The area depends almost entirely on groundwater for its water supplies. In 1978 the estimated groundwater pumpage was 55,000 acre-feet, 30,000 acre-feet of which was used for irrigation. Withdrawal of groundwater has had little effect on groundwater levels in the area. Information shown on the maps includes depth to water, altitude of the water level, spring discharge, chemical quality of the groundwater, and irrigated area. Hydrographs of the water level in selected wells and a table of historical pumpage also are included. Scale 1:125,000. This map is based on measurements made on a network of 77 observation wells in southern Maryland. Highest levels of the potentiometric surface, 63 to 67 feet above sea level, were measured near the outcrop or subcrop of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The surface slopes to the southeast to about 5 feet above sea level along much of the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Four separate, distinct, and extensive cones of depression have developed in the surface around the well fields of the city of Annapolis, Broadneck, town of Waldorf, and Chalk Point. Several square miles of each cone are below sea level and in localized areas at Chalk Point and Waldorf, the surface is 40 to 50 feet below sea level. The network of wells was developed as part of the cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Maryland Geological Survey, and the Maryland Energy and Coastal Zone Administration.

The map is based on water level measurements made May 19-23, 1980. The well network used included 83 wells which have been screened in the Aquia aquifer (Aquia Formation of Paleocene Age). Highest levels of the potentiometric surface, 20 to 35 feet above sea level, were measured near the outcrop or subcrop of the aquifer in the topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The potentiometric surface slopes to the southeast. Four separate and extensive cones of depression have developed in the potentiometric surface in the vicinities of Lexington Park, Leonardtown, Prince Frederick, and Chesapeake Beach. The cones of Leonardtown and Lexington Park seem to be merging.

In general, yield of water from individual wells in unconsolidated surficial deposits is low (0-10 gallons per minute). Several small, unconsolidated deposits may yield moderate quantities (50-100 gallons per minute) but these have not been adequately tested.

Yields from 160 wells in the crystalline bedrock range from 0.5 gallons per minute to 100 gallons per minute, with a median yield of 10 gallons per minute. Wells in zones of extensive fracturing or faulting generally have higher than average yields. Zones of fracturing may correspond to lineations which have been mapped by interpretation from topographic maps and aerial photographs.

In general, ground water is of suitable chemical quality for public supply. Most ground water is low in dissolved solids and is soft. Iron exceeds 0.3 milligrams per liter and manganese exceeds 0.05 milligrams per liter in water from some wells. Brackish (salty) water is present in only a few wells at the coast or adjacent to saltwater bodies. Elevated concentrations of Radon-222 have been reported from wells in the granite aquifer.

The map report, at a scale of 1 inch equals 4 miles, shows the idstribution of aquifers and the locations of municipal water-supply sources and known liquid-waste impoundments. Ground water, an important source of municipal water supply, is produced from shallow sand and gravel aquifers that are generally unconfined, less than 200 feet thick, and yield less than 2,000 gallons per minute to individual wells. These aquifers commonly occupy lowlands and stream valleys and are most extensive in eastern Massachusetts. Surface impoundments of liquid waste are commonly located over these aquifers. These impoundments may leak and allow waste to infiltrate underlying aquifers and alter their water quality. The data presented herein is from an airborne electromagnetic-resistivity-survey conducted by Dighem Limited of Toronto Canada for the U.S. Geological Survey. The area surveyed is located in the western San Juan Mountains near Lake City, Colorado. The general area covered is between 37°45' and 38° latitude north and 107°15' and 107°35' longitude west. The survey flying was confined to nine valleys which surround the Lake City caldera. Four blocks were surveyed from October 22 to October 27, 1979 for a total of 535 line - kilometers. The survey was flown as part of a mineral appraisal study conducted in cooperation with Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The survey was done to detect massive mineralization, mainly copper, and to locate conductive faults that may be suitable sites for uranium mineralization.

To be useful, airborne electromagnetic measurements must be made within a few hundred feet of the surface. The area that was flown is so rugged that a helicopter rather than a fixed-wing aircraft was used.

Fraser and Dvorak summarize the data of the survey areas as follows: in the east and south, the ground resistivities varied over a broad range—, from 20 to 1000 ohm-m. The western and northern parts of the area were characterized by resistivities mostly in the 300 to 1000 ohm-m range. Several weak to moderate EM anomalies were located that may warrant ground follow-up work.
