Hydrogeologic data were collected in selected coal areas of east-central Montana to provide a basis for evaluating the effects of future coal development on the groundwater resources. Inventory records for 916 domestic, stock, public supply, commercial, and test wells are tabulated in the report; the data were collected principally from 1975 through 1976. The locations of the wells are shown on a map at a scale of 1:250,000. Lithologic logs are also included for 149 wells. Chemical analyses of water samples from selected wells consist of 167 samples analyzed for major cations and anions and 24 samples analyzed for miscellaneous constituents.

As a result, ash fell in the Bull Run watershed, Oregon, some 50 miles to the south, the principal water-supply source for the Portland area. Samples from precipitation collectors and from stream sites in the Bull Run watershed were collected on several dates during May and June 1980. Analyses were made and are tabulated for pH, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, and nitrate plus nitrite. Field pH values of the precipitation ranged from 4.0 to 5.6 pH units and the stream samples from 6.7 to 7.5 units. Particle-size analyses for ash samples collected in the Bull Run watershed and Portland, Oregon , are also shown. Volcanic events, precipitation and high-altitude speeds for northerly winds are given for May 18-June 15, 1980.

Temperatures of the groundwater range from 30 degrees to more than 80 degrees Celsius. Thermal waters are a sodium carbonate or bicarbonate type; nonthermal waters are a calcium bicarbonate. Chemical geothermometers indicate maximum reservoir temperatures near 100 degrees Celsius. Stable-isotope data indicate recharge to the system occurred when climate averaged 3 degrees to 5 degrees Celsius colder than at present; such conditions existed during Holocene glacial advances 3,000 and more than 8,000 years ago. Residence time calculated on the basis of reservoir volume and thermal-water discharge is 3,400 to 6,800 years. Considering estimates of heat flux in and heat discharged by conduction and convection, about 25.0 cubic feet per second, or about 18,000 acre-feet per year, of 50 degrees Celsius water is required to transport excess heat from the system advectively in groundwater. The conceptual model is one where water has circulated thousands, even tens of thousands, of years. Within model constraints, reservoir thermal energy for this geothermal system is 130x10 to the 18th power calories. The quality-of-water data were collected during a period of generally law streamflow and seasonally high air temperatures. These data show that the quality of water in Yockanookany River was generally good. The dissolved-solids concentrations were less than 50 milligrams per liter, and the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were low. Ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen concentrations were higher downstream than upstream. Ammonia nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.10 to 0.40 milligrams per liter and total phosphorous concentrations ranged from 0.14 to 0.43 milligrams per liter at the downstream site. The 5-day biochemical oxygen demand in the river entering and leaving the study reach generally was less than 2.5 and 6.0 milligrams per liter, respectively. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations generally were higher at the upstream site than the downstream site and were at levels that could support aquatic life at both sites. Several water samples collected at the downstream site contained high fecal bacteria densities and there was some evidence of the presence of wastes of human origin. It was determined from a time-of-travel study that the rate of solute travel was 0.15 mile per hour at law streamflow. A peak dye concentration traveled through a 3.3 mile reach of Yockanookany River in 221/2 hours.

L'OLONNOIS as part of the Atlantic Margin Coring Project (AMCOR) of the U.S. Geological Survey, July-September 1976","docAbstract":"In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey undertook a program to sample the eastern United States Shelf for stratigraphic information by drilling a set of core holes. Results of this Atlantic Margin Coring Program (AMCOR) have been reported by Hathaway and others. Sites were chosen from seismic-reflection data and were reviewed by a safety panel to minimize the risk of penetrating any hydrocarbon accumulation which might lead to environmental contamination.
The M-V-L'OLONNOIS, the service ship for the drilling operation, was fitted with seismic-reflection profiling equipment (listed below), to run seismic-reflection profiles before drilling began on each hole. This provided additional assurance that no closed structures would be penetrated and allowed minor adjustment with the site selection. A total of 491 km of high-resolution seismic profiles was collected on 22 sites.

Geological Survey","docAbstract":"The U.S. Geological Survey has developed an oilspill risk analysis model to aid in estimating the environmental hazards of developing oil resources in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lease areas. The large, computerized model analyzes the probability of spill occurrence, as well as the likely paths or trajectories of spills in relation to the locations of recreational and biological resources which may be vulnerable. The analytical methodology can easily incorporate estimates of weathering rates , slick dispersion, and possible mitigating effects of cleanup. The probability of spill occurrence is estimated from information on the anticipated level of oil production and method and route of transport. Spill movement is modeled in Monte Carlo fashion with a sample of 500 spills per season, each transported by monthly surface current vectors and wind velocities sampled from 3-hour wind transition matrices. Transition matrices are based on historic wind records grouped in 41 wind velocity classes, and are constructed seasonally for up to six wind stations. Locations and monthly vulnerabilities of up to 31 categories of environmental resources are digitized within an 800,000 square kilometer study area. Model output includes tables of conditional impact probabilities (that is, the probability of hitting a target, given that a spill has occurred), as well as probability distributions for oilspills occurring and contacting environmental resources within preselected vulnerability time horizons. Together the known and hypothetical occurrences range from a source in rhyolite magma, through porphyry-type deposits, hydrothermal vein deposits, dispersed hydrothermal deposits, and after transport in ground and surface water, to roll-front or sedimentary trap-deposits in basin-fill sediments. To date, only the hydrothermal vein environment has been productive, but billions of pounds of uranium were available in all other environments, and if proper circumstances occurred, significant concentrations probably exist there too. The intracaldera fill of the Mount Belknap caldera and sediment-filled basins adjoining the Tushar Mountains are especially favorable for the undiscovered uranium that may be expected.

Basing the model on the Lagrangian, rather than the Eulerian, reference frame greatly reduces the numerical problems associated with solving the advective terms of the convective-diffusion equation. The model contains almost no numerical dispersion, is conceptually simple, and is relatively easy to code. Model results closely simulated dye concentrations measured in the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, Ga. under highly unsteady flow conditions.
