Included are estimates of low-flow frequency and flow duration at 7 gaging stations, low-flow frequency characteristics at 23 low-flow partial-record stations and 78 miscellaneous sites, and a list of base-flow discharge measurements at 29 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. (USGS)

This area , upgradient from and adjacent to the San Jacinto fault, contains a zone in an alluvial ground-water basin that is under artesian pressure. Since 1945, withdrawals have exceeded recharge and caused head declines of more than 100 feet. Artificial recharge of imported water in the upgradient areas may cause ground-water levels to rise, which could cause abandoned but unplugged wells to resume flowing. If so, structures could be damaged. A two-layer Galerkin finite-element digital model was used for predicting the rate and extent of the rise in water levels from 1975 to 2000. Six hydrologic conditions were modeled for the basin. Artificial recharge of one-half entitlement and full entitlement from the California Aqueduct were each coupled with low, average, and high natural recharge to the basin. According to model predictions, the greatest water level rises will be along the San Bernardino front. This area encompasses the artificial recharge sites and also has a thick section of unsaturated sediments for storing ground water. The formerly swampy lands between Warm Creek and the Santa Ana River adjacent to the San Jacinto fault have little additional storage capacity, and water levels could rise to the land surface as early as 1983 under maximum recharge conditions and 1970-74 average pumping conditions. If pumping rates are reduced in the Warm Creek area, water levels may rise to land surface prior to the dates predicted by the model, regardless of the artificial-recharge program. These dates, combined with fossil identifications and measured stratigraphic sections, provide significant insights into the history of glaciation, climatic change, and related events of late Quaternary time in the north-central Brooks Range.
Two dates from Tulunga Valley show that peat-forming intervals during the middle Wisconsin and during an earlier period were terminated by episodes of loess accretion that probably correspond to glaciations in the Brooks Range.
The Anayaknaurak Bluff exposure in Anaktuvuk Valley contains a weathered till of the Banded Mountain (Itkillik I) glaciation overlain by unweathered outwash gravel of Antler Valley (Itkillik II) age. Radiocarbon dates from finer alluvium above the outwash indicate that a subsequent glacial readvance north of the range front occurred shortly after 13,000 yr B.P. This event was synchronous with a major glacial readvance that culminated between about 12,900 and 12,700 yr B.P. farther east in the Atigun and Sagavanirktok Valleys.
Additional dates from Anaktuvuk Valley show that glacier ice had retreated from the Antler Valley end-moraine complex by 10,600 yr B.P. The elongate basin that formed behind the moraine dam was being filled by alluvium at this time, and filling continued as late as 6200 yr B.P. near the range front. A possible climatic reversal during this interval is suggested by dates from Anaktuvuk Valley and from Toolik Valley farther east, which show peat formation between about 9500 and 8200 yr B.P. followed by solifluction and fan-building.
Soil test pits and other excavations near Anaktuvuk Pass show that the pass was deglaciated some time prior to 7250 yr B.P., and was suitable for human habitation by at least 6500 yr B.P. Dated buried peat suggests a change to more severe frost climate sometime after about 4750 yr B.P.
Other dates from the Chandler Lake quadrangle bear mainly on formation of low (generally 2.5 to 6 m) river terraces during intervals of renewed glaciation at valley heads during the late Holocene. Neoglaciation in the north-central Brooks Range evidently began about 3500 yr B.P., or at least was perceptible by this time as increased loess influx to sites north of the range front. Stream alluviation was in progress 2800-2700 yr B.P. at sites near Anaktuvuk Pass, and continued until sometime after 2000 yr B.P. Final phases of alluviation began about 1200 and 450 yr B.P. Independent dating of cirque-glacier advances by lichenometry supports the alluvial chronology and suggests that alluviation was controlled largely by increased sediment yield to streams during times of cirque-glacier expansion and increased rock-glacier activity.

west-central Idaho","docAbstract":"The Payette River basin, characterized by steep, rugged mountains and narrow river valleys, occupies an area of about 3 ,300 square miles in west-central Idaho. Predominant rock types in the basin include granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith and basalt flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Waters from thermal springs in the basin, temperatures of which range from 34 to 86 degrees Celsius, are sodium bicarbonate types and are slightly alkaline. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 173 to 470 milligrams per liter. Reservoir temperatures determined from the sodium-potassium-calcium and silicic acid-corrected silica geothermometers range from 53 to 143 degrees Celsius. Tritium, present in concentrations between 0 and 2 tritium units, indicate sampled thermal waters are at least 100 years old and possibly more than 1,000 years old. Stable isotope data indicate it is unlikely any of the nonthermal waters sampled are representative of precipitation that recharges the thermal springs in the basin. Thermal springs discharged about 5,700 acre-feet of water in 1979. Associated convective heat flux is 1.1x10 to the 7th power calories per second. Major flooding was caused by three storms, one in June and two in July 1979, centered primarily in central and southern Indiana. Peak discharge exceeded the 100-year recurrence interval at 16 sites in this area. State Civil Defense officials estimated that almost 50-million dollars damage was attributable to the July floods. Hydrologic data have been tabulated for streamflow sites in the areas of flooding. Reservoir storage volumes, observation-well data, rainfall totals, and discharge hydrographs are presented to show the intensity and time of the storms and resultant floods. (USGS)
