This program's primary purpose was to investigate a broad variety of sediment properties, many of which had not been previously studied in this region. Previous studies of sediments recovered by core drilling in this region were usually limited to one or two aspects of the sediment properties (Hathaway and others, 1979, table 2).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The AMCOR program was limited by two factors: water depth and penetration depth. Because the ship selected for the program, the <i>Glomar Conception</i>, lacked dynamic positioning capability, its anchoring capacity determined the maximum water depth in which drilling could take place. Although it was equipped to anchor in water 450 m deep and did so successfully at one site, we attmepted no drilling in water depths greater than 300 m. Wells owned by the South Dakota Department of Water and Natural Resources, Water Rights Division (SDWR) were measured as part of a special program to monitor water levels in aquifers after a county study was completed, and contains measurements made by both USGS and by the SDWR.</p><p>Water-level measurements that were made by the USGS were made with a weighted steel tape and are reported to the nearest .01 foot. Measurements made by SDWR were made with a cloth tape and popper and are reported to the nearest 0.1 foot. Measurements that are reported each fifth day were taken from a recorder chart and are the water levels at noon on that day. Data from digital recorders are reported daily and are the water levels at noon. All water-level data are given in feet below land surface datum. For readers who may prefer to use metric units rather than inch-pound units, the term feet may be converted to meters by multiplying by 0.3048.</p><p>The data in this report are presented alphabetically by county and within counties by ascending local well number. Information about each well is contained in table 1 preceeding the water-level measurements (table 2). The short name or number above the altitude in table 2 is used as an easy office reference or in the case of wells owned by SDWR, it is their well identification Most of the principal taxonomic soil types that occur in each county are represented by the 10 samples per county that were collected. There are numerous examples of soils that were developed from each of the several parent-material types in the State.</p><p>Each soil sample is a composite of several channel samples collected throughout a field from a depth 0-15cm. Soil material that passed a 2mm sieve was ground in a ceramic mill to -100 mesh and then analyzed for total concentrations of 70 elements. The methods of analysis and the lower limits of determination for each element are given in table 1. Most methods were described by Miesch (1976); delayed neutron counting for uranium and thorium was described by Millard (1976). The limits of determination for the methods did not always encompass the natural range of element concentrations in some samples, thus the elements may be classed into three groups: never detected, The purpose of the investigation was to provide geologic data so that the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey can jointly draft an Environmental Impact Statement. The location of the proposed road corridor is shown on Fig. 1. The general geologic conditions within the corridor are described and their anticipated impacts on the proposed road are discussed. The data and conclusions presented in this report are suitable for evaluating general impacts; however, additional detailed studies will be required for final design purposes.</p><p>The geologic conditions in the proposed road corridor were evaluated by reviewing published regional geologic maps, a field reconnaissance, and interpretation of aerial photographs. The largest scale geologic map available for the area is the 1:24,000, Geologic Map of the Bull Creek Quadrangle, Schroeder (1976). In early October, 1980, a field reconnaissance was made by Doug Stack and Ralph Mock of Chen and Associates, Inc. along the proposed road alignment. In addition, colored aerial photography at a scale of 1:15840 was available for our investigation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological These cores, approximately 1 m in length, are representative of geomorphic divisions within the riverine, transitional, and estuarine parts of the Potomac and of several tributaries. X-radiographs were made of an unsampled half of each core. The cores were subsampled at selected intervals for textural analyses. Model analysis indicates that only the area within a radius of about 2 miles of the dam on the present Sheyenne River would be affected by rising water levels as a result of a lake stage at 995 feet. The rise of water levels depends on time and hydraulic properties of the aquifer. The maximum projected rise in water levels at the various stages should occur in about 50 to 100 years. Evapotranspiration and existing drains will be effective in limiting the extent of water-level rise. The drainage basin is 17.7 mi<sup>2</sup> at the outlet of Lake Cochituate in Framingham. Principal tributaries to the lake are Beaverdam, Course, Pegan, and Snake Brooks. Beaverdam and Course Brooks flow into Fisk Pond, which empties into Lake Cochituate, whereas Pegan and Snake Brooks flow directly into Lake Cochituate. Surface drainage from the outlet of Lake Cochituate flows along Cochituate Brook into the Sudbury River at Framingham. The bridge, constructed with a large center pier and drawrest structure in 1908, constricts floodflows at the site. Variations in river sinuosity, slope, and alinement between 1946 and 1980, indicate that channel changes are significant during short (2- or 3-year) intervals of time. Over long periods, however, the channel appears to be in equilibrium. The flood plain extends several miles upstream and downstream from the site. Soils on the flood plain are sandy-silt loam, easily eroded by streamflow. Overflow to the flood plain is limited by levees along both banks that are overtopped or bypassed when floods exceed 130,000 cubic feet per second in the main channel. Backwater in the main channel upstream from the bridge is about 0.6 feet for flows exceeding 159,000 cubic feet per seconds, and extends more than 1.9 miles upstream, depending on the magnitude of flooding. The bridge structure occupies about 12 percent of the channel during all flows. The distribution of flow at the bridge is affected by piers for about 13 percent of the channel width. Highest velocities of flow are 13 feet per second.
