A small stream (2.2 square miles drainage area) receiving leachate from a landfill was studied from August through November 1979 to determine the impact of the leachate on water quality. The presence of un-ionized ammonia, considered toxic to some aquatic vertebrates, was indicated in samples taken from sections of the stream affected by leachate. Some dissolved oxygen values did not meet the criteria for the protection of aquatic life. Many other dissolved constituents were present in elevated concentrations in the leachate-influenced reaches of the stream. Flow-data comparisons indicate that streamflow less than that observed will occur approximately 20 percent of the time. Leachate-affected stream conditions may deteriorate further during such low streamflow. Several areas with the potential for large sediment yields are present in the basin.

The Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources, expanded the existing gaging-station network in the San Antonio metropolitan area in May 1968 to begin urban hydrology studies in this area. In September 1968, the program was further expanded to include the collection of water-quality data.
The operation and maintenance of stations 08178000, San Antonio River at San Antonio; 08178700, Salado Creek (upper station) at San Antonio; and 08178800, Salado Creek (lower station) at San Antonio are funded by the San Antonio River Authority in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The operation and maintenance and collection of water-quality data at station 08178640, West Elm Creek at San Antonio, and station 08178645, East Elm Creek at San Antonio are funded by the Edwards Underground Water District in cooperation with the Texas Department of Water Resources and the U.S. Geological Survey. These stations will provide hydrologic data on similar and adjacent drainage basins. One drainage basin is undergoing extensive urbanization while the other is undeveloped.

The division is based on hydrologic factors, location, size, and mining activity. Hydrologic units (drainage basins) or parts of units are combined to form each area. Area 23 is located at the southern end of the Eastern Coal Province, in the Mobile River basin, includes the Warrior, Cahaba, and edges of the Plateau coal fields in Alabama, and covers an area of 4,716 square miles. It is underlain by the Coker and Pottsville Formations and the pre-Pennsylvanian rocks. The Pottsville Formation contains coal beds and is overlain by the Coker Formation in the western and southern parts of the area. The pre-Pennsylvanian rocks crop out in two northeast-southwest trending belts or ridges along and near the eastern boundary where folding and faulting is common. The outcrop of rocks along the western ridge forms the divide between the Warrior and the Cahaba coal fields. Hydrologic problems relating to surface mining are (1) erosion and sedimentation, (2) decline in ground-water levels, and (3) degradation of water quality. Average annual sediment yields can increase by four magnitudes in surface mined areas from 20 tons per square mile per year from areas not affected by mining to 300,000 tons per square mile per year from mined areas. Sediment yields increase drastically when vegetation is removed from the highly erosive soils and from unregulated surface mining operations. Decline in ground-water levels can occur in and near surface-mining areas when excavation extends below the static water level in the aquifer. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. The standard error of estimate for the 7-day 10-year low flow ranged from 6% to 76% depending on the type of data available. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method.

Geologic and hydrologic data were combined with water-quality data to develop an understanding of factors affecting present and future groundwater quality. Samples were analyzed for 16 major chemical constituents, selected metallic trace elements, pH, specific conductance, water temperature, and total- and fecal-coliform bacteria. Locally, concentrations of dissolved solids, nitrite plus nitrate, iron, and cadmium exceeded mandatory or recommended limits established for public water supplies. Hardness exceeding 300 milligrams per liter may restrict groundwater use esthetically or economically. Groundwater quality is adequate and quantity is sufficient to meet population and economic demands as of 1978.

The purpose of the experiment was to define the crustal structure of the Kona coast and its relationship to the tectonics of Mauna Loa volcano. This open-file report describes the experiment and presents the data without interpretation. A similar experiment was performed earlier off the southeast coast of Hawaii. Those data are described in Zucca and others (1979) and the results presented in Zucca and Hill (1980).

To evaluate the impact of large-scale recharge with reclaimed water on groundwater quality, the U.S. Geological Survey has collected hydrologic and water-quality data from a 1-square-mile area around the recharge site to provide a basis for future comparison. Extensive chemical and microbiological analyses are being made on samples from 48 wells screened in the upper glacial (water-table) aquifer and the upper part of the underlying Magothy (public-supply) aquifer. Preliminary results indicate that water from the upper glacial aquifer contains significant concentrations of nitrate and low-molecular-weight chlorinated hydrocarbons and detectable concentrations of organochlorine insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls. At present, no fecal contamination is evident in either aquifer in the area studied. In the few samples containing fecal indicator bacteria, the numbers were low. Nonpoint sources provide significant loads of organic and inorganic compounds; major sources include cesspool and septic-tank effluent, cesspool and septic-tank cleaners and other over-the-counter domestic organic solvents, fertilizers, insecticides for termite and other pest control, and stormwater runoff to recharge basins. The water-table aquifer is composed mainly of stratified, well-sorted sand and gravel and, as a result, is highly permeable. In the 1-square-mile area studied, some contaminants seem to have traveled 200 feet downward to the bottom of the water-table aquifer and into the upper part of the public-supply aquifer. Ground water occurs in several aquifers that are made up of one or more formations; the composite stratigraphic column indicates the relative position of the formations. The main sources of ground water are the Coconino aquifer, the Chinle Formation. the N and D aquifers, the Toreva and Bidahochi Formations, and the alluvium. The aquifers are separated by fine-grained rock units that inhibit the vertical movement of ground water.
Ground-water development has been slight, and the water is used mainly for public, domestic, and livestock supplies. In 1977 about 425 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn in the Hopi area. The amount of ground water withdrawn annually is small compared to the potential recharge from precipitation; therefore, water levels generally are not affected by pumping from wells.
Because the ground-water system in the Hopi area has not been changed greatly by development, a large number of water-level measurements and water-quality data collected prior to 1977 are used in this report to show conditions in 1977. A few water-level measurements were made south of the Navajo Indian Reservation boundary in 1977.

The flood profile, computed from high-water marks, was 25 feet above that for medium flow near the downstream end of the reach and decreased uniformly to 7 feet above medium flow at the upstream end. Overbank areas inundated averaged about a mile in width throughout the reach and caused damage to residential areas of the towns of Packwood and Randle. The peak discharge at the downstream end of the reach, was 89,300 cu ft/s and was the largest that occurred in a 30-year period of record. The peak discharge at the upstream end of the reach was 36,200 cu ft/s and was the second largest that occurred in a 49-year period of record; the largest peak discharge observed occurred on December 21, 1933, and was 36,600 cu ft/s. The recurrence interval for the December 2-3, 1977 flood, computed from a frequency analyses of recorded peak discharges, was greater than 100 years at the downstream end of the reach and about 45 years at the upstream end. The 100-year flood at the respective reach ends would have a peak discharge of about 82,500 cu ft/s and about 43,000 cu ft/s.
