few small valleys between the mountains contain varying thicknesses of water.-bearing deposits. The area is drained by the Bill Williams River and its major tributaries-the Big Sandy River and the Santa Maria River. Many reaches of the Big Sandy and Santa Maria Rivers and their major tributaries are perennial; the flow is sustained by ground-water discharge (Brown and others, 1978, sheet 2). In the Bill Williams area most of the water used is from ground water, although a small amount of surface water also may be diverted. About 18,000 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn in 1979 (U.S. Geological Survey, 1981). About 17,000 acre-ft was used for the irrigation of 5,200 acres, and the rest was used for domestic, stock, and public supplies. Most of the irrigated land is in Skull Valley and along lower Kirkland Creek and the Bill Williams River. Only selected wells are shown on the maps in areas of high well density. The hydrologic data on which these maps are based are available, for the most part, in computer-printout form and may be consulted at the Arizona Department of Water Resources, 99 East Virginia, Phoenix, and at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson, and Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix. Some of the analytical procedures yield determinations for specific compounds, whereas others provide a measure of the quantity of groups of compounds present in the sample. Examples of the first category are procedures for the organochlorine and organophosphate insecticides, chlorophenoxy acid and triazine herbicides and specific substituted phenols. Examples of the second category are the various organic carbon analyses and the polychlorinated biphenyl methods. The Delta is a nearly flat southward sloping surface characterized by oxbow lakes, abandoned stram channels, natural levees, backswamp areas, and bayous.</p><p>The accompanying maps were prepared to show the effects of ground-water withdrawal on the alluvial aquifer during the growing season of 1981 and to compare water levels in September 1980. The maps are based on water-level measurements made in over 400 wells that tap the alluvial aquifers, the principal source of water supply for crop irrigation and fish farming in the Delta.</p><p>Water levels in April 1981 were lower than normal as a result of less-than-normal rainfall, low stream stages, and residual drawdown caused by pumping for irrigation during 1980. Water levels in September 1981 were lower than in September 1980 because levels were lower than normal at the beginning of the irrigation season, drought conditions continued, and pumping increased. One set of measurements was made in 1975, a relatively wet year, and the other set of measurements was made in 1981, a relatively dry year. The map shows that, except for a small area near the Annapolis well field where Magothy production wells were temporarily shut down, the potentiometric surface of 1981, compared with the potentiometric surface 1975, was: lower throughout the entire area; lower by at least 10 feet in the southwestern third of the area; lower by 30 to 40 feet in parts of northern Charles County , where pumping rates increased from an average of one million gallons per day (Mgal/d) in 1975 to 2.5 Mgal/d in 1981. The primary source of public supply is from the pumped zone, locally known as the Coastal Ridge aquifer. Water levels in wells in the pumped zone respond rapidly to pumpage and usually indicate a cone of depression in most of the highly urbanized Naples area. The cone of depression caused by pumpage has created significant water-level differences between the water-table zone and pumped zone. Water-level differences in the two zones from 1975 to 1979 frequently exceed 10 feet. Currently, USGS-sponsored WWSSN stations are located at Scott Base, Sanae Base, and at South Pole Station. Scott and Sanae Stations are located near the coast; data obtained from coastal installations are normally degraded by noise generated by ocean wave action on the coast. Operations at South Pole are rather difficult because of the severe environmental characteristics and the extended logistics which are required to provide supplies and operating personnel to its remote location. The principal aquifer, the Ogallala Formation of Tertiary age, is hydraulically connected with other unconsolidated . deposits, principally of Quaternary age . Alluvium and terrace deposits in hydrologic continuity with the Qgallala are included in the High Plains aquifer in Oklahoma. Parts of the underlying bedrock also are hydraulically connected with the Ogallala. The High Plains aquifer in Oklahoma has been eroded on the west, exposing underlying rocks of Cretaceous age, and on the east, exposing rocks of Permian age.</p><p>During 1978, the U.S. Geological Survey began a 5-year study of the High Plains regional aquifer system to provide hydrologic information for evaluation of the effects of long-term development of the aquifer and to develop computer models for prediction of aquifer response to alternative changes in ground-water management (Weeks, 1978). This report is one of a series presenting hydrologic information of the High Plains aquifer in Oklahoma. </p><p>The altitude and configuration of the water table are shown for the eastern area, consisting of Harper, Ellis, Woodward, Dewey, and Roger Mills Counties (sheet 1), and for the Panhandle area, consisting of Cimarron, Texas, and Beaver Counties (sheet 2).
