Since that time more modern instrumentation has allowed modification and further development beyond the basic single-tube fluid tiltmeter with a mechanical surface sensor. A number of instruments are discussed in connection with thermal errors in a paper by Bevan and Bilham [2] including one due to Huggett, et al. [3]. This particular instrument, the two-fluid tiltmeter, is the subject of this project. A laboratory single leg prototype developed by Terra Technology Corporation [4] was modified and expanded for use in a field test site in central California.</p><p>The two major differences in this fluid tiltmeter are the use of two parallel tubes filled with fluids of different thermal properties experiencing the same thermal environment and the design of the level sensors in the reservoirs. The latter being piezoelectric acoustic drivers (sonar type transducers) submerged in the liquid which detect the change in the surface height in the Age of community; average lot size; slope of land surface; composition, permeability, and thickness of surficial material; density, size , and orientation of fractures; maintenance of wastewater-treatment systems; and presence of animals are factors possibly contributing to the degradation of ground-water quality. When compared with effluent from aeration-treatment tanks, effluent fom septic-treatment tanks is characterized by greater biochemical oxygen demand and greater concentrations of detergents. When compared with effluent from septic-treatment tanks, effluent from aeration-treatment tanks is characterized by greater concentrations of dissolved oxygen, nitrite, nitrate, sulfate, and dissolved solids. Foty-eight days of record were obtained before the site was inundated. The young saltcedar, which had grown from seed earlier in the season , had an average daily evapotranspiration of 5.8 millimeters of water during the period August 17, 1971, to October 3, 1971. Daily values ranged from 9.2 millimeters to a low of 0.23 millimeters which occurred during a stormy day. We used intensive post-earthquake interview surveys to gather objective reports both of instances of unusual animal behavior as an earthquake precursor and of instances in which animals behaved normally prior to a moderate or large earthquake. We prepared briefing volumes describing the cultural significance and interpretation of seismicity for cultures other than our own with which we were likely to have contact. This information helped us assess the impact of cultural expectations on our data set. These briefing volumes are one of the work products of our project and are included in this final report.</p><p>Since our goal was to increase the ability to predict earthquakes, we avoided study of earthquakes with known foreshocks since in those cases the unusual animal behavior might have resulted simply from the foreshocks. Our data indicates that unusual animal behavior occurs a few hours to a few days before some, but not most, earthquakes that do not have known foreshocks.</p><p>Our studies of earthquake folklore support the same conclusion (pp 121-144 of this report). Even when unusual animal behavior is a precursor to a particular earthquake, most individual animals behave normally. This creates a signal to noise ratio that will reduce the potential for direct use of unusual -animal behavior in earthquake prediction, but the analysis of some animals reactions might help to identify physical precursors to at least some earthquakes.</p><p>Each phase of this research program has produced one or more completed work products. Maximum measured uranium and radium-226 concentrations dissolved in water were 3.7 micrograms per liter and 1.8 picocuries per liter , respectively. Maximum measured uranium and radium-226 concentrations in stream-bottom material were 5.5 micrograms per gram and 1.8 picocuries per gram, respectively. Maximum measured uranium and radium-226 concentrations on bottom material were 9.9 micrograms per gram and 3.9 picocuries per gram, respectively, in sediment-retention ponds, and 17 micrograms per gram and 3.5 picocuries per gram, respectively, in a mine pit. Maximum observed radon-222 concentration was 120 picocuries per liter in surface water and averaged 550 picocuries per liter at Formation Springs (site 10). All radionuclide concentrations were within existing State and Federal water-quality standards. Radionuclide concentrations were not significantly increased downstream from active mining sites. The Divide Section, the northernmost 39 miles of the Waterway, will consist, from north to south, of (1) a dredged channel, (2) the Divide Cut, and (3) an artifical lake impounded by the Bay Springs Dam. In all three , water will be at Tennessee River level. A three-dimensional digital model covering 3,273 square miles was constructed to simulate ground-water flow in the Gordo and Eutaw Formations and the Coffee Sand in the vicinity of the Divide Section. The model was calibrated to preconstruction water levels, then used to simulate the effects of stresses imposed by the construction of the Divide Section. The model indicates that the system stabilizes after major changes in conditions within a few months. The Divide Cut acts as a drain, lowering water levels as much as 55 feet. Drawdowns of 5 feet occur as much as 8 miles from the Cut. The 80-foot-high Bay Springs Dam raises ground-water levels by 5 feet as far as 6 miles from its impoundment. Drawdown is not likely to affect public water supplies significantly, but probably will adversely affect a relatively small number of private wells. Maximum measured flow of Otter Creek, an interrupted stream, was 1.2 cubic feet per second. The water chemistry was dominated by sodium, magnesium, and sulfate ions, with a maximum dissolved-solids concentration of 3,540 milligrams per liter. Chemistry of groundwater inflow is dominated by sodium, magnesium, and sulfate. A discharge of 156 cubic feet per second from the Tongue River Reservoir into the Tongue River complicated interpretation of groundwater discharge to the reach downstream from the reservoir. Many reaches of gain and loss were observed along the Tongue River; the flow near the mouth was 233 cubic feet per second. Minor changes in quality of the base flow indicate groundwater discharges dominated by sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate plus carbonate. Dissolved-solids concentration increased from 506 milligrams per liter near the dam to 630 milligrams per liter near the mouth. Maximum measured flow of Rosebud Creek was 19.0 cubic feet per second. Water quality in the upper reaches was dominated by magnesium, calcium , and bicarbonate, with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from 560 to 703 milligrams per liter. More than 12 inches of rain fell between 6 p.m. May 5, and 3 a.m. May 6. Damage caused by flooding was estimated by the Mobile Department of Public Works to be millions of dollars. Maximum water surface elevations on streams in the area were 2 to 3 feet higher than those that occurred during a similar flood in April 1980. The approximate extent of flooding delineated on maps using flood profiles obtained by field surveys will provide a basis for formulating effective flood plain zoning that could minimize existing and future flood problems.
