During the summer of 1966, a rotary—drill rig and crew were made available for 2 weeks to the U.S. Geological Survey for use specifically in eastern Connecticut. I was able to take advantage of this opportunity and proposed to investigate two geologic problems that had arisen in the vicinity of Chaplin, Conn., as a result of mapping by H. R. Dixon in the Hampton quadrangle (Dixon and Pessl, 1966) and by G. L. Snyder in his reconnaissance of the W-adjacent Spring Rill quadrangle (Snyder, written commun., 19661. The stream-gaging station was discontinued on July 5, 1933. Daily streamflow records obtained at this site are published in the annual series of Geological Survey water supply papers beginning in 1925. Monthly and yearly summaries are published in Water-Supply Paper 1312.
In October 1960, the Geological Survey resumed collection of hydrologic data in the Mountain Creek watershed by establishing three stream gaging stations and one reservoir-content station. The data-collection sites are on Mountain Creek near Cedar Hill (station 08049600), Walnut Creek near Mansfield (station 08049700), Mountain Creek at Grand Prairie (station 08050100), and Mountain Creek Lake near Grand Prairie (station 08050050; fig. 1). In October 1970, the Geological Survey assumed operation of the stage station Mountain Creek near Duncanville (station 08049900; fig. 1). Since 1974 water-quality data has been collected at varying periodic intervals at the sites near Cedar Hill, near Duncanville, and Mountain Creek Lake since 1969. These water-quality data collection stations are shown on figure 1.

Specific conductances on the Pascagoula River ranged from less than 100 to more than 40,000 micromhos per centimeter and increased downstream. Specific conductance also increased with depth at downstram sites, indicating density stratification. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations were also affected by density stratification but were generally greater than 4.0 milligrams per liter in both rivers. Analyses of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand and nutrient concentrations indicate that oxidation of both carbonaceous and nitrogenous materials significantly affected the waste assimilative capacity of the rivers. Concentrations of pesticides and most trace elements in both the water column and the bottom sediments were zero or very small. Titanium concentrations were less than 220 micrograms per liter in the water column and 6,500 micrograms per gram in bottom sediments. Small concentrations of oil and grease, PCB's, and phenols were also detected. Fecal coliform and fecal streptococcal bacteria concentrations were generally greater in the Escatawpa River and ranged from about 10 to 18,000 colonies per 100 milliliters of water. To determine if impaired water-quality conditions existed, samples were collected at several sites above and below major point-source waste discharges near Burley, Idaho. Data collected for this study indicate some water-quality impairment within the study reach. At site 15 near Milner Dam, dissolved oxygen was below the 90-percent saturation standard prescribed by the Idaho water-quality standards. The total coliform and fecal coliform standards were exceeded at about one-third of the sites sampled on the main stem of the Snake River. Un-ionized ammonia concentration exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water-quality criteria at one site near Burley. Concentrations of trace metals, insecticides, and herbicides were all low; none exceeded existing criteria.

The work was done as part of a geohydrologic study, the results of which are reported in the 1973 U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 486-H; Geohydrology of the Yuma Area, Arizona and California, by Olmsted, Loeltz, and Irelan. Most of the logs are plotted from temperatures measured with two Whitney thermistors at depth intervals of 2 to 20 feet in downward succession in each well or test hole, using land surface as datum. A few logs were made with a truck-mounted wireline logger using thermistor probes and continuously recording equipment. All measurements were in degrees Fahrenheit, later converted to degrees Celsius, and were calibrated with a mercury-in-glass thermometer. Accuracy of most of the measurements was + or - 1.0F and precision was about + or - 0.2F. The survey area is located in the central part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, within parts of Iron, Baraga, and Dickinson Counties. The general area covered is between 46°00' and 46°30' latitude and 88°00' and 88°30' longitude (fig. 1).
The INPUT survey was flown as part of a U.S. Geological Survey CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Appraisal Program) project focusing on the Iron River 2° quadrangle. The survey was flown in order to provide geophysical information which will aid in an integrated geological assessment of mineral potentials of this part of the Iron River 2° quadrangle. The flight line spacing was chosen to maximize the areal coverage without a loss of resolution of major lithologic and structural features.
East-west flight lines were flown 400 feet above ground at 1/2 mile intervals. Aerial photos were used for navigation, and the flight path was recorded on continuous-strip film. A continuously recording total field ground magnetic station was used to monitor variations in the Earth's magnetic field. One north-south line was flown to provide a tie for the magnetic data, which was recorded simultaneously with the electromagnetic data by a sensor mounted in the tail of the aircraft.
This report is one of two open-file reports. The map in the other report Heran and Smith (1980) shows locations of the fiducial points, the flight lines, preliminary locations of anomalies and conductive zones; all plotted on an air photomosaic. The latitude and longitude ticks marked on this map are only approximate due to distortion in air photos used to recover the flight line position. This map is preliminary and is not to be considered a final interpretation. The present report contains a description of the instrument specifications, a copy of the ground station magnetic data, and a record of the electromagnetic and magnetic data, with reference to the digital data of the flight records. The purpose of two reports is to make the analog and magnetic records available separate from the anomaly map.
The following sections on the general description of the INPUT system are abridged from a typical interpretation report prepared by Geoterrex Limited of Ottawa, Canada for the U.S. Geological Survey.

The International Geomagnetic Reference Field had been subtracted from the data prior to assembly. An arbitrary common datum was selected and the surveys were recontoured at the joins. The 100 gamma contour was selected because it shows the magnetic contrast to best advantage. To complement the magnetic data a gravity survey was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and this data is available in a companion map (Wilson and Daniels, in press). Each of these maps has been interpreted in relation to the other and to the geologic map prepared as part of the same program (Goldsmith and others, 1978). It should be noted that the geophysics has had a measurable influence on some of the geologic mapping.
