Investigators from several different organizations were in the field shortly after the earthquake recording aftershocks and checking intensities. The data from postal intensity surveys and field personnel are still coming in, and it will be some time before it is all evaluated and analyzed. This preliminary list of the results of our own field investigations is being produced now in order that the information we gathered may be combined with that of other researchers for analysis.

Our investigation, conducted from July 28 to August 3, was designed to delineate the areal distribution of the intensities and to document the amount and type of damage in the epicentral region. Tentative intensities have been assigned to these reports and they have been plotted in figure 1. However, as more information becomes available from other investigators, some of these values may be changed and other locations may be added. Therefore no attempt has been made to contour the data. A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was assigned to Maysville, Ky., approximately 50 km north of the epicenter, based on the concentrated chimney and other types of building damage there. Elsewhere, similar but scattered chimney damage has been assigned intensity VI.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801242","usgsCitation":"Hopper, M.G., and Reagor, B.G., 1980, Field survey of intensity for the earthquake of July 27, 1980, Sharpsburg, Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1242, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801242.","productDescription":"31 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":426085,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1242/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142904,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1242/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kentucky","city":"Sharpsburg","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.19556213355173\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.91274325321169,\n              38.19556213355173\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.91274325321169,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.94432382381211,\n              38.212285759691355\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fce4b07f02db5f5453","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hopper, Margaret G. hopper@usgs.gov","contributorId":2227,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hopper","given":"Margaret","email":"hopper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":159941,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reagor, B. The coastal-plain sediments, parts of which underlie the county, are the largest source of groundwater in Virginia. Four aquifers form the complex aquifer system. Hydraulic characteristics vary from aquifer to aquifer and from place to place. The Cretaceous aquifer furnishes nearly all the water for industrial and municipal needs. Movement of water in the Cretaceous aquifer is toward cones of depression formed by pumping centers at Williamsburg and Dow Badische Co. All aquifers contain water that generally meets State standards for drinking water. Water in the Cretaceous aquifer is of the sodium chloride bicarbonate type. As depth of aquifer increases, the concentrations of dissolved solids and chloride also increase. Saline water (more than 250 milligrams per liter) occupies the deeper parts of the confined aquifers. The amount of water stored in the coastal sediments is estimated to be 650-1300 billion gallons. An increase in pumpage to accommodate the expected daily demand of 9.8 million gallons per day in year 2000 is feasible provided pumpage is distributed over the county. This investigation of the hydrogeologic environment and the quality of water in stratified-drift aquifers underlying seven probable contaminant sources in Connecticut shows some effects at each site. \r\n\r\nWater from test wells downgradient from septage-disposal facilities in Old Saybrook and Clinton contains elevated concentrations of sodium, chloride, manganese, iron, detergent (as MBAS), dissolved organic carbon, and some trace metals. The effects are most pronounced at shallow depths close to the septage lagoons, where concentrations of some constituents exceed Connecticut Department of Health drinking water standards. \r\n\r\nFly-ash disposal at Wallingford has contributed chromium, manganese, and dissolved organic carbon to water in the underlying aquifer, but the low hydraulic conductivity of the fine-grained surficial materials have kept effects to a minimum. \r\n\r\nRoad salt leached from a storage area in the Tylerville section of Haddam has increased the sodium and chloride concentrations in ground water to the extent that it is unsuitable for drinking water. The effect diminishes in wells 1000 feet downgradient from the storage site. \r\n\r\nWater from some wells adjacent to landfills in Bristol and Southington has elevated sodium, chloride, manganese, and dissolved organic carbon concentrations, and samples from two wells near industrial-sludge disposal pits in the Bristol landfill contain cyanide and phenols. \r\n\r\nGasoline odor is present in water samples from a test well 175 feet from a ruptured buried tank in Fairfield. The gasoline odor from this well was also detectable during well construction and sampling.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791596","usgsCitation":"Handman, E.H., and Bingham, J.W., 1980, Effects of selected sources of contamination on ground-water quality at seven sites in Connecticut: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1596, xii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791596.","productDescription":"xii, 75 p. :ill., maps ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142348,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1596/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37048,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1596/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696fd2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Handman, Elinor H.","contributorId":31748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Handman","given":"Elinor","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bingham, James W.","contributorId":36939,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bingham","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159483,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The standard error of estimate for predicting runoff for water year 1978 using drainage area as the independent variable was 152 percent. Indications are that reliable equations for predicating annual runoff can be developed and the standard error of estimate might be reduced significantly with additional years of record. The coefficient of regression when relating drainage area to runoff for water year 1978 was significant at the 1-percent level. Preliminary results also indicate it is feasible to predict streamflow characteristics using hyrologic soil-group classifications based on runoff potential. The standard error of estimate for predicting peak discharges with recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years using active-channel width as the independent variable averaged about 50 percent, and the regression coefficient was significant at the 1-percent level. Using drainage area to predict peak discharges resulted in a standard error of estimate that averaged about 60 percent and a regression coefficient significant at the 5-percent level. The standard error of estimate averaged about 45 percent when active-channel width and drainage area were related to peak discharges in multiple regression analyses. Fifteen drilling sites were selected that had one or more of the following characteristics: medium-to thick-bedded limestones within 200 feet of land surface, structural lows, significant streamflow gains and losses, elongated sinkholes, straight stream reaches, linear features or other surface indications of solution cavities at depth. The 15 test wells produced from less than 1 to about 600 gallons per minute and had an average yield of 68 gallons per minute, measured while pumping the wells with compressed air. The average driller-reported yield for the area is five gallons per minute. Specific capacities for the four highest yielding wells ranged from 0.6 to 357 gallons per minute per foot of drawdown after 8 hours of pumping at rates ranging from 70 to 225 gallons per minute. Additional drilling at two sites revealed extensive solution openings. At one site, drawdown in five observation wells did not exceed 8.5 feet during 48 hours of pumping at an average rate of 502 gallons per minute. The strength of metal binding to the different sedimentary binding substrates controls this effect. Statistical studies that were spatially intensive (comparing 35 stations in 17 estuaries) and temporally intensive (2 stations through 2 years time) indicate that sediments control the availability of Ag, Cd, Co, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn, and possibly Cu to clams and polychaete worms in nature. Metal concentrations removed from sediments by chemical extractants generally follow availability better than do total metal concentrations, but the specific extractant differs among different metals. Concentrations of binding substrates (Fe, Mn, organic carbon, humic substances) also statistically explain a proportion of the variance of metal concentrations in the animals, suggesting that metal partitioning among substrates in sediments is an important control on metal availability. The specific substrates which contribute to availability also differ among metals. Statistical assessment of metal form in sediments suggested that different substrates compete for the partitioning of metals, that each metal is partitioned among a variety of forms in an oxidized sediment, and that partitioning will vary with the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments. Stochastic processes are used to characterize both the spatial and temporal dependencies of seismic occurrences along a fault. Currently, only homogeneous space and time transitions are considered. The resulting process however is evolutionary and depends on the specific sequence of events over a period of time. The model provides estimates on the cumulative activity of a fault over a future time period. In addition, probabilities of occurrences of individual events along a geologic fault at some specified future time are obtained when a descritized time scale is used. The information from these evaluations is particularly useful in engineering seismic hazard computations and for social and engineering seismic risk assessments.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr801153","usgsCitation":"Kiremidjian, A.S., and Anagnos, T., 1980, A homogeneous stochastic model for earthquake occurrences: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-1153, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr801153.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405729,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1153/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142791,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/1153/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae416","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kiremidjian, Anne S.","contributorId":60649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kiremidjian","given":"Anne","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Anagnos, Thalia","contributorId":66690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anagnos","given":"Thalia","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160360,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Research Group 115 was originally proposed to IGCP in 1974 by Professor Azuma Iijima, University of Tokyo, and is now headed by James R. Hein, U.S. Geological Survey. Cooperative efforts by 86 members from 17 countries help in accomplishing Research Group 115's objectives of correlating sedimentary processes of siliceous deposits in the Pacific Basin and neighboring geosynclinal areas by means of stratigraphy, sedimentology, geochemisty, and paleontology. These correlations will allow us to estimate the geochemical silica budget in the Earth's crust; to estimate the production of silica in the marine environment through geologic time; to formulate a general rule on sedimentation of siliceous deposits in geosynclines; to increase understanding of the development of circum-Pacific orogenic belts; and to obtain basic methods to evaluate siliceous deposits of economic interest. The group agreed to focus on fine-grained siliceous deposits (cherts, siliceous shales, diatomites, and the like) and to exclude quartz sand deposits and quartzose sandstones.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr80391","usgsCitation":"Hein, J.R., 1980, Bibliography of fine-grained siliceous deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 80-391, 122 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr80391.","productDescription":"122 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408709,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0391/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141860,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1980/0391/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4fe4b07f02db62893b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hein, James R. 0000-0002-5321-899X jhein@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5321-899X","contributorId":2828,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hein","given":"James","email":"jhein@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":159669,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The canyon is the site of a new part of Interstate Highway 40. The purpose of this report is to present surface- and ground-water data collected prior to and during highway construction. Well and spring data from near the construction site are tabulated, and spring inflow in Tijeras Creek is shown. Water levels in selected wells are shown in hydrographs based on monthly measurements and continuous water level measurements. This report includes all of the data in a similar previous report (U.S. Geological Survey Open-file report 78-238), plus approximately one additional year of data.
