These cross-scale interactions, as they are commonly known, are particularly important to understand relationships among ecological properties at macroscales. In this paper, we present a novel, multi-level multi-task learning framework for modeling nested geospatial data in the lake ecology domain. Specifically, we consider region-specific models to predict lake water quality from multi-scaled factors. Our framework enables distinct models to be developed for each region using both its local and regional information. The framework also allows information to be shared among the region-specific models through their common set of latent factors. Such information sharing helps to create more robust models especially for regions with limited or no training data. In addition, the framework can automatically determine cross-scale interactions between the regional variables and the local variables that are nested within them. Our experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms all the baseline methods in at least 64% of the regions for 3 out of 4 lake water quality datasets evaluated in this study. Furthermore, the latent factors can be clustered to obtain a new set of regions that is more aligned with the response variables than the original regions that were defined a priori from the ecology domain.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"2017 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"IEEE","doi":"10.1109/ICDM.2017.154","usgsCitation":"Yuan, S., Zhou, J., Tan, P., Fergus, E., Wagner, T., and Sorrano, P., 2017, Multi-level multi-task learning for modeling cross-scale interactions in nested geospatial data, in 2017 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM), https://doi.org/10.1109/ICDM.2017.154.","ipdsId":"IP-084708","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":354362,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5b155e00e4b092d9651e1ba4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yuan, Shuai","contributorId":204925,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Yuan","given":"Shuai","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6601,"text":"Michigan State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":735482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zhou, Jiayu","contributorId":204926,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Zhou","given":"Jiayu","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6601,"text":"Michigan State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":735483,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Tan, Pang-Ning","contributorId":204927,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Tan","given":"Pang-Ning","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6601,"text":"Michigan State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":735484,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Fergus, Emi","contributorId":204928,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fergus","given":"Emi","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":37008,"text":"National Research Council","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":735485,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Wagner, Tyler 0000-0003-1726-016X twagner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1726-016X","contributorId":1050,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wagner","given":"Tyler","email":"twagner@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":735481,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Sorrano, Patricia","contributorId":204929,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Sorrano","given":"Patricia","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6601,"text":"Michigan State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":735486,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Here we discuss the value of considering multiple threats in research and management, offer suggestions for filling knowledge gaps, and provide guidance for addressing the urgent management challenges posed by multiple threats in freshwater ecosystems. There is a growing literature assessing responses to multiple alterations, and we build off this background to identify three areas that require greater attention: linking observed alterations to threats, understanding when and where threats overlap, and choosing metrics that best quantify the effects of multiple threats. Advancing science in these areas will help us understand existing ecosystem conditions and predict future risk from multiple threats. Because addressing the complex issues and novel ecosystems that arise from the interaction of multiple threats in freshwater ecosystems represents a significant management challenge, and the risks of management failure include loss of biodiversity, ecological goods, and ecosystem services, we also identify actions that could improve decision-making and management outcomes. These actions include drawing insights from management of individual threats, using threat attributes (e.g., causes and spatio-temporal dynamics) to identify suitable management approaches, testing management strategies that are likely to be successful despite uncertainties about the nature of interactions among threats, avoiding unintended consequences, and maximizing conservation benefits. We also acknowledge the broadly applicable challenges of decision-making within a socio-political and economic framework, and suggest that multidisciplinary teams will be needed to innovate solutions to meet the current and future challenge of interacting threats in freshwater ecosystems.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of California Press","doi":"10.1525/elementa.256","usgsCitation":"Craig, L.S., Olden, J., Arthington, A., Entrekin, S., Hawkins, C.P., Kelly, J.J., Kennedy, T., Maitland, B.M., Rosi, E.J., Roy, A.H., Strayer, D.L., Tank, J., West, A.O., and Wooten, M.S., 2017, Meeting the challenge of interacting threats in freshwater ecosystems: A call to scientists and managers: Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene, Article 72; Becoming a translational ecologist requires specific attention to obtaining critical non‐scientific disciplinary breadth and skills that are not typically gained through graduate‐level education. Here, we outline a need for individuals with broad training in interdisciplinary skills, use our personal experiences as a basis for assessing the types of interdisciplinary skills that would benefit potential translational ecologists, and present steps that interested ecologists may take toward becoming translational. Skills relevant to translational ecologists may be garnered through personal experiences, informal training, short courses, fellowships, and graduate programs, among others. We argue that a translational ecology workforce is needed to bridge the gap between science and natural resource decisions. WVOs consist of two predominant value orientations (domination and mutualism) defined by how people view their relationship with wildlife. WVO assessment, which analyzes response patterns on a series of scaled agree/disagree statements representing these two orientations, has led to the identification of four distinct types of people: a) utilitarian (high score on domination and low score on mutualism); (b) mutualist (low score on domination and high score on mutualism); (c) pluralist (high score on both WVO scales); and (d) distanced (low score on both WVO scales). The theoretical framework of WVOs is based on evidence that changing lifestyles arising from modernization contribute to a gradual shift away from domination toward mutualism. This theory suggests a longitudinal process of change that was tested in 2004 by cross-sectional analyses in 19 western states. More recent replications of WVO assessment in South Dakota in 2012 measured relatively similar proportions of WVO types (50% and 49% utilitarian, 15% and 16% mutualist, 29% and 25% pluralist, and 6% and 10% distanced in 2004 and 2012, respectively). Also, we identified similar proportions of WVO types and recreation participation comparing two counties with the largest urban populations (Minnehaha and Pennington) to the remainder of the state. Our results illustrate opportunities for continuing longitudinal analyses of WVO with an additional focus on within state changes.
","language":"English","publisher":"South Dakota Academy of Science","usgsCitation":"Gigliotti, L.M., and Don Carlos, A.W., 2017, Wildlife value orientation stability among South Dakota residents: Setting the stage for a longitudinal analysis: Proceedings of the South Dakota Academy of Science, v. 96, p. 77-93.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"77","endPage":"93","ipdsId":"IP-074920","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":353471,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":353432,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://sdaos.org/?s=Year%3A+2017"}],"volume":"96","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee79de4b0da30c1bfc310","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gigliotti, Larry M. 0000-0002-1693-5113 lgigliotti@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1693-5113","contributorId":3906,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gigliotti","given":"Larry","email":"lgigliotti@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":733505,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Don Carlos, Andrew W.","contributorId":89755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Don Carlos","given":"Andrew","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":733590,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We show that sustained, nutrient rich, lower pH submarine groundwater discharging onto nearshore coral reefs off west Maui lowers the pH of seawater and exposes corals to nitrate concentrations 50 times higher than ambient. Rates of coral calcification are substantially decreased, and rates of bioerosion are orders of magnitude higher than those observed in coral cores collected in the Pacific under equivalent low pH conditions but living in oligotrophic waters. However, the necessary degree of thermal stability required in broadband installations to avoid generating noise or compromising the fidelity in the seismic records is largely unknown and likely application dependent. To quantify the temperature sensitivity of seismometers over a broad range of frequencies, we artificially induced local temperature changes on three different models of seismometers to measure the effect of thermal variations on seismometer output. We found that diurnal temperature changes above 0.002°C root mean square (rms) showed significant changes in velocity and acceleration output in comparison to thermally stable reference measurements. We also found that sensor incoherent self‐noise increased with temperature variation; these increases in noise can be modeled as <span id=\"MathJax-Element-1-Frame\" class=\"MathJax\" data-mathml=\"<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mn xmlns="">1</mn><mo xmlns="">/</mo><mi xmlns="">f</mi></math>\">1/f noise (pink noise), and are unlikely to be easily corrected for. These experimental results are compared with the data from Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Global Seismographic Network (GSN) station TUC (Tucson, Arizona). This station is well instrumented with temperature sensors and has three different broadband seismometers, each of which uses a different method of thermal isolation. We show that the water bricks and borehole installations give ample temperature attenuation to thermally isolate seismometers from diurnal thermal variability that would compromise seismic data. We find that seismometer installations that provide thermal stability below 0.002°C rms could help to improve long‐period vertical seismic data across the GSN by decreasing temperature‐driven <span id=\"MathJax-Element-2-Frame\" class=\"MathJax\" data-mathml=\"<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mn xmlns="">1</mn><mo xmlns="">/</mo><mi xmlns="">f</mi></math>\">1/f noise.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0120170233","usgsCitation":"Doody, C., Ringler, A.T., Anthony, R.E., Wilson, D.C., Holland, A., Hutt, C.R., and Sandoval, L., 2017, Effects of thermal variability on broadband seismometers: Controlled experiments, observations, and implications: Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, v. 108, no. 1, p. 493-502, https://doi.org/10.1785/0120170233.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"493","endPage":"502","ipdsId":"IP-091363","costCenters":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":352146,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"108","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-12-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee7aae4b0da30c1bfc333","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doody, Claire","contributorId":202828,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Doody","given":"Claire","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729802,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ringler, Adam T. 0000-0002-9839-4188 aringler@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9839-4188","contributorId":145576,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ringler","given":"Adam","email":"aringler@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729803,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Anthony, Robert 0000-0001-7089-8846 reanthony@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7089-8846","contributorId":202829,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anthony","given":"Robert","email":"reanthony@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729804,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Wilson, David C. 0000-0003-2582-5159 dwilson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2582-5159","contributorId":145580,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"David","email":"dwilson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Holland, Austin 0000-0002-7843-1981 aaholland@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7843-1981","contributorId":173969,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holland","given":"Austin","email":"aaholland@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729806,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Hutt, Charles R. 0000-0001-9033-9195 bhutt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9033-9195","contributorId":1622,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hutt","given":"Charles","email":"bhutt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729807,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Sandoval, Leo lsandoval@usgs.gov","contributorId":202830,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sandoval","given":"Leo","email":"lsandoval@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":729808,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

A subspecies endemic to Puerto Rico (A. s. venator) is listed as endangered and restricted to mature and old secondary montane forests and shade coffee plantations. However, recent information about the population status and distribution of Puerto Rican Sharp‐shinned Hawks is lacking. We developed a spatial geographic distribution model for Sharp‐shinned Hawks in Puerto Rico from 33 locations collected during four breeding seasons (2013–2016) using biologically relevant landscape variables (aspect, canopy closure, elevation, rainfall, slope, and terrain roughness). Elevation accounted for 89.8% of the model fit and predicted that the greatest probability of occurrence of Sharp‐shinned Hawks in Puerto Rico (> 60%) was at elevations above 900 m. To address ecosystem degradation in the Laurentian Great Lakes, Canada and the United States of America established the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). In 1987, 43 highly polluted and impacted areas were identified under the GLWQA as having one or more of 14 Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs) to the physical and chemical habitat for fish, wildlife and humans, and were designated as Areas of Concern (AOC). Subnational jurisdictions combined with local stakeholders, with support from federal governments, developed plans to remediate and restore these sites. Biotelemetry (the tracking of animals using electronic tags) provides information on the spatial ecology of fish in the wild relevant to habitat management and stock assessment. Here, seven case studies are presented where biotelemetry data were directly incorporated within the AOC Remedial Action Plan (RAP) process. Specific applications include determining seasonal fish–habitat associations to inform habitat restoration plans, identifying the distribution of pollutant-indicator species to identify exposure risk to contamination sources, informing the development of fish passage facilities to enable fish to access fragmented upstream habitats, and assessing fish use of created or restored habitats. With growing capacity for fish biotelemetry research in the Great Lakes, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of incorporating biotelemetry into AOC RAP processes to improve the science and practice of restoration and to facilitate the delisting of AOCs.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s00267-017-0937-x","usgsCitation":"Brooks, J., Boston, C., Doka, S.E., Gorsky, D., Gustavson, K., Hondorp, D.W., Isermann, D.A., Midwood, J.D., Pratt, T., Rous, A.M., Withers, J.L., Krueger, C., and Cooke, S.J., 2017, Use of fish telemetry in rehabilitation planning, management, and monitoring in Areas of Concern in the Laurentian Great Lakes: Environmental Management, v. 60, no. 6, p. 1139-1154, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00267-017-0937-x.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1139","endPage":"1154","ipdsId":"IP-087436","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":353940,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Great Lakes","volume":"60","issue":"6","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-09-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee79ce4b0da30c1bfc2fe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brooks, J.L.","contributorId":10759,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooks","given":"J.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Boston, C.","contributorId":204672,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boston","given":"C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Doka, Susan E.","contributorId":173419,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Doka","given":"Susan","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":13677,"text":"Fisheries and Oceans Canada","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":734639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gorsky, Dimitry","contributorId":169691,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gorsky","given":"Dimitry","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Gustavson, K.","contributorId":204674,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gustavson","given":"K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Hondorp, Darryl W. 0000-0002-5182-1963 dhondorp@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5182-1963","contributorId":5376,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hondorp","given":"Darryl","email":"dhondorp@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":734615,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Isermann, Daniel A. 0000-0003-1151-9097 disermann@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1151-9097","contributorId":5167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Isermann","given":"Daniel","email":"disermann@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":734614,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Midwood, Jonathan D.","contributorId":74659,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Midwood","given":"Jonathan","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":734642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Pratt, T. The geodetic network in central Washington has been used to interpret large-scale N-S shortening and westward-increasing strain; however, geodetic data are unable to resolve shortening rates across individual structures in this low-strain-rate environment. Resolving fault geometries, slip rates, and timing of faulting in the Yakima fold province is critically important to seismic hazard assessment for nearby infrastructure and population centers.

The Saddle Mountains anticline is one of the most prominent Yakima folds. It is unique within the Yakima fold province in that the syntectonic strata of the Ringold Formation are preserved and provide a record of deformation and drainage reorganization. Here, we present new stratigraphic columns, U-Pb zircon tephra ages, U-series caliche ages, and geophysical modeling that constrain two line-balanced and retrodeformed cross sections. These new constraints indicate that the Saddle Mountains anticline has accommodated 1.0−1.3 km of N-S shortening since 10 Ma, that shortening increases westward along the anticline, and that the average slip rate has increased 6-fold since 6.8 Ma. Provenance analysis suggests that the source terrane for the Ringold Formation was similar to that of the modern Snake River Plain. Using new slip rates and structural constraints, we calculate the strain accumulation time, interpretable as a recurrence interval, for earthquakes on the Saddle Mountains fault and find that large-magnitude earthquakes could rupture along the Saddle Mountains fault every 2−11 k.y.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/B31783.1","usgsCitation":"Staisch, L.M., Kelsey, H., Sherrod, B.L., Moller, A., Paces, J.B., Blakely, R.J., and Styron, R., 2017, Miocene−Pleistocene deformation of the Saddle Mountains: Implications for seismic hazard in central Washington, USA: GSA Bulletin, v. 130, no. 3-4, p. 411-437, https://doi.org/10.1130/B31783.1.","productDescription":"27 p.","startPage":"411","endPage":"437","ipdsId":"IP-084555","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":349635,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -119,\n              46.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -119,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              47\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              46.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"130","issue":"3-4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-10-10","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60faf7e4b06e28e9c22a29","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Staisch, Lydia M. 0000-0002-1414-5994 lstaisch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1414-5994","contributorId":167068,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Staisch","given":"Lydia","email":"lstaisch@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":724269,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kelsey, Harvey","contributorId":106978,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kelsey","given":"Harvey","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":724270,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Sherrod, Brian L. 0000-0002-4492-8631 bsherrod@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4492-8631","contributorId":2834,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sherrod","given":"Brian","email":"bsherrod@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":724271,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moller, Andreas","contributorId":201081,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Moller","given":"Andreas","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":724272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Paces, James B. 0000-0002-9809-8493 jbpaces@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9809-8493","contributorId":2514,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paces","given":"James","email":"jbpaces@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":724273,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Blakely, Richard J. 0000-0003-1701-5236 blakely@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1701-5236","contributorId":1540,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blakely","given":"Richard","email":"blakely@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":662,"text":"Western Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":724274,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Styron, Richard","contributorId":201082,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Styron","given":"Richard","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":724275,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

Here we try to analyze primary features of this type of event by using dynamic rupture simulations based on a multifault interface and later compare our results with space geodetic models. Our results show that starting from homogeneous prestress conditions, slip heterogeneity can be achieved as a result of variable dip angle along strike and the modulation imposed by step over segments. We also considered effects from a topographic free surface and find that although this does not produce significant first-order effects for this earthquake, even a low topographic dome such as the Cucapah range can affect the rupture front pattern and fault slip rate. Finally, we inverted available interferometric synthetic aperture radar data, using the same geometry as the dynamic rupture model, and retrieved the space geodetic slip distribution that serves to constrain the dynamic rupture models. The one to one comparison of the final fault slip pattern generated with dynamic rupture models and the space geodetic inversion show good agreement. Our results lead us to the following conclusion: in a possible multifault rupture scenario, and if we have first-order geometry constraints, dynamic rupture models can be very efficient in predicting large-scale slip heterogeneities that are important for the correct assessment of seismic hazard and the magnitude of future events. Our work contributes to understanding the complex nature of multifault systems.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1002/2017JB014294","usgsCitation":"Kyriakopoulos, C., Oglesby, D.D., Funning, G.J., and Ryan, K., 2017, Dynamic rupture modeling of the M7.2 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake: Comparison with a geodetic model: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 122, no. 12, p. 10263-10279, https://doi.org/10.1002/2017JB014294.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"10263","endPage":"10279","ipdsId":"IP-085833","costCenters":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":469265,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2017jb014294","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":351348,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Mexico, United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.5,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5,\n              33\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5,\n              31.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5,\n              31.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.5,\n              33\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"122","issue":"12","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-12-19","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a7d7000e4b00f54eb2441db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kyriakopoulos, Christos","contributorId":201722,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kyriakopoulos","given":"Christos","affiliations":[{"id":12655,"text":"University of California, Riverside","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":726852,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Oglesby, David D.","contributorId":201723,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Oglesby","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":12655,"text":"University of California, Riverside","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":726853,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Funning, Gareth J. 0000-0002-8247-0545","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8247-0545","contributorId":172418,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Funning","given":"Gareth","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":6984,"text":"UC Riverside","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":726854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ryan, Kenneth 0000-0003-3933-3163 kryan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3933-3163","contributorId":191921,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ryan","given":"Kenneth","email":"kryan@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":726851,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

An earthquake early warning system, ShakeAlert, is providing alerts to beta end users in the western United States, specifically California, Oregon, and Washington. An essential aspect of the earthquake early warning system is the development of a framework to test modifications to code to ensure functionality and assess performance. In 2016, a Testing and Certification Platform (TCP) was included in the development of the Production Prototype version of ShakeAlert. The purpose of the TCP is to evaluate the robustness of candidate code that is proposed for deployment on ShakeAlert Production Prototype servers. TCP consists of two main components: a real‐time in situ test that replicates the real‐time production system and an offline playback system to replay test suites. The real‐time tests of system performance assess code optimization and stability. The offline tests comprise a stress test of candidate code to assess if the code is production ready. The test suite includes over 120 events including local, regional, and teleseismic historic earthquakes, recentering and calibration events, and other anomalous and potentially problematic signals. Two assessments of alert performance are conducted. First, point‐source assessments are undertaken to compare magnitude, epicentral location, and origin time with the Advanced National Seismic System Comprehensive Catalog, as well as to evaluate alert latency. Second, we describe assessment of the quality of ground‐motion predictions at end‐user sites by comparing predicted shaking intensities to ShakeMaps for historic events and implement a threshold‐based approach that assesses how often end users initiate the appropriate action, based on their ground‐shaking threshold. TCP has been developed to be a convenient streamlined procedure for objectively testing algorithms, and it has been designed with flexibility to accommodate significant changes in development of new or modified system code. It is expected that the TCP will continue to evolve along with the ShakeAlert system, and the framework we describe here provides one example of how earthquake early warning systems can be evaluated.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0220170138","usgsCitation":"Cochran, E.S., Kohler, M.D., Given, D.D., Guiwits, S., Andrews, Since commencing operations in 2004 it has imaged ~ 77 % of Mars at 20 m/pixel or better. The instrument team uses the Video Image Communication And Retrieval (VICAR) software to produce and archive a range of data products from uncalibrated and radiometrically calibrated images to controlled digital topographic models (DTMs) and orthoimages and regional mosaics of DTM and orthophoto data (Gwinner et al. 2009; 2010b; 2016). Alternatives to this highly effective standard processing pipeline are nevertheless of interest to researchers who do not have access to the full VICAR suite and may wish to make topographic products or perform other (e. g., spectrophotometric) analyses prior to the release of the highest level products. We have therefore developed software to ingest HRSC images and model their geometry in the USGS Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS3), which can be used for data preparation, geodetic control, and analysis, and the commercial photogrammetric software SOCET SET (® BAE Systems; Miller and Walker 1993; 1995) which can be used for independent production of DTMs and orthoimages.

The initial implementation of this capability utilized the then-current ISIS2 system and the generic pushbroom sensor model of SOCET SET, and was described in the DTM comparison of independent photogrammetric processing by different elements of the HRSC team (Heipke et al. 2007). A major drawback of this prototype was that neither software system then allowed for pushbroom images in which the exposure time changes from line to line. Except at periapsis, HRSC makes such timing changes every few hundred lines to accommodate changes of altitude and velocity in its elliptical orbit. As a result, it was necessary to split observations into blocks of constant exposure time, greatly increasing the effort needed to control the images and collect DTMs.

Here, we describe a substantially improved HRSC processing capability that incorporates sensor models with varying line timing in the current ISIS3 system (Sides 2017) and SOCET SET. This enormously reduces the work effort for processing most images and eliminates the artifacts that arose from segmenting them. In addition, the software takes advantage of the continuously evolving capabilities of ISIS3 and the improved image matching module NGATE (Next Generation Automatic Terrain Extraction, incorporating area and feature based algorithms, multi-image and multi-direction matching) of SOCET SET, thus greatly reducing the need for manual editing of DTM errors. We have also developed a procedure for geodetically controlling the images to Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data by registering a preliminary stereo topographic model to MOLA by using the point cloud alignment (pc_align) function of the NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline (ASP; Moratto et al. 2010). This effectively converts inter-image tiepoints into ground control points in the MOLA coordinate system. Tropical forests exchange more C, energy, and water with the atmosphere than any other class of land ecosystems. Further, tropical-forest C cycling is likely responding to the rapid global warming, intensifying water stress, and increasing atmospheric CO2 levels. Projections of the future C balance of the tropics vary widely among global models. A current effort of the modeling community, the ILAMB (International Land Model Benchmarking) project, is to compile robust observations that can be used to improve the accuracy and realism of the land models for all major biomes. Our goal with this paper is to identify field observations of tropical-forest ecosystem C stocks and fluxes, and of their long-term trends and climatic and CO2 sensitivities, that can serve this effort. Geometric distortion is especially a problem with pushbroom type sensors, such as the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Geometric distortions occur at a range of frequencies that may not be obvious in the image products, but can cause problems with stereo image correlation in the production of digital elevation models, and in measuring surface changes over time in orthorectified images. The HiRISE focal plane comprises a staggered array of fourteen charge-coupled devices (CCDs) with pixel IFOV of 1 microradian. The high spatial resolution of HiRISE makes it both sensitive to, and an excellent recorder of jitter. We present an algorithm using Fourier analysis to resolve the jitter function for a HiRISE image that is then used to update instrument pointing information to remove geometric distortions from the image. Implementation of the jitter analysis and image correction is performed on selected HiRISE images. Resulting corrected images and updated pointing information are made available to the public. Results show marked reduction of geometric distortions. Since 2006, the U.S. Geological Survey has been working in collaboration with several partners to develop EEW for the United States. The goal is to create and operate an EEW system, called ShakeAlert, for the highest risk areas of the United States, starting with the West Coast states of California, Oregon, and Washington. In early 2016, the Production Prototype v.1.0 was established for California; then, in early 2017, v.1.2 was established for the West Coast, with earthquake notifications being distributed to a group of beta users in California, Oregon, and Washington. The new ShakeAlert Production Prototype was an outgrowth from an earlier demonstration EEW system that began sending test notifications to selected users in California in January 2012. ShakeAlert leverages the considerable physical, technical, and organizational earthquake monitoring infrastructure of the Advanced National Seismic System, a nationwide federation of cooperating seismic networks. When fully implemented, the ShakeAlert system may reduce damage and injury caused by large earthquakes, improve the nation’s resilience, and speed We measured concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and suspended sediment (SS) upstream and downstream of paired ponds and control reaches. Nitrate and SS concentrations decreased, ammonium concentrations increased, and SRP concentrations were unaffected downstream of the ponds and relative to the control reaches. The pond effect on nitrate concentration was a reduction of 112 ± 55 μg-N/L (19%) compared to a control-reach—influenced reduction of 28 ± 17 μg-N/L. The pond effect on ammonium concentration was an increase of 9.47 ± 10.9 μg-N/L (59%) compared to the control-reach—influenced reduction of 1.49 ± 1.37 μg-N/L. The pond effect on SS concentration was a decrease of 3.41 ± 1.68 mg/L (40%) compared to a control-reach—influenced increase of 0.56 ± 0.27 mg/L. Ponds on lower-order streams reduced nitrate concentrations by greater amounts compared to those in higher-order streams. Older ponds reduced SS concentrations by greater amounts compared to younger ponds. The findings of this study indicate that beaver ponds provide water-quality benefits to rural Coastal Plain streams by reducing concentrations of nitrate and suspended sediment.
","language":"English","publisher":"Eagle Hill Institute","doi":"10.1656/058.016.0408","usgsCitation":"Bason, C.W., Kroes, D., and Brinson, M., 2017, The effect of beaver ponds on water quality in rural coastal plain streams: Southeastern Naturalist, v. 16, no. 4, p. 584-602, https://doi.org/10.1656/058.016.0408.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"584","endPage":"602","ipdsId":"IP-076120","costCenters":[{"id":24708,"text":"Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":351269,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -77.75848388671875,\n              35.24225438307026\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.95236206054688,\n              35.24225438307026\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.95236206054688,\n              35.89795019335754\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.75848388671875,\n              35.89795019335754\n            ],\n            [\n              -77.75848388671875,\n              35.24225438307026\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":5,"text":"Lafayette PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a7c1e78e4b00f54eb229312","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bason, Christopher W.","contributorId":201992,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Bason","given":"Christopher","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":36316,"text":"Delaware Center for the Inland Bays","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":727336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kroes, Daniel 0000-0001-9104-9077 dkroes@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9104-9077","contributorId":3830,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kroes","given":"Daniel","email":"dkroes@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":369,"text":"Louisiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":24708,"text":"Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":727335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Brinson, Mark M.","contributorId":45761,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brinson","given":"Mark M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":727337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
