Samples were collected over the period March-November 1977 at approximately monthly intervals at 36 stations. The stations were located along the axis of the Bay from Calaveras Point in South San Francisco Bay to the town of Rio Vista on the Sacramento River. The samples were analyzed for the following core parameters: salinity, temperature, light transmission, chlorophyll a fluorescence, light extinction, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, pCO<sub>2</sub>, orthophosphate, nitrate+nitrite, nitrite, ammonia, and silicate. Additional analyses were performed on selected discrete samples collected for particulate organic carbon, chlorophyll a, alkalinity, total CO<sub>2</sub> and suspended particulate matter. The results of these analyses and the analytical methods used are documented in this report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Data were obtained from various Federal and State agencies and private sources to document the magnitude of flooding from 1875 to 1978. The assembled data include annual maximum flood stages and discharges for the period of record at gaging stations, and flood stages at numerous staff gages, crest-stage gages, and high-water mark sites throughout the study area. Tabulations of floodflow measurements made at or near gaging stations, including the cross-sectional area of the channel and velocities, are presented. Cross sections of the Sacramento River near Chico Landing surveyed in 1978 and earlier surveys to show the size of Butte Basin have been included. A detailed list of references is presented giving the sources of the data included in this report. Many of these sources present detailed descriptions of flooding at various sites. Concentrations of dissolved chemical constituents in surface water and contents of chlorinated hydrocarbons in streambed samples in the watershed were generally less than water-quality alert limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, except in Crooked Creek. During sampling, this stream was affected by sewage, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and two chemical spills. Ranges of on-site field measurements were: specific conductance, from 102 to 1,060 micromhos per centimeter at 25 Celcius; water temperature, from 7.0 to 31.8 Celsius; pH, from 6.8 to 8.9; dissolved oxygen, from 2.5 to 14.9 milligrams per liter and from 27 to 148% saturation; and instantaneous discharge from 0 to 101 cubic feet per second. Concentrations of most dissolved-inorganic constituents (heavy metals and major ions) and dissolved solids did not vary significantly from one sampling period to the next at each site. Dissolved constituents whose concentrations varied significantly were iron, manganese, organic carbon, ammonia, nitrate plus nitrite, organic nitrogen, Kjeldahl nitrogen, and phosphorus. Concentrations of dissolved manganese, organic carbon, dissolved nitrite plus nitrate, and suspended sediment varied seasonally at most sites. The purpose of these logging measurements is to provide in-situ physical properties information that is not commercially available on drill hole UE25a-3. Well logs are presented in this paper for dual-detector density, normal resistivity, gamma-ray, neutron-neutron, induced polarization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These data are analyzed for correlations with the core lithology. Hole-to-surface measurements made from drill hole UE25a-3 indicate the presence of two resistive bodies at depth. Following passage of the National Reclamation Act of 1902, a notable increase in investigations of water resources began throughout the Western United States. Although Idaho enacted laws in 1903 to activate stream-gaging programs, it was no until 1909 that the State entered into a formal agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey from this work. The surficial aquifer is the main source of freshwater for agricultural and urban uses in the area. The geologic framework of the aquifer is displayed by contour mapping and lithologic cross sections to provide water managers with a better understanding of the natural restraints that may be imposed on future development. The surficial aquifer is primarily sand, limestone, shell, silt, and clay deposited during the Pleistocene and Pliocene Epochs. The aquifer is unconfined and under water-table conditions in most of the area, but locally, artesian conditions exits where discontinuous clay layers act as confining units. Impermeable and semipermeable clays and marls of the Tamiami (lower Pliocene) and Hawthorn Formations (Miocene) unconformably underlie the surficial aquifer and form its base. Contour lines showing the altitude of the base of the aquifer indicate extensive erosion of the Miocene sediments prior to deposition of the aquifer materials. As part of this National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program, the U.S. Geological Survey is conducting a regional study of the geohydrology of the northern Louisiana salt-dome basin. Field studies involving the collection of data began in 1977. Data-collection networks were established for both ground- and surface-water sources in the vicinity of two salt domes, Rayburns and Vacherie.</p><p>Ground-water data collection involved measuring water levels and sampling existing production wells and test wells drilled by the Louisiana State University Institute for Environmental Studies. Samples were analyzed for one or more of the following categories of chemical constituents: inorganic, trace metal, and radiochemical.</p><p>A network of surface-water stations was set up for measuring discharge and collecting periodic samples. Initial sampling was for analysis for inorganic chemical constituents and radioactive elements.
