Macroforms have dimensions commensurate with the width and depth of the channel and are emergent at all but the highest flow stages. The encroachment of vegetation on macroforms and their consequent stabilization since the large-scale development of irrigation in the Platte River basin is the major cause of the reduction in channel width upstream from Grand Island. From simple geometrical considerations of macroform shape, an equation is developed to predict the depth and duration of flow required to erode the stoss sides of the macroforms to remove new vegetal growth each year. The methods developed in this report to eliminate vegetal growth on macroforms may provide a useful management tool for controlling width of the Platte River channels. Although further testing is required to establish the validity of these methods at actual stream sites, a sample calculation for the Silver Creek reach shows good agreement between the flow conditions predicted by the methods developed in this report and actual flow conditions. Areally distributed recharge to and discharge from the aquifer system adjacent to the Platte River between Overton and Grand Island were computed for four hypothetical water-management alternatives. Using stream-aquifer response functions, the stream depletions resulting from the different alternatives ranged from 53,000 acre-feet per year for increased surface-water irrigation to 177,000 acre-feet per year for increased ground-water pumpage. Current conditions would result in stream depletions of 125,000 acre-feet per year. Using the relationship between discharge and river stage, frequency curves of the stage in the river near the wildlife habitat area were computed using a 50-year sequence of historical streamflow at Overton, minus the stream depletions resulting from various management practices. For the management alternatives previously discussed, differences in the stage-frequency curves were minimal. For comparative purposes, three additional water-management alternatives whose application would change the incoming streamflow at Overton were simulated. Although in these alternatives the amounts of water that were diverted or imported were similar to the amounts in the previous alternatives, their effects on the stage-frequency curves were much more dramatic. Data were collected routinely at five major stations and periodically at 14 intervening stations. Each major station represents a cross section through which the transport of selected dissolved and suspended materials will be computed. The intervening stations represent locations at which data were collected for special studies such as: salt water migration, dissolved oxygen dynamics, and other synoptic studies. About 960 samples were analyzed for silicate, Kjeldhal nitrogen, nitrite, phosphorus, chlorophyll and suspended sediment, with additional samples analyzed for organic carbon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, sulfate, potassium, chloride, fluoride, seston and dissolved solids residue. This area includes the U.S. eastern continental margin from the mouth of Chesapeake Bay to approximately Cape Canaveral, Florida, including the upper Continental Slope and inner Blake Plateau. The area for possible sales and the previous areas leased are shown in figure 1; physiographic features of the region are shown in figure 2. </p><p>Six exploration wells have been drilled within the proposed lease area (figs. 3 and 4) but no commercial discoveries have been made. All six wells were drilled on the Continental Shelf in the Southeast Georgia Embayment. No commercial production has been obtained onshore in the region. The areas already drilled have thin sedimentary sections, and the deeper rocks are dominantly continental facies. Petroleum formation may have been hindered by a lack of organic material and sufficient burial for thermal maturation. Analysis of drill and seismic profiling data presented here, however, indicates that a much thicker sedimentary rock section containing a much higher proportion of marine deposits exists seaward of the exploratory wells on the Continental Shelf. It is an arid region that is subject to flash flooding. Although such flooding is infrequent, when it occurs in the steep, narrow canyon within which the road lies, the flow of water and accompanying debris may be hazardous to life and to any obstacle in its path. Historical records of amounts of rainfall and floodflow in the area are sparse, but data from the basin and from similar areas in the desert mountains of southern California are sufficient to provide a basis for estimates of the degree of hazard. Potential hazards from floodflows are defined for Wildrose Canyon and its nearby approach routes. The folded upper Tertiary subbottom was eroded during the first of five major Quaternary glacial advances over the inlet, and later fluvial, fluvioglacial, glacial, and marine erosional and depositional processes shaped the bottom to its present configuration.</p><p>Most of lower Cook Inlet has a relative smooth topography showing small local highs and lows, and slopes with gradients generally ranging from less than a degree to locally about 5°. Around the southwestern Kenai Peninsula and the Barren and Kodiak Islands, strong faulting with vertical movement has added to the complexity of bottom topography. Less complex, nonfaulted areas occur near Kalgin Island and south Kachemak Bay and around Augustine Island.</p><p>To facilitate description of lower Cook Inlet the estuarine body is divided into three large regions, northern and central, southern, and eastern; and these regions are divided into smaller physiographic areas on the basis of submarine topographic characteristics and 20-m depth zonations. Each area is named by combining the geographic name of a nearby place or feature on land with a common term for a marine physiographic feature -- trough, platform, ramp, slope, plateau. Townsend Cromwell Cruise IGAL-75-KC, 1975","docAbstract":"<p>The U.S. Geological Survey is conducting studies of the Alaskan continental shelf, identifying areas and processes of geological hazard that may affect resource development offshore. These hazards include areas of rapid accumulation of unconsolidated sediment, areas of intense erosional activity, and regions of submarine sliding and slumping; shallow faults are also being identified and classified.</p><p>The region of concern in this report is the continental shelf of the Northeast Gulf of Alaska, between Montague Island (longitude 148° W.) and Icy Bay (longitude 141° W.), figs. 2 and 3. During 1975, nearly 350 bottom grab samples were collected from this region by the Fisheries Research Ship Townsend Cromwell. These samples formed the basis for the initial characterization of the surface deposits.</p><p>Four major sedimentary units were defined on the basis of the bottom grab samples and seismic data (fig. 1) (Carlson and Molnia, 1977; Molnia and Carlson, 1978). These units are (1) Holocene glacial—marine sediments (normal marine deposition), (2) Holocene morainal deposits, (3) Quaternary glacial—marine sediments, and (4) Pleistocene and older lithified sediments. Each of these sedimentary units is in turn composed of various facies defined by lithological, structural, and biological parameters (Molnia and Carlson, 1980).</p><p>As part of the Northeast Gulf of Alaska project, I am examining the ostracode assemblages occurring in the Cromwell bottom grab samples. This report provides a tabulation of the fauna and flora contained in 102 selected bottom grab samples (figs. 2 and 3). A baseline datum is being established of the environmental factors that significantly control or contribute to the distributional patterns of modern ostracode species occurring in the Gulf of Alaska. The ostracode biofacies defined by characteristic assemblages of species, together with information on the sedimentary facies, provides a model of the environments presently occurring in the Gulf of Alaska, (Brouwers, 1981). The location of the proposed road corridor is shown on Fig. 1. The general geologic conditions within the corridor are described and their anticipated impacts on the proposed road are discussed. The data and conclusions presented in this report are suitable for evaluating general impacts; however, additional detailed studies will be required for design An expedient and economical method of air lifting water samples from isolated water-producing zones while drilling was utilized. Lithologic logs of drill cuttings and geophysical logs, including point resistance and spontaneous potential electric logs, gamma-ray logs, and caliper logs, were made. Chemical quality of water was determined for principal producing zones at each well. Dissolved solids from composite water samples ranged from 313 milligrams per liter in test well 0-1 north of the well field to 728 milligrams per liter in test well 0-3 within the well field. Each test well was pumped to determine maximum discharge, water-level drawdown, and recovery time. A leaking pump column on test well 0-1 prevented accurate measurement of drawdown on the well. Test well 0-2, located east of the well field, had a pumping rate of 376 gallons per minute and 13.11 feet of drawdown after 3 hours and 50 minutes; test well 0-3 had a maximum yield of 320 gallons per minute, a drawdown of 31.91 feet after 2 hours and 35 minutes of pumping, had a recovery time of 20 minutes; and test well 0-4, south of the well field, had a pumping rate of 200 gallons per minute with 63.34 feet of drawdown after 2 hours and 35 minutes.
