The paper provides a broad overview of the current status and future challenges pertaining to the science, engineering, and applications of the GIC problem. Science is understood here as the basic space and Earth sciences research that allows improved understanding and physics-based modeling of the physical processes behind GIC. Engineering, in turn, is understood here as the “impact” aspect of GIC. Applications are understood as the models, tools, and activities that can provide actionable information to entities such as power systems operators for mitigating the effects of GIC and government agencies for managing any potential consequences from GIC impact to critical infrastructure. Applications can be considered the ultimate goal of our GIC work. In assessing the status of the field, we quantify the readiness of various applications in the mitigation context. We use the Applications Readiness Level (ARL) concept to carry out the quantification.
","language":"English","publisher":"AGU","doi":"10.1002/2016SW001501","usgsCitation":"Pulkkinen, A., Currently and historically, biodiversity data are scattered in numerous disconnected data silos that lack interoperability. The situation is no different for alien species data, and this obstructs efficient retrieval, combination, and use of these kinds of information for research and policy-making. Standardization and interoperability are particularly important as many alien species related research and policy activities require pooling data. We describe seven ways that data on alien species can be made more accessible and useful, based on the results of a European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) workshop: (1) Create data management plans; (2) Increase interoperability of information sources; (3) Document data through metadata; (4) Format data using existing standards; (5) Adopt controlled vocabularies; (6) Increase data availability; and (7) Ensure long-term data preservation. We identify four properties specific and integral to alien species data (species status, introduction pathway, degree of establishment, and impact mechanism) that are either missing from existing data standards or lack a recommended controlled vocabulary. Improved access to accurate, real-time and historical data will repay the long-term investment in data management infrastructure, by providing more accurate, timely and realistic assessments and analyses. If we improve core biodiversity data standards by developing their relevance to alien species, it will allow the automation of common activities regarding data processing in support of environmental policy. Furthermore, we call for considerable effort to maintain, update, standardize, archive, and aggregate datasets, to ensure proper valorization of alien species data and information before they become obsolete or lost.
","language":"English","publisher":"Frontiers","doi":"10.3389/fams.2017.00013","usgsCitation":"Groom, Q.J., Adriaens, T., Desmet, P., Simpson, A., De Wever, A., Bazos, I., To date, only nine non-mammalian papillomaviruses have been described from birds (n = 5), a fish (n = 1), a snake (n = 1), and turtles (n = 2). The identification of papillomaviruses in sauropsids and a sparid fish suggests that early ancestors of papillomaviruses were already infecting the earliest Euteleostomi. The Euteleostomi clade includes more than 90 per cent of the living vertebrate species, and progeny virus could have been passed on to all members of this clade, inhabiting virtually every habitat on the planet. As part of this study, we isolated a novel papillomavirus from a 16-year-old female Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) from Cape Crozier, Ross Island (Antarctica). The new papillomavirus shares ∼64 per cent genome-wide identity to a previously described Adélie penguin papillomavirus. Phylogenetic analyses show that the non-mammalian viruses (expect the python, Morelia spilota, associated papillomavirus) cluster near the base of the papillomavirus evolutionary tree. A papillomavirus isolated from an avian host (Northern fulmar; Fulmarus glacialis), like the two turtle papillomaviruses, lacks a putative E9 protein that is found in all other avian papillomaviruses. Furthermore, the Northern fulmar papillomavirus has an E7 more similar to the mammalian viruses than the other avian papillomaviruses. Typical E6 proteins of mammalian papillomaviruses have two Zinc finger motifs, whereas the sauropsid papillomaviruses only have one such motif. Furthermore, this motif is absent in the fish papillomavirus. Thus, it is highly likely that the most recent common ancestor of the mammalian and sauropsid papillomaviruses had a single motif E6. It appears that a motif duplication resulted in mammalian papillomaviruses having a double Zinc finger motif in E6. We estimated the divergence time between Northern fulmar-associated papillomavirus and the other Sauropsid papillomaviruses be to around 250 million years ago, during the Paleozoic-Mesozoic transition and our analysis dates the root of the papillomavirus tree between 400 and 600 million years ago. Our analysis shows evidence for niche adaptation and that these non-mammalian viruses have highly divergent E6 and E7 proteins, providing insights into the evolution of the early viral (onco-)proteins.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1093/ve/vex027","usgsCitation":"Van Doorslaer, K., Ruoppolo, V., Schmidt, A., Lescroel, A., Jongsomjit, D., Elrod, M., Kraberger, S., Stainton, D., Dugger, K.M., Ballard, G., Ainley, D.G., and Varsani, A., 2017, Unique genome organization of non-mammalian papillomaviruses provides insights into the evolution of viral early proteins: Virus Evolution, v. 3, no. 2, Article vex027; 12 p., https://doi.org/10.1093/ve/vex027.","productDescription":"Article vex027; 12 p.","ipdsId":"IP-087793","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":469718,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/ve/vex027","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":346996,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"3","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-10-06","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59e9b994e4b05fe04cd65c78","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Doorslaer, Koenraad","contributorId":197712,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Van Doorslaer","given":"Koenraad","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714128,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ruoppolo, Valeria","contributorId":197713,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ruoppolo","given":"Valeria","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714149,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Schmidt, Annie","contributorId":197714,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Annie","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714151,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lescroel, Amelie","contributorId":197715,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lescroel","given":"Amelie","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714152,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Jongsomjit, Dennis","contributorId":197716,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jongsomjit","given":"Dennis","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714153,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Elrod, Megan","contributorId":197717,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Elrod","given":"Megan","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714154,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Kraberger, Simona","contributorId":197730,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kraberger","given":"Simona","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714155,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Stainton, Daisy","contributorId":197731,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stainton","given":"Daisy","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714156,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Dugger, Katie M. 0000-0002-4148-246X","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4148-246X","contributorId":36037,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dugger","given":"Katie","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":517,"text":"Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":714157,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Ballard, Grant","contributorId":197700,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ballard","given":"Grant","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714158,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":10},{"text":"Ainley, David G.","contributorId":32039,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ainley","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":34154,"text":"Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Stinson Beach, CA","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":714159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":11},{"text":"Varsani, Arvind","contributorId":171722,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Varsani","given":"Arvind","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":12}]}}

The advantages of FCM in subsurface transport studies are that they are safe in tracer applications, negatively charged, easy to detect, chemically inert, and available in wide range of sizes. The limitations of FCM are that the quantities needed for some field transport studies can be prohibitively expensive and that their surface characteristics may not match the microorganisms of interest. These limitations may be ameliorated, in part by using chemically modified FCM so that their surface characteristics are a better match to that of the organisms. Also, more sensitive methods of detection may allow using smaller quantities of FCM. They play an important role in Arctic wetland ecosystems by regulating carbon, water, and energy fluxes and providing freshwater habitats. However, ponds, i.e., waterbodies with surface areas smaller than 1. 0 × 104 m2, have not been inventoried on global and regional scales. The Permafrost Region Pond and Lake (PeRL) database presents the results of a circum-Arctic effort to map ponds and lakes from modern (2002–2013) high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery with a resolution of 5 m or better. The database also includes historical imagery from 1948 to 1965 with a resolution of 6 m or better. PeRL includes 69 maps covering a wide range of environmental conditions from tundra to boreal regions and from continuous to discontinuous permafrost zones. Waterbody maps are linked to regional permafrost landscape maps which provide information on permafrost extent, ground ice volume, geology, and lithology. This paper describes waterbody classification and accuracy, and presents statistics of waterbody distribution for each site. Maps of permafrost landscapes in Alaska, Canada, and Russia are used to extrapolate waterbody statistics from the site level to regional landscape units. PeRL presents pond and lake estimates for a total area of 1. 4 × 106 km2 across the Arctic, about 17 % of the Arctic lowland ( <  300 m a.s.l.) land surface area. PeRL waterbodies with sizes of 1. 0 × 106 m2 down to 1. 0 × 102 m2 contributed up to 21 % to the total water fraction. Waterbody density ranged from 1. 0 × 10 to 9. 4 × 101 km−2. Ponds are the dominant waterbody type by number in all landscapes representing 45–99 % of the total waterbody number. The implementation of PeRL size distributions in land surface models will greatly improve the investigation and projection of surface inundation and carbon fluxes in permafrost lowlands. We evaluated the use of eDNA for standard fish monitoring surveys in a large reservoir. Specifically, we compared the presence, relative abundance, biomass, and relative percent composition of Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides and Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum measured through eDNA methods and established American Fisheries Society standard sampling methods for Theodore Roosevelt Lake, Arizona. Catches at electrofishing and gillnetting sites were compared with eDNA water samples at sites, within spatial strata, and over the entire reservoir. Gizzard Shad were detected at a higher percentage of sites with eDNA methods than with boat electrofishing in both spring and fall. In contrast, spring and fall gillnetting detected Gizzard Shad at more sites than eDNA. Boat electrofishing and gillnetting detected Largemouth Bass at more sites than eDNA; the exception was fall gillnetting, for which the number of sites of Largemouth Bass detection was equal to that for eDNA. We observed no relationship between relative abundance and biomass of Largemouth Bass and Gizzard Shad measured by established methods and eDNA copies at individual sites or lake sections. Reservoirwide catch composition for Largemouth Bass and Gizzard Shad (numbers and total weight [g] of fish) as determined through a combination of gear types (boat electrofishing plus gillnetting) was similar to the proportion of total eDNA copies from each species in spring and fall field sampling. However, no similarity existed between proportions of fish caught via spring and fall boat electrofishing and the proportion of total eDNA copies from each species. Our study suggests that eDNA field sampling protocols, filtration, DNA extraction, primer design, and DNA sequencing methods need further refinement and testing before incorporation into standard fish sampling surveys.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/02755947.2017.1342721","usgsCitation":"Perez, C.R., Bonar, S.A., Amberg, J., Ladell, B., Rees, C.B., Stewart, W.T., Gill, C.J., Cantrell, C., and Robinson, A., 2017, Comparison of American Fisheries Society (AFS) standard fish sampling techniques and environmental DNA for characterizing fish communities in a large reservoir: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 37, no. 5, p. 1010-1027, https://doi.org/10.1080/02755947.2017.1342721.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"1010","endPage":"1027","ipdsId":"IP-084602","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":347012,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Theodore Roosevelt Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.25785827636717,\n              33.63348744004515\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.95745086669922,\n              33.63348744004515\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.95745086669922,\n              33.77343983379775\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.25785827636717,\n              33.77343983379775\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.25785827636717,\n              33.63348744004515\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"37","issue":"5","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-07-05","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59e9b994e4b05fe04cd65c83","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perez, Christina R.","contributorId":197750,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Perez","given":"Christina","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714211,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bonar, Scott A. 0000-0003-3532-4067 sbonar@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3532-4067","contributorId":3712,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bonar","given":"Scott","email":"sbonar@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":714029,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Amberg, Jon J. jamberg@usgs.gov","contributorId":797,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Amberg","given":"Jon J.","email":"jamberg@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":714212,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Ladell, Bridget","contributorId":197751,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ladell","given":"Bridget","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714213,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Rees, Christopher B. crees@usgs.gov","contributorId":5500,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rees","given":"Christopher","email":"crees@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":714214,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Stewart, William T.","contributorId":197752,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stewart","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714215,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Gill, Curtis J.","contributorId":197753,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Gill","given":"Curtis","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714216,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Cantrell, Chris","contributorId":196762,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cantrell","given":"Chris","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714217,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Robinson, Anthony","contributorId":57480,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinson","given":"Anthony","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714218,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9}]}}

Total dissolved nitrogen inputs from four surface-water sources entering GSL were modeled during the 5-year study period (2010–2014) and ranged from 1.90 × 106 to 5.56 × 106 kg/year. The railroad causeway breach was a significant conduit for the export of dissolved nitrogen from Gilbert to Gunnison Bay, and in 2011 and 2012, net losses of total nitrogen mass from Gilbert Bay via the Causeway breach were 9.59 × 105 and 1.51 × 106 kg. Atmospheric deposition (wet + dry) was a significant source of nitrogen to Gilbert Bay, exceeding the dissolved nitrogen load contributed via the Farmington Bay causeway surface-water input by >100,000 kg during 2 years of the study. Closure of two railroad causeway culverts in 2012 and 2013 likely initiated a decreasing trend in the volume of the higher density Deep Brine Layer and associated declines in total dissolved nitrogen mass contained in this layer. The large dissolved nitrogen pool in Gilbert Bay relative to the amount of nitrogen contributed by surface-water inflow sources is consistent with the terminal nature of GSL and the predominance of internal nutrient cycling. The opening of the new railroad causeway breach in 2016 will likely facilitate more efficient bidirectional flow between Gilbert and Gunnison Bays, resulting in potentially substantial changes in nutrient pools within GSL.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s10498-017-9318-6","usgsCitation":"Naftz, D.L., 2017, Inputs and internal cycling of nitrogen to a causeway influenced, hypersaline lake, Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA: Aquatic Geochemistry, v. 23, no. 3, p. 199-216, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10498-017-9318-6.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"199","endPage":"216","ipdsId":"IP-055005","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":343552,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Great Salt Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -113.15917968749999,\n              40.63896734381723\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.8902587890625,\n              40.63896734381723\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.8902587890625,\n              41.72623044860004\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.15917968749999,\n              41.72623044860004\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.15917968749999,\n              40.63896734381723\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"23","issue":"3","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-06-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5965b1b8e4b0d1f9f05b379c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Naftz, David L. 0000-0003-1130-6892 dlnaftz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1130-6892","contributorId":1041,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Naftz","given":"David","email":"dlnaftz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":704095,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

When interbedded clay layers are present, the complexity is more pronounced because hydrate dissociation tends to occur preferentially in the sediments adjacent to the clay layers due to clay layers acting as a heat source. This would potentially lead to shearing deformation along the sand/clay contacts and may contribute to solid migration, which hindered past field-scale gas production tests. This paper presents a near-wellbore simulation of sand/clay interbedded hydrate-bearing sediments that have been subjected to depressurization and discusses the effect of clay layers on sand production.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceeding of the 9th International Conference on Gas Hydrates","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"9th International Conference on Gas Hydrates","conferenceDate":"June 25-30, 2017","conferenceLocation":"Denver, CO","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Uchida, S., Lin, J., Myshakin, E., Seol, Y., Collett, T.S., and Boswell, R., 2017, Numerical simulations of sand production in interbedded hydrate-bearing sediments during depressurization, in Proceeding of the 9th International Conference on Gas Hydrates, Denver, CO, June 25-30, 2017, 10 p.","productDescription":"10 p.","ipdsId":"IP-084858","costCenters":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":344336,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":344335,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.netl.doe.gov/File%20Library/Research/Oil-Gas/methane%20hydrates/Uchida-ICGH9-839-SUR1.pdf"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5979aa54e4b0ec1a488b8bfe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Uchida, Shun","contributorId":195142,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Uchida","given":"Shun","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":706347,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lin, Jeen-Shang","contributorId":195141,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lin","given":"Jeen-Shang","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":706348,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Myshakin, Evgeniy","contributorId":195140,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Myshakin","given":"Evgeniy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":706349,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Seol, Yongkoo","contributorId":195139,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Seol","given":"Yongkoo","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":706350,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Collett, Timothy S. 0000-0002-7598-4708 tcollett@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7598-4708","contributorId":1698,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Collett","given":"Timothy","email":"tcollett@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":706346,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Boswell, Ray","contributorId":195143,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Boswell","given":"Ray","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":706351,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

To monitor and quantify the surface dynamics of heterogeneous landscapes, high temporal and spatial resolution synthetic time series of albedo and the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were generated from the 500 m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) operational Collection V006 daily BRDF/NBAR/albedo products and 30 m Landsat 5 albedo and near-nadir reflectance data through the use of the Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (STARFM). The traditional Landsat Albedo (Shuai et al., 2011) makes use of the MODIS BRDF/Albedo products (MCD43) by assigning appropriate BRDFs from coincident MODIS products to each Landsat image to generate a 30 m Landsat albedo product for that acquisition date. The available cloud free Landsat 5 albedos (due to clouds, generated every 16 days at best) were used in conjunction with the daily MODIS albedos to determine the appropriate 30 m albedos for the intervening daily time steps in this study. These enhanced daily 30 m spatial resolution synthetic time series were then used to track albedo and vegetation phenology dynamics over three Ameriflux tower sites (Harvard Forest in 2007, Santa Rita in 2011 and Walker Branch in 2005). These Ameriflux sites were chosen as they are all quite nearby new towers coming on line for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and thus represent locations which will be served by spatially paired albedo measures in the near future. The availability of data from the NEON towers will greatly expand the sources of tower albedometer data available for evaluation of satellite products. At these three Ameriflux tower sites the synthetic time series of broadband shortwave albedos were evaluated using the tower albedo measurements with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) less than 0.013 and a bias within the range of ±0.006. These synthetic time series provide much greater spatial detail than the 500 m gridded MODIS data, especially over more heterogeneous surfaces, which improves the efforts to characterize and monitor the spatial variation across species and communities. The mean of the difference between maximum and minimum synthetic time series of albedo within the MODIS pixels over a subset of satellite data of Harvard Forest (16 km by 14 km) was as high as 0.2 during the snow-covered period and reduced to around 0.1 during the snow-free period. Similarly, we have used STARFM to also couple MODIS Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectances (NBAR) values with Landsat 5 reflectances to generate daily synthetic times series of NBAR and thus Enhanced Vegetation Index (NBAR-EVI) at a 30 m resolution. While normally STARFM is used with directional reflectances, the use of the view angle corrected daily MODIS NBAR values will provide more consistent time series. These synthetic times series of EVI are shown to capture seasonal vegetation dynamics with finer spatial and temporal details, especially over heterogeneous land surfaces.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.jag.2017.03.008","usgsCitation":"Wang, Z., Schaaf, C.B., Sun, Q., Kim, J., Erb, A.M., Gao, F., Roman, M.O., Yang, Y., Here, we compared the performance of band-tailed pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) species distribution models created using Maxent and derived from two separate presence-only occurrence data sources in New Mexico: 1) satellite tracked birds and 2) observations reported in eBird basic data set. Both models had good accuracy (test AUC > 0.8 and True Skill Statistic > 0.4), and high overlap between suitability scores (I statistic 0.786) and suitable habitat patches (relative rank 0.639). Our results suggest that, at the state-wide level, eBird occurrence data can effectively model similar species distributions as satellite tracking data. Climate change models for the band-tailed pigeon predict a 35% loss in area of suitable climate by 2070 if CO2 emissions drop to 1990 levels by 2100, and a 45% loss by 2070 if we continue current CO2 emission levels through the end of the century. Simple surrogate methods of estimating ET, if “calibrated” to direct measurements of ET, provide a reliable means to quantify ET. Eddy-covariance measurements of ET were made for 12 years (2004-2015) at an unimproved bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pasture in Florida. These measurements were compared to annual rainfall derived from rain gage data and monthly potential ET (PET) obtained from a long-term (since 1995) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) statewide, 2-kilometer, daily PET product. The annual proportion of ET to rainfall indicates a strong correlation (r2=0.86) to annual rainfall; the ratio increases linearly with decreasing rainfall. Monthly ET rates correlated closely (r2=0.84) to the USGS PET product. The results indicate that simple surrogate methods of estimating actual ET show positive potential in the humid Florida climate given the ready availability of historical rainfall and PET.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"2017 ASABE Annual International Meeting","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers","doi":"10.13031/aim.201700912","usgsCitation":"Sumner, D.M., Geurink, J.S., and Swancar, A., 2017, Use of eddy-covariance methods to \"calibrate\" simple estimators of evapotranspiration, in 2017 ASABE Annual International Meeting, https://doi.org/10.13031/aim.201700912.","ipdsId":"IP-086611","costCenters":[{"id":270,"text":"FLWSC-Tampa","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":344051,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59706fb5e4b0d1f9f065a880","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sumner, David M. 0000-0002-2144-9304 dmsumner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2144-9304","contributorId":1362,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sumner","given":"David","email":"dmsumner@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":156,"text":"Caribbean Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":270,"text":"FLWSC-Tampa","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":705539,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Geurink, Jeffrey S. 0000-0002-5354-1172","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5354-1172","contributorId":194870,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Geurink","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":705540,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Swancar, Amy aswancar@usgs.gov","contributorId":176289,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Swancar","given":"Amy","email":"aswancar@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":270,"text":"FLWSC-Tampa","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":705541,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

However, the effectiveness of BIA varies by species, the methodology continues to be refined, and incidental mortality rates are unknown. Under laboratory conditions we tested the value of using BIA in addition to morphological measurements such as total length and wet mass to estimate proximate composition (lipid, protein, ash, water, dry mass, energy density) in the endangered Humpback Chub Gila cypha and Bonytail G. elegans and the species of concern Roundtail Chub G. robusta and conducted separate trials to estimate the mortality rates of these sensitive species. Although Humpback and Roundtail Chub exhibited no or low mortality in response to taking BIA measurements versus handling for length and wet-mass measurements, Bonytails exhibited 14% and 47% mortality in the BIA and handling experiments, respectively, indicating that survival following stress is species specific. Derived BIA measurements were included in the best models for most proximate components; however, the added value of BIA as a predictor was marginal except in the absence of accurate wet-mass data. Bioelectrical impedance analysis improved the R2 of the best percentage-based models by no more than 4% relative to models based on morphology. Simulated field conditions indicated that BIA models became increasingly better than morphometric models at estimating proximate composition as the observation error around wet-mass measurements increased. Radio tags were implanted in 152 Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, and their movements monitored over 3 years. Ninety-six percent of tagged trout exhibited a lacustrine–adfluvial life history, migrating upstream a mean distance of 42.6 km to spawn, spending an average of 24 d in the Yellowstone River before returning to Yellowstone Lake. Once in the lake, complex postspawning movements were observed. Only 4% of radio-tagged trout exhibited a fluvial or fluvial–adfluvial life history. Low prevalence of fluvial and fluvial–adfluvial life histories was unexpected given the large size of the upper river drainage. Such indirect costs of predation risk have received increased attention in recent years, but the relative importance of direct vs. indirect predation costs to population growth (λ) across species remains unclear. We measured direct nest predation rates as well as indirect benefits (i.e., reduced predation rates) and costs (i.e., decreased reproductive output) arising from parental responses to perceived offspring predation risk for 10 songbird species breeding along natural gradients in nest predation risk. We show that reductions in seasonal fecundity from behavioral responses to perceived predation risk represent significant demographic costs for six of the 10 species. However, demographic costs from these indirect predation effects on seasonal fecundity comprised only 12% of cumulative predation costs averaged across species. In contrast, costs from direct predation mortality comprised 88% of cumulative predation costs averaged across species. Demographic costs from direct offspring predation were relatively more important for species with higher within-season residual-reproductive value (i.e., multiple-brooded species) than for species with lower residual-reproductive value (i.e., single-brooded species). Costs from indirect predation effects were significant across single- but not multiple-brooded species. Ultimately, demographic costs from behavioral responses to offspring predation risk differed among species as a function of their life-history strategies. Predicting mining activities on federal lands is difficult as current regulations do not require disclosure of exploration results. In these cases, historic mining claims may serve as a useful proxy for determining where mining-related activities may occur. We assess the utility of using a space–time cube (STC) and associated analyses to evaluate and characterize mining claim activities around the McDermitt Caldera in northern Nevada and southern Oregon. The most significant advantage of arranging the mining claim data into a STC is the ability to visualize and compare the data, which allows scientists to better understand patterns and results. Additional analyses of the STC (i.e., Trend, Emerging Hot Spot, Hot Spot, and Cluster and Outlier Analyses) provide extra insights into the data and may aid in predicting future mining claim activities.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s11053-017-9324-9","usgsCitation":"Coyan, J.A., Zientek, M.L., and Mihalasky, M.J., 2017, Spatiotemporal analysis of changes in lode mining claims around the McDermitt Caldera, northern Nevada and southern Oregon: Natural Resources Research, v. 26, no. 3, p. 319-337, https://doi.org/10.1007/s11053-017-9324-9.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"319","endPage":"337","ipdsId":"IP-081467","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":461467,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11053-017-9324-9","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":346970,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada, Oregon","otherGeospatial":"McDermitt Caldera","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.20190429687501,\n              41.64726212881368\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.81463623046875,\n              41.64726212881368\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.81463623046875,\n              42.09210825254959\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.20190429687501,\n              42.09210825254959\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.20190429687501,\n              41.64726212881368\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"26","issue":"3","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59e9b994e4b05fe04cd65c86","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coyan, Joshua A. 0000-0002-8450-7364 jcoyan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8450-7364","contributorId":197481,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coyan","given":"Joshua","email":"jcoyan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":713589,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zientek, Michael L. 0000-0002-8522-9626 mzientek@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8522-9626","contributorId":2420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zientek","given":"Michael","email":"mzientek@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":713591,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mihalasky, Mark J. 0000-0002-0082-3029 mjm@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0082-3029","contributorId":3692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mihalasky","given":"Mark","email":"mjm@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":662,"text":"Western Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":713590,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

However, fish are also the primary source of methylmercury exposure in humans. Selenium often co-occurs with mercury and there is some evidence that selenium can protect against mercury toxicity yet States issue fish consumption advisories based solely on the risks that methylmercury pose to human health. Recently, it has been suggested the selenium: mercury molar ratio be considered in risk management. In order for agencies to utilize the ratio to set consumption guidelines, it is important to evaluate the variability in selenium and mercury in different fish species. We examined 10 different freshwater fish species found within the Columbia River Basin in order to determine the inter- and intra-specific variability in the selenium: mercury molar ratios and the selenium health benefit values. We found significant variation in selenium: mercury molar ratios. The mean molar ratios for each species were all above 1:1, ranging from 3.42:1 in Walleye to 27.2:1 in Chinook salmon. There was a positive correlation between both mercury and selenium with length for each fish species apart from yellow perch and rainbow trout. All species had health benefit values greater than 2. We observed considerable variability in selenium: mercury molar ratios within fish species collected in the Columbia River Basin. Although incorporating selenium: mercury molar ratios into fish consumption holds the potential for refining advisories and assessing the risk of methylmercury exposure, the current understanding of how these ratios apply is insufficient, and further understanding of drivers of variability in the ratios is needed.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s12011-016-0907-9","usgsCitation":"Cusack, L.K., Eagles-Smith, C.A., Harding, A.K., Kile, M., and Stone, D., 2017, Selenium: Mercury molar ratios in freshwater fish in the Columbia River Basin: Potential applications for specific fish consumption advisories: Biological Trace Element Research, v. 178, no. 1, p. 136-146, https://doi.org/10.1007/s12011-016-0907-9.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"136","endPage":"146","ipdsId":"IP-081806","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":34983,"text":"Contaminant Biology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":345642,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"178","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-12-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59b8f21ee4b08b1644e0aee0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cusack, Leanne K.","contributorId":196356,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Cusack","given":"Leanne","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710141,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Eagles-Smith, Collin A. 0000-0003-1329-5285 ceagles-smith@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1329-5285","contributorId":505,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eagles-Smith","given":"Collin","email":"ceagles-smith@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":710142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Harding, Anna K.","contributorId":170035,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Harding","given":"Anna","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710143,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kile, Molly","contributorId":196357,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kile","given":"Molly","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Stone, Dave","contributorId":196358,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stone","given":"Dave","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":710145,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

However, the use of prescribed fire in the mesic forested environments and the densely populated regions of the eastern United States has been limited. The objective of our research was to develop a science-based approach to prioritizing the use of prescribed fire in appropriate forest types in the eastern United States based on a set of desired management outcomes. Through a process of expert elicitation and data analysis, we assessed and integrated recent vegetation community mapping results along with other available spatial data layers into a spatial prioritization tool for prescribed fire planning at Shenandoah National Park (Virginia, USA). The integration of vegetation spatial data allowed for development of per-pixel priority rankings and exclusion areas enabling precise targeting of fire management activities on the ground, as well as a park-wide ranking of fire planning compartments. We demonstrate the use and evaluation of this approach through implementation and monitoring of a prescribed burn and show that progress is being made toward desired conditions. Integration of spatial data into the fire planning process has served as a collaborative tool for the implementation of prescribed fire projects, which assures projects will be planned in the most appropriate areas to meet objectives that are supported by current science.
","language":"English","publisher":"Natural Areas Association","doi":"10.3375/043.037.0312","usgsCitation":"Young, J.A., Mahan, C.G., and Forder, M., 2017, Integration of vegetation community spatial data into a prescribed fire planning process at Shenandoah National Park, Virginia (USA): Natural Areas Journal, v. 37, no. 3, p. 394-405, https://doi.org/10.3375/043.037.0312.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"394","endPage":"405","ipdsId":"IP-066214","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":352864,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Shenandoah National Park","volume":"37","issue":"3","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":10,"text":"Baltimore PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5afee854e4b0da30c1bfc426","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Young, John A. 0000-0002-4500-3673 jyoung@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4500-3673","contributorId":3777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Young","given":"John","email":"jyoung@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":707326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mahan, Carolyn G.","contributorId":146582,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Mahan","given":"Carolyn","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":12754,"text":"Penn State University Altoona","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":707327,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Forder, Melissa","contributorId":195517,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Forder","given":"Melissa","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":707328,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

By using more than 3000 species and nearly 2.4 million trees across 24 forest plots worldwide, we show that global patterns in tree species diversity reflect not only stronger CNDD at tropical versus temperate latitudes but also a latitudinal shift in the relationship between CNDD and species abundance. CNDD was stronger for rare species at tropical versus temperate latitudes, potentially causing the persistence of greater numbers of rare species in the tropics. Circumstances special to this case include (1) the sensitivity of an isolated resort area to media hype of potential high-impact volcanic and earthquake hazards and its impact on potential recreational visitors and the local economy, (2) a small permanent population (~8000), which facilitates face-to-face communication between scientists monitoring the hazard, civil authorities, and the public, and (3) the relatively frequent turnover of people in positions of civil authority, which requires a continuing education effort on the nature of caldera unrest and related hazards. Because of delays associated with communication protocols between the State and Federal governments during the onset of unrest, local civil authorities and the public first learned that the U.S. Geological Survey was about to release a notice of potential volcanic hazards associated with earthquake activity and 25-cm uplift of the resurgent dome in the center of the caldera through an article in the Los Angeles Times published in May 1982. The immediate reaction was outrage and denial. Gradual acceptance that the hazard was real required over a decade of frequent meetings between scientists and civil authorities together with public presentations underscored by frequently felt earthquakes and the onset of magmatic CO2 emissions in 1990 following a 11-month long earthquake swarm beneath Mammoth Mountain on the southwest rim of the caldera. Four fatalities, one on 24 May 1998 and three on 6 April 2006, underscored the hazard posed by the CO2 emissions. Initial response plans developed by county and state agencies in response to the volcanic unrest began with “The Mono County Volcano Contingency Plan” and “Plan Caldera” by the California Office of Emergency Services in 1982–84. They subsequently became integrated in the regularly updated County Emergency Operation Plan. The alert level system employed by the USGS also evolved from the three-level “Notice-Watch-Warning” system of the early 1980s through a five level color-code to the current “Normal-Advisory-Watch-Warning” ground-based system in conjunction with the international 4-level aviation color-code for volcanic ash hazards. Field trips led by the scientists proved to be a particularly effective means of acquainting local residents and officials with the geologically active environment in which they reside. Relative caldera quiescence from 2000 through 2011 required continued efforts to remind an evolving population that the hazards posed by the 1980–2000 unrest persisted. Renewed uplift of the resurgent dome from 2011 to 2014 was accompanied by an increase in low-level earthquake activity in the caldera and beneath Mammoth Mountain and continues through May 2016. As unrest levels continue to wax and wane, so will the communication challenges.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Advances in volcanology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/11157_2016_32","usgsCitation":"Hill, D.P., Mangan, M.T., and McNutt, S.R., 2017, Volcanic unrest and hazard communication in Long Valley Volcanic Region, California, chap. of Advances in volcanology, p. 1-17, https://doi.org/10.1007/11157_2016_32.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"17","ipdsId":"IP-071037","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":487574,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/11157_2016_32","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":343442,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-03-26","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"595f4c3ae4b0d1f9f057e321","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hill, David P. hill@usgs.gov","contributorId":2600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill","given":"David","email":"hill@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":703647,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mangan, Margaret T. 0000-0002-5273-8053 mmangan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5273-8053","contributorId":3343,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mangan","given":"Margaret","email":"mmangan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":703648,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"McNutt, Stephen R.","contributorId":38133,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McNutt","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":703649,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

However, based on concentration alone, it can be difficult to identify which compounds may be of toxicological concern and should be prioritized for further monitoring, in-depth testing, or management. This can be problematic because toxicological characterization is lacking for many emerging contaminants. New sources of high-throughput screening (HTS) data, such as the ToxCast database, which contains information for over 9000 compounds screened through up to 1100 bioassays, are now available. Integrated analysis of chemical occurrence data with HTS data offers new opportunities to prioritize chemicals, sites, or biological effects for further investigation based on concentrations detected in the environment linked to relative potencies in pathway-based bioassays. As a case study, chemical occurrence data from a 2012 study in the Great Lakes Basin along with the ToxCast effects database were used to calculate exposure–activity ratios (EARs) as a prioritization tool. Technical considerations of data processing and use of the ToxCast database are presented and discussed. EAR prioritization identified multiple sites, biological pathways, and chemicals that warrant further investigation. Prioritized bioactivities from the EAR analysis were linked to discrete adverse outcome pathways to identify potential adverse outcomes and biomarkers for use in subsequent monitoring efforts.
","language":"English","publisher":"ACS","doi":"10.1021/acs.est.7b01613","usgsCitation":"Blackwell, B., Ankley, G., Corsi, S., DeCicco, L.A., Houck, K., Judson, R.S., Li, S., Martin, M.T., Murphy, E., Schroeder, A.L., Smith, E., Swintek, J., and Villeneuve, D.L., 2017, An “EAR” on environmental surveillance and monitoring: A case study on the use of Exposure–Activity Ratios (EARs) to prioritize sites, chemicals, and bioactivities of concern in Great Lakes waters: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 51, no. 15, p. 8713-8724, https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.7b01613.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"8713","endPage":"8724","ipdsId":"IP-088064","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":469709,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/6132252","text":"External Repository"},{"id":346899,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Great Lakes","volume":"51","issue":"15","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-07-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59e86835e4b05fe04cd4d1f0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Blackwell, Brett R.","contributorId":173601,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Blackwell","given":"Brett R.","affiliations":[{"id":6914,"text":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":713482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ankley, Gerald T.","contributorId":177970,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ankley","given":"Gerald T.","affiliations":[{"id":13485,"text":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Duluth, MN","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":713483,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Corsi, Steven R. 0000-0003-0583-5536 srcorsi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0583-5536","contributorId":172002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corsi","given":"Steven R.","email":"srcorsi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":713481,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"DeCicco, Laura A. 0000-0002-3915-9487 ldecicco@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3915-9487","contributorId":174716,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"DeCicco","given":"Laura","email":"ldecicco@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":37947,"text":"Upper Midwest Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":160,"text":"Center for Integrated Data Analytics","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5054,"text":"Office of Water Information","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":713484,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Houck, Kieth A.","contributorId":197428,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Houck","given":"Kieth A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713485,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Judson, Richard S.","contributorId":197429,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Judson","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713486,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Li, Shibin","contributorId":197430,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Li","given":"Shibin","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713487,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Martin, Matthew T.","contributorId":197431,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Martin","given":"Matthew","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713488,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Murphy, Elizabeth","contributorId":197432,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Murphy","given":"Elizabeth","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":713489,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9},{"text":"Schroeder, Anthony L.","contributorId":173596,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schroeder","given":"Anthony","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":12503,"text":"University of Minnesota -
