The surface faulting was discontinuous and of small displacement. The main rupture within the Greenville fault zone trended about N.38°W. It was at least 4.2 km long and may have extended southward to Interstate Highway 580, giving a possible length of 6.2 km; both of these lengths included more gaps than observed surface rupture. Maximum displacements measured by us were about 25 mm of right slip (including afterslip through 28 January); vertical components of as much as 50 mm were seen locally, but these included gravity effects of unknown amount. The main break within the Greenville fault zones is very close to a fault strand mapped by Herd (1977, and unpublished data). A subsidiary break within the Greenville fault zone was about 0.5 km. long, had a general trend of N.46°W., and lay 0.12 to 0.25 km east of the main break. It was characterized by extension of as much as 40 mm and right slip of as much as 20 mm. This break was no more than 25 m from a fault mapped by Herd (unpublished data). Another break within the Greenville fault zone lay about 0.3 km southwest of the projection of the main break and trended about N33°W. It was at least 0.3 km long and showed mostly extension, but at several places a right-lateral component (up to 5 mm) was seen. This break was 80 to 100 m from a strand of the Greenville fault mapped by Herd (1977). Extensional fractures within the Greenville fault zone on the frontage roads north and south of Interstate Highway 580 may be related to regional extension or other processes, but do not seem to have resulted from faulting of the usual kind. One exception in this group is a fracture at the east side of Livermore valley which showed progressive increase in right-lateral displacement in February and March, 1980, and is directly on the projection of a fault in the Greenville fault zone mapped by Herd (1977). A group of more than 20 extensional fractures in Laughlin Road 1 km north of Interstate 580 probably are related to small tectonic displacements on faults in the Greenville fault zone. They are adjacent and parallel to two faults mapped by Herd (1977), are diagonal to the road, and most of them developed between 25 and 29 January, a period that included the Ms 5.2 shock of 26 January. Observations at two locations indicate tectonic displacement on the Las Positas fault zone as mapped by Herd (1977). At Vasco Road a prominent break on a strand of the fault showed about 0.5 mm of left-lateral strike slip on 7 February. An alinement array across this and other fractures at the locality indicates about 6 mm of left-lateral displacement occurred between 21 February and 26 March. On Tesla Road several right-stepping fractures, one of which showed 1.5 mm of left-lateral strike slip, lie on or close tp previously mapped strands of the Las Positas fault zone. The processing included standard demultiplexing, deconvolution before and aftfer stack, Common Depth Point (CDP) gathers, velocity analyses every 3 km, move-out correction, stacking, time-variant, filtering, and time-variant scaling.
The released lines are over the outer edge of the Continental Shelf in the northern part of the Baltimore Canyon trough (Line 14: 140 km long and Line 15: 157 km long), over the Long Island platform. (Line 16: 313 km long), and over the Carolina platform (Line 17: 186 km long). These profiles were collected as a part of a regional grid over offshore Atlantic sedimentary basins in a continuing program to assess the resource potential by means of nonproprietary data.
These profiles, plus the velocity scans and shotpoint maps, may be viewed at U. S. Geological Survey, Quissett Campus, Woods Hole, MA. 02543, and U. S. Geological Survey, Bldg. 25, Denver Federal Center, Denver, CO. The Bureau of Land Management requested on May 3, 1979 that the U.S. Geological Survey determine the base (100-year) flood-plain limits at three sites (fig. 1) along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System Highway (Haul Road) between the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay in order to issue land-use permits. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT) has constructed maintenance camps at Coldfoot and adjacent to the Jim River near Pump Station 5. The site along the Sagavanirktok River near Pump Station 3 is under consideration as a site for potential development.
An analysis of the flood data available at nearby gaging stations, at prior flood-survey sites, and from regional flood analyses was made. The discharge of the 100-year flood was calculated for the three sites using methods described by U.S. Water Resources Council (WRC, 1977) and given in Lamke (1979). Next field examination was made of the sites. Flood-deposited debris upon the overbank flood-ways was used to determine elevations of the maximum evident flood at the three flood-prone sites mapped. The maximum evident floodmarks for these floods were at elevations and locations which indicated that they were independent of ice scars. Ice scars higher than the highest flood debris were found at the Jim River site. Flood evidence of recent peaks was also used as an aid in determining the base flood boundaries. These limits have been delineated on aerial photographs of the sites. Surveying was limited to that necessary to adequately define the base flood boundaries; step-backwater computations were not made. Although some additional pertinent information is shown on the photographs, no attempt was made to delineate areas of inadequate local drainage or seasonal problems of high ground-water tables.

The study area lies between Great South Channel to the east and Black Channel to the west, and extends from the 50-m isobath to the shelf edge.
Single-channel high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and echo-sounding profiles were collected along 941 km of trackline, sidescan sonar records were collected along 673 km of trackline. The subbottom profiles were collected by using a Huntec*system that was towed at midwater depths. Filters were set at 1 to 7 kHz. Echo-sounding records were collected by using a 60 kHz EDO Western system. A Klein stdescan sonar, set to scan 100 m to either side of the towed fish, was used to collect the sonographs.
Navigation during the survey was done by the scientific staff using Loran-C equipment. Fixes were recorded and logged at least every 15 minutes; after the cruise, they were digitized and stored on magnetic tape.

In 1978, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the State of Washington Department of Ecology, investigated the hydrology of the Sagebrush Flat area as it relates to Rattlesnake Springs.
Rattlesnake Springs and all known wells on Sagebrush Flat obtain water from basalt aquifers. The wells tap aquifers at or below the altitude of the spring discharge.
Water levels in some wells on Sagebrush Flat, and in a well 27 miles to the northeast in an area of no ground-water development, show slight fluctuations that may correspond to annual variations in precipitation. However, hydrographs of most wells on Sagebrush Flat show water-level declines and rises that correspond with the beginning and end of the pumping season. The discharge of Rattlesnake Springs started to decrease at about the beginning of the 1978 pumping season and did not start to increase until after most pumping was stopped.
The water level in deep aquifers beneath Sagebrush Flat is at a lower altitude than in shallow aquifers, and water moves down well boreholes from shallow aquifers to deeper aquifers. This downward movement of water diverts ground water that is moving toward natural discharge points such as Rattlesnake Springs, thereby decreasing the discharge at these points.

Pleistocene","docAbstract":"Knowledge of the magnitude of water-table rise during Pleistocene pluvial climates, and of the resultant shortening of groundwater flow path and reduction in unsaturated zone thickness, is mandatory for a technical evaluation of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) or other arid zone sites as repositories for high-level or transuranic radioactive wastes. The distribution of calcitic veins filling fractures in alluvium, and of tufa deposits between the Ash Meadows spring discharge area and the Nevada Test Site indicates that discharge from the regional Paleozoic carbonate aquifer during the Late( ) Pleistocene pluvial periods may have occurred at an altitude about 50 meters higher than at present and 14 kilometers northeast of Ash Meadows. Use of the underflow equation (relating discharge to transmissivity, aquifer width, and hydraulic gradient), and various assumptions regarding pluvial recharge, transmissivity, and altitude of groundwater base level, suggest possible rises in potentiometric level in the carbonate aquifer of about -90 meters beneath central Frenchman Flat. During Wisconsin time the rise probably did not exceed 30 meters. Water-level rises beneath Frenchman Flat during future pluvials are unlikely to exceed 30 meters and might even be 10 meters lower than modern levels. Neither the cited rise in potentiometric level in the regional carbonate aquifer, nor the shortened flow path during the Late( ) Pleistocene preclude utilization of the NTS as a repository for high-level or transuranic-element radioactive wastes provided other requisite conditions are met as this site. Deep water tables, attendant thick (up to several hundred meter) unsaturated zones, and long groundwater flow paths characterized the region during the Wisconsin Stage and probably throughout the Pleistocene Epoch and are likely to so characterize it during future glacial periods. These sites are operated by the municipal governments of Arecibo, Caguas, Cayey, Humacao, Mayaguez and Guayama. The bulk of waste is of domestic origin but wastes from local industries and institutions are also handled. Data were collected between February and July 1976.
Parameters measured included temperature, specific conductance, pH, color, common ions, cyanide, macronutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus species), total organic carbon, dissolved oxygen, BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), total and fecal conform, trace metals, and phenols.
The results obtained indicated that leachate from most sites is enriched in common ions, macronutrients, and trace metals. A sample obtained from runoff at the Cayey landfill was the only one with an acidic pH (5.8). It had a common ion concentration of 10,750 mg/L (milligrams per liter), or twice that found in leachate contained within the buried refuse. The leachate from the Caguas site had the highest common ion concentration (12,520 mg/L).
Maximum values for other parameters were as follows: Temperature, 33°C (or about 10°C above ambient ground-water temperature); specific conductance, 19,200 micromhos per centimeter; color, 2,200 units; cyanide, 30 ug/L (micrograms per liter); total nitrogen, 600 mg/L; total phosphorus, 4.3 mg/L; total organic carbon, 500 mg/L; 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, 5,540 mg/L; chemical oxygen demand, 3,000 mg/L; total coliform bacteria, 410,000 colonies per 100 milliliters; fecal coliform bacteria, 14,000 colonies per 100 milliliters; total arsenic, 54 ug/L; total cadmium, 15 ug/L; total chromium, 1,600 ug/L; total lead, 1,10C ug/L; total mercury, 2.6 ug/L; total nickel, 1,300 ug/L; and total phenols, 1,100 ug/L.
Pollution of water resources is limited to the periphery of the sites. A major problem throughout seems to be related to operating methods. Under the conditions found, large quantities of rainwater and runoff could be available for leachate production. Generation of leachate may not be significant at present probably because of the recent establishment of the landfills (less than 5 years).
Monitoring at these or similar sites in Puerto Rico can be limited to defining present baseline water-quality conditions and implementation of a sampling program. Baseline data could be limited to specific conductance, pH, color, common ions, and dissolved oxygen. A scheduled sampling program could be limited to specific conductance readings and measurement of concentration of bicarbonate, chloride, and dissolved oxygen.

These data were obtained during the June 1975 cruise of the R/V ASTERIAS as part of a continuing regional study of the Massachusetts offshore area to assess potential mineral resources, to evaluate environmental impact of mining of resources and of offshore disposal of solid waste and harbor dredge-spoil materials, and to map the offshore geology and shallow structure.
The data were obtained by using a surface-towed EG&G Unit Pulse Boomer* (300 joules: 400 Hz-8kHz frequency) sound source. Reflected acoustic energy was detected by a 4.6-m, a-element hydrophone array, was amplified, was actively filtered (400 Hz-4kHz bandpass), and was graphically displayed on an EPC* dry paper recorder at a 0.25-second sweep rate. System resolution was generally 1 to 1.5 m. Navigational control was provided by Loran C (positional accuracy within 0.2 km) and was supplemented by radar and visual fixes. Positional information was logged at 15-minute intervals and at major course changes.

Two hundred twenty-four kilometers of closely spaced side-scan sonograph data have been collected from eastern Rhode Island Sound and Vineyard Sound, Mass., by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the New England Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These data were obtained during the August 1976 cruise of the B./V A. E. VERRILL as part of a continuing regional study of the Massachusetts offshore area to determine the suitability and potential environmental effect of ocean dumping of large volumes of harbor dredge-spoil material.
Specifically, as part of a proposed Federal Harbor improvement and maintenance dredging of Fall River and Mt. Hope Bay, Mass. under the jurisdiction of the Army Corps of Engineers, the disposal of the resultant dredge spoil is planned for an ocean dump site located in eastern Rhode Island Sound. The proposed site is also under consideration as a \"regional\" disposal grounds to be utilized by State and private organizations performing dredging work authorized by the Corps.
The data were obtained by using a Klein Side Scan Towfish* (sonar frequency, 100 kHz; pulse length, 0.1 msec). Signal returns from the starboard and port scans were automatically tuned, texture-enhanced, and printed centerout on 2 channels of a 3-channel Klein* wet-paper graphic recorder. Scan ranges of 75 m and 150 m were used. For comparison of graphic display, incoming signals from the starboard scan were also recorded on the third channel using a manual (nonautomatic) tuning mode. Navigational control was provided by Loran -C (positional accuracy within 0.2 km). Positional information was logged at 15-minute intervals and at major course changes.

Geological Survey (USGS) contracted with Geophysical Services, Inc. (GSI) for GSI to collect 4,813 km of 48-channel seismic-reflection profiles along the continental margin between North Carolina and Maine. Fifteen lines were acquired perpendicular to the margin Clines 18 through 32), and six lines were acquired parallel to the margin Clines 33 through 38). The profiles were shot by the Motor Vessel (MV) CARINO and MV CECIL GREEN between May and November 1978. A 3,600-long hydrophone streamer was used; it was composed of 24 groups of 100-m length each near the ship, followed by 24 groups of 50-mlength each. Tuned airgun arrays totaling 2,000 and 1,400 cubic inches of air were used by the MV- CARINO and MV CECIL GREEN, respectively.
The profiles were stacked by GSI and displayed in conventional time-variant scaled format to 12 seconds of recording time with vertical scales of .2.5 inches per second and horizontal scales of 1.2 km per inch. Additional protessing was applied to Line 25 across the Baltimore Canyon Trough and Line 32 across the Carolina Trough. Data collected along Line 25 over the Outer Shelf, Slope and upper Rise were restacked with 1 1/2-km-spaced velocity analyses, signature deconvolution, deep-water multiple deconvolution, velocity filtering Con shelf only), and time migration. The restacked part and remaining parts of Line 25 were converted to depth sections having a vertical scale of 1.2 km per inch (vertical exaggeration: 2/1). Data collected along two parts of Line 32 were also restacked with signature and deep-water multiple deconvolution. Line 32 was also converted to a depth section except for the first 80 km near shore.
