The report covers studies whose fieldwork was conducted during the period from 1 October 1977 to 30 September 1978. The results of the first year of study are reported in Popenoe (1978a and b) and as U.S. Department of Commerce NTIS report PB 300-820.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The purpose of these investigations is to provide basic geologic and oceanographic data to the BLM Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Marine Environmental Studies Program in support of management decisions which relate to possible development of oil and gas resources of the continental shelf. The objectives of the USGS-BLM geologic research program for fiscal year 1978 (FY-78) were 1) to determine the sedimentation rates and processes on the upper slope and inner Blake Plateau; 2) to determine the distribution, areal extent, and vertical characteristics of geological features supportive of biological communities; 3) to monitor the transport of bottom sediment across the OCS, evaluate its possible effect on pollutant transfer along the seabed and the potential of sediment as a pollutant sink, determine the implications of erosion/deposition on pipeline emplacement, and aid the interpretation of chemical, biological, and physical data; 4) to determine the concentration levels of chosen trace metals and silica in three chemically defined fractions of the suspended particulate matter (seston); 5) to study the shelf edge and slope near areas of oil and gas interest, and the northern portion of the Blake Plateau for evidence of slope instability and other geologic hazards, and 6) to determine the depth and rate of sediment mixing caused by large storms and/or by benthic organisms and where possible to estimate the rate of active sediment accumulation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81582A","usgsCitation":"1981, Environmental geologic studies on the southeastern United States Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf, 1977-1978: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-582, Report: 437 p.; A 177-m-long core (CL-80-1) was taken, which also augments and extends a previous study of eight shorter cores collected from Clear Lake in 1973. Core CL-80-1 was continuously cored in 7.5 m of water, and 66.5 percent recovery was achieved. The sediments are composed primarily of clayey and silty sapropelic mud similar to those presently being deposited in the lake, and are interbedded with local coarse sand and gravel deposits and thin volcanic ash beds. Coring was terminated when coarse rounded gravel and cobbles of Franciscan assemblage lithology were encountered. The location of core CL-80-1 is between two other core sites of the 1973 series of cores, one of which (CL-73-4) is 115 m long and contains a well-defined, uninterrupted pollen and physical stratigraphic record from the present to about 130,000 years ago. Specific conductance, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, and densities of bacteria in the river increased in a downstream direction. At site 1 (upstream) the mean concentration of total nitrogen was 0.28 milligram per liter with a mean total phosphorus concentration of 0.05 milligram per liter. At site 3 (downstream) mean-total nitrogen and phosphorus were 0.48 and 0.14 milligram per liter respectively. Specific conductance ranged from 90 to 125 micromhos per centimeter at site 1 and from 155 to 175 at site 3. The fecal coliform to fecal streptoccai bacteria ratio of most samples at site 1 was less than 2.0. At site 3 the ratio exceeded 4.0 in most samples indicating wastes of human origin were probably present.
