A procedure is introduced for the prediction of dissolved-solids and sulfate-ion concentrations in streams draining strip-mined areas as functions of the percentage of the drainage area that has been strip mined. These relationships are expressed by regression equations computed from data collected in streams draining strip-mined areas of Cherokee and Crawford Counties in southeast Kansas.

To determine if impaired water-quality conditions existed, samples were collected at several sites above and below major point-source waste discharges near Burley, Idaho. Data collected for this study indicate some water-quality impairment within the study reach. At site 15 near Milner Dam, dissolved oxygen was below the 90 percent saturation standard prescribed by the Idaho water-quality standards. The total coliform and fecal coliform standards were exceeded at about one-third of the sites sampled on the main stem of the Snake River. Un-ionized ammonia concentration exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water-quality criteria at one site near Burley. Concentrations of trace metals, insecticides, and herbicides were all low; none exceeded existing criteria. Chemical and physical analyses were performed upon core or bottom material and native-water (receiving-water) samples from these sites as well as upon elutriate samples of the mixture of sediment and receiving water. The general objectives of the project, of which this work is a part, are to provide an understanding of the nature, location, and extent of the engineering and environmental concerns in potential coal-development areas of the Cook Inlet region, Alaska. The geotechnical and geophysical logs presented in this report provide some of the basic physical-property and engineering data needed to evaluate geologic hazards, and to predict the response of geologic materials to large-scale coal mining and related development in the Capps coal field of the Beluga coal area. Specifically, the information may be used to help determine such things as natural- and cut-slope stability, spoil-pile stability, ground response to seismic activity, blasting effects, excavatability, bulking characteristics, ground-water conditions, and erosion potential.

This study of the hydrology and geochemistry of the area used groundwater solute-transport-modeling techniques to investigate the possible impact of the mines on water quality. Maps of the extent and structure of the aquifer were prepared and show that a saturated thickness of 2,000 feet occurs in the northeast part of the basin. Ground-water recharge in the upland areas in the east, south, and west parts of the basin moves down into deeper zones in the aquifer and laterally to the discharge areas along Piceance and Yellow Creeks. The saline zone and the unsaturated zone provide the majority of the dissolved solids found in the ground water. Precipitation, ion-exchange, and oxidation-reduction reactions are also occurring in the aquifer. Model simulations of groundwater pumpage in tracts C-a and C-b indicate that the altered direction of groundwater movement near the pumped mines will cause an improvement in groundwater quality near the mines and a degradation of water quality downgradient from the tracts. Model simulations of mine leaching in tract C-a and C-b indicate that equal rates of mine leaching in the tracts will produce much different effects on the water quality in the basin. Tract C-a, by virtue of its remote location from perennial streams, will primarily degrade the groundwater quality over a large area to the northeast of the tract. Tract C-b, by contrast, will primarily degrade the surface-water quality in Piceance Creek, with only localized effects on the groundwater quality. The lakes and reservoirs sampled range from large reservoirs in the eastern part of the State to smaller natural lakes in the higher western parts of the Colorado Plateaus. The smallest body of water sampled was Anderson Reservoir No. 1 with a surface area of 47 acres in Mesa County, and the largest was Najajo Reservoir with a surface area of 15,600 acres in Archuleta County. The report includes physical, chemical, and biological water-quality data collected as a part of each lake or reservoir reconnaissance. Also included are data on drainage area, water-surface altitude, surface area,depth, storage capacity, and principal uses, obtained from various governmental agencies or the owner or regulating agency of each lake or reservoir. A subjective evaluation of the trophic (enrichment) state is presented based on nutrient and phytoplankton concentrations and the dissolved-oxygen distribution. In addition, a numerical trophic-state index, based on Secchi-disk transparency (a measure of light penetration) is reported, to show trophic comparisons between lakes and reservoirs. The western boundary is the New Hampshire State line, and the eastern boundary is the Franklin-Somerset County line.
