Extensive subsidence, caused mainly by ground-water pumping but also by oil and gas extraction, has increased the frequency of flooding, caused extensive damage to industrial and transportation infrastructure, motivated major investments in levees, reservoirs, and surfacewater distribution facilities, and caused substantial loss of wetland habitat. Ongoing patterns of subsidence in the Houston area have been carefully monitored using borehole extensometers, Global Positioning System (GPS) and conventional spirit-leveling surveys, and more recently, an emerging technology—Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR)—which enables development of spatially-detailed maps of land-surface displacement over broad areas.

This report, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, briefly summarizes the history of subsidence in the area and the local consequences of subsidence and describes the use of InSAR as one of several tools in an integrated subsidence-monitoring program in the area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs11002","collaboration":"In cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Stork, S.V., and Sneed, M., 2002, Houston-Galveston Bay area, Texas, from space; a new tool for mapping land subsidence: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 110-02, HTML Document; Report: 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs11002.","productDescription":"HTML Document; Report: 6 p.","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126621,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_110_02.bmp"},{"id":333408,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-110-02/pdf/FS_110-02.pdf","text":"Report","size":"6.98 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":3976,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-110-02/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Houston-Galveston Bay area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -95.23773193359375,\n              28.98171470422955\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.59478759765624,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.8721923828125,\n              29\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.05621337890625,\n              29.604506272365295\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.21551513671875,\n              30.171250084367482\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.009521484375,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.3778076171875,\n              31\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.82299804687499,\n              30.420256142845158\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5,\n              29.439597566602902\n            ],\n            [\n              -95.23773193359375,\n              28.98171470422955\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bd87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stork, Sylvia V. 0000-0002-1994-5560 svstork@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1994-5560","contributorId":5096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stork","given":"Sylvia","email":"svstork@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":235257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sneed, Michelle 0000-0002-8180-382X micsneed@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8180-382X","contributorId":155,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sneed","given":"Michelle","email":"micsneed@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":235256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This database represents one of the longest continuous water-quality data sets in the country. Benthic macroinvertebrates are aquatic insects, such as mayflies, caddisflies, riffle beetles, and midges, and other invertebrates that live on the stream bottom. Benthic macroinvertebrates are useful in evaluating stream quality because their habitat preferences and low motility cause them to be affected directly by substances that enter the aquatic system. By evaluating the diversity and community structure of benthic-macroinvertebrate populations, a determination of stream quality can be made.

Between 1981 and 1997, the water-quality network consisted of 43 sites in 5 major basins in Chester County—Delaware, Schuylkill, Brandywine, Big Elk and Octoraro, and Red and White Clay. Benthicmacroinvertebrate, water-chemistry, and habitat data were collected each year in October or November during base-flow conditions. Using these data, Reif evaluated the overall water-quality condition of Chester County streams. This Fact Sheet summarizes the key findings from Reif for streams in the Brandywine Creek Basin. These streams include West Branch Brandywine Creek (sites 37 and 38), Buck Run (site 46), Doe Run (site 45), East Branch Brandywine Creek (sites 48, 42, 36, and 39), Indian Run (site 47), West Valley Creek (site 44), and Main Stem Brandywine Creek (site 40). This summary includes an analysis of stream conditions based on benthic-macroinvertebrate samples and an analysis of trends in stream conditions for the 17-year study period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs11702","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Chester County Water Resources Authority","usgsCitation":"Reif, A.G., 2002, Assessment of stream quality using biological indices at selected sites in the Brandywine Creek basin, Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1981-97: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 117-02, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs11702.","productDescription":"4 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":3746,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2002/0117/fs20020117.pdf","text":"Report","size":"291 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 2002-0117"},{"id":122027,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2002/0117/coverthb.jpg"}],"contact":"
Director, Pennsylvania Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
215 Limekiln Road
New Cumberland, PA 17070
","tableOfContents":"

Introduction

Study Approach

Stream-Quality Designation Criteria

Stream-Quality Assessment

Trends in Benthic-Macroinvertebrate and Chemical Data

Summary

References Cited

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671dc2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reif, Andrew G. 0000-0002-5054-5207 agreif@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5054-5207","contributorId":2632,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reif","given":"Andrew","email":"agreif@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":230281,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Before Crater Lake came into existence, a cluster of volcanoes dominated the landscape. This cluster, called Mount Mazama (for the Portland, Oregon, climbing club the Mazamas), was destroyed during an enormous explosive eruption 7,700 years ago. So much molten rock was expelled that the summit area collapsed during the eruption to form a large volcanic depression, or caldera. Subsequent smaller eruptions occurred as water began to fill the caldera to eventually form the deepest lake in the United States. Decades of detailed scientific studies of Mount Mazama and new maps of the floor of Crater Lake reveal stunning details of the volcano’s eruptive history and identify potential hazards from future eruptions and earthquakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs09202","usgsCitation":"Klimasauskas, E.P., Bacon, C.R., and Alexander, J., 2002, Mount Mazama and Crater Lake: Growth and destruction of a Cascade volcano (Online Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 092-02, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs09202.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":407880,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_71659.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":119446,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_092_02.jpg"},{"id":3529,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2002/fs092-02/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Crater Lake, Mount Mazama","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.1799850463867,\n              42.89759762210227\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.0364761352539,\n              42.89759762210227\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.0364761352539,\n              42.98706961757943\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.1799850463867,\n              42.98706961757943\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.1799850463867,\n              42.89759762210227\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Online Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b47a8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Klimasauskas, Edward P.","contributorId":80366,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Klimasauskas","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222844,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bacon, Charles R. 0000-0002-2165-5618 cbacon@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2165-5618","contributorId":2909,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bacon","given":"Charles","email":"cbacon@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":222842,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Alexander, Jim","contributorId":66755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Alexander","given":"Jim","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222843,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The swash zone, however, has been suggested as a possible habitat for waterborne disease-causing microorganisms (pathogens). The spaces between the sand grains, or interstices, offer habitats that may support the survival of certain bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1999). To investigate this possibility, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) determined the distribution of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) in subsurface sediments and interstitial waters collected from near the swash zone at three Lake Erie urban beaches and one inland lake during the recreational seasons of 2000 and 2001. Water and lake-bottom sediment samples were also collected within the bathing areas and were analyzed for E. coli ; these bathing-water data were compared to swash-zone data to determine whether swash-zone materials were enriched with E. coli .
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs13402","usgsCitation":"Francy, D.S., and Gifford, A.M., 2002, Escherichia coli in the swash zone at four Ohio bathing beaches: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 134-02, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs13402.","productDescription":"4 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":122044,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2002/0134/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":3738,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2002/0134/fs2002134.pdf","text":"Report","size":"224 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 2002-134"}],"country":"United States","state":"Ohio","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.452392578125,\n              41.12074559016745\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.79345703125,\n              41.50857729743935\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.947265625,\n              41.95131994679697\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.452392578125,\n              41.59490508367679\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.452392578125,\n              41.12074559016745\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.79139709472656,\n              41.2834825246581\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.7278823852539,\n              41.2834825246581\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.7278823852539,\n              41.31830206651102\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.79139709472656,\n              41.31830206651102\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.79139709472656,\n              41.2834825246581\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Ohio Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
6460 Busch Blvd.
Columbus, OH 43229
","tableOfContents":"

What is the Swash Zone?

How Are Bacteria Levels Monitored at Bathing Beaches?

Why Was This Study Done?

How Was This Study Done?

What Were The Study Results?

References

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fde07","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Francy, Donna S. 0000-0001-9229-3557 dsfrancy@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9229-3557","contributorId":1853,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Francy","given":"Donna","email":"dsfrancy@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":35860,"text":"Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":513,"text":"Ohio Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":230269,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gifford, Amie M.","contributorId":106083,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gifford","given":"Amie","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":230270,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Management of this region?s resources requires an understanding of how its climate has varied in the past and may change in the near future. Recent studies by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other scientists suggest that the region may become drier for the next 2 to 3 decades, in a pattern similar to the drought of 1942?1977. Possible sources of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals in streams may include fish hatcheries. This fact sheet presents the results from a preliminary study of fish hatcheries across the United States for the occurrence and concentration of antibiotics present in fish hatchery water. The study examines both sufonamides and tetracyclines. Sulfonamides are synthetic compounds, and tetracyclines are naturally occurring compounds. The use of antibiotics added to specially formulated feed is a common practice in fish hatcheries to treat and prevent bacterial infections in large fish populations. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved antibiotics are oxytetracycline-HCI, sulfamerazine, and a combination drug containing ormetoprim and sulfadiamethoxine (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2003). During January 2001–June 2002, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Organic Geochemistry Research Laboratory (OGRL), Lawrence, Kansas, cooperatively collected water samples from 13 fish hatcheries across the United States (fig. 1) with the assistance of hatchery operators. A method for the analysis of antibiotics was developed and used to identify and quantify these compounds in fish hatchery water (Lindsey and others, 2001). This study was completed to determine if trace levels of antibiotics [approximately 1 microgram per liter (μg/L) or 1 part per billion or greater occurred] in which water associated with fish hatcheries, which are a potential source of these compounds in surface water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston,
