The study consists of coordinated geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies with the objective of evaluating the potential for mineral deposits in the area. The geochemical survey consists of the collection of bulk stream sediments which are analyzed for 31 elements using wet chemical and semiquantitative emission spectrographic techniques. He described a new zeolite, erionite, from a small opal quarry in a \"rhyolite\" (welded ash-flow tuff) about 6 km southeast of Durkee. Eakle, unfortunately, provided only a vague description of the type locality of erionite; and more than half a century passed before the type locality was rediscovered by L. W. Staples, and additional specimens were compared with Eakle's original material (Staples and Gard, 1959). Prior to the late 1950's, the Durkee locality was the only confirmed occurrence of erionite in the world.</p><p>Our investigation of the zeolites and the diagenesis of tuffaceous rocks near Durkee began late in 1970 after a brief reconnaissance early in that year showed an abundance and variety of authigenic zeolites in silicic tuffs of the lacustrine deposit. Field studies continued intermittently until 1972, and laboratory studies continued intermittently until 1976. Preliminary findings have been published in two brief reports (Sheppard and Gude, 1975; Gude and Sheppard, 1978). The number of samples from each State are: Pennsylvania, 132; Ohio, 101; Maryland, 25; West Virginia, 254; Virginia, 33; Indiana, 49; Massachusetts, 5; and Rhode Island, 10. The analytic data are filed in the National Coal Resource Data System of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey has quantitatively determined 35 major, minor, and trace elements in each sample. Tests were also made for 35 other trace elements using semi-quantitative spectrographic methods. In addition, the Coal Analysis Section of the U.S. Department of Energy has determined proximate and ultimate analyses, 3cu, forms of sulfur, free-swelling indexes, and ash-fusion temperatures on 563 of the 659 samples.</p><p>Comparison of the geometric means of the 644 bituminous coal samples of this report with an additional 968 bituminous coal samples of the eastern United States reported by Swanson and others in 1976 and by Zubovic and others in 1979 is shown in tables 2a-c. As shown by the means for ultimate and proximate analyses, small differences exist between the two sets of data; however, only the moisture and oxygen contents are significantly different. The forms of sulfur, ash-fusion temperature and heat of combustion are similar. The means for the major and minor oxides in ash are similar for SiO<sub>2</sub>, K<sub>2</sub>O, Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, TiO<sub>2</sub>, MgO, and P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> are lower, whereas, MnO is higher in the analyses of the samples of this report. Eighteen of the means for the trace elements in the coal are about equal for the two sets of samples. The runoff filled Lake Pleasant and resulted in the largest release--66,600 cubic feet per second--from the reservoir since it was built in 1927; the maximum inflow to the reservoir was about 73,300 cubic feet per second. The area inundated by the releases includes about 28 miles along the channel from the mouth of the Agua Fria River to the Beardsley Canal flume crossing 5 miles downstream from Waddell Dam. The flood of 1980 into Lake Pleasant has a recurrence interval of about 47 years, whereas the flood of record (1919) has a recurrence interval of about 100 years. The partial differential equations are integrated over the thicknesses of fresh water and salt water resulting in two equations describing the flow characteristics in the areal domain. These equations are approximated using finite-difference techniques and the resulting algebraic equations are solved for the dependent variables, fresh water head and salt water head. An iterative solution method was found to be most appropriate. The program is designed to simulate time-dependent problems such as those associated with the development of coastal aquifers, and can treat water-table conditions or confined conditions with steady-state leakage of fresh water. The program will generally be most applicable to the analysis of regional aquifer problems in which the zone between salt water and fresh water can be considered a surface (sharp interface). Example problems and a listing of the computer code are included. Six major elements of the assessment to be completed by October 1981 are (1) a detailing of the legal, institutional, and structural development of water resources in the basins and the current problems and conflicts; (2) a compilation and synthesis of the physical hydrology of the basins; (3) development of a special workshop approach to involve local management in the direction and results of the study; (4) development of a comprehensive streamflow model emcompassing both basins to provide a quantitative hydrologic framework for water-quality analysis; (5) development of a water-quality transport model for selected constituents and characteristics on selected reaches of the Truckee River; and (6) a detailed examination of selected fish habitats for specified reaches of the Truckee River. Progress will be periodically reported in reports, maps, computer data files, mathematical models, a bibliography, and public presentations. In building a basic framework to develop techniques, the basins were viewed as a single hydrologic unit because of interconnecting diversion structures. The framework comprises 13 hydrographic subunits to facilitate modeling and sampling. Several significant issues beyond the scope of the assessment were considered as supplementary proposals; water-quality loadings in Truckee and Carson Rivers, urban runoff in Reno and management alternatives, and a model of limnological processes in Lahontan Reservoir. Flow of the Walker River into the reservation averages about 113,000 acre-feet a year. Of this amount, about 42,000 acre-feet is used on the reservation, recharging the gound-water system and supplying irrigation water for alfalfa and pasture crops. The water quality of the river water is well suited for these purposes, and the possibility of expanding surface-water use exists. A mathematical model of the ground-water system was constructed to test various assumptions about recharge and discharge rates. The model generated water-level contours that agreed reasonably well with measured water levels, median deviation was 12 feet. With additional data , the model could be used in the future to test the feasibility of evapotranspiration salvage at the seven proposed sites for new stock and irrigation wells. The primary users of ground water on the reservation are phreatophytes and playa surfaces. They allow ground water to be lost to evaporation. About 19,000 acre-feet per year is lost through this mechanism. Domestic and livestock uses account for only about 250 acre-feet per year. Total recharge to the ground-water system amounts to about 30 ,000 acre-feet per year, and the possibility of more extensive use of ground water on the reservation exists. Quality of the ground water in most areas is suitable for all intended purposes. In the Atlantic, State jurisdiction extends for 3 geographical (nautical) miles (5.56 km) from the coastline. The OCS, which comprises the submerged lands of the Continental Shelf seaward of the State boundaries, is under Federal jurisdiction. Activities occurring offshore must be supplied and supported from land, and the onshore activities required may have significant effects on the communities in which they occur. For example, oil and gas production might involve the expansion of existing transportation and processing facilities and the construction of new ones, and it might trigger an influx of workers and change employment patterns.
