Geohydrologic data are compiled on six maps at 1:24,000 scale. Together, the maps provide a comprehensive overview of a major valley-fill aquifer in southeastern Chautauqua County. The maps include surficial geology, geologic sections, water-infiltration potential of soil zone, aquifer thickness, potentiometric-surface elevations and land use. The valley-fill deposits consist of alluvial silt and sand, glacial-outwash (sand and gravel), ice-contact sand and gravel, till, and lacustrine silt and clay. The sand and gravel beds have relatively high permeabilities whereas the till, silt and clay deposits have relatively low permeabilities. Water-table conditions prevail in u nconfined sand and gravel beds along the valley margin. Artesian conditions prevail in confined sand and gravel buried under silt and clay in the middle of the valley. Recharge occurs mainly along the margin of the valley, where the land surface is highly permeable and runoff from the hillsides is concentrated. The use of land overlying the aquifer is predominantly agricultural and residential with lesser amounts of commercial and industrial uses. St. Martin 's Hot Spring which discharges a slightly saline NaCl water, is the notable exception. Mineral springs generally discharge a moderately saline C02-charged NaHC03-Cl water. The dilute Na-HC03 waters are generally associated with granite. The warm to hot waters charged with C02 issue on or near the large stratovolcanoes and many of the mineral springs also occur near the large volcanoes. The dilute waters have oxygen isotopic compositions which indicate relatively little water-rock exchange. The C02-charged waters are usually more enriched in oxygen-18 due to more extensive water-rock reaction. Carbon-13 in the C02-charged thermal waters is more depleted (-10 to -12 permil) than in the cold C02-charged soda springs (-2 to -8 permil) which are also scattered throughout the Cascades. The hot and cold C02-charged waters are supersaturated with respect to CaC03, but only the hot springs are actively depositing CaC03. Baker, Gamma, Sulphur , and Ohanapecosh seem to be associated with thermal aquifers of more than 100C. This theory is used extensively in modeling pressure-transient behavior in vapor-dominated geothermal systems. Transient, superheated steam-flow experiments were run by bringing a cylinder of porous material to a uniform initial pressure, and then making a step increase in pressure at one end of the sample, while monitoring the pressure-transient breakthrough at the other end. It was found in experiments run at 100?, 125?, and 146?C that the time required for steam-pressure transients to propagate through an unconsolidated material containing sand, silt, and clay was 10 to 25 times longer than predicted by theory. It is hypothesized that the delay in the steam-pressure transient was caused by adsorption of steam in the porous sample. \r\n\r\nIn order to account for steam adsorption, a sink term was included in the conservation of mass equation. In addition, energy transfer in the system has to be considered because latent heat is released when steam adsorption occurs, increasing the sample temperature by as much as 10?C. Finally, it was recognized that the steam pressure was a function of both the temperature and the amount of adsorption in the sample. For simplicity, this function was assumed to be in equilibrium adsorption isotherm, which was determined by experiment. By solving the modified mass and energy equations numerically, subject to the empirical adsorption isotherm relationship, excellent theoretical simulation of the experiments was achieved. \r\n\r\nThe experiments support the hypothesis that adsorption of steam can strongly influence steam pressure-transient behavior in porous media; the results suggest that the modified steam-flow theory, which includes steam adsorption terms, should be used in modeling steam flow in vapor-dominated geothermal systems.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr8295","usgsCitation":"Herkelrath, W., and Moench, A., 1982, Laboratory investigations of the physics of steam flow in a porous medium: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-95, 42 p.: ill. ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8295.","productDescription":"42 p.: ill. ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":162480,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0095/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":85554,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0095/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b28e4b07f02db6b127f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Herkelrath, W.N.","contributorId":77981,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Herkelrath","given":"W.N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238155,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Moench, A.F.","contributorId":91495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moench","given":"A.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238156,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Most linear features are related to local topographic features, such as cliffs, slope breaks, narrow ridges, and stream valley segments that are interpreted as reflecting directed aspects of local geologic structure including faults, zones of fracturing (joints), and the strike of tilted beds. \r\n\r\n6,050 linear features were mapped on computer-enhanced Landsat MSS images of 11 Landsat scenes covering an area from the Rio Grande rift zone on the east to the Grand Canyon on the west and from the San Juan Mountains, Colorado, on the north to the Mogollon Rim on the south. Computer-aided statistical analysis of the linear feature data revealed 5 statistically important trend intervals: 1.) N. 10W.-N.16E., 2.) N.35-72E., 3.) N.33-59W., 4.) N. 74-83W., and 5.) N.89-9-W. and N. 89-90E. Subsequent analysis of the distribution of the linear features indicated that only the first three trend intervals are of regional geologic significance. Computer-generated maps of the linear features in each important trend interval were prepared, as well as contour maps showing the relative concentrations of linear features in each trend interval. These maps were then analyzed for patterns suggestive of possible regional tectonic lines. \r\n\r\n20 possible tectonic lines, or lineaments, were interpreted from the maps. One lineament is defined by an obvious change in overall linear feature concentrations along a northwest-trending line cutting across northeastern Arizona. Linear features are abundant northeast of the line and relatively scarce to the southwest. The remaining 19 lineaments represent the axes of clusters of parallel linear features elongated in the direction of the linear feature trends. Most of these lineaments mark previously known structural zones controlled by linear features in the Precambrian basement or show newly recognized relationships to geological and/or geophysical patterns that suggest probable influence by buried basement features. The remaining few lineaments are not strongly correlative with geological or geophysical patterns, but on the basis of existing data they cannot be dismissed as being possible expressions of basement features.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82849","usgsCitation":"Knepper, D.H., 1982, Lineaments derived from analysis of linear features mapped from Landsat images of the Four Corners region of the Southwestern United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-849, 81 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;30 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82849.","productDescription":"81 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;30 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141873,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0849/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37635,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0849/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37636,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0849/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a50c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knepper, Daniel H. dknepper@usgs.gov","contributorId":1242,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knepper","given":"Daniel","email":"dknepper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":160411,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In a recent paper, Dziewonski et al (1981) reported transients associated with earthquake signals record at some SRO stations, and the authors ascribed these transients to an unpredictable nonlinear system response. While some transients in the SRO and ASRO data are indeed generated by a nonlinear response (clipping), others are the result of linear processes. All event-associated transients are predictable in the sense that they are produced by large impulsive body-wave signals.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82702","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J., 1982, A note on transients in the SRO and ASRO long-period data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-702, 20 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82702.","productDescription":"20 p.","costCenters":[{"id":122,"text":"Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":169707,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0702/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":9712,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0702/ofr82-702.pdf","text":"Report","size":"584 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1982-0702"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd495ee4b0b290850ef1bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, Jon","contributorId":67522,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"Jon","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238275,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report discussed benthic-invertebrate and periphytic-algal communities in streams draining homogeneous agricultural, forested, active/reclaimed-mine, and unreclaimed mine watersheds, and relates the biological communities to the physical and chemical characteristics of the streams. Alkalinity and pH were lower and the concentrations of dissolved solids, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum, and zinc were higher in unreclaimed-mine watersheds than in the other land-use watersheds. Numbers and community diversity of benthic invertebrates were less at sites affected by mining than at agricultural or forested sites, owing to (1) synergistic effects of pH, metals, and unsuitable habitat and (2) lack of colonizing drift organisms because of the small drainage area upstream from the mined area. Only a few organisms , such as the caddisflies Cheumatopsyche and Hydrosyche and the chironomids Chironomus and Cricotopus were found in streams draining mine areas. The unconsolidated deposits aquifer of Quaternary age, including alluvium and glacial lake deposits, also is an important source of water in the area. Water levels in the Madison-Swift aquifer and all overlying aquifers, including the Quaternary deposits aquifer, reflect unconfined (water-table) conditions in the Great Falls vicinity. This interconnected hydrologic system is the result of breaching of the major anticlinal structure, by ancestral and present day erosion of drainage channels by the Missouri River and its tributaries. Significant vertical inter-aquifer mixing of water, as well as surface water/groundwater interchange, probably occurs in the central part of the study area. Characterization of the chemical composition of water in individual aquifers based on samples from wells in this area probably is unreliable because of this mixing. Quality of water from two wells in the Madison-Swift aquifer near Giant Springs is similar to water from the springs. Water from these three samples is less mineralized than most groundwater in the study area; dissolved solids concentrations for the three samples range from 516 to 550 mg/L. The quality of water varies among aquifers and throughout the study area. The ranges of dissolved solids concentrations determined by chemical analysis are Madison-Swift aquifer, about 520 to 1,570 mg/L; Morrison Formation, 908 to 1 ,480 mg/L; Kootenai Formation, 558 to 1,550 mg/L; Colorado Group , 2,690 and 2,740 mg/L (two samples); and unconsolidated Quaternary deposits, 383 to 2,060 mg/L. The chemical quality of water from the Colorado Group in the western one-third of the area generally is more mineralized than water from aquifers in the rest of the area. Specific conductance of water from eight wells completed in the Colorado Group averages 4,440 micromhos at 25 C. This new taxonomic guide overcomes some deficiencies in existing keys to this tribe and the reviewed and updated taxonomy enables identification of the larvae that may be useful as ecological indicators. Over 2,000 specimens from 26 states were examined, identified and measured in this study. The following genera were included: Stempellinell, Zavrelia, Stempellina, Constempellina, Corynocera, Cladotanytarsus,.. Paratanytarsus, Rheotanytarsus,. Micropsectra, Lauterbornia, Nimbocera, Tanytarsus and Neozavrelia. Photographs illustrate mature larvae of these genera with the exception of Zavrelia and Neozavrelia which are not known to exist in North America. The morphological data, Which are summarized in a table of distinctive characteristics and the dichotomous key, enable identification to genus. Notes on range, habitat and food preference are included, and species identifications are presented where applicable.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr82768","usgsCitation":"Steiner, J., Doughman, J., and Moore, C., 1982, A generic guide to the larvae of the Nearctic Tanytarsini, (Chironomidae:diptera): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-768, vi, 47 p. : ill. ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82768.","productDescription":"vi, 47 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":169544,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0768/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":85617,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0768/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aeab3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steiner, J.W.","contributorId":55279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steiner","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Doughman, J.S.","contributorId":82740,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doughman","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moore, C.R.","contributorId":46962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"C.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Rapid growth and extensive development in recent years have imposed progressively greater stress on the water resources of the islands.</p><p>Sanibel and Captiva Islands are underlain by a series of geologic formations containing some zones of relatively freshwater and other zones of more mineralized, or even very saline water. Two aquifers are the principal sources of water supply on the islands. The upper aquifer is in the upper part of the Hawthorn Formation. The lower aquifer is in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation and the underlying upper part of the Tampa Limestone. Both aquifers are under sufficient artesian pressure to permit wells to flow at land surface. The potentiometric surface of the lower Hawthorn-upper Tampa aquifer has been lowered in the central part of Sanibel Island where the Island Water Association operates about 10 wells that tap the lower aquifer.</p><p>In 1977, the average pumpage from these 10 wells was 1.4 million gallons per day. The water is processed through a desalination plant before distribution. In 1977, the total volume of water withdrawn from both the lower and upper aquifers for all purposes was 690 million gallons, an average of about 1.9 million gallons per day.</p><p>Water from the upper Hawthorn aquifer during the period 1975-77 contained dissolved solids concentrations ranging from 721 to 2,390 milligrams per liter. Water from the lower Hawthorn-upper Tampa aquifer during the same period contained concentrations ranging from 1,700 to 4,130 milligrams per liter. Water from both aquifers is hard and contains relatively high concentrations of sodium, sulfate, and chloride.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Recurrent seismic swarms during June 1980-May 1982 raised concern over the possibility of renewed volcanic activity in the foreseeable future, prompting a USGS Notice of Potential Volcanic Hazard on 28 May 1982. As part of an intensified Long Valley monitoring effort sponsored by the USGS Volcanic Hazards Program, a network of nine tilt sites was established near Mammoth Lakes in May and July 1982. This report describes those stations and presents results from three tilt resurveys during July-August 1982.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82893","usgsCitation":"Dzurisin, D., Cashman, K.V., Johnston, D.A., and Sylvester, A.G., 1982, Tilt measurements at Long Valley caldera, California, May-August 1982: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-893, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82893.","productDescription":"34 p.","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":414351,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13850.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":36267,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0893/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142843,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0893/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Long Valley caldera","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -118.833,\n 37.733\n ],\n [\n -118.95,\n 37.733\n ],\n [\n -118.95,\n 37.617\n ],\n [\n -118.833,\n 37.617\n ],\n [\n -118.833,\n 37.733\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b753","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dzurisin, Daniel 0000-0002-0138-5067 dzurisin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0138-5067","contributorId":538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dzurisin","given":"Daniel","email":"dzurisin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":158128,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cashman, K.
