Water-level measurements were made on approximately 60 wells. The potentiometric surface ranged in altitude from more than 90 feet in the southeast part of the county to less than 35 feet northwest of Lake Panasoffkee in the west central area. These projects were made in cooperation with 6 State and local and 11 Federal agencies. State and local cooperative funding amounted to $720,670; Federal funding amounted to $2,437,628.</p><p>Eighty-three persons were employed--40 full time and 43 other than full time. In addition, the Water Resources Division maintains a project office at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. Work there is done in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the sole funding source.</p><p>Projects other than continuing programs for collection of hydrologic data included flood-characteristics and flood-mapping studies, geothermal-resource investigations, ground-water quality assessments, basin- and region-wide water-resource investigations, river quality-of-water monitoring studies, volcanic-ash related studies, and ground-water-trends and stream-gaging program evaluations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The first lease sale in the region (Lease Sale 42) was scheduled for January 31, 1978, by the Department of the Interior. However, the sale was delayed for 23 months by litigation before it was finally held on December 18, 1979. Of the 116 tracts offered, 63 tracts comprising 358,671 acres were leased as a result of the sale.</p><p>Eight exploration plans have been submitted by five oil companies since Lease Sale 42. The plans call for exploratory drilling on 11 separate tracts in the lease sale area. The plans and the required Federal drilling permits for two blocks, Exxon's block 133 and Shell's block 410, have been approved. Exploratory drilling on these two blocks began on July 24, 1981. The review process to approve the other plans and the required OCS drilling permits is in progress.</p><p>Onshore impacts resulting from OCS exploration in the North Atlantic are expected to be minimal. The same support base at Davisville, Rhode Island, used for drilling operations in the Mid-Atlantic Region is servicing North Atlantic activities. This facility has more than enough capacity and berthing space to service the level of activity expected during exploratory drilling. Well yields from the aquifer commonly are from 1,000 to 2,000 gallons per minute. Flow toward the main area of pumping stress is eastward from the Cache River and westward from the St. Francis River. The Memphis aquifer acts as a conduit through Crowleys Ridge for induced flow from the St. Francis River basin to the Cache River basn. Water use from the alluvial aquifer since the early 1900 's has been mostly for rice irrigation. Total pumpage for rice in 1978 was about 1,650 ,000 acre-feet, of which about 88 percent was pumped from the aquifer west of Crowleys Ridge. Water levels in wells west of the ridge in parts of Poinsett, Cross, and Craighead Counties in 1978 were 75 feet below land surface and declining about 2 feet per year. Digital-model analysis indicated that at the end of 1978 water was being removed from aquifer storage at the rate of 540,000 acre-feet per year, and streamflow, mostly from the Cache River and Bayou DeView, was being captured at the rate of 430,000 acre-feet per year. The objective is to provide the community of persons who have an interest in strong-motion programs an indication of the current status of the networks in this part of the world. The USGS also maintains a computerized Strong Motion Information Retrieval System (SMIRS) which permits searching for various types of information about the strong motion stations, records, and events (Converse, 1978). In general, the information in SMIRS is more current than the information in this list.</p><p>For convenience, the list has been arranged by country, north to south, alphabetically by states in the section for the United States, and then alphabetically by station name. Subsequent sections include a list by stations numbers, a cross-reference of obsolete station names, a cross-reference of station numbers as assigned by other agencies, and a cross-reference of three character designations for those that find that form of station designation useful. A list of the stations that were installed as required by a local building code or that are maintained by the owner of the facility appears in the Appendix. Many of the technical issues raised during the conference are less controversial now because of new information and insights gained during the first three years of the expanded research program conducted under the Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act. Utilization of research results by many groups of users has also improved during this period and further improvement in utilization appears likely.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Additional research is still required to resolve more completely the many complex technical issues summarized above and described in the papers contained in the proceedings. Improved certainty of research results on the evaluation of regional seismic hazards and risk is required before full utilization can be made by state and local governments who deal. with people frequently having a different perception of the hazard and its risk to them than that perceived by scientists or engineers.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Each of the papers contained in the proceedings contain throughtful recommendations for improving the state-of-knowledge. Two papers, in particular, focussed on this particular theme. The first was presented by Lynn Sykes in the Geologic Keynote Address. He identified geographic areas throughout the world which may be considered as counterparts or analogues of seismic zones in the United States. He concluded that much can be learned about prediction, tectonic settings, earthquake hazards, and earthquake risk for sites in the United States by studying their tectonic analogues in other countries. The second paper was presented by John Blume in the Engineering Keynote Address. He suggested 20 specific research topics that, in his opinion, will significantly advance the state-of-the-art in earthquakeresistant design. Gas flows in two wells were announced in November, but neither has been shown to be commercial at this time.</p><p>A third lease sale in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Lease Sale 59, is scheduled to be held in December 1981. The proposed sale area is in deeper water, seaward of existing leased tracts. This report concerns 165.8—m—long core CL-80-2, which was continuously cored in 8.0 m of water and has a 65.0 percent recovery. The sedinents in core CL-80-2 are composed primarily of clayey and silty sapropelic mud that is similar to those presently being deposited in the lake. The core ended in coarse CO2—charged sand at 165.8 m. Because of the available water-level control and the rough terrain throughout the area, the delineation of the water table was limited to 20-foot contour intervals. On the basis of recent river-stage and precipitation records, this delineation should represent near or slightly below average conditions.</p>\n<p>In addition to the alluvium, several other geologic formations crop out in the areas. These formations are capable of producing small to large quantities of water to wells, but the current (1981) pumping demand is small. The pressure heads in each of these formations appear to be in continuity, and the contours indicate that no barriers restrict ground-water movement from one formation to another. Several water-producing horizons may be present at many locations. The water-table map was constructed by using the head in the horizon that is nearest the land surface. The configuration of the water table closely approximates the topography. The water table slopes from the highland areas toward the Colorado River and small creeks.</p>\n<p>The delineation of the water table in the alluvium of the Colorado River is fairly well defined, and 10-feet contour intervals may be interpreted with confidence in the area called ' potential lignite-mining area.
