These are not mirror-sweep scanning devices such as the multispectral scanner (MSS) sensors that have also been carried aboard the Landsat satellites. The vidicons operate more like common television cameras, using an electron gun to read images from a photoconductive faceplate.</p><p>In the case of Landsats 1 and 2, the RBV system consisted of three such vidicons which collected remote sensing data in three distinct spectral bands. Landsat 3, however, utilizes just two vidicon cameras, both of which sense data in a single broad band. The Landsat 3 RBV system additionally has a unique configuration. As arranged, the two cameras can be shuttered alternately, twice each, in the same time it takes for one MSS scene to be acquired. This shuttering sequence results in four RBV \"subscenes\" for every MSS scene acquired, similar to the four quadrants of a square. See Figure 1. </p><p>Each subscene represents a ground area of approximately 98 by 98 km. The subscenes are designated A, B, C, and D, for the northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast quarters of the full scene, respectively. RBV data products are normally ordered, reproduced, and sold on a subscene basis and are in general referred to in this way. </p><p>Each exposure from the RBV camera system presents an image which is 98 km on a side. When these analog video data are subsequently converted to digital form, the picture element, or pixel, that results is 19 m on a side with an effective resolution element of 30 m. This pixel size is substantially smaller than that obtainable in MSS images (the MSS has an effective resolution element of 73.4 m), and, when RBV images are compared to equivalent MSS images, better resolution in the RBV data is clearly evident. It is for this reason that the RBV system can be a valuable tool for remote sensing of earth resources.</p><p>Until recently, RBV imagery was processed directly from wideband video tape data onto 70-mm film. This changed in September 1980 when digital production of RBV data at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) began. The wideband video tape data are now subjected to analog-to-digital preprocessing and corrected both radiometrically and geometrically to produce high-density digital tapes (HDT's). The HDT data are subsequently transmitted via satellite (Domsat) to the EROS Data Center (EDC) where they are used to generate 241-mm photographic images at a scale of 1:500,000. In Alaska, State jurisdiction extends for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastline. The OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the State boundary, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns. The objectives of the study are to: (1) Determine premining hydrologic conditions in small representative drainage basins and provide historical data with which to compare the magnitude of changes resulting from mining, and (2) develop the capability of making reasonably accurate projections of hydrologic effects resulting from the various land-use changes caused by surface mining. Data collection has been underway since October 1976 for the West Branch Antelope Creek study area in western North Dakota and since March 1978 for the Hay Creek study area in eastern Montana. Data collected during the premining period are being analyzed using statistical methods for the evaluation of the premining conditions. GYRE, September 18-25, 1980 [GYRE 80-9, leg 1]). The data were collected by use of the Sea Mark I mid-range sidescan-sonar system designed by International Submarine Technology, Ltd. (IST). This system surveys a swath having a width of approximately 2-1/2 km on each side of the deep-towed fish. Transducers were towed about 300 m above the bottom on a neutrally bouyant vehicle at a speed of 1-1/2 to 2 knots. Transducers were pulsed at 4-second intervals at a frequency of 27 kHz on one side and 30 kHz on the other. Data recorded on seven EPC recorders aboard ship included slant-range corrected port channel, starboard channel, and port and starboard channels; uncorrected port channel, starboard channel, and port and starboard channels, and a 3.5-kHz tuned-transducer record of the bottom. Fish height or the altitude above the bottom was recorded on a strip-chart recorder. Distance of the fish from the ship (slant range) was recorded by use of a sled-mounted 4.5-kHz transducer.</p><p>Data recorded on sonograms lagged the 3.5-kHz tuned-transducer record and ship navigational fix by as much as 1 hour (2 km) owing to tow-cable length (up to 5 km). Navigation of the ship was by Loran-C at a 5-minute fix interval, supplemented by satellite fixes.</p><p>Data are of excellent quality and bottom features several meters high and about 6-12 m wide can be identified. Figures 1 and 2 show the location of track lines in the Manteo (NI 18-2) quadrangle just east of Cape Hatteras where the upper slope within proposed lease tract areas was surveyed. A t Brandon Road Dam, streamflow is regulated by the operation of tainter gates and headgates. Tainter gates are operated to regulate streamflow at the Dresden Island, Marseilles, and Starved Rock Dams. Peoria Dam and La Grange Dam comprise timber-Chanoine wickets, which are lowered to a horizontal position on the streambed when not used for streamflow regulation. Both dams have concrete abutments housing butterfly valves that are also used for regulation.</p><p>Discharge coefficients, in equations that express discharge as a function of tailwater depth, headwater depth, and vertical height of gate opening, were determined for conditions of free-orifice, submerged-orifice, and free-weir flow under a tainter gate. A free-orifice flow coefficient was determined for the headgates at Brandon Road Dam. Stage-discharge relations for flow over sections of lowered wickets and flow between raised wickets had been developed from hydraulic model studies by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1937 and 1938. These relations were verified by discharge measurements at V.S. Geological Survey stream-gaging stations on the Illinois River near the Peoria and La Grange Dams. Discharge coefficients in equations of free-orifice and submerged-orifice flow through a butterfly valve were computed from additional measurements at the stream-gaging stations.</p><p>A total of 50 measurements of discharge that ranged from 1,730 to 86,400 cubic feet per second were used to develop stage-discharge relations at the six dams. The computed relations compared favorably with published hydraulic design criteria. The stage-discharge relations derived from tainter gate control are applicable to all conditions except extremely high streamflow conditions when submerged weir flow exists. The stage-discharge relations for wicket control are applicable to flow over no more than 20 lowered wickets. For the November 1978 study the tracer was injected at two locations, Surrey Street in Lafayette and about 7 miles downstream at State Highway 3073; the discharge at Surrey Street at the time of injection was 218 cubic feet per second. The two dye clouds merged at Broussard Cemetery, about 12.2 miles downstream from Surrey Street, after an elapsed time of about 270 hours. After 438 hours the dye cloud extended form the Abbeville bridge (Louisiana Highway 14 Bypass) upstream about 14.5 miles. In June 1979, a tracer was injected into the river at Surrey Street at Lafayette; the discharge at Surrey Street at the time of injection was 161 cubic feet per second. Forty-two hours after injection the leading edge of the tracer was located at the Milton pumping plant, 14 miles downstream from the injection site. The average pumping rate of the plant during the study was 440 cubic feet per second. Discrete radon samples are being collected weekly from nine stations in the Southern Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ) and two stations in the Northern Iceland-Tjornes Fracture Zone (TFZ) to determine the potential for earthquake prediction. We also monitor volume ratio of gas to water, wellhead temperature and chloride content of the water to enable us to constrain the possible mechanism involved in radon anomalies.</p><p>We report a possible strain event in April that caused both changes in radon emission and a small earthquake swarm. An eruption at Hekla in August was not preceded by any distinctive radon anomalies. Swarm activity occurring close to Selfoss and Oxnalaekur appeared to be associated with possible low amplitude (&lt;30%) precursory radon anomalies in April and October.</p><p>We present the first data from our ALOKA-continuous radon meter at Fludir. The data show no anomalies and no earthquakes have been reported.</p><p>Chloride and radon data from Bakki and Dalvik indicate that an inverse correlation exist between them at longer periods. Therefore, we feel that in the case of a large earthquake the chloride data could tell us something about the mechanism of radon anomalies.</p><p>During 1980 three major eruptions and two subsurface migration events occurred at Krafla, north Iceland. These rocks have been folded to form the Panther Mountain syncline on the south and the Kinta anticline on the north. Alluvium along streams is less than 15 feet thick and consists mainly of sandy silt. Water in bedrock is under artesian conditions. Well depths range from 11 to 213 feet and average 75 feet. In 86% of the wells measured, the water level was less than 30 feet below the land surface. Because the rocks have minimal permeability, well yields probably are less than 5 gallons per minute. Ground water is commonly a mixed cation bicarbonate type with dissolved solids ranging from about 300 to 2,000 milligrams per liter. No relationship between water chemistry and well depth or geographic distribution is apparent. Streams in the area are ephemeral and there are extended periods of no flow. Blue Creek was dry 30% of the time during 1976-80 and had flows of less than 0.1 cubic foot per second for at least 80 consecutive days. Stream water is generally a mixed cation sulfate type. The maximum dissolved-solids concentration determined in stream water was 3670 milligrams per liter. Maximum suspended sediment discharge, in tons per day, was about 235 for Blue Creek, 40 for Blue Creek tributary, and 630 for Mathuldy Creek. Silt-clay particles (diameters less than 0.062 millimeter) are the dominant sediment size. Surface mining for coal undoubtedly will have some effect on the environment. The most likely deleterious effects are increased sediment loads in streams and increased mineralization of stream waters. However, these effects should be of only limited extent and duration if appropriate mining and reclamation practices are followed. Rocks comprising the aquifer were deposited in a near-shore environment ranging from marine on the west to nonmarine to the east. Because of changes in depositional environments with time and from place to place, the aquifer is a complex sequence of fine to very fine grained sandstone, siltstone, shale, and conglomerate, with interbedded very thin limestone. Aggregate thicknesses of water-bearing sandstones are greatest south of the Cimarron River where they reach a maximum of 550 feet in the vicinity of Seminole. In the Gulf of Mexico, State jurisdiction extends for 3 leagues (9 nautical miles or 16.68 km) off the coast of Texas and the western coast of Florida and for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastlines of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The Gulf of Mexico OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas State boundaries, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns.
