This final technical report discusses several objectives and accomplishments of the first years effort of a project titled A Crustal Deformation Observatory Near the San Andreas Fault in Central California. This period saw the conclusion of the Hollister MWDM effort that has produced nearly continuous, high precision, line length measurements for the last 5 years. The establishment of an observatory similar to that used during the Hollister MWDM effort is underway near San Juan Bautista and both high precision vertical and horizontal measurements will commence in the near future. An interim measurement program was begun near Palmdale in Southern California during October 1980 and is continuing at the present time. Extensive electronic modification to the MWDM instrument has also been successfully completed during this reporting period. Each of these efforts will be discussed in more detail in the following sections of this report.

One of the most obvious forms of this interaction is the formation of furrow-like gouges or the sea floor. These gouges are caused by wind- and current-driven ice masses that rake the seabed with their keels. Since the advent of side-scanning sonar about 1970, the morphology and character of these seabed features have been under study. Ice gouges have been reported from the Bering Sea (Thor and Nelson, 1980); from the Chukchi Sea (Rex, 1955; Toimil, 1978); from the Beaufort Sea off Alaska (Brooks, 1974; Carsola, 1954; Reimnitz et al., 1972); from the Beaufort Sea off Canada (Kindle, 1924; Lewis, 1978; Pelletier and Shearer, 1972; Wahlgren, 1979); from the east coast of Canada (Harris, 1974); from the northeast Atlantic (Belderson et al., 1973); and from the Great Lakes (Berkson and Clay, 1973).

Because of the dip of the coal beds, the only economical method of mining would be by underground methods. In addition, minor occurrences of low-quality coal have been noted at more than 20 sites in both western and northeastern Oregon. About 2 million acres are now under lease for petroleum and gas exploration across the State. Natural gas was discovered in northwestern Oregon in 1979, and current production is about 17 million cubic feet per day from five wells. Thirteen Known Geothermal Resource Areas in several parts of the State cover 432,000 acres, and more than 420,000 acres are under lease for geothermal exploration. No hydrologic impacts have been noted from exploration and production of coal or other geoenergy resources in Oregon. The program was used to inventory 2,000 small watersheds in Sumter National Forest, South Carolina during 1980 and 1981. Drainage basins and stream segments were delineated in color on mylar overlays over U.S. Geological Survey 1:24 ,000-scale maps. Drainage basin characteristics were quantified and stored on eight-inch diskettes. The program can produce printouts and plots that summarize geomorphic data for each watershed. The program is adaptable to other locations. Because little hydrologic information is available for the area, the Borough contracted for the drilling of two test wells. It was found that: Both wells penetrated unconsolidated stratified clay, silt, sand, and gravel; each well penetrated a shallow unconfined and deeper confined aquifers; the water levels in the wells rise and fall with the tide; the chemical analyses indicate that the water quality meets the Alaska Drinking Water Standards, except for slightly high levels of manganese and pH; and the potential for saltwater intrusion should be evaluated as part of future studies. The computer model allows for the calculation of the effects of lithology, porosity, density, and the thickness of a horizontal layer of uniformly distributed radioactive material surrounding a centralized probe in a cylindrical borehole. The computer program also contains parameters for the calculation of the effects of well casing, drilling fluid, probe housing, and losses through the sodium-iodide crystal. Errors associated with the commonly used mathematical assumption of a point detector are eliminated in this model. Textural analysis of cores from this area indicates that the deposit consists of sandy to clayey silts overlying a well sorted relict sand. The maximum thickness of the fine sediments is about 6 meters as determined from a core near the center of this deposit.
The mineralogy of the <2 um size fraction is similar in both the fine sediments of the contemporary deposit and the underlying coarse sands. The assemblage consists of about 60% illite, 20% chlorite, and 10% kaolinite with minor amounts of mixed-layered clay and smectites.
Heavy mineral analysis from a core near the center of the deposit reveals that opaque minerals, framboidal pyrite, muscovite, hornblende, garnet, and tourmaline constitute over 65% of the total downcore assemblage.
Pyrite concentrations vary widely at some intervals and may reflect areas of micro-reducing conditions within the core or changes in source area with time. A persistent mica content indicates the presence of a low-energy environment throughout the depositional history of these fine sediments.
Downcore organic carbon concentrations are generally uniform in the fine sediments and average about 1.5 percent. Surficial concentration from a core near the center of this feature is about 10 times greater than concentrations for coarse-grained sands on the surrounding shelf.
