Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected three times during the study period. Samples of bottom material were collected in September. Concentrations of dissolved solids ranged from 45 to 391 milligrams per liter. Water hardness ranged from 31 milligrams per liter (soft) to 280 milligrams per liter (very hard). Fecal-coliform bacteria densities ranged from 40 to an estimated 540 colonies per 100 milliliters and may have exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for bathing waters. Total nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 2.2 milligrams per liter. Total phosphorus concentrations often exceeded the State standard and ranged from 0.08 to 0.46 milligrams per liter. Low dissolved-oxygen concentrations (2.5 to 5.4 milligrams per liter at midday) were measured in Larkin Creek and a major tributary. Iron (290 to 9,800 micrograms per liter), manganese (60 to 3,100 micrograms per liter), and mercury (0.0 to 0.2 micrograms per liter) concentrations at times exceeded Environmental Protection Agency criteria for domestic use or freshwater aquatic life. High concentrations of toxaphene (20 to 170 micrograms per kilogram dry weight) were present in all bottom-material samples. In two water samples, concentrations of dieldrin (0.01 micrograms per liter) exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency criterion for freshwater aquatic life. Polychlorinated biphenyls, several insecticides, and several herbicides (including 2, 4, 5-T) were present in water or bottom-material samples. The Panel Report (Bolt, 1980) addresses both the need and the scientific requirements for the new national network. The purpose of this study has been to translate the scientific requirements into an instrumentation concept for the NSDS.

There are literally hundreds, perhaps thousands, of seismographs in operation within the United States. Each serves an important purpose, but most have limited objectives in time, in region, or in the types of data that are being recorded. The concept of a national network, funded and operated by the Federal Government, is based on broader objectives that include continuity of time, uniform coverage, standardization of data format and instruments, and widespread use of the data for a variety of research purposes. A national digital seismograph network will be an important data resource for many years to come; hence, its design is likely to be of interest to most seismologists.

Seismologists have traditionally been involved in the development and field operation of seismic systems and thus have been familiar with both the potential value and the limitations of the data. However, in recent years of increasing technological sophistication, the development of data sstems has fallen more to system engineers, and this trend is likely to continue. One danger in this is that the engineers may misinterpret scientific objectives or subordinate them to purely technological considerations. Another risk is that the data users may misuse or misinterpret the data because they are not aware of the limitations of the data system. Perhaps the most important purpose of a design study such as this is to stimulate a dialogue between system engineers and potential data users.

The NDSN system concept presented in this report is intended to serve as a point of discussion -- a strawman, if you will. It is a feasible solution to what we perceive to be the objectives of the NDSN, but it is not a unique solution. Current technology offers a variety of choices in meeting design objectives. We have examined some but not all of these choices. Although our fundamental concept of the NDSN is based on current technology, we have anticipated developments in several fields where state-of-the-art is evolving rapidly, notably satellite communications and database management. If the installation of the NDSN is delayed 5 - 10 years, we anticipate that the methods proposed to record, communicate, and manage the data may change, but it is likely that the fundamental data requirements will be the same. Therefore, in this study we have concentrated more on the types of data that will be generated at the NDSN stations and less on specific hardware that might be used in the data system. When the NDSN is budgeted, a second, more hardware-oriented design study may be needed.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811046","usgsCitation":"Peterson, J., and Hutt, C.R., 1981, Preliminary design study for a National Digital Seismograph Network: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1046, 58 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811046.","productDescription":"58 p.","costCenters":[{"id":122,"text":"Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":9705,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1046/ofr81-1046.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.27 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1981-1046"},{"id":144231,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1046/coverthb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606ba4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, Jon","contributorId":67522,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"Jon","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161794,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hutt, Charles R. 0000-0001-9033-9195 bhutt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9033-9195","contributorId":1622,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hutt","given":"Charles","email":"bhutt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161793,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Records of Cenozoic and Mesozoic aquifers of the northern Great Plains area of Montana. Records of 1,124 wells and 640 springs are tabulated in the report; most of these data have been collected since 1959. Lithologic logs of 68 wells are also included. Chemical data for wells and springs include 290 water samples analyzed for major cation and anion concentrations and 282 water samples analyzed for miscellaneous-constituent concentrations. Increases in flow rate of some hot springs occurred within minutes of the earthquakes, followed by more gradual decreases in flow rate to pre-earthquake levels. Spring temperatures and chemistries also show no long-term variations following earthquakes. Water-quality data from these studies showed that water in the basin is of good quality for most of the beneficial uses defined by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Concentrations of dissolved constituents are substantially higher in the water in the two largest tributaries than in Cache Creek. Seasonal variations in dissolved constituents are also greater in the tributaries than in Cache Creek. Clear Lake has a major effect on water quality, resulting in little seasonal fluctuation in water quality in Cache Creek. Excessive voron and suspended-sediment concentrations are the greatest water-quality problems, according to existing data. Both of these problems are from natural sources. Water-quality monitoring is presently being conducted monthly at four sites by the California Department of Water Resurces and at several other sites by other agencies. Modifications in current monitoring are proposed to gain further information on diel dissolved-oxygen cycles, pesticides, and biological constituents that may adversely affect beneficial uses.
