Numerical modeling scenarios are evaluated that consider non-isothermal hydrologic responses to variable forcing from different lake depths and for different hydrologic gradients. A novel physical property relationship connects the dynamic distribution of electrical resistivity to ice saturation and temperature outputs from the SUTRA groundwater simulator with freeze–thaw physics. The influence of lithology on electrical resistivity is controlled by a surface conduction term in the physical property relationship. Resistivity models, which reflect changes in subsurface conditions, are used as inputs to simulate AEM data in order to explore the sensitivity of geophysical observations to permafrost thaw. Simulations of sublacustrine talik formation over a 1000-year period are modeled after conditions found in the Yukon Flats, Alaska. Synthetic AEM data are analyzed with a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm that quantifies geophysical parameter uncertainty and resolution. Major lithological and permafrost features are well resolved by AEM data in the examples considered. The subtle geometry of partial ice saturation beneath lakes during talik formation cannot be resolved using AEM data, but the gross characteristics of sub-lake resistivity models reflect bulk changes in ice content and can identify the presence of a talik. A final synthetic example compares AEM and ground-based electromagnetic responses for their ability to resolve shallow permafrost and thaw features in the upper 1–2 m below ground outside the lake margin.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"European Geosciences Union","doi":"10.5194/tc-9-781-2015","usgsCitation":"Minsley, B.J., Wellman, T., Walvoord, M.A., and Revil, A., 2014, Sensitivity of airborne geophysical data to sublacustrine and near-surface permafrost thaw: The Cryosphere, v. 9, p. 781-794, https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-9-781-2015.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"781","endPage":"794","ipdsId":"IP-059164","costCenters":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472874,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-9-781-2015","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":343171,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-04-27","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"595611c1e4b0d1f9f05067a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Minsley, Burke J. 0000-0003-1689-1306 bminsley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1689-1306","contributorId":697,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Minsley","given":"Burke","email":"bminsley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":702876,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wellman, Tristan 0000-0003-3049-6214 twellman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3049-6214","contributorId":2166,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wellman","given":"Tristan","email":"twellman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":191,"text":"Colorado Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":702877,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Walvoord, Michelle Ann 0000-0003-4269-8366 walvoord@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4269-8366","contributorId":147211,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Walvoord","given":"Michelle","email":"walvoord@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"Ann","affiliations":[{"id":5044,"text":"National Research Program - Central Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":702878,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Revil, Andre","contributorId":194008,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Revil","given":"Andre","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":702879,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane moved into its present position during the Mesozoic; its Mesozoic and older movements are central to reconstruction of Arctic tectonic history. Accurate representation of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane in reconstructions of Late Proterozoic and early Paleozoic paleogeography is hampered by the paucity of information available. Most of the Late Proterozoic to Paleozoic rocks in the Alaska–Chukotka terrane were penetratively deformed and recrystallized during the Mesozoic deformational events; primary features and relationships have been obliterated, and age control is sparse. </p><p>We use a variety of geochemical, geochronologic, paleontologic, and geologic tools to read through penetrative deformation and reconstruct the protolith sequence of part of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane, the Nome Complex. We confirm that the protoliths of the Nome Complex were part of the same Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin as weakly deformed rocks in the southern and central part&nbsp;of the terrane, the Brooks Range. We show that the protoliths of the Nome Complex represent a carbonate platform (and related rocks) that underwent incipient rifting, probably during the Ordovician, and that the carbonate platform was overrun by an influx of siliciclastic detritus during the Devonian. During early phases of the transition to siliciclastic deposition, restricted basins formed that were the site of sedimentary exhalative base-metal sulfide deposition. We integrate new and existing seismic reflection profiles to provide new constraints on the Baranof Fan area, geometry, volume, and channel development. We estimate the fan&rsquo;s area and total sediment volume to be &sim;323,000 km</span><sup>2</sup><span>&nbsp;and &sim;301,000 km</span><sup>3</sup><span>, respectively, making it among the largest deep-sea fans in the world. We show that the Baranof Fan consists of channel-levee deposits from at least three distinct aggradational channel systems: the currently active Horizon and Mukluk channels, and the waning system we call the Baranof channel. The oldest sedimentary deposits are in the northern fan, and the youngest deposits at the fan&rsquo;s southern extent; in addition, the channels seem to avulse southward consistently through time. We suggest that Baranof Fan sediment is sourced from the Coast Mountains in southeastern Alaska, transported offshore most recently via fjord to glacial sea valley conduits. Because of the translation of the Pacific plate northwest past sediment sources on the North American plate along the Queen Charlotte strike-slip fault, we suggest that new channel formation, channel beheadings, and southward-migrating channel avulsions have been influenced by regional tectonics. The goals of the study were to (1) examine the distribution of Hg in select lakes of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve; (2) evaluate the differences in Hg concentrations among fish species and with fish age and size; and (3) assess the potential ecological risks of Hg to park fishes, wildlife, and human consumers by comparing Hg concentrations to a series of risk benchmarks. Total Hg concentrations ranged from 17.9 to 616.4 nanograms per gram wet weight (ng/g ww), with a mean (± standard error) of 180.0 ±17.9 across the 83 individuals sampled. Without accounting for the effects of size, Hg concentrations varied by a factor of 10.9 across sites and species. After accounting for the effects of size, Hg concentrations were even more variable, differing by a factor of as much as 13.2 within a single species sampled from two lakes. Such inter-site variation suggests that site characteristics play an important role in determining fish Hg concentrations and that more intensive sampling may be necessary to adequately characterize Hg contamination in the park. Size-normalized Hg concentrations also differed among three species sampled from Tanada Lake, and Hg concentrations were strongly correlated with age. Furthermore, potential risks to park fish, wildlife, and human users were variable across lakes and species. Although no fish from two of the lakes studied (Grizzly Lake and Summit Lake) had Hg concentrations exceeding any of the benchmarks used, concentrations in Copper Lake and Tanada Lake exceeded conservative benchmarks for bird (90 ng/g ww in whole-body) and human (150 ng/g ww in muscle) consumption. In Tanada Lake, concentrations in most fishes also exceeded benchmarks for risk to moderate- and low-sensitivity avian consumers (180 and 270 ng/g ww in whole-body, respectively), as well as the concentration at which Alaska State guidelines suggest at-risk groups limit fish consumption to 3 meals per week (320 ng/g). However, the relationship between Hg concentrations and fish size in Tanada Lake suggests that consumption of smaller-sized fishes could reduce Hg exposure in human consumers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20141145","collaboration":"Report prepared for Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve","usgsCitation":"Kowalski, B.M., Willacker, J.J., Zimmerman, C.E., and Eagles-Smith, C.A., 2014, Mercury in fishes from Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2014-1145, vi, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20141145.","productDescription":"vi, 26 p.","numberOfPages":"36","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-056313","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":289828,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr20141145.jpg"},{"id":289825,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2014/1145/"},{"id":289827,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2014/1145/pdf/ofr2014-1145.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Wrangell-st. This region of the Arctic has experienced a warming trend over the past three decades leading to thawing of on-shore permafrost and the disappearance of sea ice at unprecedented rates. The U.S. Geological Survey&rsquo;s (USGS) Changing Arctic Ecosystems (CAE) research initiative was developed to investigate and forecast these rapid changes in the physical environment of the Arctic, and the associated changes to wildlife populations, in order to inform key management decisions by the U.S. Department of the Interior and other agencies. Forecasting future wildlife responses to changes in the Arctic can benefit greatly from historical records that inform what changes have already occurred. Several Arctic wildlife and plant species have already responded to climatic and physical changes to the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska. Thus, we located historical aerial imagery to improve our understanding of recent habitat changes and the associated response to such changes by wildlife populations.</p>\n<p>In this report, we describe and make available a set of 61 georectified aerial images of the Arctic Coastal Plain (taken from 1948 to 2010) that were obtained by the USGS to inform research objectives of the USGS CAE Initiative. Here, we describe the origins, metadata, and public availability of these images that were obtained within four main study areas on the Arctic Coastal Plain: Teshekpuk Lake Special Area, Chipp River, the Colville River Delta, and locations along the Dalton Highway Corridor between the Brooks Range and Deadhorse. We also provide general descriptions of observable changes to the geomorphology of landscapes that are apparent by comparing historical and contemporary images. These landscape changes include altered river corridors, lake drying, coastal erosion, and new vegetation communities. All original and georectified images and metadata are available through the USGS Alaska Science Center Portal (search under &lsquo;Project Name&rsquo; using title of this report) or by contacting&nbsp;<i>ascweb@usgs.gov</i>.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20141140","collaboration":"USGS Science to Support the USGS Changing Arctic Ecosystems Initiative","usgsCitation":"Tape, K., Pearce, J.M., Walworth, D.H., Meixell, B.W., Fondell, T.F., Gustine, D.D., Flint, P.L., Hupp, J.W., Schmutz, J.A., and Ward, D.H., 2014, Historical and contemporary imagery to assess ecosystem change on the Arctic coastal plain of northern Alaska (Version 1: Originally posted July 11, 2014; I review the tectonic history of range growth across the plateau margin north of the Kunlun fault (35°–40°N) and east of the Qaidam basin (98°–107°E), synthesizing records from fault-bounded mountain ranges and adjacent sedimentary basins. Deformation began in Eocene time shortly after India-Asia collision, but the northeastern orogen boundary has largely remained stationary since this time. Widespread middle Miocene–Holocene range growth is portrayed by accelerated deformation, uplift, erosion, and deposition across northeastern Tibet. The extent of deformation, however, only expanded ~150 km outward to the north and east and ~150 km laterally to the west. A middle Miocene reorganization of deformation characterized by shortening at various orientations heralds the onset of the modern kinematic regime where shortening is coupled to strike slip. We evaluated high resolution satellite imagery as a tool to track the distribution and abundance of polar bears. We examined satellite images of a small island in Foxe Basin, Canada, occupied by a high density of bears during the summer ice-free season. Bears were distinguished from other light-colored spots by comparing images collected on different dates. A sample of ground-truthed points demonstrated that we accurately classified bears. Independent observers reviewed images and a population estimate was obtained using mark- recapture models. This estimate (N: 94; 95% Confidence Interval: 92-105) was remarkably similar to an abundance estimate derived from a line transect aerial survey conducted a few days earlier (N: 102; 95% CI: 69-152). Our findings suggest that satellite imagery is a promising tool for monitoring polar bears on land, with implications for use with other Arctic wildlife. Large scale applications may require development of automated detection processes to expedite review and analysis. Future research should assess the utility of multi-spectral imagery and examine sites with different environmental characteristics.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Public Library of Science","publisherLocation":"San Francisco, CA","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0101513","usgsCitation":"Stapleton, S.P., LaRue, M.A., Lecomte, N., Atkinson, S.N., Garshelis, D., Porter, C., and Atwood, T.C., 2014, Polar bears from space: Assessing satellite imagery as a tool to track Arctic wildlife: PLoS ONE, v. 9, p. 1-7, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0101513.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"7","numberOfPages":"7","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-051002","costCenters":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472882,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0101513","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":296917,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0101513"},{"id":296919,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"54dd2c27e4b08de9379b366a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stapleton, Seth P. sstapleton@usgs.gov","contributorId":3979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stapleton","given":"Seth","email":"sstapleton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":537334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"LaRue, Michelle A.","contributorId":20634,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaRue","given":"Michelle","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537348,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lecomte, Nicolas","contributorId":131119,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lecomte","given":"Nicolas","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537349,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Atkinson, Stephen N.","contributorId":12365,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Atkinson","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537350,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Garshelis, David L.","contributorId":89457,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garshelis","given":"David L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537351,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Porter, Claire","contributorId":131120,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Porter","given":"Claire","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":537352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Atwood, Todd C. 0000-0002-1971-3110 tatwood@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1971-3110","contributorId":4368,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Atwood","given":"Todd","email":"tatwood@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":537335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

A transforming wildfire regime is altering plant composition and successional patterns, thus affecting the distribution and potentially the abundance of large herbivores. Caribou (<i>Rangifer tarandus</i>) are an important subsistence resource for communities throughout the north and a species that depends on terrestrial lichen in late-successional forests and tundra systems. Projected increases in area burned and reductions in stand ages may reduce lichen availability within caribou winter ranges. Sufficient reductions in lichen abundance could alter the capacity of these areas to support caribou populations. To assess the potential role of a changing fire regime on winter habitat for caribou, we used a simulation modeling platform, two global circulation models (GCMs), and a moderate emissions scenario to project annual fire characteristics and the resulting abundance of lichen-producing vegetation types (i.e., spruce forests and tundra >60 years old) across a modeling domain that encompassed the winter ranges of the Central Arctic and Porcupine caribou herds in the Alaskan-Yukon Arctic. Fires were less numerous and smaller in tundra compared to spruce habitats throughout the 90-year projection for both GCMs. Given the more likely climate trajectory, we projected that the Porcupine caribou herd, which winters primarily in the boreal forest, could be expected to experience a greater reduction in lichen-producing winter habitats (−21%) than the Central Arctic herd that wintered primarily in the arctic tundra (−11%). Our results suggest that caribou herds wintering in boreal forest will undergo fire-driven reductions in lichen-producing habitats that will, at a minimum, alter their distribution. Range shifts of caribou resulting from fire-driven changes to winter habitat may diminish access to caribou for rural communities that reside in fire-prone areas.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"PLoS ONE","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Public Library of Science","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0100588","usgsCitation":"Gustine, D.D., Brinkman, T.J., Lindgren, M.A., Schmidt, J.I., Rupp, T., and Adams, L., 2014, Climate-driven effects of fire on winter habitat for caribou in the Alaskan-Yukon Arctic: PLoS ONE, v. 9, no. 7, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0100588.","productDescription":"11 p.","numberOfPages":"11","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-052662","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472889,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0100588","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":291042,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":291037,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0100588"}],"country":"Canada;United States","state":"Alaska;Yukon","otherGeospatial":"Alaskan-yukon Arctic","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -151.56,63.83 ], [ -151.56,70.59 ], [ -133.51,70.59 ], [ -133.51,63.83 ], [ -151.56,63.83 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"9","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-07-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57f7f0bbe4b0bc0bec09f954","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gustine, David D. dgustine@usgs.gov","contributorId":3776,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gustine","given":"David","email":"dgustine@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":496353,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brinkman, Todd J.","contributorId":39696,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brinkman","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":496356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lindgren, Michael A.","contributorId":33237,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindgren","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":496355,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Schmidt, Jennifer I.","contributorId":98656,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Jennifer","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":496357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Rupp, T. Protoliths of the mafic rocks include basalt and mafic clastic rocks, which were interlayered with calcareous, pelitic, and feldspathic sediments, and gabbro and diabase, likely feeder dikes and sills to the basalt. Major-element, trace-element, and rare-earth element (REE) analyses of these mafic rocks, together with analyses of Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopes, form two compositional groups. The two groups differ in Nb/Y (one plots as basalt, the other as alkali to subalkali basalt), TiO<sub>2</sub>, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>, and Nb (and other elements). The high-Ti group is characterized by enrichment of light REE; the low-Ti group lacks such enrichment. The trace-element and isotopic characteristics of the two groups resemble typical non-arc magmas derived from the mantle: the low-Ti group has compositions between normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) and enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB), while those of the high-Ti group are between E-MORB and ocean-island basalt (OIB). The two groups have overlapping positive values of ε<sub>Nd</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>(+0.34 to +7.40). TiO<sub>2</sub>/Yb ratios suggest the high-Ti group formed from melts generated under normal thickness of continental crust, while the low-Ti group formed from melts generated at shallower conditions, presumably after rift-related crustal thinning had progressed.</p><p>Geologic, paleontologic, and geochronologic characteristics of the Nome Complex support an origin along the NE margin of Baltica. The rift-related magmatism in the Nome Complex likely occurred during the opening of the Uralian ocean along that margin; by implication, related parts of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane may have experienced a similar origin.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Reconstruction of a Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin sequence, northern Alaska, its paleogeographic significance, and contained base-metal sulfide deposits","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/2014.2506(05)","usgsCitation":"Ayuso, R.A., and Till, A., 2014, Geochemical and Nd-Sr-Pb isotopic evolution of metabasites from rifting of continental lithosphere, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, and implications for paleogeographic reconstruction, chap. <i>of</i> Reconstruction of a Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin sequence, northern Alaska, its paleogeographic significance, and contained base-metal sulfide deposits, p. 133-172, https://doi.org/10.1130/2014.2506(05).","productDescription":"40 p.","startPage":"133","endPage":"172","ipdsId":"IP-054555","costCenters":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":382467,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Seward Peninsula","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -168.662109375,\n              64.18724867664994\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.6533203125,\n              64.18724867664994\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.6533203125,\n              66.69213122233872\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.662109375,\n              66.69213122233872\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.662109375,\n              64.18724867664994\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ayuso, Robert A. 0000-0002-8496-9534 rayuso@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8496-9534","contributorId":2654,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ayuso","given":"Robert","email":"rayuso@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":808664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Till, Alison 0000-0002-6640-6877","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6640-6877","contributorId":247882,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Till","given":"Alison","affiliations":[{"id":12545,"text":"USGS retired","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":808665,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

However, the same thermokarst lakes can also sequester carbon<sup>5</sup>, and it remains uncertain whether carbon uptake by thermokarst lakes can offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Here we use field observations of Siberian permafrost exposures, radiocarbon dating and spatial analyses to quantify Holocene carbon stocks and fluxes in lake sediments overlying thawed Pleistocene-aged permafrost. We find that carbon accumulation in deep thermokarst-lake sediments since the last deglaciation is about 1.6 times larger than the mass of Pleistocene-aged permafrost carbon released as greenhouse gases when the lakes first formed. Although methane and carbon dioxide emissions following thaw lead to immediate radiative warming, carbon uptake in peat-rich sediments occurs over millennial timescales. We assess thermokarst-lake carbon feedbacks to climate with an atmospheric perturbation model and find that thermokarst basins switched from a net radiative warming to a net cooling climate effect about 5,000</span><span class=\"mb\"><span class=\"mb\">&thinsp;</span></span><span>years ago. High rates of Holocene carbon accumulation in 20 lake sediments (47&plusmn;10 grams of carbon per square metre per year; mean&plusmn;standard error) were driven by thermokarst erosion and deposition of terrestrial organic matter, by nutrient release from thawing permafrost that stimulated lake productivity and by slow decomposition in cold, anoxic lake bottoms. When lakes eventually drained, permafrost formation rapidly sequestered sediment carbon. Our estimate of about 160petagrams of Holocene organic carbon in deep lake basins of Siberia and Alaska increases the circumpolar peat carbon pool estimate for permafrost regions by over 50 per cent (ref. 6). New U-Pb magmatic, detrital zircon, and <sup>40</sup>Ar/<sup>39</sup>Ar ages constrained by detailed field mapping, global nannoplankton zones, and magnetic polarities allow correlation of the volcanics with the 2012 geologic time scale. The data show that Siletzia was rapidly erupted 56–49 Ma, during the Chron 25–22 plate reorganization in the northeast Pacific basin. Accretion was completed between 51 and 49 Ma in Oregon, based on CP11 (CP—Coccolith Paleogene zone) coccoliths in strata overlying onlapping continental sediments. Magmatism continued in the northern Oregon Coast Range until ca. 46 Ma with the emplacement of a regional sill complex during or shortly after accretion. Isotopic signatures similar to early Columbia River basalts, the great crustal thickness of Siletzia in Oregon, rapid eruption, and timing of accretion are consistent with offshore formation as an oceanic plateau. Approximately 8 m.y. after accretion, margin parallel extension of the forearc, emplacement of regional dike swarms, and renewed magmatism of the Tillamook episode peaked at 41.6 Ma (CP zone 14a; Chron 19r). We examine the origin of Siletzia and consider the possible role of a long-lived Yellowstone hotspot using the reconstruction in GPlates, an open source plate model. In most hotspot reference frames, the Yellowstone hotspot (YHS) is on or near an inferred northeast-striking Kula-Farallon and/or Resurrection-Farallon ridge between 60 and 50 Ma. In this configuration, the YHS could have provided a 56–49 Ma source on the Farallon plate for Siletzia, which accreted to North America by 50 Ma. A sister plateau, the Eocene basalt basement of the Yakutat terrane, now in Alaska, formed contemporaneously on the adjacent Kula (or Resurrection) plate and accreted to coastal British Columbia at about the same time. Following accretion of Siletzia, the leading edge of North America overrode the YHS ca. 42 Ma. The voluminous high-Ti basaltic to alkalic magmatism of the 42–35 Ma Tillamook episode and extension in the forearc may be related to the encounter with an active YHS. Clockwise rotation of western Oregon about a pole in the backarc has since moved the Tillamook center and underlying Siletzia northward ∼250 km from the probable hotspot track on North America. In the reference frames we examined, the YHS arrives in the backarc ∼5 m.y. too early to match the 17 Ma magmatic flare-up commonly attributed to the YHS. We suggest that interaction with the subducting slab may have delayed arrival of the plume beneath the backarc.","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/GES01018.1","usgsCitation":"Wells, R., Bukry, D., Friedman, R., Pyle, D., Duncan, R., Haeussler, P.J., and Wooden, J., 2014, Geologic history of Siletzia, a large igneous province in the Oregon and Washington Coast Range: Correlation to the geomagnetic polarity time scale and implications for a long-lived Yellowstone hotspot: Geosphere, v. 10, no. 4, p. 692-719, https://doi.org/10.1130/GES01018.1.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"692","endPage":"719","numberOfPages":"28","ipdsId":"IP-052697","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472904,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1130/ges01018.1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":291674,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada, United States","state":"Oregon, Vancouver, Washington","otherGeospatial":"Siletzia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -158.0,40.0 ], [ -158.0,68.0 ], [ -114.0,68.0 ], [ -114.0,40.0 ], [ -158.0,40.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"10","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53e1efcbe4b0fe532be2de21","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, Ray 0000-0002-7796-0160","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7796-0160","contributorId":71260,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wells","given":"Ray","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495998,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bukry, David 0000-0003-4540-890X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4540-890X","contributorId":30980,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bukry","given":"David","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495995,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Friedman, Richard","contributorId":59363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"Richard","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495997,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Pyle, Douglas","contributorId":56985,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pyle","given":"Douglas","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495996,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Duncan, Robert","contributorId":74688,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duncan","given":"Robert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495999,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Haeussler, Peter J. 0000-0002-1503-6247 pheuslr@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1503-6247","contributorId":503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haeussler","given":"Peter","email":"pheuslr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":496000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Wooden, Joe","contributorId":14313,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wooden","given":"Joe","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495994,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

We used a sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) to date nine samples of Neoproterozoic rock and five samples of Devonian rock from the Brooks Range and Seward Peninsula of Alaska and from the Chukotka Peninsula of northeastern Russia. Felsic magmatism occurred at 968 Ma and 742 Ma in the Brooks Range and at 865 Ma and 670–666 Ma on Seward Peninsula. Felsic igneous rocks in Chukotka were dated at 656 Ma and 574 Ma. Devonian igneous rocks are found throughout the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane, and we dated samples with ages of 391 Ma, 390 Ma, 385 Ma, 371 Ma, and 363 Ma. The felsic character of the Neoproterozoic rocks suggests formation at least in part through crustal melting. The age of the crustal source rocks that melted to form the Neoproterozoic rocks is inferred to be Mesoproterozoic based on Nd model ages ranging from 1.6 to 1.4 Ga. Rocks of this age range have been reported from the basement of Baltica but are rare in Laurentia. The 565 Ma orthogneisses on Seward Peninsula have ca. 1.1 Ga Nd model ages. Devonian igneous rocks have a wide range of model ages ranging from 1.6 to 0.8 Ga. The tectonic setting of the 968 Ma, 865 Ma, and 742 Ma rocks is unknown. The ca. 670 Ma magmatism on Seward Peninsula is interpreted to have occurred in an arc setting based on geochemistry and similarities in their ages to the Avalonian–Cadomian arc system peripheral to Gondwana. Latest Neoproterozoic magmatism is inferred to have occurred in a rift setting based on composition and the Paleozoic passive margin sequence that was deposited across the Arctic Alaska–Chukokta terrane. Devonian magmatism likely occurred in an arc and/or backarc rift setting. Significant uncertainties remain concerning the age of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane basement, particularly the age of the host rocks for Neoproterozoic intrusions.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Reconstruction of a Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin sequence, northern Alaska, its paleogeographic Detrital zircon populations from metamorphosed rift-related mafic volcaniclastic rocks, a lithologic subunit of the Nome Complex, contain a dominant population of 740–550 Ma zircons. Samples from three other lithologic units yielded populations dominated by early Paleozoic zircons and characterized by a large population of 450–420 Ma zircons. A few samples, taken from two different lithologic units, yielded populations dominated by Mesoproterozoic zircons (most around 1.25–0.9 Ga) and lacked zircons younger than 900 Ma. None of the 22 samples contained more than a few Archean zircons.</p><p>The ages of the youngest detrital zircon populations indicate that little of the protolith for the Nome Complex can be as old as Proterozoic, as previously thought. Further, a significant part of the protolith sequence is Devonian or younger; these rocks are likely correlative with Devonian or Mississippian units in the Brooks Range, specifically marine parts of the Endicott or Lisburne Groups.</p><p>Based on detrital zircon data, limiting factors can be placed on the paleogeographic history of the Nome Complex and associated parts of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane: (1) 740–550 Ma zircons were deposited in a rift-related basin formed on a continental margin in the early Paleozoic; at least some of those zircons may have been sourced from local basement; (2) a transition to new sediment sources is reflected in Devonian or younger protoliths with the appearance of 450–420 Ma and 1.25–0.9 Ga detrital zircons; and (3) 450–420 Ma and 1.25–0.9 Ga zircons may have been supplied from sources outside the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka terrane.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Reconstruction of a Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin sequence, northern Alaska, its paleogeographic significance, and contained base-metal sulfide deposits","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/2014.2506(04)","usgsCitation":"Till, A., Amato, J.M., Aleinikoff, J.N., and Bleick, H.A., 2014, U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology as evidence for the origin of the Nome Complex, northern Alaska, and implications for regional and trans-Arctic correlations, chap. <i>of</i> Reconstruction of a Late Proterozoic to Devonian continental margin sequence, northern Alaska, its paleogeographic significance, and contained base-metal sulfide deposits, v. 506, p. 111-131, https://doi.org/10.1130/2014.2506(04).","productDescription":"21 p.","startPage":"111","endPage":"131","ipdsId":"IP-049811","costCenters":[{"id":119,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geology Minerals","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":382322,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Nome Complex","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -167.32177734375,\n              64.29229248039543\n            ],\n            [\n              -143.4375,\n              64.29229248039543\n            ],\n            [\n              -143.4375,\n              68.14703189961982\n            ],\n            [\n              -167.32177734375,\n              68.14703189961982\n            ],\n            [\n              -167.32177734375,\n              64.29229248039543\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"506","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Till, Alison 0000-0002-6640-6877","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6640-6877","contributorId":247882,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Till","given":"Alison","affiliations":[{"id":12545,"text":"USGS retired","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":808563,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Amato, Jeffrey M.","contributorId":247883,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Amato","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":49682,"text":"Dept of Geolgical Sciences, New Mexico State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":808564,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Aleinikoff, John N. 0000-0003-3494-6841 jaleinikoff@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3494-6841","contributorId":1478,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aleinikoff","given":"John","email":"jaleinikoff@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":808565,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bleick, Heather A. hbleick@usgs.gov","contributorId":2484,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bleick","given":"Heather","email":"hbleick@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":808592,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Nome Complex provides key information for understanding deposit genesis and crustal evolution. A total of 106 new analyses of galena (and other sulfi des) and metasedimentary rocks hosting the deposits shows that (1) Pb isotope signatures of the deposits are heterogeneous when considered as a group; (2) the stratabound Nelson deposit, and deformed veins at Quarry and Galena, are isotopically similar; (3) stratabound and locally stratiform lenses such as Wheeler North and Aurora Creek had different isotopic evolutions; and (4) the occurrence at Bluff and the postmetamorphic, undeformed Pb-Zn-Ag veins and replacements at Hannum, Independence, Foster, and Omilak show the highest values of<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>206</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb in the region. Pb isotope data for the stratabound Zn-Pb deposits and occurrences do not lie along similar secondary or anomalous lead evolution lines, and there is no shared, two-stage lead line that would provide intersections with a primary or single-stage lead isotope growth curve.</p><p>Lead isotopic characteristics of the Nelson stratabound deposit and the deformed veins at Quarry and Galena indicate that they largely shared metal and fluid sources. Quarry and Galena also display sufficient Pb isotopic contrast compared to Aurora Creek and Wheeler North to eliminate such veins as subsurface “feeders” for these stratabound deposits, if the deformed veins and deposits formed as closed isotopic systems (without a contribution from externally derived lead). The Pb isotope composition of galena from Aurora Creek formed by a multistage process. It is thus possible that the Aurora Creek deposit originally contained Pb isotope compositions that resembled those from Quarry and Galena. That early-formed Pb was probably remobilized and mixed with radiogenic lead contributed by Mesozoic hydrothermal fluids similar to those associated with the gold-quartz veins in the region. Values of<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>207</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb and<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>206</sup>Pb/<sup>204</sup>Pb from each of the deposits and occurrences plot within the Pb isotope fields of the host metasedimentary rocks and Mesoproterozoic basement rocks of Seward Peninsula; Pb isotope compositions in the deposits thus reflect a local source control.</p><p>The processes that generated the premetamorphic Zn-Pb(-Ag-Au-Ba-F) sulfide deposits in the Nome Complex differed from those that generated Zn-Pb-Ag deposits in the western Brooks Range, such as the giant Red Dog ore body. Given the expense and limited opportunity to procure new grasslands, managers are increasingly focusing on ways to improve existing habitat for grassland birds, using techniques such as tree removal. To examine the potential for tree removal to benefit grassland birds, we conducted 446 point counts on 35 grassland habitat patches in the highly fragmented landscape of west-central Minnesota during 2009–2011. We modeled density of four grassland bird species in relation to habitat composition at multiple scales, focusing on covariates that described grass, woody vegetation (trees and large shrubs), or combinations of grass and woody vegetation. The best-supported models for all four grassland bird species incorporated variables measured at multiple scales, including local features such as grass height, litter depth, and local tree abundance, as well as landscape-level measures of grass and tree cover. Savannah Sparrows (<i>Passerculus sandwichensis</i>), Sedge Wrens (<i>Cistothorus platensis</i>), and Bobolinks (<i>Dolichonyx oryzivorus</i>) responded consistently and negatively to woody vegetation, but response to litter depth, grass height, and grassland extent were mixed among species. Our results suggest that reducing shrub and tree cover is more likely to increase the density of grassland birds than are attempts to improve grass quality or quantity. In particular, tree removal is more likely to increase density of Savannah Sparrows and Sedge Wrens than any reasonable changes in grass quality or quantity. Yet tree removal may not result in increased abundance of grassland birds if habitat composition is not considered at multiple scales. Managers will need to either manage at large scales (80–300 ha) or focus their efforts on removing trees in landscapes that contain some grasslands but few nearby wooded areas.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Condor","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Cooper Ornithological Society","doi":"10.1650/CONDOR-13-072.1","usgsCitation":"Thompson, S.J., Arnold, T.W., and Amundson, C.L., 2014, A multiscale assessment of tree avoidance by prairie birds: The Condor, v. 116, no. 3, p. 303-315, https://doi.org/10.1650/CONDOR-13-072.1.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"303","endPage":"315","numberOfPages":"13","ipdsId":"IP-053994","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472923,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1650/condor-13-072.1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":289089,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":289088,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1650/CONDOR-13-072.1"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -97.24,43.5 ], [ -97.24,49.38 ], [ -89.49,49.38 ], [ -89.49,43.5 ], [ -97.24,43.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"116","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ad32d3e4b0729c1541819a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thompson, Sarah J. 0000-0002-5733-8198 sjthompson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5733-8198","contributorId":5434,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"Sarah","email":"sjthompson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":495389,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Arnold, Todd W.","contributorId":36058,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Arnold","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":12644,"text":"University of Minnesota, St. Paul","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":495390,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Amundson, Courtney L. 0000-0002-0166-7224 camundson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0166-7224","contributorId":4833,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Amundson","given":"Courtney","email":"camundson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":117,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology WTEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":495388,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This study explores the use of the microwave Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique to map and quantify ground surface subsidence caused by the Anaktuvuk River fire on the North Slope of Alaska. We detected an increase of up to 8 cm of thaw-season ground subsidence after the fire, which is due to a combination of thickened active layer and permafrost thaw subsidence. Our results illustrate the effectiveness and potential of using InSAR to quantify fire impacts on the Arctic tundra, especially in regions underlain by ice-rich permafrost. Our study also suggests that surface subsidence is a more comprehensive indicator of fire impacts on ice-rich permafrost terrain than changes in active layer thickness alone.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geophysical Research Letters","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/2014GL060533","usgsCitation":"Liu, L., Jafarov, E.E., Schaefer, K.M., Jones, B.M., Zebker, H.A., Williams, C.A., Rogan, J., and Zhang, T., 2014, InSAR detects increase in surface subsidence caused by an Arctic tundra fire: Geophysical Research Letters, v. 41, no. 11, p. 3906-3913, https://doi.org/10.1002/2014GL060533.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"3906","endPage":"3913","numberOfPages":"8","ipdsId":"IP-056850","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472926,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2014gl060533","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":289062,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":289061,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1002/2014GL060533"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Anaktuvuk River;North Slope Of Alaska","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -159.0,68.0 ], [ -159.0,72.0 ], [ -147.0,72.0 ], [ -147.0,68.0 ], [ -159.0,68.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"41","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-06-02","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ad32d9e4b0729c154181aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Liu, Lin","contributorId":92950,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Liu","given":"Lin","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":36342,"text":"Earth System Science Programme, Faculty of Science, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":495340,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jafarov, Elchin E.","contributorId":40880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jafarov","given":"Elchin","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schaefer, Kevin M.","contributorId":89449,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schaefer","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Jones, Benjamin M. 0000-0002-1517-4711 bjones@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1517-4711","contributorId":2286,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Benjamin","email":"bjones@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":118,"text":"Alaska Science Center Geography","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":495333,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Zebker, Howard A.","contributorId":80401,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zebker","given":"Howard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Williams, Christopher A.","contributorId":91791,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Rogan, John","contributorId":83008,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rogan","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Zhang, Tingjun","contributorId":66600,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Zhang","given":"Tingjun","affiliations":[{"id":28117,"text":"Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, China","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":495335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

Federal, State, Tribal, and local agencies work in partnership to (1) replace data that are older and of lower quality and (2) provide coverage where publicly accessible data do not exist. A joint goal of local, State, and Federal partners is to acquire consistent, statewide coverage to support existing and emerging applications enabled by lidar data.</p>\n<p>The National Enhanced Elevation Assessment (NEEA; Dewberry, 2011) evaluated multiple elevation data acquisition options to determine the optimal data quality and data replacement cycle relative to cost to meet the identified requirements of the user community. The evaluation demonstrated that lidar acquisition at quality level 2 for the conterminous United States and quality level 5 interferometric synthetic aperture radar (ifsar) data for Alaska with a 6- to 10-year acquisition cycle provided the highest benefit/cost ratios. The 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) initiative selected an 8-year acquisition cycle for the respective quality levels. 3DEP, managed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Office of Management and Budget Circular A&ndash;16 lead agency for terrestrial elevation data, responds to the growing need for high-quality topographic data and a wide range of other 3D representations of the Nation&rsquo;s natural and constructed features.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs20143053","usgsCitation":"Carswell, W., 2014, The 3D The Farewell and Kilbuck terranes can be linked by felsic magmatism at ca. 850 Ma and by abundant detrital zircons in the Farewell that overlap the ca. 2010–2085 Ma age range of granitoids in the Kilbuck. The Farewell and Arctic Alaska terranes have already been linked via correlative Neoproterozoic to Devonian carbonate platform deposits that share nearly identical faunas of mixed Siberian and Laurentian affinity. New igneous ages strengthen these ties. Specifically, 988, 979, and 979 Ma metafelsites in the Farewell terrane are close in age to a 971 Ma granitic orthogneiss in the Arctic Alaska terrane. Likewise, 852, 850, 845, and 837 Ma granitic orthogneisses, metafelsite, and rhyolite in the Farewell terrane are similar to the reported 874 to 848 Ma age range of metarhyolites in the Arctic Alaska terrane. The Kilbuck and Arctic Alaska terranes have been previously linked on the basis of provenance: detrital zircons from the Carboniferous Nuka Formation in the Arctic Alaska terrane range from 2013 to 2078 Ma, overlapping the age of Kilbuck granitoids. A new 849 Ma age of a Kilbuck granitoid strengthens the proposed connection. Among the other new results from Kilbuck terrane is a 2085 Ma zircon from a granitoid that now stands as the oldest tightly dated rock in Alaska. We conclude that the Kilbuck, Farewell, and Arctic Alaska terranes were not independent entities with unique geologic histories but instead are related pieces of the circum-Arctic tectonic puzzle.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"University of Chicago Press","doi":"10.1086/675663","usgsCitation":"Bradley, D., McClelland, W.C., Friedman, R.M., O’Sullivan, P.B., Layer, P., The Alaska North Slope is a broad, north-dipping coastal plain that is underlain by a thick succession of sedimentary rocks that accumulated steadily throughout much of the Phanerozoic during three major tectonic sequences: the Mississippian through Triassic Ellesmerian sequence, the Jurassic through Lower Cretaceous Beaufortian sequence, and the Cretaceous and Tertiary Brookian sequence. Stratigraphic packages associated with all three of these tectonic sequences are suited to geologic carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) sequestration. The lower part of the Ellesmerian sequence contains five potential SAUs, two of which have reservoirs within the Endicott Group and three of which have reservoirs within the Lisburne Group. Another potential SAU has sandstone-prone reservoir units interbedded with the upper part of the Ellesmerian Shublik Formation and the Beaufortian Kingak Shale. The Brookian sequence contains eight potential SAUs that have reservoirs that are defined by the various Cretaceous and Tertiary deltaic topset strata of the Colville foreland basin as well as associated slope aprons and submarine turbidite fan complexes.</p>\n<p>In east-central Alaska, Kandik Basin is an extension of cratonic North America and straddles the border between Alaska and Canada. The basin contains a section of Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic rocks, which have been multiply deformed during the Phanerozoic. Paleozoic strata within the basin appear to be suited to geologic CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration. We defined two SAUs within this interval, which are the Upper Devonian and Mississippian Nation River Formation SAU and the Lower Permian to Lower Cretaceous Step Conglomerate and Tahkandit Limestone SAU.</p>\n<p>For each SAU in both of the basins, we discuss the areal distribution of suitable CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration reservoir rock. We also characterize the overlying sealing unit and describe the geologic characteristics that influence the potential CO<sub>2</sub> storage volume and reservoir performance. These characteristics include reservoir depth, gross thickness, net thickness, porosity, permeability, and groundwater salinity. Case-by-case strategies for estimating the pore volume existing within structurally and (or) stratigraphically closed traps are presented. Understanding this unwelcome trend requires analytical frameworks that simulate how various interacting social, economic, and biophysical factors influence those damages. A methodological framework is developed for simulating expected residential property losses from wildfire [E(RLW)], which is a probabilistic monetary measure of wildfire risk to residential properties in the WUI. E(RLW) is simulated for Flathead County, Montana for five, 10-year subperiods covering the period 2010-2059, under various assumptions about future climate change, economic growth, land use policy, and forest management. Results show statistically significant increases in the spatial extent of WUI properties, the number of residential structures at risk from wildfire, and E(RLW) over the 50-year evaluation period for both the county and smaller subareas (i.e., neighborhoods and parcels). The E(RLW) simulation framework presented here advances the field of wildfire risk assessment by providing a finer-scale tool that incorporates a set of dynamic, interacting processes. The framework can be applied using other scenarios for climate change, economic growth, land use policy, and forest management, and in other areas.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Advances in environmental research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Nova Science Analytical methods that assign individuals to their putative population of origin have utility in both basic and applied research, providing information about population-specific life history and habitat use, ecotoxins, pathogen and parasite loads, and many other non-genetic ecological, or phenotypic traits. Although the question is initially directed at the origin of individuals, in most cases the ultimate desire is to investigate the distribution of some trait among populations. Current practice is to assign individuals to a population of origin and study properties of the trait among individuals within population strata as if they constituted independent samples. It seemed that approach might bias population-specific trait inference. In this study we made trait inferences directly through modeling, bypassing individual assignment. We extended a Bayesian model for population mixture analysis to incorporate parameters for the phenotypic trait and compared its performance to that of individual assignment with a minimum probability threshold for assignment. The Bayesian mixture model outperformed individual assignment under some trait inference conditions. However, by discarding individuals whose origins are most uncertain, the individual assignment method provided a less complex analytical technique whose performance may be adequate for some common trait inference problems. Our results provide specific guidance for method selection under various genetic relationships among populations with different trait distributions.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"PLoS ONE","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Public Library of Science","publisherLocation":"San Francisco, CA","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0098470","usgsCitation":"Moran, P., Bromaghin, J.F., and Masuda, M., 2014, Use of genetic data to infer population-specific ecological and phenotypic traits from mixed aggregations: PLoS ONE, v. 9, no. 6, 13 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0098470.","productDescription":"13 p.","numberOfPages":"13","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-050953","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":472945,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0098470","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":288179,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":288178,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0098470"}],"volume":"9","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2014-06-06","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5396c953e4b0f7580bc0a8c7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moran, Paul","contributorId":42140,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moran","given":"Paul","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":492862,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bromaghin, Jeffrey F. 0000-0002-7209-9500 jbromaghin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7209-9500","contributorId":139899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bromaghin","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jbromaghin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":492860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Masuda, Michele","contributorId":24280,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Masuda","given":"Michele","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":492861,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Consequently, there is a need to assemble relevant datasets and to develop modeling or other analytical approaches to evaluate the likelihood of particular sea-level rise impacts, such as coastal erosion, and to inform coastal management decisions with this information. This report builds on previous work that compiled oceanographic and geomorphic data as part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) for the U.S. Atlantic coast, and developed a Bayesian Network to predict shoreline-change rates based on sea-level rise plus variables that describe the hydrodynamic and geologic setting. This report extends the previous analysis to include the Gulf and Pacific coasts of the continental United States and Alaska and Hawaii, which required using methods applied to the USGS CVI dataset to extract data for these regions. The Bayesian Network converts inputs that include observations of local rates of relative sea-level change, mean wave height, mean tide range, a geomorphic classification, coastal slope, and observed shoreline-change rates to calculate the probability of the shoreline-erosion rate exceeding a threshold level of 1 meter per year for the coasts of the United States. The calculated probabilities were compared to the historical observations of shoreline change to evaluate the hindcast success rate of the most likely probability of shoreline change. Highest accuracy was determined for the coast of Hawaii (98 percent success rate) and lowest accuracy was determined for the Gulf of Mexico (34 percent success rate). The minimum success rate rose to nearly 80 percent (Atlantic and Gulf coasts) when success included shoreline-change outcomes that were adjacent to the most likely outcome. Additionally, the probabilistic approach determines the confidence in calculated outcomes as the probability of the most likely outcome. The confidence was highest along the Pacific coast and it was lowest along the Alaskan coast.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr20141083","issn":"2331-1258","usgsCitation":"Gutierrez, B.T., Plant, N.G., Pendleton, E., and Thieler, E.R., 2014, Using a Bayesian Network to predict shore-line change vulnerability to sea-level rise for the coasts of the United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2014-1083, v, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20141083.","productDescription":"v, 26 p.","numberOfPages":"32","onlineOnly":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-053816","costCenters":[{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":288160,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr20141083.jpg"},{"id":288158,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2014/1083/"},{"id":288159,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2014/1083/pdf/ofr2014-1083.pdf"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -130.0,20.0 ], [ -130.0,50.0 ], [ -60.0,50.0 ], [ -60.0,20.0 ], [ -130.0,20.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ae789ce4b0abf75cf2da90","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gutierrez, Benjamin T.","contributorId":58670,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gutierrez","given":"Benjamin","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":493044,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Plant, Nathaniel G. 0000-0002-5703-5672 nplant@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5703-5672","contributorId":3503,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Plant","given":"Nathaniel","email":"nplant@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":508,"text":"Office of the AD Hazards","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":574,"text":"St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":493043,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Pendleton, Elizabeth A.","contributorId":101312,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pendleton","given":"Elizabeth A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":493045,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Thieler, E.
