The G-2 was drilled by Ocean Production Company, acting as the operator for 19 participating companies between January 6 and August 30, 1977. The semisubmersible rig <u>Ocean Victory</u> was used to drill the well to a depth of 21,874 feet at a location 132 statute miles east-southeast of Nantucket Island in 272 feet of water. An earlier deep Stratigraphic test, the COST No. G-l well, was drilled 42 statute miles west of the G-2 well, to a depth of 16,071 feet in 1976 (fig. 1). Geological and engineering data obtained from the well were used by companies and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for evaluating the petroleum potential and possible drilling problems in the U.S. North Atlantic OCS area in preparation for lease sale 42 held on December 18, 1979. It includes the crest of the range, which is slightly higher than 7,200 ft (2,190 m), the Sandstone Bluffs east of the crest where steep cliffs as high as 2,500 ft (760 m) occur, and part of the gently sloping western range front. The references listed are selected in the sense that mainly statistical reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and many annual and biennial reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor agencies are not included. Also not included are data on claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, localities 126- 130 in MacKevett and Holloway, 1977 (OF 77-169A). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement that the claims are not on valid mineral occurrences, but only chat there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposits that might be present. About 14 square miles of Farmington is underlain by stratified-drift deposits which, in places, are more than 450 feet thick. The most productive deposits are found in the Farmington River valley, from Unionville to River Glen, and along Scott Swamp Brook. In these areas, saturated, coarse-grained, stratified-drift deosits exceed 80 feet in thickness and estimated yields to individual wells ranged from 250 to 1,000 gallons per minute. Results of mathematical model analysis of three of the most favorable ground-water areas indicate that long-term yields range from 1.2 to 2.5 million gallons per day. Water in the Framington and Pequabuck Rivers meets the Connecticut Drinking Water Standards, assuming complete conventional treatment, for coliform orgaisms, color, trubidity, chloride, copper, and nitrate. Coliform bacteria concentrations in the Pequabuck river (12-month geometric mean of about 6,800 colonies per 100 milliliters of water) indicate a potential problem. Water in the stratified-drift aquifer is of good quality with the exception of manganese; 10 of 11 wells sampled had maganese concentrations above 0.05 milligram per liter. Because of its proximity to Willmar, many homes and summer cabins have been built around the lake. Presently (1978), the shore is more than 90 percent developed. One effect of this development is accelerated eutrophication, most commonly shown by algae blooms.</p>\n<p>An annual hydrologic budget for Eagle Lake was prepared for the 1978 water year in support of a nutrient study prepared by the University of Minnesota at Morris. Results show that the amount of water that flowed through Eagle Lake in the 1978 water year was 6,670 acre-feet. Inflow to the lake was 45 percent surface water, 22 percent ground water, and 33 percent precipitation. Outflow was 73 prcent surface water, 25 percent evaporation, and slightly greater than 2 percent net change in lake storage.</p>\n<p>Estimates for the ground-water component were derived both as a residual in the hydrologic-budget equation and by flow-net analyses.
