Pennsylvanian and Mississippian bedrock are overlain by drift and till from the Kansan, Illinoian, and Wisconsinan glaciers that covered two-thirds of the area. Most of the coal is mined from Pennsylvanian coal units. As of 1978, more than 1-billion short tons of coal had been mined from the 11 counties. More than 12-billion short tons remained in reserve. During 1978, 17.8-million short tons were mined. Coal mining disturbs less than 1% of the land in the study area. Sixty-two percent of the land use is agricultural, and 29% is forested. More coal is mined in the southern and western parts of the study area than elsewhere. Surface water in these parts had lower pH and alkalinity than water in the north and east parts. Specific conductance and concentrations of sulfate, iron, and manganese in surface water were higher in the south and west than elsewhere. The withdrawals in 1978 and 1979 are the smallest since the mid-1950 's except in 1966. Nearly all the decrease was in the amount of ground water used for irrigation in the Basin and Range lowlands province. The large amount of water in storage in the surface-water reservoirs, release of water from the reservoirs, floods, and conservation practices contributed to the decrease in ground-water use and caused water-level rises in the Salt River Valley, Gila Bend basin, and Gila River drainage from Painted Rock Dam to Texas Hill. Two small-scale maps show ground-water pumpage by areas and the status of the ground-water inventory in the State. The main map, which is at a scale of 1:500,000, shows potential well production, depth to water in selected wells in spring 1980, and change in water level in selected wells from 1975 to 1980. A brief text summarizes the current ground-water conditions in the State. Streamflow studies are made to determine availability of supplies and relations to rainfall runoff, urbanization, flood frequencies, and sediment-transport. Ground-water studies are made to determine the quantity of supplies available in aquifer systems, the effects of natural or artificial contamination, and the effects of withdrawals by irrigation, industrial, and municipal supplies. Water-quality studies are made to define physical, chemical, and biological characteristics in streams and principal aquifers, and to evaluate the chemical changes due to urbanization and surface Most of the work is carried out in cooperation with 51 Federal, State, and local agencies. Data are being collected at 503 surface-water gaging stations, 161 surface-water quality stations, and 1,151 observation wells. Sixty-seven hydrologic investigations are underway and are described in the report by a map showing the location of the study area and a statement of the purpose, objective, approach, progress, and plans. Twelve of the investigations are statewide, 6 are regional, 9 are in the Missouri River basin, 8 in the Arkansas River basin, 6 in the Rio Grande basin, and 5 are multistate. Listed in the report are references to 9 data reports and 27 interpretive reports released or published in fiscal year 1980 as a result of water-resources investigations in Colorado. S. Geological Survey and the Ministry of Development, Sultanate of Oman, during late 1973 and early 1974. The purpose of the investigation was to provide an evaluation of the mineral potential of northern Oman and produce recommendations leading toward the utilization of any viable mineral deposits that were found. The widespread copper deposits located within the Semail volcanics appear to be mineable, the iron-nickel laterites developed upon the weathered surface of the Semail ophiolite have economic potential. Manganese and chromite deposits investigated have only a marginal value and are not likely to be of economic importance in the near future. Discovery of economic copper and iron deposits warrants further geologic mapping and mineral exploration in northern Oman. In addition to this, recommendations regarding the organization of a geological and mining group within the Directorate of Petroleum and Minerals are presented.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81452","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the Directorate General of Petroleum and Minerals, Ministry of Development, Sultanate of Oman","usgsCitation":"Coleman, R.G., and Bailey, E.H., 1981, Mineral deposits and geology of northern Oman as of 1974: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-452, Report: viii, 127 p.; 1 Plate: 20.29 x 13.99 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81452.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 127 p.; 1 Plate: 20.29 x 13.99 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":35957,"rank":400,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0452/figure-4.pdf","text":"Figure 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141294,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0452/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35958,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0452/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Oman","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              55.8709716796875,\n              21.80030805097259\n            ],\n            [\n              59.9359130859375,\n              21.80030805097259\n            ],\n            [\n              59.9359130859375,\n              24.90138485280086\n            ],\n            [\n              55.8709716796875,\n              24.90138485280086\n            ],\n            [\n              55.8709716796875,\n              21.80030805097259\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635924","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coleman, Robert Griffin","contributorId":89527,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coleman","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Griffin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bailey, Edgar Herbert","contributorId":85179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Edgar","email":"","middleInitial":"Herbert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157620,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Streamflow varies seasonally. No flow was observed from the upper part of the basin in late winter (April). In the lower part of the basin springs support perennial flow in the Kugururok River and downstream along the Noatak. The discharge of the Noatak was 150 cubic feet per second in April 1978. During the summer, rainstorms are common, and runoff produces high flow. During August 1978, flow was normal in the basin; unit runoff averaged about 1 cubic foot per second per square mile. The Noatak is a gravel-bed stream of moderate slope. It drops about 1,800 feet in elevation from a point near the head waters to the mouth, a distance of 400 miles. Streambed material in most places is gravel, cobbles, and boulders, maximum riffle depths and pool widths increase in a downstream direction. Stream velocity in August 1978 increased from about 1 foot per second in the upper basin to about 4 feet per second in the lower reaches. High-water marks of the maximum evident flood were found at elevations from bankfull to 5 feet above bankfull. Maximum evident flood unit runoff rates were estimated to be less than 50 cubic feet per second per square mile. Scars produced by ice jams were seldom seen above bankfull. Bank erosion appears to be most active in the lowlands. Water in the Noatak River basin is virtually unaffected by man 's activity. Water quality varies with location, weather, season, and source; the water is normally clear, cool, and hard. During late winter sea water intrudes into the Lower Noatak Canyon. Benthic invertebrate community composition and variability suggest the river 's undiminished natural quality. About 62 percent of this production was exported, 28 percent as phosphate rock and 34 percent is manufactured fertilizers and chemicals. The remainder was used domestically, largely (88 percent) for fertilizer and animal feed supplement to produce agricultural products (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1981). A significant portion of these agricultural products was exported, so the phosphate rock that went into that portion was exported indirectly. Thus, most phosphate production is exported directly or indirectly and contributes to the U.S. balance of international payments. Although the marketable value of the phosphate rock produced in 1980 was only about $1.2 billion, the total value of the agricultural and chemical products depending on phosphate rock input is many times that. The continued ability of the U.S. phosphate industry to supply low-cost phosphate rock for export and domestic consumption is clearly of major importance to the Extensive coal development would place a heavy demand on the region's limited streamflow. Some Paleozoic rocks that underlie the Fort Union coal region might supply, at least on a temporary basis, a significant amount of the water required for coal development. This report provides information on ground-water resistivity, rock characteristics, and ground-water temperature, from which general inferences relating to water quality and flow direction may be drawn. The area of study covers approximately 200,000 square miles, and includes eastern Montana, western North Dakota and South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and northwestern Nebraska.

Borehole geophysical data and bottom-hole temperature data were used to determine porosity, apparent electrical resistivity of ground water (Rwa), and temperature of ground water for the Red River Formation (Ordovician), Interlake Formation (Uppermost Ordovician and Silurian), Duperow Formation (Upper Devonian), Birdbear Formation (Upper Devonian), and a chronostratigraphic interval within the Madison Limestone (Mississippian). Rwa indicates the areal distribution of fresh and salty water and the probable direction of water movement. Maps showing areal distribution of Rwa, rock porosity, and ground-water temperature were prepared for each formation.

Rwa values ranged from about 13 ohm-meters to 0.04 ohm-meter. The highest Rwa is in recharge areas, and the lowest, in the areas of dense brine in the Williston basin. The areas of brine are not centered in the deepest part of the basin, but are shifted to the east and south, apparently in response to hydraulic effects associated with the flow of less salty water around the brine and into overlying formations. The distribution of water of different quality, which controls Rwa, is governed by the flow system, which in turn is affected by proximity of geologic structures, by the distribution of rock types, and by porosity trends within the rocks.

Temperatures of ground water ranged from about 80°F to as much as 320°F. Generally, temperatures are lowest nearer the mountains and uplift areas and highest in the deeper parts of the basins. Temperature anomalies may be caused by geologic structures, thermal conductivity of overlying beds, and deeper than expected circulation of water in fractures related to intrusive igneous rocks. Thermal gradients ranged from 1.0°F/100 ft to 4.2°/100 ft.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81629","usgsCitation":"MacCary, L., 1981, Apparent water resistivity, porosity, and ground-water temperature of the Madison limestone and underlying rocks in parts of Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-629, Report: viii, 36 p.; The Arkansas River meanders atop and interacts hydraulically with the area's unconfined sand and gravel aquifer. Owing to decreasing recharge and increasing discharge during the 1970's, water levels declined an average of 4 feet during 1970-79. Average annual streamflow at Syracuse, Kansas, also decreased from 232 cubic feet per second during 1951-69 to 85 cubic feet per second during 1970-79.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. It is part of the upper Ohio River basin, which includes the Beaver, Mahoning, and Shenango Rivers. The area is underlain by rocks of the Pottsville, Allegheny, Conemaugh, Monongahela Groups (or Formations) and Dunkard Group. Area 4 has a temperate climate with an annual average rainfall of 38 to 42 inches, most of its area is covered by forest. The soils have a high erosion potential where the vegetation cover is removed. In response to Public Law 95-87, 132 sites were added to the existing surface-water data-collection network in area 4. At these added sites, collected data includes discharge, water quality, sediment, and biology. The data are available from computer storage through the National Water Data Exchange (NAWDEX) or the published annual Water Resources Data reports for Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Hydrologic problems related to mining are: (1) Erosion and increased sedimentation, and (2) degradation of water quality. Erosion and sedimentation are associated chiefly with surface mining. Sediment yields increase drastically when vegetation is removed from the highly erosive soils. Degradation of water quality can be caused by acid-mine drainage from underground and surface mining. More than half the acid-mine drainage effluent in area 4 comes from underground mines. The rest seeps from abandoned surface mines. Usually in reclaimed surface mines the overburden is replaced in such a short time after the coal is taken out that oxidation of acid-forming minerals, commonly pyrite or marcasite, is not complete or is neutralized by the buffering action of calcareous minerals in the soils.
