The numerous bluffs along the Koyukuk River and its tributaries expose drift sheets of the late Pleistocene Itkillik I glacial phase (table 1), and outwash and other proglacial deposits of the succeeding Itkillik II phase. During Itkillik I time, glaciers flowed south through virtually all of the valleys of the south-central Brooks Range to terminate in piedmont lobes within the Koyukuk lowland (Hamilton, 1978, 1979a). Outwash covered the Koyukuk Valley floor beyond the ice limits. Glaciers of Itkillik II age were more restricted; the largest reached positions near the south margin of the range, but many mountain valleys of the Wiseman quadrangle remained unglaciated. Lower alluvial terraces of Holocene age record alternating episodes of aggradation and soil development. The SRO systems have extended both the range and resolution of seismic measurements beyond the limits of conventional seismographs and the data are recorded in digital format making it convenient to automate processing and analysis. The SRO network now comprises 12 stations and one additional station will be installed. The data produced by the SRO network, and other digital systems being installed to supplement the SRO network, will be collected by the U.S. Geological Survey's Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory, organized into network-day tapes, and made available to research organizations throughout the world. The network-day tapes are particularly unique and useful data files as they will contain not only seismic data but all of the information needed by an analyst to interpret the data, including station constants and calibration and other instrumental parameters. Hoffman (in preperation) describe these tapes and the format used in their compilation. </p><p>The global digital data base for seismology is still relatively limited in terms of both geographical and temporal coverage. For this reason there is a tendency, perhaps, to stretch the applicability of the available data beyond the intended purposes. The danger in this is compounded by the fact that computer processing and analysis often can be done without even looking at the waveforms, and it is done with deceptively high computational precision that belies the basic accuracy of the measurements. The day may be passing when seismologists have a hands-on familiarity with the data acquisition systems, but clearly it is as important as ever that they have a knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the instruments. </p><p>The primary objective of the SRO network was to lower the threshold of event detection in the long-period band. This was achieved by using a newly-developed borehole seismometer that is capable of resolving both vertical and horizontal components of earth background noise at the quietest sites on earth. Another objective was to accommodate a large range of signla amplitudes. This was achieved by using an advanced digital recording systems which provides at least 110 dB of separation between system noise levels and clipping levels in the principal bands of interest. The broadband capability was not an initial program requirement and is not being fully utilized at present, but it adds significantly to the research potential of the network. The SRO systems have proven to be reliable in operation and the general quality of the data is excellent. </p><p>Every seismograph has functional limits of accuracy, and the SRO system is no exception. The chief purpose of this report is to define these limits for the SRO system and provide the most accurate calibration data currently available. At the same time we will describe the testing program in sufficient detail so that the data user can make his own judgments regarding the effectiveness and accuracy of the tests. This report is not a final statement; further work is needed in some areas to completely define the SRO system, in some cases purely for academic reasons. Most of the resources occur in veins that have an average grade of between 0.1 and 2.0 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>. More than 200 thorium-bearing veins have been mapped in this district (Staatz, 1979, p. A34).</p><p>The Lemhi Pass thorium district lies astride the Continental Divide in the east-central part of the Beaverhead Mountains along the Idaho-Montana State line. Although the area in which thorium veins are found covers more than 150 square miles, the drilling project was confined to three veins in the northwestern part of this district on the Montana side of the Continental Divide (fig. 1). An unimproved dirt road that crosses the Continental Divide at Lemhi Pass furnishes access to the drilling area. This road connects Idaho State Highway 28 at Tendoy, Idaho, 13 miles west of Lemhi Pass, with Interstate Highway 15 at the Clark Canyon reservoir/dam, 31.5 miles east of Lemhi Pass. Salmon, Idaho, the principal town to the west, is 19 miles northwest of Tendoy; and Dillon, Mont., the principal town to the east, is 18 miles northeast of Clark Canyon Reservoir.<br></p><p>The drilling project was proposed by the Department of Energy headquarters personnel in Washington, D.C., during the spring of 1978. The purpose of the project was to demonstrate downward extension of the veins. Drilling was proposed to indicate whether several veins had a depth of 500 feet or more.</p><p>Little exploration has been carried out on thorium veins. The lack of a ready market for thorium has resulted in little economic incentive for exploration. At the present time this work is still very much a research effort focused largely on earthquake occurrence within the San Andreas fault system and related faults in California. Major aspects of this research include 1) studies of the spatial-temporal patterns of earthquake occurrence as a basis for recognizing distinctive sequences of events that may precede moderate-to-large earthquakes, 2) studies of Earth structure as a basis for the accurate location of earthquake hypocenters and understanding the physical properties and state of active fault zones, and 3) studies of the earthquake source mechanisms as a basis for recognizing possible variations in stress-drop, rupture direction, and so on that may precede moderate-to-large Samples were collected monthly and during periods of storm runoff from December 1976 through July 1978. Concentrations of chemical constituents relevant to agricultural practices were found to be low, even during periods of storm runoff. Concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus ranged from 0.30 to 1.60 and 0.01 to 0.42 milligrams per liter, respectively. Copper, arsenic, lead, mercury, and zinc concentrations were low and did not exceed Georgia Department of Natural Resources (1977) or U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1977) standards for safe drinking water. Concentrations of suspended sediment and total nitrogen were found to remain relatively constant over a wide range of water discharge. Concentrations of total phosphorus showed a better relation to water discharge at Little River near Lenox than at Spring Creek near Iron City. Dissolved—solids concentrations in both streams generally decreased with an increase in water discharge. Average annual yields of selected constituents were low. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus yields were 0.60 to 0.63 and 0.04 to 0.06 tons per year per square mile in Little River and Spring Creek basins. Atrazine, butylate, and ethroprop pesticides were detected in concentrations up to 0.91 micrograms per liter in storm— runoff samples collected during the active farming A prominent reflector found at 27 m below the mudline (water depths 7-9 m) has a negative reflection coefficient greater than 0.5. The large acoustic impedance contrast, coupled with a report of gas encountered at a corresponding depth in a nearby drillhole, shows that the reflector is the upper boundary of a zone containing gas. The gas exists in sandy gravel capped by stiff, silty clay. Analysis of unprocessed conventional high-resolution records from the region indicates that the gas-bearing layer may extend over an area of at least 50 km at depths of 19-35 m below the mudline. Similar-appearing reflectors, previously unexplained, occur in patches over wide regions of the shelf where offshore oil development is beginning at a rapid pace.
