Neither design would cause more than a 0.1-foot increase in water level of the 50-year flood nor more than a 0.2-foot increase in water level of the 100-year flood above levels that would occur during these floods under present channel conditions. The discharges used in the analyses were 55,200 cubic feet per second for the 50-year flood and 63,000 cubic feet per second for the 100-year flood. Mean flow velocities and water-surface elevations at 17 cross sections are given for both bridge designs and are compared with those that would occur under present conditions. The purpose of the study was to map the types and extent of nearshore bed forms and to define the late Pleistocene and Holocene history of the area.</p><p>The equipment used on this cruise consisted of an EG&amp;G Uniboom, Raytheon echo sounder, and Edo Western sidescan-sonar system. The Uniboom data were mostly filtered to 400-4000 Hz and were recorded at a 1/4-s sweep rate. The 60-kHz echo-sounding data were recorded on a 6-in strip chart on which the depth was calibrated in feet. The sidescan sonar had an operating frequency of 100 kHz and was set to scan 50 m or 100 m to each side of the towed fish. All three data types were collected along 153 km of trackline.</p><p>Navigation during the survey was by Loran-C and Motorola miniranger systems. Two shore stations were set up for the miniranger system and fixes were collected at either 1- or 2-min intervals. This system malfunctioned during parts of the survey, and during these times navigation was by Loran-C using a Northstar system.</p><p>The original records can be seen and studied at the U.S. Geological Survey Data Library at Woods Hole, MA 02543. County Council, using data from the U.S. Geological Survey and private consultants, concluded that the central wetlands were an optimal area for well-field development. With this in mind, Volusia County requested that the State of Florida buy land in the central wetlands of Volusia County under the Land Conservation Act of 1972, hoping to protect both the environmentally endangered lands and a potential water resource. In 1974, the State acquired 7.28mi<sup>2&nbsp;</sup>within this area, and present (1979) plans to acquire and additional 3.33mi<sup>2</sup>. The State later became concerned that wetland protection may not be compatible with development of water resources due to the vegetation changes that might occur if shallow ground-water levels are lowered by producing well field. Consequently, because of mutual interest, the U.S. Geological Survey with the State entered into a program of documenting for future reference the vegetation in the State-owned land.</p><p>The purposes of this report and associated map (fig. 1) are (1) to document existing vegetation in approximately 140 mi<sup>2&nbsp;</sup><span id=\"_mce_caret\" data-mce-bogus=\"1\" data-mce-type=\"format-caret\">in central Volusia County, and (2) to investigate natural water-level fluctuations in selected vegetative communities to the extent possible with relatively short-term data. This 40-km x 35-km area was chosen for study because it lies within the area of high interest for petroleum development (Lease sales 49 and 59), and because it includes several wells which provide stratigraphic control. This report discusses the results of geologic mapping, using seismic-reflection data acquired in 1978 and 1979. Some initial results from more recently acquired data are included.</p><p>The Continental Slope in the study area has a complex surface with ridges, canyons, and valleys. Three slump or slide features were observed in the heads and on the walls of canyons and valleys, and two slides were identified on an intercanyon area. The identified slumps or slides are found in Quaternary sediments and total about 1.3 percent of the Continental Slope area mapped.</p><p>The slope is generally mantled by less than 2 m of Holocene sediments. Pleistocene sediment (primarily silty clay) is about 450 m thick at the top of the slope and thins to nearly zero or is absent on much of the mid and lower slope, where sediments of Miocene to Eocene age are exposed. Ridges on the midslope (water depths of 800-1,500 m) and parts of the lowr slope (1,500-2,150 m) result primarily from Pleistocene and older deposition. The intervening valleys show evidence of erosion along the deepest parts of their courses. Mid-range sidescan-sonar data show evidence that processes of bottom-current erosion and downcanyon transport of material may be active in the present day. These observations were made on the Potomac River estuary (POTE) during four cruises between August 1977 and August 1978. Four experimental methods were used: carbon uptake using carbon-14, carbon uptake and respiration by a pH method, productivity and respiration by the dissolved oxygen method, and nutrient (NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, PO4=, and SiO2=) uptake and regeneration by colorimetry. The experiments were made at sites representative of conditions in four principal reaches of the tidal Potomac River estuary: near the mouth, seaward of the summer nutrient and phytoplankton maximum, near the region of maximum phytoplankton standing stock , and near the maximum anthropogenic nutrient source. The bathymetry shows the lake to be relatively steep-sided and flat-bottomed, with a maximum depth of between 40 and 45 feet. Aquatic plants were confined to the edges of the lake in depths of less than 15 feet. Nine species of aquatic plants occcur in significant numbers in the lake. Lake bathymetric data were collected using a recording fathometer and sounding rod; aquatic plant data were collected by visual survey; and the collection of samples using a weed rake. The river is about 29.3 miles long, and drains an area of about 354 square miles at its mouth.</p><p>Traveltimes were determined by tracing the movement of rhodamine WI, a soluble fluorescent dye. The dye was injected into the river at the upstream end of each reach studied and water samples were collected at the downstream end of the study reach and analyzed for dye concentrations.</p><p>Time-of-travel data were related to stream discharge to estimate traveltime for a water-soluble contaminant traveling between any two points at any discharge in the low-to-high flow range.</p><p>The discharges of the Little Androscoggin River at the time of the study ranged from 40 to 950 cubic feet per second at the Auburn gaging station.
