During 1977 and 1978 the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with county weed and pest control districts, conducted a noxious-weed-control program in Wyoming. The herbicides primarily used were picloram, 2,4-D, and dicamba. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, sampled and analyzed water from selected streams for these herbicides plus silvex; 2,4,5-T; and 2,4-DP.

This report contains data for samples collected during 1977 and 1978. The most commonly detected herbicides in water samples were 2,4-D with 41-percent nonzero values and picloram with 34.5-percent nonzero values. Herbicide occurrence in bottom-material samples was uncommon; dicamba was found with 9-percent nonzero values. The maximum herbicide concentration in water was 1.1 micrograms per liter of 2,4-D, and the maximum herbicide concentration in bottom material was 8.0 micrograms per kilogram of 2,4-D. Based on available toxicity data and water-quality criteria, these herbicide concentrations do not constitute dangerous or harmful concentrations to humans or to the environment.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the City of El Paso and the Texas Department of Water Resources, made a preliminary study of specific factors related to recharging the Hueco bolson in the northeast El Paso area with treated sewage effluent. The city is interested in the location and spacing of injection wells relative to (1) maintaining the injected effluent in the aquifer for a predetermined amount of time (residence time) before it is pumped out, (2) recovery by pumping of as much of the injected effluent as possible, and (3) the long-term effects of injection on water-level declines.

\n

A two-dimensional digital-computer model was developed to project short-term hydraulic gradients under various conditions of pumping and injection. A corresponding range of interstitial velocities (294-773 feet per year) was estimated by assuming idealized piston-type flow. These velocities may be used to plan the location and spacing of production and injection wells under assumed time factors related to the required residence time for the injected water.

\n

The injection sites were selected near a proposed sewage-treatment facility in an area that will allow flexibility in the locations of the production and injection wells. Maximum 20-year declines of about 35 feet were projected for areas several miles west and southwest of the facility under anticipated injection and pumping rates.

\n

The proposed injection water will require strict water-quality controls, which may involve chlorination and the removal of suspended solids. Mixing of the proposed injection water with the native ground water probably will not clog the aquifer by mineral precipitation. The relatively large concentrations of sodium in the injection water may reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the clay layers in the aquifer, but the permeable sands should not be seriously affected. Plans for an artificial-recharge program need to include an experimental installation to evaluate the system under field conditions.

A set of daily streamflow-routing models are used to simulate streamflow at 10 sites along the Wisconsin River for water years 1915-76, to determine the effects the reservoir system has on flood discharges. Streamflow is simulated under the following two conditions: (1) No reservoirs are in the system and (2) all of the present reservoirs are in place and operated with current rules.

\n

At Wisconsin Dells, 20 miles upstream from Portage, daily streamflow hydrographs are estimated for the 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-year floods. These were determined from statistical analysis of the simulated daily streamflows for the condition of all reservoirs in place.

\n

The reservoirs have a significant impact on floods. The mean annual flood peak at Wisconsin Dells is lowered about 20% from 43,000 cubic feet per second for the simulated, unregulated condition to 34,000 cubic feet per second for the simulated, regulated condition. The 100-year flood peak at Wisconsin Dells is reduced about 10% (92,000 to 82,000 cubic feet per second) between the simulated, unregulated and simulated, regulated conditions.

\n

The 100-year flood peak at Wisconsin Dells, computed from the simulated, regulated streamflow data for the period 1915-76, is 82,000 cubic feet per second, including the effects of all the reservoirs in the river system, as they are currently operated. It also includes the effects of Lakes Du Bay, Petenwell, and Castle Rock which are significant for spring floods but are insignificant for summer or fall floods because they are normally maintained nearly full in the summer and fall and have very little storage for floodwaters. The National Water Data Exchange (NAWDES) is a nationwide program managed by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist users of water data and water-related data in identifying, locating, and acquiring needed data. NAWDEX services are available through a program office located in the Geological Survey 's National Center in Reston, Va., and a network of assistance centers established in 45 States and in Puerto Rico to provide local and convenient access to NAWDEX facilities. This manual presents operational guidelines for the operation of these assistance centers to accomplish the expeditious flow of data from holder to user. These guidelines will be occasionally modified and supplemented to accommodate new concepts and techniques that may be needed. (USGS)

A subdivision developer encountered water while digging trenches associated with developing property at Spring Acres Subdivision, Anchorage, Alaska, during the summer of 1975. He reported encountering water at a depth of about 8 feet in June 1975 and also reported a rise in water level to approximately land surface by early August. Neither incident was expected by the developer. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Municipality of Anchorage, had conducted an artificial-recharge experiment approximately 9,000 feet northeast of Spring Acres Subdivision from May 20 through September 19, 1975. Recharge experiments were also conducted in 1971, 1973, and 1974. The proximity of the 1975 recharge experiment to the subdivision caused speculation on the possible connection between the experiment and the water problems encountered by the developer.

The effect of the artificial-recharge experiments on water levels at Spring Acres Subdivision was evaluated by using two digital-computer models constructed to simulate the water-level rises induced by the artificial recharge. The models predicted that the artificial recharge would have caused water levels in the aquifer immediately underlying Spring Acres Subdivision to rise approximately 0.2 foot from May 20 to August 7, 1975. The models also predicted a total rise in ground-water levels of 1.1 feet at this location from July 16, 1973, to August 7, 1975, as a result of the artificial-recharge experiments.

Water-level data collected for auger holes in March 1975 by a consulting firm for the contractor indicated a depth to water of 6 to 7 feet below land surface at Spring Acres Subdivision at this time. Water levels measured in and near Spring Acres Subdivision several years before and after the 1973-75 artificial-recharge experiments showed seasonal rises of 2 to 12.4 feet. A depth to water below land surface of 2.6 feet was measured 600 feet from the subdivision in 1971 and in the subdivision in 1977. Average depth to water in the area was 7.0 feet from early 1976 to September 1979.

The area is flat and low lying with elevations ranging from sea level in the southeast part to 10 feet at Chekika Hammock with an average elevation of about 6 feet. Rainfall in the area averages 57.9 inches a year with about 80% of the total falling during the May to October wet season. There is some residential development and farming in the east-central part of the area where land elevations are slightly higher. Pressure by agricultural, commerical, and housing interests to develop the area is increasing. Historically, most of the area was flooded for extended periods of time. The construction of canals, levees, and controls has lowered the average water levels of the area. This has reduced the extent and decreased the time of flooding. Long-term hydrographs show graphically the effects that the water control works have had on the hydrologic system. The change in discharge into the north end of the East Everglades through the Tamiami Canal outlets, Levees 30 to 67A, due to construction is very pronounced. Maps showing the altitude of the water table for wet and dry periods indicate that Levee 67 Extended Canal greatly influences the water levels and shape of the water-table contours in the northwestern part of the East Everglades. Forty samples of Tertiary and Cretaceous outcrop or suspected outcrop were dredged along the 250-km-long northwest-trending continental slope between long 138°00' W. and 142°30' W. These samples, from water depths of 3,150 m to 200 m, combined with seismic reflection data, identify seven rock units in apparently normal stratigraphic position. From oldest to youngest they are: Unit A: Hard graywacke, argillite, and possible intrusive rocks of inferred Late Cretaceous age that crop out in the eastern part of the slope and probably underlie much of the Fairweather Ground. Unit B: At least 900 m of sandstone, conglomerate, shale, and subordinate basaltic volcanic rocks west of Yakutat Seavalley between 142° W. and 143° W. that is not dated but is probably of late Paleocene to early Eocene age. Unit C: 1,300 m of basaltic flow and pyroclastic rocks with associated clastic marine sedimentary rocks that makes up much of the rugged lower slope throughout the area. This sequence is largely, or entirely, of early Eocene age. Unit D: Up to 2,100 m of early and middle Eocene sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and tuffaceous organic-rich shale that partly overlies, and partly intertongues with, the volcanic unit. Unit E: 800 m of early to late Eocene and early Oligocene(?) organic-rich shale, tuffaceous shale, siltstone, and sandstone that partly intertongues with, and partly overlies units C and D. Unit F: 300+ m of siltstone, at least in part of late Oligocene age, that crops out locally along the upper slope where it unconformably overlies Unit E. Unit G: Up to 2,000 m of late Cenozoic (middle Miocene? and younger) clastic sedimentary rocks including abundant glaciomarine deposits that unconformably overlie all the older units.

The early Tertiary sequence sampled on the continental slope differs strikingly in lithology and structure from coeval rocks exposed onshore or penetrated in unsuccessful exploratory wells on the adjacent mainland. Units B, D, and E include abundant source rocks that have undergone a thermal history resulting in local generation of hydrocarbons. Sandstones from Units D and E locally have secondary porosities up to 31 percent and permeabilities to 36 md. Seismic reflection data indicate that the sequence with the most favorable source and reservoir potential (Units B, D, E) dips northeastward beneath OCS Lease Sale 55 where it could be a favorable exploratory target if involved in suitable traps. Young anticlinal folds are not present, but other important traps are likely to include drape structures, horsts, and faults within the early Tertiary sequence and pinchouts, fault traps, or combination structural/stratigraphic traps along the northeastern margin of the early Tertiary basin.
