The material is presented in a format which may serve as a guide for subsequent permit applications. Data on the quality and quantity of surface water and ground water for the mine plan, adjacent, and general areas are presented. The data are presented in three general categories: measured and estimated current conditions, estimated annual variations, and predicted effects of mining and reclamation. Current surface-water, ground-water, and biological conditions are the easiest to define. Seasonal variations in surface-water flow can be estimated with some confidence, but seasonal variations in surface-water quality, biological quality, and ground-water levels and quality are difficult to estimate with the insufficient field data available. The effects of mining and reclamation cannot be predicted through the use of the scant data collected and current predictive tools.

Data that would fill voids left by previous studies are depth to bedrock and depth to good-quality water beneath the two playas in the valley. Depths to bedrock calculated from a gravity survey in Lemmon Valley indicate that the western part of Lemmon Valley is considerably deeper than the eastern part. Maximum depth in the western part is about 2 ,600 feet below land surface. This depression approximately underlies the Silver Lake playa. A smaller, shallower depression with a maximum depth of about 1,500 feet below land surface exists about 2.5 miles north of the playa. The eastern area is considerably shallower. The maximum calculated depth to bedrock is about 1,000 feet below land surface, but the depth throughout most the eastern area is only about 400 feet below land surface. An electrical resistivity survey in Lemmon Valley consisting of 10 Schlumberger soundings was conducted around the playas. The maximum depth of poor-quality water (characterized by a resistivity less than 20 ohm-meters) differed considerably from place to place. Maximum depths of poor-quality water beneath the playa east of Stead varied from about 120 feet to almost 570 feet below land surface. At the Silver Lake playa, the maximum depths varied from about 40 feet in the west to 490 feet in the east. All samples were suitable for drinking water with respect to the constituents tested. Tests for fecal coliform bacteria were negative. The concentrations of dissolved solids, composed mainly of calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and sulfate, were less than 300 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of sodium, potassium, and chloride were 3.5 milligrams per liter or less.
From March to June, the maximum concentration of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen decreased from 0.57 to 0.29 milligram per liter and the mean concentrations decreased from 0.16 to 0.11 milligram per liter, probably as a result of dilution of ground water by snowmelt. The concentrations in samples from the same wells generally were less during 1979 than during 1974-75. Isolation of sewage effluent in shallow zones by hardpan, consumption of nutrients by abundant phreatophytes, filtration of bacteria by the soil or aquifer, and dilution by underflow and recharge evidently combine to maintain the quality of the well waters within acceptable limits.

The flow regime is characterized by high summer flow of glacial meltwater and periodic flooding caused by sudden releases of glacier-dammed lakes in the headwaters. Throughout most of its 50-mile course across the Kenai Peninsula Lowlands to Cook Inlet, the river meanders within coarse bed material with a median diameter typically in the range of 40-60 millimeters. Every nontidal section of the stream is a known or potential salmon-spawning site.
The stream is underfit, a condition attributed to regional glacial recession and hypothesized drainage changes, and locally is entrenched in response to geologically recent changes in base level. The coarseness of the bed material is explained by these characteristics, combined with the reservoir-like effects of two large moraine impounded lakes, Kenai and Skilak Lakes, that formed as lowland glaciers receded. Throughout the central section of the river the channel is effectively armored, a condition that may have important long-term implications for the ability of this section of channel to support the spawning and rearing of salmon.
The 3.8 river miles of channel below Skilak Lake contain submersed, crescentic gravel dunes with lengths in excess of 500 ft and heights of more than 15 ft. Such bed forms are highly unusual in streams with coarse bed material. The dunes were entirely stable from 1950 to at least 1977, so much so that small details of shape were unmodified by a major glacial-outburst flood in 1974. The features are the product of a flood greatly in excess of any recorded discharge.
The entrenched section of the channel has been stable since at least 1950-195, only negligible amounts of bank erosion are indicated by sequential aerial photos. Bank erosion is active both upstream and downstream from the entrenched channel, however, and erosion rates in those reaches are locally comparable to rates in streams of similar size. Although erosion rates have been generally constant since 1950-1951, evidence suggests a possible recent decrease in bank stability and an increase in erosion that could be related to changes in river use.
The high sustained flow of summer encourages a variety of recreation-related modifications to the bank and flood plain--canals, groins, boat ramps, slips, embankments, as well as commercial developments. As population and recreation use increase, development can pose a hazard to the productivity of the stream through increased suspended-sediment concentration resulting directly from construction and, with greater potential for long-term impact, indirectly from bank erosion. A short-term hazard, to both stream and developments is the cutoff of meander loops, the risk of which is increased by canals and boat slips cut in the surface layer of cohesive, erosion-resistant sediment on the flood plain within nonentrenched meander loops. A significant long-term hazard is an increase in bank erosion rates resulting from the loss of stabilizing vegetation on the high (up to 70 ft) cutbanks of entrenched and partially entrenched sections of channel. Potential root causes of erosion vegetation loss are river-use practices, meander cutoffs, and groin construction.

Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 62 to 3,705 milligrams per liter and the maximum load was 45,547 metric tons per day. The percentage of suspended sediment samller than sand (less than 0.062 millimeter) was as follows: 23 to 78 percent for the South Platte River, 9 to 30 percent for the North Platte River, and 2 to 89 percent for the Platte River. Bedload-transport rates ranged from 0.0085 to 0.67 kilogram per second per meter of channel width for the entire study area. The median grain size of bedload ranged from 0.6 to 2.6 millimeters for the South Platte River, 0.5 to 0.8 millimeter for the North Platte River, and 0.6 to 1.2 millimeters for th Platte River. Virtually no surveys have been done on the Phanerozoic platform around the edges of the shield, and although regional gravity coverage is available for the Eastern Province from the Arabian American Oil Company, it is confidential. Approximately 4,500 more gravity stations at 10 km spacing are needed to complete the coverage of the shield, and 5,250 are needed on the Phanerozoic platform to the north and east of the shield.
The initial gravity maps compiled from the regional gravity project will be along the \"geophysical strip\", a band approximately 150 km wide across the shield from Al Qawayiyah to the Farasan Islands. As more data become available, additional maps will be compiled at 1:500,000 scale covering the same areas as the USGS Miscellaneous Investigations Maps 1-700-A to I-220-A.
Computer software development and implementation for gravity data reduction, storage, retrieval, and display are 80 percent complete. Development and implementation of software for routine semi-quantitative and quantitative interpretation are 50 percent complete.
If the Directorate General of Mineral Resources were to commit full support for the regional gravity project, phase 1 (data acquisition) and phase 2 (data reduction and publication of maps and principal facts) could be completed and phase 3 (interpretation) could be about 50 percent completed by the end of the Third Five Year Development Plan (1985).

The model preserves the first and second order moment properties of the historical flow series, including significant autocorrelations within each station and cross-correlations between the stations. Higher order moments are preserved by a transformation technique that allows the residuals from the model to be approximately normal. An algorithm is given for simulation of combined-stations flows, and some simulations are carried out to determine the likelihood of specified flow shortages that could be detrimental to the wildlife habitat in the reach of the Platte River between Overton and Grand Island.
