Included are estimates of low-flow frequency at 10 gaging stations, flow duration at 8 gaging stations, and low-flow frequency characteristics at 13 low-flow partial-record stations and 81 miscellaneous sites. Equations are provided to estimate low-flow characteristics at ungaged sites and at sites where one base-flow discharge measurement is available. The equations were determined from multiple-regression analyses that related low-flow characteristics at gaging stations and low-flow partial-record stations to basin characteristics. The standard error of estimate is provided for each method of estimating the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 2 years and once in 10 years. The standard error of estimate for the 7-day 10-year low flow ranged from 9% to 113% depending on the type of data available. Standard error provides the user with the expected degree of accuracy for each method. A method is described for estimating background phosphorus concentration in lakes of the Puget Sound lowland, Washington. Using a mass-balance ' Vollenweider-type ' model, phosphorus loadings were calculated from present-day phosphorus concentrations measured in lake water and from easily measured physical characteristics for 24 lakes in undeveloped, or insignificantly developed, watersheds. Phosphorus loading from forest (undeveloped) land was derived for each lake as the difference between the calculated phosphorus loading directly to the lake 's surface and loading by bulk precipitation (estimated from other studies). Forest-land loading to each lake was converted to the yield (mass per unit area) of the forested part of the watershed. The phosphorus yield from forest land was related to annual runoff, and the regression equation expressing this relationship explained 73% of the sample variance. By applying that regression equation to the appropriate annual-runoff data, the yield of phosphorus from forest land can be estimated for any lake in the study area. Phosphorus loading from forested land then can be added to direct loading by bulk precipitation to estimate background phosphorus loading for each lake. By applying the mass-balance model to calculated background loadings, background total-phosphorus concentration can also be calculated for all lakes in the study area that have stable thermal stratification during the summer. The standard error of estimate for calculated background loadings and concentrations averages about 25%. Two of the holes were partially cored. The purpose of the drilling was to obtain information on the thickness, quality, and extent of the coal in the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale, and on the lithology of the surrounding rocks. Core samples were obtained to be used for coal quality and trace element analyses. The Ogallala aquifer, which consists of unconsolidated sand, gravel, and clay, is the principal source of ground water in Texas County. Saturated thickness ranged from 0 feet to over 600 feet. The estimated value used for specific yield in most of the areas was 0.15 but 0.05 was used in some places. Hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0 to more than 200 feet per day, and recharge ranged from 0.2 to 2.2 inches per year.</p><p>Irrigation pumpage was estimated using crop acreage and estimate of irrigation requirements. For projection simulations with large stress, a reasonable maximum stress using a minimum of 4 wells per square mile and 1972 pumping rate per well, if saturated thickness was more than 38 feet, was used.</p><p>Four types of boundaries were used in the model. They are:</p><p><ol><li>A zero-flux (impermeable) boundary on the perimeter of the modeled area.<br></li><li>A constant-head boundary for a reach of the Cimarron River.<br></li><li>A boundary which is a constant-head boundary initially but converts to an impermeable boundary (depending on the potentiometric gradient at the boundary) for a reach of Beaver River, Palo Duro Creek, and south of Palo Duro Creek.<br></li><li>A boundary which is a partially penetrating stream with leaky-stream bed for parts of Beaver River and Coldwater Creek.<br></li></ol></p><p>The base period for calibration was 1966. The model was calibrated by a simulation from 1966 to 1968 in which pumpage was modified until the 1968 calculated heads matched closely the 1968 observed heads. The model was verified by a simulation from 1966 to 1972, using the 1966 to 1972 pumpage stress, in order to determine the degree of conformity between 1972 calculated heads and 1972 observed heads. The samples were collected during reconnaissance geochemical studies as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Alaskan Mineral Resource Assessment Program. The transition zone between freshwater and saltwater is represented in this report by a series of maps showing the depths to chloride concentrations of 250, 1,000, 10,000, and 18,000 milligrams per liter. The maps are based on chloride concentrations obtained from self-potential logs as well as from water-quality analyses. </p><p>Depths to the designated chloride concentrations generally increase inland from the coast except in New Jersey where they are greatest along the coast and in North Carolina where depths to the 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter concentrations are greatest beneath Pamlico Sound. The transition zone between 250 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride is generally 1,500 to 2,300 feet thick except in part of North Carolina, where it is less than 1,000 feet. </p><p>Depths to 250 and 1,000 milligrams per liter of chloride are probably controlled by the natural flow pattern of fresh ground water. Areas where these concentrations are relatively shallow generally coincide with areas of natural ground-water discharge. Depths to 10,000 and 18,000 milligrams per liter of chloride, and the occurrence offshore of ground water that is fresher than seawater, is attributed to long-term hydrologic conditions during which sea level fluctuations of a few hundred feet recurred several times. The present water supplies for these communities are not always adequate to meet current demands. The U.S. Geological Survey made a water-supply assessment of the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which is investigating and evaluating alternative sources of water for the communities. Recharge to the aquifer is mostly in the western and southwestern parts of the study area. Groundwater movement is generally from the southwest to northeast. Groundwater discharge in the study area is primarily by pumping wells. Since 1961, this pumping has caused water-level declines of about 250 to 300 feet from Broomfield to east of Erie, Colorado. Generally, water levels in other parts of the area have remained the same. The aggregate sand thickness determined from well logs ranges from 42 to 360 feet and the mean thickness is 229 feet. The volume of groundwater in storage in the study area is about 5 million acre-feet. Reported yields from 93 wells ranged from 1 to 90 gallons per minute and averaged 22 gallons per minute. Well yields tended to be larger in the areas where aggregate sand thickness is the greatest. The water generally changes from a sodium calcium bicarbonate type to a sodium calcium sulfate type as it moves through the aquifer away from the recharge areas.
