A zircon fission-track age of 0.45 ± 0.08 million years (weighted average of 15 samples) has been determined on an ash interbedded with Pleistocene marine or littoral strata in the type section of the Merced Formation at two localities south of San Francisco. Separation of zircon crystals into several sample groups based on the presence or absence of glass coats, color, and surface texture has made it possible to identify the pyrogenic, detrital, and inferred accidental (xenocrystic) components in the zircon separates. The age obtained on pyrogenic zircons agrees closely with the youngest (0.45 ± 0.18 million years) of several K-Ar ages run previously on plagioclase and hornblende separates from the same localities. The older K-Ar ages (0.7 to 2.1 million years) on this ash are probably a result of detrital or accidental contamination, as determined by analyses on back-picked and untreated splits of the same feldspar separate.

One of the methods by which the use of highly variable streamflow in the area can be evaluated is with the aid of multiyear low-flow frequency information. Using data form 19 streamflow-gaging stations in the study area, maps were developed from which the mean annual discharge and discharges for the 2- and 50-year recurrence interval for durations of 12,24, 36, 48, and 60 months can be obtained for rural ungaged sites that have drainage areas of less than 1,000 square miles. Discharges for intervening recurrence intervals can be obtained by interpolation. Extrapolation of regionalized discharges in this report to drainage areas smaller than about 50 square miles and larger than about 1,000 square miles has not been validated. Data were collected from two floods (May 4-7, and June 7-11 , 1979) with peak discharges of 24,900 cubic feet per second and 40,900 cubic feet per second. The total suspended-sediment discharge from the first flood was approximately 201,000 tons, and the total suspended-sediment discharge from the second flood was 630,000 tons. The volume of sediment from these two floods was approximately 970 acre-feet with approximately 20 acre-feet of this total being the bed load. (USGS)
