This report is one of a series presenting hydrologic information of the High Plains aquifer in Oklahoma.\r\nThis report consists of two maps showing the altitude and configuration of the eroded pre-Ogallala bedrock surface (sheets 1 and 2) that forms the base of the aquifer. Bedrock slopes generally from west to east and is composed of rocks of Permian, Triassic-Jurassic, and Cretaceous age. The subcrop extent of these rocks is shown by Morton (1973) for Oklahoma and by Weeks and Gutentag (1981) for the entire High Plains study area. Altitudes of the aquifer base were determined from drillers' logs provided by the Oklahoma Water Resources Board and from published and unpublished information in the files of the U.S. Geological Survey. The detailed study of these earthquakes provides a tool for gaining insight into the tectonic and physical processes responsible for the generation of damaging earthquakes. This catalog contains the fundamental parameters for earthquakes located within and adjacent to the seismograph network operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), during the third quarter of 1977.</p><p>The motivation for these detailed studies has been described by Pakiser and others (1969) and by Eaton and others (1970). Similar catalogs of earthquakes for the years 1969, 1970, and 1971 have been prepared by Lee and others (1972b, c and d). Catalogs for the first, second, third, and fourth quarters of 1972 and the first, second, third and fourth quarters of 1973 have been prepared by Wesson and others (1972a, b, 1973b, and 1974a and b), by Bufe and others (1975), and by Lester and others (1976a and b). Catalogs for the years 1974, 1975 and 1976 and the first quarter of 1977 have been prepared by Lester and Meagher (1978), by McHugh and Lester (1978 and 1979) and by Marks and Lester (1980a and 1980b). The basic data contained in these catalogs provide a foundation for further studies.</p><p>This catalog contains data on 855 earthquakes in central California. Arrival times at 205 seismograph stations were used to locate the earthquakes listed in this catalog. Of these 193 were telemetered stations operated by USGS. Readings from the remaining 12 stations were obtained through the courtesy of the Seismographic Stations, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, University of California, Berkeley (UCB), and the California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento.</p><p>The Seismographic Station of the University of California, Berkeley, has for many years published a bulletin describing earthquakes in northern California and the surrounding area and listing readings at UCB stations from more distant events. A comprehensive investigation of the area 's ground-water resources will be made as part of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) program. Basaltic and sedimentary rocks in the Snake River Plain yield large quantities of water that are vital to the area 's agricultural economy. Basaltic rocks predominate in the eastern Snake River Plain and have especially high water-yielding capabilities. Surface water, largely from the Snake River, is extensively used for irrigation and is a major source of recharge to the ground-water system. Springs issuing from basaltic rocks that form the Snake River Canyon wall near Twin Falls are the major points of ground-water discharge. Increased use of ground water for irrigation is causing concern as to the effect of large-scale withdrawals on spring flow. Ground-water flow models will be used to improve understanding of the hydrologic system, and, if feasible, to aid in evaluating management alternatives. Ground-water quality will be defined and geochemical techniques used to determine the effects of water-rock reactions on water quality. Several reports are planned on different phases of the project, concluding with a summary report. Three lease sales have been held in the subregion. Lease Sale 39, for the northern Gulf of Alaska, was held on April 13, 1976, and resulted in the leasing of 76 tracts. Lease Sale CI, for Lower Cook Inlet, was held on October 27, 1977, and resulted in the leasing of 87 tracts. Lease Sale 55, held on October 21, 1980, resulted in the leasing of 35 tracts in the eastern Gulf of Alaska. Exploratory drilling on the tracts leased in Sale 39 began in September 1976, and exploratory drilling on tracts leased in Sale CI began in July 1978. Drilling stopped on Lease Sale 39 tracts in July 1978 and on CI tracts in June 1980. No additional applications for permit to drill have been submitted for either area. Exploratory drilling is expected to begin on tracts leased in Sale 55 in the spring or summer of 1982.</p><p>Commercial amounts of hydrocarbons have not been found in any of the wells drilled in either the Sale 39 or Sale CI areas. As of February 1981, 75 of the 76 leases issued in the northern Gulf of Alaska have been relinquished, and 18 of the 87 CI leases have been relinquished. The next lease sale in the Gulf of Alaska, Sale RS-1 (a reoffering sale), is scheduled for late June 1981. Lease Sale 60 (Lower Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait) is scheduled for September 1981.</p><p>The most recent estimate by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) of risked, economically recoverable resources for the one tract currently under lease in the northern Gulf of Alaska is that they are negligible. For the 35 tracts currently under lease (plus two tracts offered but not leased) in the northeastern Gulf of Alaska, the USGS has estimated risked, economically recoverable resource estimates of 12.6 million barrels of oil and 45.4 billion cubic feet of gas.</p><p>Onshore impacts from OCS exploration in the Gulf of Alaska have been minimal. Two communities--Yakutat and Seward--served as support bases for past northern Gulf of Alaska exploration efforts. Kenai and Homer provided support for the exploratory drilling in Lower Cook Inlet. EDC reproduces and sells photographic and electronic copies of satellite images of areas throughout the world. Other products include aerial photographs collected by 16 organizations, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Primary users of the remotely sensed data are Federal, State, and municipal government agencies, universities, foreign nations, and private industries. The&nbsp;professional services available at EDC are primarily directed at integrating satellite and aircraft remote sensing technology into the programs of the Department of the Interior and its cooperators. This is accomplished through formal training workshops, user assistance, cooperative demonstration projects, and access to equipment and capabilities in an advanced data analysis laboratory. In addition, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, universities, and the general public can get assistance from the EDC Staff. </p><p>Since 1973, EDC has contributed to the accelerating growth in development and operational use of remotely sensed data for land resource problems through its role as educator and by conducting basic and applied&nbsp;remote sensing applications research. As remote sensing technology continues to evolve, EDC will continue to respond to the increasing demand for timely information on remote sensing applications. Questions most often asked about EDC's research and training programs include: Who may attend an EDC remote sensing training course? Specifically, what is taught? Who may cooperate with EDC on remote sensing projects? Are interpretation services provided on a service basis? The Secretary of the Department of the Interior has been designated by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953 (43 U.S.C. 1331-1343), as amended by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Acts of 1978, to manage and regulate many of the activities that relate to the leasing, exploration, development, and production of the OCS mineral resources. Many of the Secretary's responsibilities have been delegated to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).</p><p>Under OCS Lands Act an Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Information Program was created and is managed by the BLM and the USGS. Authorities and operating procedures are detailed in the Code of Federal Regulations at 30 CFR 252 and 43 CFR 3300.</p><p>Under this program regional indexes are prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, and they list all relevant, actual, or proposed programs, plans, reports, environmental impact statements, and other lease sale information. The U.S. Geological Survey, in a cooperative investigative program with the Suwannee River Authority, has sampled a network of nine water-quality monitoring stations since 1968 to detect short- and long-term changes in surface-water quality in the Suwannee River. Two additional stations, Camp Branch near Genoa and Rocky Creek near Houston, were established in October 1978. In addition to this 11-station network, Deep Creek and Robinson Creek near Suwannee Valley, which originate in the Osceola National Forest and have been supported since April 1976 through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, have been included in this report.</p><p>The analyses of samples collected routinely included: nutrients, total organic carbon, and 5-day biological oxygen demand, bimonthly; trace metals, annually. The array of constituents sampled was expanded in October 1978 at three of the original nine stations to provide quality-of-water information for streams draining an industrial area: Rocky Creek near Belmont, Hunter Creek near Belmont, and Swift Creek at Facil. Data collected at these three sites now include: major chemical constituents, six times per year; radium-226, two times per year; and trace metals, one time per year. The leveling array is one of several strain measurement techniques established at the observatory by several investigators for side-byside testing. Precise leveling is an optical method of measuring vertical strain in contrast to the various tiltmeters which measure electronically or electro-optically. The advantages of establishing several strain measuring techniques at one location is to obtain a high degree of redundancy so that the precision of each technique can be better evaluated.</p><p>A secondary and on-going objective of the leveling is the observation of closely-spaced benchmarks to determine factors affecting their stability. More than 2,100 samples from 84 drill holes representing 11 shale units were analyzed for clay mineralogy or whole—rock mineralogy or both. Approximately 1,300 samples were from drill cores and about 800 samples were from drill cuttings. Illite (2M) recrystallized during diagenesis is more or less uniformly present throughout all shale units. Chlorite formed during low grade metamorphism is least abundant in the younger units and more abundant in the older units. Illite—smectite mixed—layer clay, which supplied the material for the formation of chlorite, is most abundant in the younger units and least abundant in the older units. Illite—chlorite mixed—layer clay occurs as a trace in all shale units. Kaolinite, the only unaltered detrital clay mineral, occurs in about 25 to 30 percent of the samples. The source of the kaolinite appears to have been to the east and northeast of the basin of deposition.
