A coal deposit in Bay County, Mich., typical of Pennsylvanian-coal deposits in the State, was studied to determine the degree to which hydrologic factors might affect future coal mining. The coal deposit, which averages about 0.5 meters in thickness, lies 50 meters below land surface. It is part of a multi-layered aquifer system that contains sandstone, shale, sand and gravel, and clay units in addition to beds of coal. Hydrologic characteristics (hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient) of each unit were evaluated by analyses of aquifer tests and a finite-difference groundwater flow model. A model simulating groundwater flow to a hypothetical mine was developed. Results of the study indicate that seepage will probably not be great enough to preclude mining coal. Also, pumping water to keep the mine dry will have little effect on heads in aquifers outside the mine during the first decade of mining.
Although coal was mined in Michigan during 1860-1950, significant reserves remain. These deposits, part of the Saginaw Formation of Pennsylvanian age, are near the industrialized parts of the State. The quantity of pumped water needed to keep mines dry and the effect of pumping on aquifers surrounding the mines is a major factor in determining the feasibility of opening new mines.

Multiple regression techniques were used to develop the relation between peak discharges and drainage area. Data collected at 170 stream gaging sites were used in the analyses.
Analyses indicated that the best estimating equations could be derived by dividing the state into three regions, Regions 1 and 2 covering the Ohio River basin in West Virginia and Region 3 covering the Potomac River basin in West Virginia.
The method is applicable for drainage areas between 0.3 and 2,000 square miles. Graphs are provided to estimate the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year flood peaks for drainage areas between 1 and 1,000 square miles. Peak discharges for drainage areas less than 1 or greater than 1,000 square miles can be estimated using the appropriate equations provided on each graph.

The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 3 and 6 in Csejtey and Miller, 1978 (OF 78- 558B)). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present. Geochemical anomalies determined by analyses of rock and stream—sediment samples in which no metallic mineral was identified are also omitted.
This report is divided into three parts: a section made up of summaries of data and reference lists arranged alphabetically by occurrence name; a second section that lists synonyms for names in the first section and the names of owners and operators of mines and prospects; and a final section that lists alphabetically by author all references mentioned in the first section and in these introductory paragraphs.

Cap rock, salt, and interbeds of the Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation of Middle Pennsylvanian age were penetrated. The observed depth below land surface of the cap rock-salt interface ranges from 163 meters (m) to 191 meters. Approximately the upper 100 meters of cap rock were unsaturated by ground water. Within the saturated part of the cap rock, hydraulic heads generally decrease with depth and southwestward. Ion concentrations generally increase with depth in the saturated cap rock.
Hydraulic conductivity of cap rock, as determined from pumping tests, may be on the order of 5 x 10-3 meters per day; as a result, ground-water flow rates in the cap rock are probably very low. A carbon 14 specific activity for cap rock water yielded an uncorrected \"age\" of greater than 36,000 years.
