Although variability in water-year precipitation explains more of the variability in water-year UCRB streamflow than water-year UCRB temperature, since the late 1980s, increases in temperature in the UCRB have caused a substantial reduction in UCRB runoff efficiency (the ratio of streamflow to precipitation). These reductions in flow because of increasing temperatures are the largest documented temperature-related reductions since record keeping began. Increases in UCRB temperature over the past three decades have resulted in a mean UCRB water-year streamflow departure of −1306 million m3 (or −7% of mean water-year streamflow). Additionally, warm-season (April through September) temperature has had a larger effect on variability in water-year UCRB streamflow than the cool-season (October through March) temperature. The greater contribution of warm-season temperature, relative to cool-season temperature, to variability of UCRB flow suggests that evaporation or snowmelt, rather than changes from snow to rain during the cool season, has driven recent reductions in UCRB flow. It is expected that as warming continues, the negative effects of temperature on water-year UCRB streamflow will become more evident and problematic.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Meteorological Society","doi":"10.1175/EI-D-17-0007.1","usgsCitation":"McCabe, G.J., Wolock, D.M., Pederson, G.T., Woodhouse, C.A., and McAfee, S., 2017, Evidence that recent warming is reducing upper Colorado River flows: Earth Interactions, v. 21, no. 10, p. 1-14, https://doi.org/10.1175/EI-D-17-0007.1.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"14","ipdsId":"IP-082888","costCenters":[{"id":438,"text":"National Research Program - In this study, we investigate the utility of combining principal component analysis (PCA) of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to identify simplifying relationships within a large number of samples and subsequently evaluate a subset that encompasses the full spectrum or range of mineral and chemical variability within a vertical section. Samples were collected and analyzed from a vertical core of the Shublik Formation, a heterogeneous, phosphate-rich, calcareous mudstone-to-marl unit deposited in the Arctic Alaska Basin (AAB) during the Middle and Late Triassic. Because of increasing water demands at the NTC, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Army, completed several studies to evaluate water resources in the developed and undeveloped groundwater basins underlying the NTC. In all of the developed basins, groundwater withdrawals exceed natural recharge, resulting in water-level declines. However, artificial recharge of treated wastewater has had some success in offsetting water-level declines in Irwin Basin. Additionally, localized water-quality changes have occurred in some parts of Irwin Basin as a result of human activities (i.e., wastewater disposal practices, landscape irrigation, and/or leaking pipes). As part of the multi-faceted NTC-wide studies, traditional datacollection methods were used and include lithological and geophysical logging at newly drilled boreholes, hydrologic data collection (i.e. water-level, water-quality, aquifer tests, wellbore flow). Because these data cover a small portion of the 1,177 square-mile (mi2 ) NTC, regional mapping, including geologic, gravity, aeromagnetic, and InSAR, also were done. In addition, ground and airborne electromagnetic surveys were completed and analyzed to provide more detailed subsurface information on a regional, base-wide scale. The traditional and regional ground and airborne data are being analyzed and will be used to help develop preliminary hydrogeologic framework and groundwater-flow models in all basins. This report is intended to provide an overview of recent water-resources and land-surface deformation studies at the NTC.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"2017 Desert Wildlife rehabilitation is often costly, and the resulting benefits differ depending on whether one’s interest is in the welfare of individual animals or conserving populations. Two examples of this dilemma include the rehabilitation of oiled sea otters following the Exxon Valdez spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and the rehabilitation of stranded sea otter pups in central California. In the first example, substantial financial investment resulted in little or no benefits for population conservation. In the second example, the potential for population-level benefits is context dependent: in populations near carrying capacity the conservation impacts are negligible, whereas in isolated, low-density populations rehabilitation and release can be an effective conservation tool. Wildlife rehabilitation is valued by people for various reasons, but recognizing and acknowledging the difference between individual and population welfare is an important step toward effective wildlife conservation.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Effective conservation science: Data not dogma","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/oso/9780198808978.003.0020","isbn":"9780198808978","usgsCitation":"Estes, J.A., and Tinker, M.T., 2017, Rehabilitating sea otters: Feeling good versus being effective, chap. 20 of Effective conservation science: Data not dogma, https://doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808978.003.0020.","ipdsId":"IP-081357","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":351821,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":1,"text":"Sacramento PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee7abe4b0da30c1bfc351","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Kareiva, Peter","contributorId":58160,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kareiva","given":"Peter","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729019,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Marvier, Michelle","contributorId":168813,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Marvier","given":"Michelle","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729020,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Silliman, Brian","contributorId":11051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Silliman","given":"Brian","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729021,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"Estes, James A. jim_estes@usgs.gov","contributorId":53325,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Estes","given":"James","email":"jim_estes@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":6949,"text":"University of California, Santa Cruz","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":713468,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tinker, M. We use gravity and recently released detailed aeromagnetic data to map strands of these faults, examine structure within the fault zones and provide estimates of right-lateral offset. Gradients in gravity and aeromagnetic data define physical property contrasts that coincide with mapped strands of the faults and allow for extension of these faults, where concealed, to indicate continuity between the Soda–Avawatz and Bristol–Granite Mountains faults. Gravity data reveal local tectonic basins west of Silver Lake, beneath Soda Lake, and southwest of the Marble Mountains that are approximately 9–15 km long, 3–5 km wide, and 1–1.5 km deep. The basins are located where the local fault traces strike more northerly than the overall fault zone strike, suggesting that these basins are transtensional (pull-apart). If the lengths of these basins can be used as a proxy for rightlateral offset, the Soda–Avawatz and Bristol–Granite Mountains faults may have up to 9–15 km of post-early Miocene offset, consistent with our offset estimates from correlative magnetic anomalies across the fault zone.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"ECSZ does it: Revisiting the Eastern California Shear Zone 2017 Desert Symposium Field Guide and Proceedings","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"2017 Desert Symposium","language":"English","publisher":"California State University Desert Studies Center","usgsCitation":"Langenheim, V., and Miller, D., 2017, Connecting the Soda–Avawatz and Bristol–Granite Mountains faults with gravity andaeromagnetic data, Mojave Desert, California, in ECSZ does it: Revisiting the Eastern California Shear Zone 2017 Desert Symposium Field Guide and Proceedings, p. 83-92.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"92","ipdsId":"IP-083724","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":350038,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":347024,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://nsm.fullerton.edu/dsc/desert-studies-center-additional-information"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.5,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.5,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.5,\n              34.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60faf9e4b06e28e9c22a5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langenheim, Victoria E. 0000-0003-2170-5213 zulanger@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2170-5213","contributorId":151042,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langenheim","given":"Victoria E.","email":"zulanger@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":714249,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Miller, David M. 0000-0003-3711-0441 dmiller@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3711-0441","contributorId":140769,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"David M.","email":"dmiller@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":309,"text":"Geology and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":714250,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We report ∼300 SO2 flux measurements from 10 volcanoes and gas ratios from 11 volcanoes in Costa Rica and Nicaragua representing the most extensive available assessment of this ∼500 km arc segment. The SO2 flux from SCAVA is estimated at 6,240 ± 1,150 T/d, about a factor of three higher than previous estimations (1972–2013). We attribute this increase in part to our more complete assessment of the arc. Another consideration in interpreting the difference is the context of increased volcanic activity, as there were more eruptions in 2015–2016 than in any period since ∼1980. A potential explanation for increased degassing and volcanic activity is a change in crustal stress regime (from compression to extension, opening volcanic conduits) following two large (Mw > 7) earthquakes in the region in 2012. To measure air temperature at biologically relevant scales in the field, ecologists often use small, portable temperature sensors. Sensors must be shielded from solar radiation to provide accurate temperature measurements, but our review of 18 years of ecological literature indicates that shielding practices vary across studies (when reported at all), and that ecologists often invent and construct ad hoc radiation shields without testing their efficacy. We performed two field experiments to examine the accuracy of temperature observations from three commonly used portable data loggers (HOBO Pro, HOBO Pendant, and iButton hygrochron) housed in manufactured Gill shields or ad hoc, custom‐fabricated shields constructed from everyday materials such as plastic cups. We installed this sensor array (five replicates of 11 sensor‐shield combinations) at weather stations located in open and forested sites. HOBO Pro sensors with Gill shields were the most accurate devices, with a mean absolute error of 0.2°C relative to weather stations at each site. Error in ad hoc shield treatments ranged from 0.8 to 3.0°C, with the largest errors at the open site. We then deployed one replicate of each sensor‐shield combination at five sites that varied in the amount of urban impervious surface cover, which presents a further shielding challenge. Bias in sensors paired with ad hoc shields increased by up to 0.7°C for every 10% increase in impervious surface. Our results indicate that, due to variable shielding practices, the ecological literature likely includes highly biased temperature data that cannot be compared directly across studies. If left unaddressed, these errors will hinder efforts to predict biological responses to climate change. We call for greater standardization in how temperature data are recorded in the field, handled in analyses, and reported in publications.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/ece3.3499","usgsCitation":"Terando, A.J., Youngsteadt, E., Meineke, E.K., and Prado, S.G., 2017, Ad hoc instrumentation methods in ecological studies produce highly biased temperature measurements: Ecology and Evolution, v. 7, no. 23, p. 9890-9904, https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.3499.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"9890","endPage":"9904","ipdsId":"IP-086574","costCenters":[{"id":565,"text":"Southeast Climate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":469268,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.3499","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":354883,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"23","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-10-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5b46e624e4b060350a15d25b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Terando, Adam J. 0000-0002-9280-043X aterando@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9280-043X","contributorId":173447,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Terando","given":"Adam","email":"aterando@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":565,"text":"Southeast Climate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":737565,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Youngsteadt, Elsa","contributorId":205500,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Youngsteadt","given":"Elsa","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":7091,"text":"North Carolina State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":737566,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Meineke, Emily K.","contributorId":205501,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Meineke","given":"Emily","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":37111,"text":"Harvard University Herbaria","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":737567,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Prado, Sara G.","contributorId":204504,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Prado","given":"Sara","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":7091,"text":"North Carolina State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":737568,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Subnational jurisdictions combined with local stakeholders, with support from federal governments, developed plans to remediate and restore these sites. Biotelemetry (the tracking of animals using electronic tags) provides information on the spatial ecology of fish in the wild relevant to habitat management and stock assessment. Here, seven case studies are presented where biotelemetry data were directly incorporated within the AOC Remedial Action Plan (RAP) process. Specific applications include determining seasonal fish–habitat associations to inform habitat restoration plans, identifying the distribution of pollutant-indicator species to identify exposure risk to contamination sources, informing the development of fish passage facilities to enable fish to access fragmented upstream habitats, and assessing fish use of created or restored habitats. With growing capacity for fish biotelemetry research in the Great Lakes, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of incorporating biotelemetry into AOC RAP processes to improve the science and practice of restoration and to facilitate the delisting of AOCs.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s00267-017-0937-x","usgsCitation":"Brooks, J., Boston, C., Doka, S.E., Gorsky, D., Gustavson, K., Hondorp, D.W., Isermann, D.A., Midwood, J.D., Pratt, T., Rous, A.M., Withers, J.L., Krueger, C., and Cooke, S.J., 2017, Use of fish telemetry in rehabilitation planning, management, and monitoring in Areas of Concern in the Laurentian Great Lakes: Environmental Management, v. 60, no. 6, p. 1139-1154, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00267-017-0937-x.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1139","endPage":"1154","ipdsId":"IP-087436","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":353940,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Great Lakes","volume":"60","issue":"6","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-09-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee79ce4b0da30c1bfc2fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brooks, J.L.","contributorId":10759,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooks","given":"J.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Boston, C.","contributorId":204672,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boston","given":"C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doka, Susan E.","contributorId":173419,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Doka","given":"Susan","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":13677,"text":"Fisheries and Oceans Canada","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":734639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gorsky, Dimitry","contributorId":169691,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gorsky","given":"Dimitry","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Gustavson, K.","contributorId":204674,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gustavson","given":"K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Hondorp, Darryl W. 0000-0002-5182-1963 dhondorp@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5182-1963","contributorId":5376,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hondorp","given":"Darryl","email":"dhondorp@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":734615,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Isermann, Daniel A. 0000-0003-1151-9097 disermann@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1151-9097","contributorId":5167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Isermann","given":"Daniel","email":"disermann@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":734614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Midwood, Jonathan D.","contributorId":74659,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Midwood","given":"Jonathan","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Pratt, T. We measured concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and suspended sediment (SS) upstream and downstream of paired ponds and control reaches. Nitrate and SS concentrations decreased, ammonium concentrations increased, and SRP concentrations were unaffected downstream of the ponds and relative to the control reaches. The pond effect on nitrate concentration was a reduction of 112 ± 55 μg-N/L (19%) compared to a control-reach—influenced reduction of 28 ± 17 μg-N/L. The pond effect on ammonium concentration was an increase of 9.47 ± 10.9 μg-N/L (59%) compared to the control-reach—influenced reduction of 1.49 ± 1.37 μg-N/L. The pond effect on SS concentration was a decrease of 3.41 ± 1.68 mg/L (40%) compared to a control-reach—influenced increase of 0.56 ± 0.27 mg/L. Ponds on lower-order streams reduced nitrate concentrations by greater amounts compared to those in higher-order streams. Cats allowed outdoors and feral cats kill and eat a wide variety of vertebrates such as small mammals, birds, and reptiles","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"San Diego County Mammal Atlas","language":"English","publisher":"San Diego Society of Natural History","usgsCitation":"Diffendorfer, J., 2017, Domestic cat, chap. of San Diego County Mammal Atlas, p. 272-275.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"272","endPage":"275","ipdsId":"IP-075095","costCenters":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":351550,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":351549,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://shop.sdnhm.org/a567/san-diego-county-mammal-atlas.html"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee7abe4b0da30c1bfc347","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Diffendorfer, James E. 0000-0003-1093-6948 jediffendorfer@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1093-6948","contributorId":3208,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Diffendorfer","given":"James E.","email":"jediffendorfer@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":726548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Here we try to analyze primary features of this type of event by using dynamic rupture simulations based on a multifault interface and later compare our results with space geodetic models. Our results show that starting from homogeneous prestress conditions, slip heterogeneity can be achieved as a result of variable dip angle along strike and the modulation imposed by step over segments. We also considered effects from a topographic free surface and find that although this does not produce significant first-order effects for this earthquake, even a low topographic dome such as the Cucapah range can affect the rupture front pattern and fault slip rate. Finally, we inverted available interferometric synthetic aperture radar data, using the same geometry as the dynamic rupture model, and retrieved the space geodetic slip distribution that serves to constrain the dynamic rupture models. The one to one comparison of the final fault slip pattern generated with dynamic rupture models and the space geodetic inversion show good agreement. Our results lead us to the following conclusion: in a possible multifault rupture scenario, and if we have first-order geometry constraints, dynamic rupture models can be very efficient in predicting large-scale slip heterogeneities that are important for the correct assessment of seismic hazard and the magnitude of future events. Geometric distortion is especially a problem with pushbroom type sensors, such as the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Geometric distortions occur at a range of frequencies that may not be obvious in the image products, but can cause problems with stereo image correlation in the production of digital elevation models, and in measuring surface changes over time in orthorectified images. The HiRISE focal plane comprises a staggered array of fourteen charge-coupled devices (CCDs) with pixel IFOV of 1 microradian. The high spatial resolution of HiRISE makes it both sensitive to, and an excellent recorder of jitter. We present an algorithm using Fourier analysis to resolve the jitter function for a HiRISE image that is then used to update instrument pointing information to remove geometric distortions from the image. Implementation of the jitter analysis and image correction is performed on selected HiRISE images. Resulting corrected images and updated pointing information are made available to the public. Results show marked reduction of geometric distortions. Since commencing operations in 2004 it has imaged ~ 77 % of Mars at 20 m/pixel or better. The instrument team uses the Video Image Communication And Retrieval (VICAR) software to produce and archive a range of data products from uncalibrated and radiometrically calibrated images to controlled digital topographic models (DTMs) and orthoimages and regional mosaics of DTM and orthophoto data (Gwinner et al. 2009; 2010b; 2016). Alternatives to this highly effective standard processing pipeline are nevertheless of interest to researchers who do not have access to the full VICAR suite and may wish to make topographic products or perform other (e. g., spectrophotometric) analyses prior to the release of the highest level products. We have therefore developed software to ingest HRSC images and model their geometry in the USGS Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS3), which can be used for data preparation, geodetic control, and analysis, and the commercial photogrammetric software SOCET SET (® BAE Systems; Miller and Walker 1993; 1995) which can be used for independent production of DTMs and orthoimages.

The initial implementation of this capability utilized the then-current ISIS2 system and the generic pushbroom sensor model of SOCET SET, and was described in the DTM comparison of independent photogrammetric processing by different elements of the HRSC team (Heipke et al. 2007). A major drawback of this prototype was that neither software system then allowed for pushbroom images in which the exposure time changes from line to line. Except at periapsis, HRSC makes such timing changes every few hundred lines to accommodate changes of altitude and velocity in its elliptical orbit. As a result, it was necessary to split observations into blocks of constant exposure time, greatly increasing the effort needed to control the images and collect DTMs.

Here, we describe a substantially improved HRSC processing capability that incorporates sensor models with varying line timing in the current ISIS3 system (Sides 2017) and SOCET SET. This enormously reduces the work effort for processing most images and eliminates the artifacts that arose from segmenting them. In addition, the software takes advantage of the continuously evolving capabilities of ISIS3 and the improved image matching module NGATE (Next Generation Automatic Terrain Extraction, incorporating area and feature based algorithms, multi-image and multi-direction matching) of SOCET SET, thus greatly reducing the need for manual editing of DTM errors. We have also developed a procedure for geodetically controlling the images to Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data by registering a preliminary stereo topographic model to MOLA by using the point cloud alignment (pc_align) function of the NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline (ASP; Moratto et al. 2010). This effectively converts inter-image tiepoints into ground control points in the MOLA coordinate system. The result is improved absolute accuracy and a significant reduction in work effort relative to manual measurement of ground control. The ISIS and ASP software used are freely available; SOCET SET, is a commercial product. By the end of 2017 we expect to have ported our SOCET SET HRSC sensor model to the Community Sensor Model (CSM; Community Sensor Model Working Group 2010; Hare and Kirk 2017) standard utilized by the successor photogrammetric system SOCET GXP that is currently offered by BAE. Tropical forests exchange more C, energy, and water with the atmosphere than any other class of land ecosystems. Further, tropical-forest C cycling is likely responding to the rapid global warming, intensifying water stress, and increasing atmospheric CO2 levels. Projections of the future C balance of the tropics vary widely among global models. A current effort of the modeling community, the ILAMB (International Land Model Benchmarking) project, is to compile robust observations that can be used to improve the accuracy and realism of the land models for all major biomes. Our goal with this paper is to identify field observations of tropical-forest ecosystem C stocks and fluxes, and of their long-term trends and climatic and CO2 sensitivities, that can serve this effort. We propose criteria for reference-level field data from this biome and present a set of documented examples from old-growth lowland tropical forests. Assessment of injury to natural resources resulting from an oil spill and development and implementation of a plan for the restoration, rehabilitation, replacement or acquisition of natural resources to compensate for those injuries is accomplished through the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process. The NRDA process began within a week of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which occurred on April 20, 2010. During the spill, more than 8500 dead and impaired birds representing at least 93 avian species were collected. In addition, there were more than 3500 birds observed to be visibly oiled. While information in the literature at the time helped to identify some of the effects of oil on birds, it was not sufficient to fully characterize the nature and extent of the injuries to the thousands of live oiled birds, or to quantify those injuries in terms of effects on bird viability. As a result, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed various assessment activities to inform NRDA injury determination and quantification analyses associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, including avian toxicity studies. The goal of these studies was to evaluate the effects of oral exposure to 1–20 ml of artificially weathered Mississippi Canyon 252 oil kg bw-1 day-1 from one to 28 days or one to five applications of oil to 20% of the bird's surface area. It was thought that these exposure levels would not result in immediate or short-term mortality but might result in physiological effects that ultimately could affect avian survival, reproduction and health. These studies included oral dosing studies, an external dosing study, metabolic and flight performance studies and field-based flight studies. Results of these studies indicated changes in hematologic endpoints including formation of Heinz bodies and changes in cell counts. There were also effects on multiple organ systems, cardiac function and oxidative status. External oiling affected flight patterns and time spent during flight tasks indicating that migration may be affected by short-term repeated exposure to oil. Feather damage also resulted in increased heat loss and energetic demands. The papers in this special issue indicate that the combined effects of oil toxicity and feather effects in avian species, even in the case of relatively light oiling, can significantly affect the overall health of birds.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.ecoenv.2017.05.014","usgsCitation":"Bursian, S.J., Alexander, C.R., Cacela, D., Cunningham, F.L., Dean, K.M., Dorr, B.S., Ellis, C.K., Godard-Codding, C.A., Guglielmo, C.G., Hanson-Dorr, K.C., Harr, K.E., Healy, K.A., Hooper, M.J., Horak, K.E., Isanhart, J.P., Kennedy, L.V., Link, J.E., Maggini, I., Moye, J.K., Perez, C.R., Pritsos, C.A., Shriner, S.A., Trust, K.A., and Tuttle, P.L., 2017, Overview of avian toxicity studies for the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resource Damage Assessment: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, v. 146, p. 4-10, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecoenv.2017.05.014.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"4","endPage":"10","ipdsId":"IP-078708","costCenters":[{"id":192,"text":"Columbia Environmental Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":351360,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"146","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a7d6fffe4b00f54eb2441cc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bursian, Steven J.","contributorId":170027,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bursian","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":727164,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Alexander, C. An earthquake early warning system, ShakeAlert, is providing alerts to beta end users in the western United States, specifically California, Oregon, and Washington. An essential aspect of the earthquake early warning system is the development of a framework to test modifications to code to ensure functionality and assess performance. In 2016, a Testing and Certification Platform (TCP) was included in the development of the Production Prototype version of ShakeAlert. The purpose of the TCP is to evaluate the robustness of candidate code that is proposed for deployment on ShakeAlert Production Prototype servers. TCP consists of two main components: a real‐time in situ test that replicates the real‐time production system and an offline playback system to replay test suites. The real‐time tests of system performance assess code optimization and stability. The offline tests comprise a stress test of candidate code to assess if the code is production ready. The test suite includes over 120 events including local, regional, and teleseismic historic earthquakes, recentering and calibration events, and other anomalous and potentially problematic signals. Two assessments of alert performance are conducted. First, point‐source assessments are undertaken to compare magnitude, epicentral location, and origin time with the Advanced National Seismic System Comprehensive Catalog, as well as to evaluate alert latency. Second, we describe assessment of the quality of ground‐motion predictions at end‐user sites by comparing predicted shaking intensities to ShakeMaps for historic events and implement a threshold‐based approach that assesses how often end users initiate the appropriate action, based on their ground‐shaking threshold. TCP has been developed to be a convenient streamlined procedure for objectively testing algorithms, and it has been designed with flexibility to accommodate significant changes in development of new or modified system code. It is expected that the TCP will continue to evolve along with the ShakeAlert system, and the framework we describe here provides one example of how earthquake early warning systems can be evaluated.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0220170138","usgsCitation":"Cochran, E.S., Kohler, M.D., Given, D.D., Guiwits, S., Andrews, Since 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey has been working in collaboration with several partners to develop EEW for the United States. The goal is to create and operate an EEW system, called ShakeAlert, for the highest risk areas of the United States, starting with the West Coast states of California, Oregon, and Washington. In early 2016, the Production Prototype v.1.0 was established for California; then, in early 2017, v.1.2 was established for the West Coast, with earthquake notifications being distributed to a group of beta users in California, Oregon, and Washington. The new ShakeAlert Production Prototype was an outgrowth from an earlier demonstration EEW system that began sending test notifications to selected users in California in January 2012. ShakeAlert leverages the considerable physical, technical, and organizational earthquake monitoring infrastructure of the Advanced National Seismic System, a nationwide federation of cooperating seismic networks. When fully implemented, the ShakeAlert system may reduce damage and injury caused by large earthquakes, improve the nation’s resilience, and speed recovery.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0220170140","usgsCitation":"Kohler, M.D., Cochran, E.S., Given, D.D., Guiwits, S., Neuhauser, We show that sustained, nutrient rich, lower pH submarine groundwater discharging onto nearshore coral reefs off west Maui lowers the pH of seawater and exposes corals to nitrate concentrations 50 times higher than ambient. Rates of coral calcification are substantially decreased, and rates of bioerosion are orders of magnitude higher than those observed in coral cores collected in the Pacific under equivalent low pH conditions but living in oligotrophic waters. Heavier coral nitrogen isotope (δ15N) values pinpoint not only site-specific eutrophication, but also a sewage nitrogen source enriched in 15N. Our results show that eutrophication of reef seawater by land-based sources of pollution can magnify the effects of OA through nutrient driven-bioerosion. These conditions could contribute to the collapse of coastal coral reef ecosystems sooner than current projections predict based only on ocean acidification.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/2017JC013264","usgsCitation":"Prouty, N.G., Anne Cohen, Yates, K.K., Storlazzi, C.D., Swarzenski, P.W., and White, D., 2017, Vulnerability of coral reefs to bioerosion from land-based sources of pollution: Journal of Geophysical Research C: Oceans, v. 122, no. 12, p. 9319-9331, https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JC013264.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"9319","endPage":"9331","ipdsId":"IP-083486","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":488732,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2017jc013264","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":349902,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Maui","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156.6944,\n              20.9361\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.6889,\n              20.9361\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.6889,\n              20.9472\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.6944,\n              20.9472\n            ],\n            [\n              -156.6944,\n              20.9361\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"122","issue":"12","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60faf9e4b06e28e9c22a67","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prouty, Nancy G. 0000-0002-8922-0688 nprouty@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8922-0688","contributorId":3350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prouty","given":"Nancy","email":"nprouty@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":711059,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anne Cohen","contributorId":191409,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Anne Cohen","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":711060,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Yates, Kimberly K. 0000-0001-8764-0358 kyates@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8764-0358","contributorId":420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yates","given":"Kimberly","email":"kyates@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":711061,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Storlazzi, Curt D. 0000-0001-8057-4490 cstorlazzi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8057-4490","contributorId":140584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Storlazzi","given":"Curt","email":"cstorlazzi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":711062,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Swarzenski, Peter W. 0000-0003-0116-0578 pswarzen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0116-0578","contributorId":1070,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swarzenski","given":"Peter","email":"pswarzen@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":711063,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"White, Darla","contributorId":194122,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"White","given":"Darla","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":711064,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}
