The city of Memphis, which is situated very close to the inferred epicenter of one of the three major 1811-1812 earthquakes, is in a potentially hazardous zone which will be susceptible to the usual seismic hazards. By recognizing the high level of seismicity in the New Madrid area, this study attempts to microzone the potential hazards in the city of Memphis.

This study examines the pertinent criteria necessary for any microzonation study. The subjects considered include:
(i) The seismicity of the central United States,
(ii) Design earthquakes,
(iii) Response analysis which allows us to construct the necessary microzonation maps.

The seismicity of the region is evaluated according to the state-of-the-art literature available as there is no recorded strong motion data available for the central U.S. The maximum credible earthquakes which are likely to affect Memphis are evaluated as the one in a thousand year occurrence. However, earthquakes of a lower intensity (and lower recurrence rates) are selected as design earthquakes to permit a more realistic microzonation to be performed.

For the response analysis, these earthquakes are simulated using synthetically generated accelerograms which exhibit the relevant parameters. These accelerograms displaying the significant characteristics of amplitude, predominant frequency and duration were selected to display, as accurately as possible, the anticipated nature of the horizontal bedrock-motions at Memphis. The horizontal motions (SH-waves) were applied at a depth of 45m below ground surface at numerous sites in the city of Memphis, where the soil stratigraphy had been conceptualized from borehole data.

The soils data made available by local sources was the only information used for this study as any laboratory testing was outside the scope of this study. The dynamic soil properties were thus established from the available Standard Penetration Resistances and soil classifications.

The results of the response analysis were transformed into microzonation maps depicting
(i) zones showing qualitative estimates of ground response,
(ii) zones showing the natural frequency of the soils,
(iii) zones showing the peak spectral acceleration for 2% damping ratio,
(iv) zones of liquefaction potential.

These maps are essentially useful for preliminary investigation and we do not expect them to be used on a quantitative basis. However, further investigation is necessary in determining the stratigraphy and soil properties to a more accurate level if an earthquake hazard is anticipated.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80914","usgsCitation":"Sharma, S., and Kovacs, W.D., 1980, The microzonation of the Memphis, Tennessee area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-914, vi, 129 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80914.","productDescription":"vi, 129 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403923,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0914/report.pdf"},{"id":156554,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0914/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","city":"Memphis area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.076904296875,\n              35.074964853989556\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.85992431640625,\n              35.074964853989556\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.85992431640625,\n              35.22318504970181\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.076904296875,\n              35.22318504970181\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.076904296875,\n              35.074964853989556\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a28f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sharma, Sunil","contributorId":81522,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sharma","given":"Sunil","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192053,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kovacs, William D.","contributorId":95096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kovacs","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The model area includes about 600 square miles in Paradise Valley and the adjoining Salt River Valley. In 1975 about 37,500 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation in the Salt River Indian Reservation. The proposed well field would withdraw as much as 45,000 acre-feet per year of additional irrigation water north of the Arizona Canal. The model was calibrated by using measured water-level declines for 1923-76 and simulated declines for 1946-75. The calibrated model was then used to predict water-level declines, based on projected amounts of pumpage, after 20 years of pumping. The rate of water-level decline would be an additional 2 to 6 feet per year in existing wells after 20 years of pumping in the proposed well field. The model was more sensitive to changes in pumpage distribution and in pumpage and recharge amounts than to changes in transmissivity and specific yield. These data were acquired in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as part of a study to determine potential geologic hazards or limitations to petroleum exploration or development on the northern Blake Plateau area. Fourteen lines were acquired perpendicular to the margin and were spaced about 25 km apart; two converging tie lines parallel the margin. The seismic-reflection profiles were placed to intersect similar seismic lines acquired in 1976 to 1977 on the Florida-Hatteras Shelf and inner Blake Plateau and to be tied to the offshore drill holes JOIDES 4 and 6 and ASP3. All acquired seismic-reflection data are of excellent quality, and for airgun data, penetration is to a depth equivalent to a two-way travel time of as much as 2.0 seconds.

Three acoustical energy sources were utilized simultaneously throughout the survey: two Bolt 40-in3 airguns were fired simultaneously at
10-s intervals at a pressure of 2,000 psi; a Teledyne sparker unit of 600 joules was activated at a repetition rate of 1.5 s; and a ORE 3.5-kHz-tuned transducer was used in an overside fish. Return signals from the airguns were gathered by a 300-m-long hydrophone array consisting of 200 elements, and a shorter 20-element array received the sparker signal. Towing speeds were maintained between 5 and 6 knots and the hydrophones were streamed at a depth of 4 to 5 m. Analog signals were recorded on magnetic tape and graphically on EPI recorders after passing through band-pass filters set for 150/300 Hz for the sparker system and 65/150 Hz for the airgun unit. Sweep rates were 0.5 s for the sparker and 1.0 and 2.0 s for airgun.

Navigation was by Loran-C (5-minute fix interval) and satellite.

The original data may be inspected at the offices of the U.S. Geological Survey in Woods Hole, MA 02 543. The results of a laboratory experiment are shown for comparison. A calibration procedure to determine detector efficiency is given for application to borehole probes. The hydrologic budget for this period showed a perennial yield of about 9,800 acre-feet per year and an annual ground-water discharge of about 11,400 acre-feet per year, comprising net pumpage of 7,100 acre-feet, phreatophyte evapotranspiration of 3,000 acre-feet, and base streamflow of 1 ,300 acre-feet. The base flow in San Antonio Creek could diminish to zero when net pumpage reaches 13,500 acre-feet per year. The environmentally sensitive marshland area of Barka Slough may then become stressed as water normally lost through evapotranspiration is captured by pumpage. The aquifer consists of alluvial valley fill that ranges in thickness from 0 to 3,500 feet. Ground water moves seaward from recharge areas along mountain fronts to a consolidated rock barrier about 5 miles east of the Pacific coast. Upwelling of ground water just east of the barrier has resulted in the 550-acre Barka Slough. Transmissivity of the aquifer ranges from 2,600 to 34,000 feet squared per day, with the lowest values occurring in the central part of the valley where the aquifer is thickest but probably finer grained. The salinity problems are increasing in the agricultural parts of the valley, which is east of the barrier. West of the barrier, stream and ground-water quality is poor, owing to seepage of saline water from the marine shale that underlies the area at shallow depths. A proposed basinwide monitoring program includes 17 water-level sites, 12 water-quality sampling sites, 3 streamflow measuring sites, and periodic infrared aerial photography of Barka Slough. A computer model of the ground-water flow system could be developed to assess the impact of various water-management alternatives.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80750","usgsCitation":"Hutchinson, C.B., 1980, Appraisal of ground-water resources in the San Antonio Creek Valley, Santa Barbara County, California (WRI/OFR): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-750, iv, 48 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80750.","productDescription":"iv, 48 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":52752,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0750/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":157478,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0750/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":405235,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11757.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"San Antonio Creek Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.678\n ],\n [\n -120.112,\n 34.678\n ],\n [\n -120.112,\n 34.853\n ],\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.853\n ],\n [\n -120.646,\n 34.678\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","edition":"WRI/OFR","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac6e4b07f02db67a394","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hutchinson, C. Regression analysis between estimated and measured precipitation at the lake showed that the accuracy of regionalization techniques is dependent on the closeness of the data network to the lake. For individual storms, the average-value method was found to be better than either the weighted average or isohyetal methods of determining precipitation, but it was least accurate in estimating 14-day average precipitation. The amount of evaporation calculated by the mass-transfer method ranged from 2 to 7 inches per month from July to October 1978, depending on the method used to determine the mass-transfer coefficient. Test drilling indicated that 30 to 150 feet of sand and gravel overlies till in the Williams Lake watershed. A sand lens about 50 feet thick occurs within the till.
\n
The configuration of the water table and vertical-head gradients measured from July to December 1978 indicate that ground water moves into the lake from the south and east and moves from the lake into the ground-water reservoir to the west. Preliminary numerical models indicate that the sand lens within the till is effectively isolated from the flow system interacting with the lake and that both inseepage and outseepage were about 1.4 inches from mid-July to mid-October 1978. When estimated as a residual in a water balance, ground water showed a net outseepage only of 1.47 inches.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/ofr80403","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Minnesota Department of Natural* Resources Division of Waters","usgsCitation":"Siegel, D., and Winter, T.C., 1980, Hydrologic setting of Williams Lake, Hubbard County, Minnesota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-403, vii, 56 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80403.","productDescription":"vii, 56 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":53576,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0403/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":406774,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25793.htm"},{"id":156479,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0403/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"Hubbard County","otherGeospatial":"Williams Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.67845916748047,\n              46.948152929705195\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.66163635253906,\n              46.948152929705195\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.66163635253906,\n              46.959870280492964\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.67845916748047,\n              46.959870280492964\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.67845916748047,\n              46.948152929705195\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a18e4b07f02db60547b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Siegel, Donald I.","contributorId":97499,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Siegel","given":"Donald I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192082,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Winter, Thomas C.","contributorId":84736,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winter","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192081,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Large-scale depletion of ground water is directly related to pumping that has occurred in the past few decades and is continuing today. The U.S. Geological Survey has started a 4-year study of the alluvial basins in south-central Arizona and parts of California, Nevada, and New Mexico. The study is designed to document and describe the hydrologic setting in the basins, the ground-water resources available, and the effects of historical development on the ground-water system. To aid in the study, mathematical models of selected basins will be developed for appraising the local and regional flow systems.

Major tasks necessary to accomplish the study objectives include accumulating existing data on ground-water quantity and quality, entering the data into a computer file, identifying data deficiencies, and developing a program to remedy the deficiencies by collection of additional data. The approach to the study will be to develop and calibrate models of selected basins for which sufficient data exist and then to develop interpretation-transfer techniques whereby general predevelopment and postdevelopment conceptual models of the hydrologic system in other basins may be synthesized. The results will be applied to selected basins for testing, calibration, and modification. The end result of the project will be a better definition of the hydrologic parameters and a better understanding of the workings of the hydrologic system in the alluvial basins. The results will include models that can be used to study the effects of management alternatives and water-resources development on the hydrologic system.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801197","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Anderson, T.W., 1980, Study plan for the regional aquifer-system analysis of alluvial basins in south-central Arizona and adjacent states: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1197, iv, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801197.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":399715,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1197/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":153606,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1197/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"south-central Arizona","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              31.259769987394286\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.09423828125,\n              31.259769987394286\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.09423828125,\n              36.2265501474709\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              36.2265501474709\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.85107421875,\n              31.259769987394286\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699ca1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, T.
