These data can be used in making rational decisions in formulating effective flood-plain regulations that would minimize flood problems in the Tallaboa Valley.

The Tallaboa Valley (fig. 1) lies on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico about 12 km (7.5 mi) west of the city of Ponce. The climate is semiarid with a mean annual precipitation of about 1,020 mm (40 in). It is a relatively small valley which until the late fifties was dedicated mainly to the product ion of sugarcane. Since then, the economy started changing from agriculture to industry. At present the lower part of the valley is completely industrialized. The upper part of the valley is used for agriculture--mostly as pastureland. The reach from Highway 132 downstream to the new Highway 2 is mainly agricultural with a few scattered communities. The lower part of the valley that includes the area from the Highway 2 bridge to the mouth is covered with heavy industry concerned with the refinement of oil, and associated industries.

The continuous growth of industry and consequently of the urban area of Peñuelas has encouraged growth onto the
flood plain. The study area is subject to flooding by the Rio Tallaboa and the Rio Guayanes, its main tributary. The Rio Guayanes is the- cause of flooding in the urban area of Penuelas, encompassing the reach from the northern edge of town downstream to Highway 132 where it joins the Rio Tallaboa.

Data are generally referred to in SI (International System) units followed by corresponding inch-pound units in parentheses. Water managers and local citizens are concerned that industrial pumping may reduce the esthetic and recreational value of local lakes. Some lake levels have declined as much as 8 feet since pumping began; the greatest declines occurred in lakes nearest the center of pumping.

Ground water occurs in three aquifers. The upper aquifer is unconfined and is hydraulically connected to most lakes and streams in the area. The upper two aquifers are hydraulically connected through a leaky confining layer, and water levels in the two aquifers fluctuate synchronously with changes in precipitation and changes in pumping from either aquifer. The hydraulic connection of the lower confined aquifer, the deepest of the three aquifers, to the other two aquifers is poor. Drawdowns caused by pumping have stabilized in all three aquifers. This indicates that the pumping is in equilibrium with the hydrologic boundaries. In the lower two aquifers, the potentiometric surfaces near some production wells are below sea level; however, no salt water has intruded the aquifers as far as the pumped wells. If intrusion occurs or if additional water supplies are needed, another potential site for ground-water development is the middle Beaver Creek basin, 7-10 miles east of the industrial area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81685","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and Kenai Peninsula Borough","usgsCitation":"Nelson, G.L., 1981, Hydrology and the effects of industrial pumping in the Nikiski area, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-685, iv, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81685.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144638,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0685/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":419484,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0685/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","city":"Nikiski","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -151.45826580748331,\n              60.746844331157206\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.45826580748331,\n              60.6716276310604\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.2111813821138,\n              60.6716276310604\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.2111813821138,\n              60.746844331157206\n            ],\n            [\n              -151.45826580748331,\n              60.746844331157206\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e83f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, Gordon L.","contributorId":55443,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nelson","given":"Gordon","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161513,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In addition, scanning electron micrographs of all identified species, subspecies, and significant paleoenvironmentally representative aberrant forms from the region have been published for the first time. Because of the importance of this work, and of the extensive diagenetic alteration of the hemipelagic deposits, as well as density of plant cover on available exposures, precise documentation of each location studied was essential. Thus, a road log was constructed (Appendix 1), in conjunction with documentary pace-and-compass readings and vertical measurements within a section to actual area of collection. A comprehensive investigation of the area 's ground-water resources will be made as part of the U.S. Geological Survey 's Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) program. Basaltic and sedimentary rocks in the Snake River Plain yield large quantities of water that are vital to the area 's agricultural economy. Basaltic rocks predominate in the eastern Snake River Plain and have especially high water-yielding capabilities. Surface water, largely from the Snake River, is extensively used for irrigation and is a major source of recharge to the ground-water system. Springs issuing from basaltic rocks that form the Snake River Canyon wall near Twin Falls are the major points of ground-water discharge. Increased use of ground water for irrigation is causing concern as to the effect of large-scale withdrawals on spring flow. Ground-water flow models will be used to improve understanding of the hydrologic system, and, if feasible, to aid in evaluating management alternatives. Ground-water quality will be defined and geochemical techniques used to determine the effects of water-rock reactions on water quality. Several reports are planned on different phases of the project, concluding with a summary report. Maximum measured flow of Otter Creek, an interrupted stream, was 1.2 cubic feet per second. The water chemistry was dominated by sodium, magnesium, and sulfate ions, with a maximum dissolved-solids concentration of 3,540 milligrams per liter. Chemistry of groundwater inflow is dominated by sodium, magnesium, and sulfate. A discharge of 156 cubic feet per second from the Tongue River Reservoir into the Tongue River complicated interpretation of groundwater discharge to the reach downstream from the reservoir. Many reaches of gain and loss were observed along the Tongue River; the flow near the mouth was 233 cubic feet per second. Minor changes in quality of the base flow indicate groundwater discharges dominated by sodium, sulfate, and bicarbonate plus carbonate. Dissolved-solids concentration increased from 506 milligrams per liter near the dam to 630 milligrams per liter near the mouth. Maximum measured flow of Rosebud Creek was 19.0 cubic feet per second. Water quality in the upper reaches was dominated by magnesium, calcium , and bicarbonate, with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from 560 to 703 milligrams per liter. Sodium, sulfate, and dissolved solids increase downstream.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801298","usgsCitation":"Lee, R.W., Slagle, S.E., and Stimson, J.R., 1981, Magnitude and chemical quality of base flow of Otter Creek, Tongue River, and Rosebud Creek, southeastern Montana, October 26-November 5, 1977: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1298, Report: iv, 29 p.; 1 Plate: 19.02 x 18.56 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801298.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 29 p.; 1 Plate: 19.02 x 18.56 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":429509,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11517.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":37801,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1298/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37802,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1298/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142534,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1298/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -107.25,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.25,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.5,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.5,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.25,\n              46.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db6494e7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, Roger W.","contributorId":105273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Roger","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160631,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Slagle, Steven E.","contributorId":35284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Slagle","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160629,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stimson, James R.","contributorId":77152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stimson","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160630,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Studies show that annual ground-water pumpage there has increased since 1945 and has exceeded mean annual recharge since 1966. Continued and increased stress on the aquifer system of the valley is expected because population in the valley is predicted to double by 1998 and triple by 2020, based on 1977 population figures. The U.S. Geological Survey proposes a 10-year program to develop a data base to aid in evaluation of future water-management alternatives. A study plan has been developed that describes present and potential problems and objectives of the program, and outlines work items to be undertaken in the study area. Low concentrations of aqueous chemical and radio-active wastes have been discharged to shallow ponds and to shallow or deep wells on the site since 1952. The regional water table ranges from about 200 feet to more than 1,000 feet below land surface within the INEL boundaries. The gradient of the water table averages about 4 feet per mile to the south-southwest. During the latest period of record, 1974 through 1978, the position of the water table has shown a net decline that ranges from 0.2 foot near the northern boundary of the INEL to more than 10 feet in the central and southern parts of the site. Recharge from surface water has been minimal or non-existent during the latter part of this period.

A large body of perched ground water has formed in the basalt underlying the waste disposal ponds in the Test Reactor Area. This perched zone contains tritium, chromium-51, cobalt-60, strontium-90, and several nonradioactive ions. Tritium is the only mappable waste constituent in that portion of the Snake River Plain aquifer directly underlying this perched zone.

Low concentrations of chemical and low-level radioactive wastes enter directly into the Snake River Plain aquifer through the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP) disposal well. From 1974 through 1978, this 600-foot well was used to discharge a total of 1,861 million gallons of waste water which contained 1,697 curies of radioactivity, ninety-five percent of which was tritium. Tritium has been discharged to the well since 1953 and has formed the largest waste plume, about 28 square miles in area, in the regional aquifer, and minute concentrations have migrated downgradient a horizontal distance of 7.5 miles.

Other waste plumes south of the ICPP contain sodium, chloride, nitrate, and the resultant specific conductance. These plumes have similar configurations, flow southward, and the contaminants are in general laterally dispersed in that portion of the aquifer underlying the INEL. Other waste plumes, containing strontium-90 and iodine-129, cover small areas near their points of discharge because strontium-90 is sorbed from solution as it moves through the aquifer and iodine-129 is discharged in very low quantities. Cesium-137 is also discharged through the well but it is strongly sorbed from solution and has never been detected in a sample of ground water at the INEL. Radionuclide plume size and concentrations therein are controlled by aquifer flow conditions, the quantity discharged, radioactive decay, sorption, dilution by dispersion, and perhaps other chemical reactions. Distributions of non-radoactive chemical wastes are subject to the same processes except for radioactive decay.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81526","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Barraclough, J.T., Lewis, B.D., and Jensen, R.G., 1981, Hydrologic conditions at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, Idaho, emphasis: 1974-1978: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-526, v, 77 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81526.","productDescription":"v, 77 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405122,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0526/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":149950,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0526/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Idaho National Engineering Laboratory","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.09625244140625,\n              43.51370083689698\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.98501586914062,\n              43.51370083689698\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.98501586914062,\n              43.57641143300888\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.09625244140625,\n              43.57641143300888\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.09625244140625,\n              43.51370083689698\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db611676","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barraclough, Jack T.","contributorId":8822,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barraclough","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":178479,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lewis, Barney D.","contributorId":93873,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lewis","given":"Barney","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":178481,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Jensen, Rodger G.","contributorId":27420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jensen","given":"Rodger","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":178480,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Annual water-level measurements are made by personnel from the Division of Water Resources, Kansas State Board of Agriculture, and from the U.S. Geological Survey . State-agency support for this cooperative program is provided by the Kansas Geological Survey.

Water-level measurements are made in mid-winter of each year, mostly in January, to minimize the effect of seasonal pumping. However, a few water-level measurements that are made in mid-winter of some years may reflect either the effects of recent pumping by the observation well or by nearby wells, or the effects of barometric-pressure changes. Thus, a significant change in water-levels for a particular well during a 1-year period may represent only a temporary condition, and any indication of a developing trend should be based on a comparison of changes that occur over a period of several years.

Hydrologic data in this report relate water-level changes from: (1) A \"base-reference year\" ( predevelopment year), (2) a year of abnormally high rainfall and minimum pumpage (1966 or 1974) , and (3) each of seven consecutive years of measurement (1975-81). The \"base-reference year\" is designated as 1940 for the southwestern area, 1944 for the south-central area, and 1950 for the northwestern and west-central areas (fig. 1). Water levels for the \"base-reference year\" are established by measurements made during that year and by interpretation of maps showing water-level altitudes. Depth to bedrock, used in computing saturated thickness of water-bearing deposits, are based on driller' s logs, reported depths of wells, and interpretation of maps showing the altitude of the bedrock surface.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811001","usgsCitation":"Pabst, M.E., 1981, January 1981 water levels, and data related to water-level changes, western and south-central Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1001, 168 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811001.","productDescription":"168 p.","numberOfPages":"171","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":359170,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1001/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143110,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1001/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-98.4868,38.6968],[-98.4809,38.6972],[-98.4815,38.5214],[-97.9262,38.5227],[-97.9242,38.2608],[-97.9213,38.2607],[-97.922,38.1737],[-97.7018,38.1739],[-97.7017,37.9123],[-97.7021,37.8253],[-97.6986,37.8253],[-97.6978,37.7351],[-97.7718,37.7342],[-97.8073,37.7335],[-97.8075,37.7108],[-97.8068,37.4746],[-97.807,37.3867],[-98.3503,37.3854],[-98.4668,37.385],[-98.4661,37.4716],[-99.0136,37.471],[-99.0135,37.3849],[-99.434,37.3824],[-99.4462,37.3832],[-99.5435,37.3828],[-99.5551,37.3832],[-99.5557,37.4689],[-100.1068,37.4751],[-100.106,37.3862],[-100.0898,37.3855],[-100.0902,36.9983],[-100.1079,36.9983],[-100.6337,36.9986],[-100.9441,36.9988],[-100.9536,36.9988],[-101.0671,36.9978],[-101.2679,36.9967],[-101.544,36.9952],[-101.5552,36.9951],[-101.918,36.9929],[-101.9881,36.9925],[-102.0281,36.9925],[-102.0417,36.9922],[-102.0423,36.9922],[-102.042,37.1102],[-102.0421,37.156],[-102.0421,37.1705],[-102.0422,37.2],[-102.0422,37.2127],[-102.0423,37.244],[-102.0423,37.2562],[-102.0425,37.3882],[-102.043,37.6429],[-102.0432,37.7384],[-102.0443,38.2627],[-102.0443,38.2676],[-102.0454,38.6138],[-102.0455,38.6953],[-102.0461,39.0456],[-102.0463,39.1339],[-102.0475,39.5689],[-102.0476,39.5737],[-102.0485,40.0039],[-101.8612,40.0039],[-101.7787,40.0039],[-101.6233,40.0042],[-101.5453,40.0043],[-101.4107,40.0045],[-101.3694,40.0043],[-101.3224,40.0042],[-101.299,40.0042],[-101.0006,40.0037],[-100.7597,40.0033],[-100.7568,40.0033],[-100.7399,40.0033],[-100.6854,40.0033],[-100.1946,40.0028],[-100.1919,40.0028],[-100.1784,40.0028],[-100.1793,39.9144],[-100.1797,39.8287],[-100.1807,39.7407],[-100.181,39.6541],[-100.1814,39.5675],[-100.1635,39.5673],[-100.0788,39.5675],[-100.0507,39.5674],[-99.9642,39.5671],[-99.9373,39.5669],[-99.852,39.5665],[-99.8251,39.5668],[-99.7398,39.5672],[-99.7135,39.567],[-99.6282,39.5674],[-99.6019,39.5672],[-99.6024,39.4806],[-99.6035,39.3949],[-99.6039,39.3074],[-99.6044,39.2194],[-99.6054,39.1329],[-99.7027,39.1329],[-99.7157,39.1323],[-99.8142,39.1322],[-99.8279,39.132],[-99.9251,39.1323],[-99.9388,39.1326],[-100.0355,39.1324],[-100.0521,39.1326],[-100.1488,39.1318],[-100.1543,38.6966],[-100.0269,38.6964],[-99.5982,38.6964],[-99.5847,38.6961],[-99.5854,38.3489],[-99.0332,38.3484],[-99.0334,38.697],[-98.5976,38.6954],[-98.5906,38.6963],[-98.4868,38.6968]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Barton\",\"state\":\"KS\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db666fd8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pabst, Marilyn E.","contributorId":25566,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pabst","given":"Marilyn","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161636,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
