To date, studies of regional or global earthquake catalogs have had only modest successes in identifying tidal triggering. We posit that the smallest events that may provide additional evidence of triggering go unidentified and thus we developed a technique to improve the identification of very small magnitude events. We identify events applying a method known as inter-station seismic coherence where we prioritize detection and discrimination over characterization. Here we show tidal triggering of earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault. We find the complex interaction of semi-diurnal and fortnightly tidal periods exposes both stress threshold and critical state behavior. Our findings reveal earthquake nucleation processes and pore pressure conditions – properties of faults that are difficult to measure, yet extremely important for characterizing earthquake physics and seismic hazards.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.epsl.2016.12.014","usgsCitation":"Delorey, A., van der Elst, N., and Johnson, P., 2017, Tidal triggering of earthquakes suggests poroelastic behavior on the San Andreas Fault: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 460, p. 164-170, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2016.12.014.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"164","endPage":"170","ipdsId":"IP-068597","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470100,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://www.osti.gov/biblio/1341854","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":347908,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Andreas Fault","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              36.4\n            ],\n            [\n              -121,\n              36.4\n            ],\n            [\n              -121,\n              35.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"460","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59f98bb8e4b0531197af9ffb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Delorey, Andrew","contributorId":189149,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Delorey","given":"Andrew","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714833,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"van der Elst, Nicholas 0000-0002-3812-1153 nvanderelst@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3812-1153","contributorId":147858,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"van der Elst","given":"Nicholas","email":"nvanderelst@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":234,"text":"Earthquake Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":714832,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnson, Paul","contributorId":189150,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Johnson","given":"Paul","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":714834,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Here we evaluated 10 terrestrial ecosystem models for their estimates of net primary productivity (NPP) and responses to historical climate change in permafrost regions in the Northern Hemisphere. In comparison with the satellite estimate from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS; 246 ± 6 g C m−2 yr−1), most models produced higher NPP (309 ± 12 g C m−2 yr−1) over the permafrost region during 2000–2009. By comparing the simulated gross primary productivity (GPP) with a flux tower-based database, we found that although mean GPP among the models was only overestimated by 10% over 1982–2009, there was a twofold discrepancy among models (380 to 800 g C m−2 yr−1), which mainly resulted from differences in simulated maximum monthly GPP (GPPmax). Most models overestimated C use efficiency (CUE) as compared to observations at both regional and site levels. Further analysis shows that model variability of GPP and CUE are nonlinearly correlated to variability in specific leaf area and the maximum rate of carboxylation by the enzyme Rubisco at 25°C (Vcmax_25), respectively. The models also varied in their sensitivities of NPP, GPP, and CUE to historical changes in climate and atmospheric CO2 concentration. These results indicate that model predictive ability of the C cycle in permafrost regions can be improved by better representation of the processes controlling CUE and GPPmax as well as their sensitivity to climate change.
","language":"English","publisher":"AGU","doi":"10.1002/2016JG003384","usgsCitation":"Xia, J., McGuire, A.D., Lawrence, D., Burke, E.J., Chen, G., Chen, X., Delire, C., Koven, C., MacDougall, A., Peng, S., Rinke, A., Saito, K., Zhang, W., Alkama, R., Bohn, T.J., Ciais, P., Decharme, B., Gouttevin, I., Hajima, T., Hayes, D.J., Huang, K., Ji, D., Krinner, G., Lettenmaier, D.P., Miller, P.A., Moore, J., Smith, B., Sueyoshi, T., Shi, Z., Yan, L., Liang, J., Jiang, L., Zhang, Q., and Luo, Y., 2017, Terrestrial ecosystem model performance in simulating productivity and its vulnerability to climate change in the northern permafrost region: Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, v. 122, no. 2, p. 430-446, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016JG003384.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"430","endPage":"446","ipdsId":"IP-070881","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470091,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2016jg003384","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348457,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"122","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a0425bce4b0dc0b45b453b0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Xia, Jianyang","contributorId":167809,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Xia","given":"Jianyang","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721176,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McGuire, A. We examined a decade-long data set of inter-individual pectoral fin contact exchanges to better understand how dolphins share information via tactile contact. Sex and age are significant factors in pectoral fin contact within non-kin dolphin dyads. Adult females shared more pectoral fin contacts with other adult females, while younger females showed no pattern of contact. Males shared more pectoral fin contacts with other males as juveniles and as adults, but showed no difference in the number of touches versus rubs as pectoral fin contacts with other males. Whether in the role of initiator as rubber or initiator as rubbee, male dolphins again preferred other males. These results support the notion that dolphins, especially male dolphins, might use pectoral fin contact as one tool in their repertoire for social bonding to establish, maintain and manage their inter-individual relationships. Additionally, it is also likely that the exchange of pectoral fin contact is developed and refined as individuals age, mature socially, and establish their place within a fission-fusion society.
","language":"English","publisher":"Animal Behavior and Cognition","doi":"10.12966/abc.03.02.2017","usgsCitation":"Dudzinski, K., and Ribic, C., 2017, Pectoral fin contact as a mechanism for social bonding among dolphins : Animal Behavior and Cognition, v. 4, no. 1, p. 30-48, https://doi.org/10.12966/abc.03.02.2017.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"30","endPage":"48","ipdsId":"IP-076066","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470093,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.12966/abc.03.02.2017","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348718,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60fc1be4b06e28e9c23a4b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dudzinski, Kathleen","contributorId":199697,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Dudzinski","given":"Kathleen","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":719790,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ribic, Christine 0000-0003-2583-1778 caribic@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2583-1778","contributorId":147952,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ribic","given":"Christine","email":"caribic@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":5068,"text":"Midwest Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":719789,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This method involved using 80th percentile linear quantile regressions to relate six flow metrics to the diversity of riffle-run fish and benthic Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) richness. All twelve flow-biology relationships were found to be significant, with both benthos and fish showing negative responses to ecodeficits and reductions in flow. The responses of benthic richness to reduced flows were consistent and generally greater than that of fish diversity. However, the riffle-run fish guild showed the greatest reductions in diversity in response to summer ecodeficits. The directional consistency and differential seasonal sensitivities of fish and invertebrates to reductions in flow highlight the need to consider seasonality when managing flows. In addition, all relationships were linear, and therefore do not provide clear thresholds to support ecological flow determinations and flow prescriptions to prevent the degradation of fish and invertebrate communities in North Carolina rivers and streams. A method of setting ecological flows based on the magnitude of change in biological condition that is acceptable to society is explored.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Water One way to address that challenge is through more integrated analysis of chemical monitoring and biological effects data. In the present study, water samples from five locations near two municipal wastewater treatment plants in the St. Croix River basin, on the border of MN and WI, USA, were analyzed for 127 organic contaminants. Known chemical-gene interactions were used to develop site-specific knowledge assembly models (KAMs) and formulate hypotheses concerning possible biological effects associated with chemicals detected in water samples from each location. Additionally, hepatic gene expression data were collected for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed in situ, for 12 d, at each location. Expression data from oligonucleotide microarrays were analyzed to identify functional annotation terms enriched among the differentially-expressed probes. The general nature of many of the terms made hypothesis formulation on the basis of the transcriptome-level response alone difficult. However, integrated analysis of the transcriptome data in the context of the site-specific KAMs allowed for evaluation of the likelihood of specific chemicals contributing to observed biological responses. Thirteen chemicals (atrazine, carbamazepine, metformin, thiabendazole, diazepam, cholesterol, p-cresol, phenytoin, omeprazole, ethyromycin, 17β-estradiol, cimetidine, and estrone), for which there was statistically significant concordance between occurrence at a site and expected biological response as represented in the KAM, were identified. While not definitive, the approach provides a line of evidence for evaluating potential cause-effect relationships between components of a complex mixture of contaminants and biological effects data, which can inform subsequent monitoring and investigation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental Pollution","doi":"10.1016/j.envpol.2016.12.005","usgsCitation":"Schroeder, A.L., Martinovic-Weigelt, D., Ankley, G., Lee, K., Garcia-Reyero, N., Perkins, E.J., Schoenfuss, H.L., and Villeneuve, D.L., 2017, Prior knowledge-based approach for associating contaminants with biological effects: A case study in the St. Croix River basin, MN, WI, USA: Environmental Pollution, v. 221, p. 427-436, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2016.12.005.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"427","endPage":"436","ipdsId":"IP-065526","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470101,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/6139436","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348551,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota, Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"St. Croix River Basin","volume":"221","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a06c8d0e4b09af898c8613c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schroeder, Anthony L.","contributorId":173596,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schroeder","given":"Anthony","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":6914,"text":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":12503,"text":"University of Minnesota - Saint Paul","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721514,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Martinovic-Weigelt, Dalma","contributorId":173655,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Martinovic-Weigelt","given":"Dalma","affiliations":[{"id":6748,"text":"University of St. Thomas","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721515,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Ankley, Gerald T.","contributorId":177970,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Ankley","given":"Gerald T.","affiliations":[{"id":13485,"text":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Duluth, MN","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721516,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Lee, Kathy 0000-0002-7683-1367 klee@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7683-1367","contributorId":2538,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"Kathy","email":"klee@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":721517,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Garcia-Reyero, Natalia","contributorId":43961,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Garcia-Reyero","given":"Natalia","affiliations":[{"id":26924,"text":"USArmy Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, MS","active":true,"usgs":false},{"id":17848,"text":"Mississippi State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Perkins, Edward J.","contributorId":89063,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Perkins","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":26924,"text":"USArmy Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, MS","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Schoenfuss, Heiko L.","contributorId":76409,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schoenfuss","given":"Heiko","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":13317,"text":"Saint Cloud State University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Villeneuve, Daniel L.","contributorId":32091,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Villeneuve","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":13485,"text":"U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Duluth, MN","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721521,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8}]}}

Polar bears Ursus maritimus in the southern Beaufort Sea have increasingly used land for maternal denning. To aid in detecting denning behavior, we developed an objective method to identify polar bear denning events using temperature sensor data collected by satellite-linked transmitters deployed on adult females between 1985 and 2013. We then applied this method to determine whether southern Beaufort Sea polar bears have continued to increase land denning with recent sea-ice loss and examined whether sea-ice conditions affect the distribution of dens between pack-ice and coastal substrates. Because land use in summer and autumn has also increased, we examined potential associations between summering substrate and denning substrate. Statistical process control methods applied to temperature-sensor data identified denning events with 94.5% accuracy in comparison to direct observations (n = 73) and 95.7% accuracy relative to subjective classifications based on temperature, location, and activity sensor data (n = 116). We found an increase in land-based denning during the study period. The frequency of land denning was directly related to the distance that sea ice retreated from the coast. Among females that denned, all 14 that summered on land subsequently denned there, whereas 29% of the 69 bears summering on ice denned on land. These results suggest that denning on land may continue to increase with further loss of sea ice. While the effects that den substrate have on nutrition, energetics, and reproduction are unclear, more polar bears denning onshore will likely increase human-bear interactions.
","language":"English","publisher":"Inter-Research","doi":"10.3354/meps12000","usgsCitation":"Olson, J.W., Rode, K.D., Eggett, D.L., Smith, T.S., Wilson, R.R., Durner, G.M., Fischbach, A., Atwood, T.C., and Douglas, D., 2017, Collar temperature sensor data reveal long-term patterns in southern Beaufort Sea polar bear den distribution on pack ice and land: Marine Ecology Progress Series, v. 564, p. 211-224, https://doi.org/10.3354/meps12000.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"211","endPage":"224","ipdsId":"IP-076135","costCenters":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":438441,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/F7BP00Z5","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Denning Behavior Classifications Using Temperature Sensor Data on Collars Deployed on Polar Bears in the Southern Beaufort Sea, 1986-2013"},{"id":349283,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Beaufort Sea","volume":"564","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a60fc1be4b06e28e9c23a3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Olson, Jay W","contributorId":200778,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Olson","given":"Jay","email":"","middleInitial":"W","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":723307,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rode, Karyn D. 0000-0002-3328-8202 krode@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3328-8202","contributorId":5053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rode","given":"Karyn","email":"krode@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":723306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Eggett, Dennis L.","contributorId":191388,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Eggett","given":"Dennis","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":723308,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Smith, T. Estimating the distribution and abundance of colonizing species is critical for efficient management or conservation. We describe a statistical framework for simultaneously estimating spatiotemporal occupancy and abundance dynamics of a colonizing species. Montane landscapes are characterized by low wetland densities, rugged topographies, and cold climates. Consequently, aquatic-dependent and low-vagility ectothermic species (e.g., pool-breeding amphibians) may exhibit unique ecological associations in montane landscapes. We evaluated the relative importance of breeding- and landscape-scale features associated with spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) and wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) wetland occupancy in Maine's Upper Montane-Alpine Zone ecoregion, and we determined whether models performed better when the inclusive landscape-scale covariates were estimated with topography-weighted or circular buffers. We surveyed 135 potential breeding sites during May 2013–June 2014 and evaluated environmental relationships with multi-season implicit dynamics occupancy models. Breeding site occupancy by both species was influenced solely by breeding-scale habitat features. Spotted salamander occupancy probabilities increased with previous or current beaver (Castor canadensis) presence, and models generally were better supported when the inclusive landscape-scale covariates were estimated with topography-weighted rather than circular buffers. Wood frog occupancy probabilities increased with site area and percent shallows, but neither buffer type was better supported than the other. Model rank order and support varied between buffer types, but model inferences did not. Our results suggest pool-breeding amphibian conservation in montane Maine include measures to maintain beaver populations and large wetlands with proportionally large areas of shallows ≤1-m deep. Inconsistencies between our study and previous studies substantiate the value of region-specific research for augmenting species’ conservation management plans and suggest the application of out-of-region inferences may promote ineffective conservation.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/jwmg.21184","usgsCitation":"Groff, L.A., Loftin, However, many investigations into trends in water temperatures use regression methods that assume long-term monotonic changes in temperature, when in fact changes are likely to be nonmonotonic. Therefore, our objective was to highlight the need and provide an example of an analytical method to better quantify the short-term, nonmonotonic temporal changes in thermal habitat that are likely necessary to determine the effects of changing thermal conditions on fish populations and communities. To achieve this objective, this study uses Bayesian dynamic linear models (DLMs) to examine seasonal trends in river water temperatures from sites located in the eastern and western United States, regions that have dramatically different riverine habitats and fish communities. We estimated the annual rate of change in water temperature and found little evidence of seasonal changes in water temperatures in the eastern U.S. We found more evidence of warming for river sites located in the western U.S., particularly during the fall and winter seasons. Use of DLMs provided a more detailed view of temporal dynamics in river thermal habitat compared to more traditional methods by quantifying year-to-year changes and associated uncertainty, providing managers with the information needed to adapt decision making to short-term changes in habitat conditions that may be necessary for conserving aquatic resources in the face of a changing climate.
","language":"English","publisher":"MDPI","doi":"10.3390/w9020090","usgsCitation":"Wagner, T., Midway, S.R., Whittier, J.B., DeWeber, J.T., and Paukert, C.P., 2017, Annual changes in seasonal river water temperatures in the eastern and western United States: Water, v. 9, no. 2, 90; 13 p., https://doi.org/10.3390/w9020090.","productDescription":"90; 13 p.","ipdsId":"IP-071167","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470084,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.3390/w9020090","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":348596,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Upper Colorado River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.6650390625,\n              36.914764288955936\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.58935546875,\n              36.914764288955936\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.58935546875,\n              40.97989806962013\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.6650390625,\n              40.97989806962013\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.6650390625,\n              36.914764288955936\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.4638671875,\n              37.33522435930639\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.37744140625,\n              37.33522435930639\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.37744140625,\n              42.391008609205045\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4638671875,\n              42.391008609205045\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.4638671875,\n              37.33522435930639\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-04","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a06c8d1e4b09af898c8614a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wagner, Tyler 0000-0003-1726-016X twagner@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1726-016X","contributorId":1050,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wagner","given":"Tyler","email":"twagner@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":719126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Midway, Stephen R.","contributorId":172159,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Midway","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721645,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Whittier, Joanna B.","contributorId":53151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Whittier","given":"Joanna","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721646,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"DeWeber, Jefferson T.","contributorId":199675,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"DeWeber","given":"Jefferson","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721647,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Paukert, Craig P. 0000-0002-9369-8545 cpaukert@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9369-8545","contributorId":147821,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paukert","given":"Craig","email":"cpaukert@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":411,"text":"National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":719127,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

In the present study, size at age, von Bertalanffy growth parameters, population age distributions, and precision and bias in age assessment based on scales and sectioned otoliths were compared between ecotypes and among populations of Rainbow Smelt. To compare the ecotypes, we collected spawning adults from four anadromous and three landlocked populations in Maine during spring 2014. A significant bias was identified in only one of four scale comparisons but in four of seven otolith comparisons; however, a comparable level of precision was indicated. Anadromous populations had larger and more variable size at age and von Bertalanffy growth parameters than landlocked fish. Populations were composed of ages 1–4; six populations were dominated by age-2 or age-3 individuals, and one population was dominated by age-1 fish. These data suggest the presence of considerable plasticity among populations. We drilled continuous cores of the entire alluvial section in the hanging wall of each structure, performed detailed core descriptions and analyses, and obtained three OSL ages from each core. The Meeman‐Shelby fault core consists of 36 m of 4.3–5.2‐ka Holocene alluvium overlying 4 m of 14.3‐ka Kennett alluvium that in turn overlies the upper part of Eocene Claiborne Group sediments at a depth of 41 m. Seismic reflection indicates that the basal (Kennett) alluvium at the Meeman‐Shelby fault is displaced ∼28  m across the Meeman‐Shelby fault, which equates to a time‐averaged vertical displacement rate of 2  mm/yr within the last 14.3 ka. The Joiner ridge horst core consists, in descending order, of 11 m of 6.3‐ka Holocene alluvium, 14 m of 11.5‐ka Morehouse alluvium, a paleosol, 6 m of Kennett alluvium, and 4 m of 20.3‐ka Sikeston alluvium that in turn overlies the upper part of Eocene Claiborne Group sediments at a depth of 36 m. Lignite exploration drilling conducted in the 1970s indicates that basal (Sikeston) alluvium is displaced ∼20  m across the eastern bounding fault of the Joiner ridge horst, resulting in a time‐averaged vertical displacement rate of ∼1  mm/yr within the last 20.3 ka. The hydrologic system of the dry valleys is linked to climate with ephemeral streams that flow from glacial melt during the austral summer. Past climate variations have strongly influenced the closed-basin, chemically stratified lakes on the valley floor. Results of previous work point to important roles for both in-stream processes (e.g., mineral weathering, precipitation and dissolution of salts) and in-lake processes (e.g., mixing with paleo-seawater and calcite precipitation) in determining the geochemistry of these lakes. These processes have a significant influence on calcium (Ca) biogeochemistry in this aquatic ecosystem, and thus variations in Ca stable isotope compositions of the waters can aid in validating the importance of these processes. A lack of detailed information on the nonbreeding distributions, migration routes, or timing of migration among populations hampers our ability to identify population processes outside the breeding period. We used geolocators to track annual movements of 21 Golden-winged Warblers from 3 North American breeding locations experiencing varying population trends to investigate the potential for nonbreeding site factors to influence breeding populations. We used the template-fit method to estimate locations of individual warblers throughout the year. Geolocator-marked warblers exhibited significant isolation among populations during migration and the nonbreeding period. During the nonbreeding period, Golden-winged Warblers from Minnesota, USA (n = 12) occurred in Central America from southern Mexico to central Nicaragua; warblers from Tennessee, USA (n = 7) occurred along the border of northern Colombia and Venezuela; and warblers from Pennsylvania, USA (n = 2) occurred in north-central Venezuela. Warblers travelled at slower rates over more days in fall migration than spring migration. Fall migration routes at the Gulf of Mexico were population-specific, whereas spring routes were more varied and overlapped among populations. Golden-winged Warblers from Pennsylvania migrated 4,000 and 5,000 km yr−1 farther than Tennessee and Minnesota warblers, respectively, and spent almost twice as long migrating in the fall compared to Minnesota warblers. Our results reveal nearly complete temporal and geographic isolation among 3 populations of Golden-winged Warblers throughout the annual cycle, resulting in opportunities for population- and site-specific factors to differentially influence populations outside the breeding period. These systems require the best available weather inputs, as well as a long-term historical record to contextualize current observations. This article introduces the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS), a custom instance of the NASA Land Information System (LIS) framework. The FLDAS is routinely used to produce multi-model and multi-forcing estimates of hydro-climate states and fluxes over semi-arid, food insecure regions of Africa. These modeled data and derived products, like soil moisture percentiles and water availability, were designed and are currently used to complement FEWS NET’s operational remotely sensed rainfall, evapotranspiration, and vegetation observations. The 30+ years of monthly outputs from the FLDAS simulations are publicly available from the NASA Goddard Earth Science Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) and recommended for use in hydroclimate studies, early warning applications, and by agro-meteorological scientists in Eastern, Southern, and Western Africa.
","language":"English","publisher":"Nature","doi":"10.1038/sdata.2017.12","usgsCitation":"McNally, A., Arsenault, K., Kumar, S., Shukla, S., Peterson, P., Wang, S., Funk, C., Peters-Lidard, C., and Verdin, J., 2017, A land data assimilation system for sub-Saharan Africa food and water security applications: Scientific Data, v. 4, p. 1-19, https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2017.12.","productDescription":"Article number 170012; 19 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"19","ipdsId":"IP-077287","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470090,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1038/sdata.2017.12","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":347730,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-14","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59f83a39e4b063d5d30980f3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McNally, Amy","contributorId":145810,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McNally","given":"Amy","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":16236,"text":"UCSB Climate Hazards Group","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":717321,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Arsenault, Kristi","contributorId":198836,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Arsenault","given":"Kristi","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":717322,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kumar, Sujay","contributorId":198837,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kumar","given":"Sujay","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":717323,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Shukla, Shraddhanand","contributorId":145841,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Shukla","given":"Shraddhanand","affiliations":[{"id":16255,"text":"Climate Hazards Group University of California Santa Barbara","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":717324,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Peterson, Pete","contributorId":192379,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Peterson","given":"Pete","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":717325,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Wang, Shugong","contributorId":198838,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wang","given":"Shugong","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":717326,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Funk, Chris 0000-0002-9254-6718 cfunk@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9254-6718","contributorId":167070,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Funk","given":"Chris","email":"cfunk@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":717320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7},{"text":"Peters-Lidard, Christa","contributorId":198839,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Peters-Lidard","given":"Christa","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":717327,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":8},{"text":"Verdin, James 0000-0003-0238-9657 verdin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0238-9657","contributorId":145830,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Verdin","given":"James","email":"verdin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":717328,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":9}]}}

Multiple crop cover maps have been developed to suite particular research interests. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Cropland Data Layers (CDL) are a series of commonly used crop cover maps for the conterminous United States (CONUS) that span from 2008 to 2013. In this investigation, we sought to contribute to the availability of consistent CONUS crop cover maps by extending temporal coverage of the NASS CDL archive back eight additional years to 2000 by creating annual NASS CDL-like crop cover maps derived from a classification tree model algorithm. We used over 11 million records to train a classification tree algorithm and develop a crop classification model (CCM). The model was used to create crop cover maps for the CONUS for years 2000–2013 at 250 m spatial resolution. The CCM and the maps for years 2008–2013 were assessed for accuracy relative to resampled NASS CDLs. The CCM performed well against a withheld test data set with a model prediction accuracy of over 90%. The assessment of the crop cover maps indicated that the model performed well spatially, placing crop cover pixels within their known domains; however, the model did show a bias towards the ‘Other’ crop cover class, which caused frequent misclassifications of pixels around the periphery of large crop cover patch clusters and of pixels that form small, sparsely dispersed crop cover patches.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/2150704X.2016.1271469","usgsCitation":"Friesz, A.M., Wylie, B., and Howard, D.M., 2017, Temporal expansion of annual crop classification layers for the CONUS using the C5 decision tree classifier: Remote Sensing Letters, v. 8, no. 4, p. 389-398, https://doi.org/10.1080/2150704X.2016.1271469.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"389","endPage":"398","ipdsId":"IP-075490","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":347729,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-01-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59f83a38e4b063d5d30980ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Friesz, Aaron M. 0000-0003-4096-3824 afriesz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4096-3824","contributorId":5943,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friesz","given":"Aaron","email":"afriesz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":717392,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wylie, Bruce K. 0000-0002-7374-1083 wylie@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7374-1083","contributorId":197161,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wylie","given":"Bruce K.","email":"wylie@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":717394,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Howard, Daniel M. 0000-0002-7563-7538 danny.howard.ctr@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7563-7538","contributorId":197063,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howard","given":"Daniel","email":"danny.howard.ctr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":223,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":717393,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

One potential cause of this decline includes impacts resulting from co-occurrence with non-native red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Although a growing body of anecdotal and observational evidence from laboratory experiments supports this hypothesis, there remains a lack of field scale manipulations testing the effect of fire ants on reptile and amphibian communities. We addressed this gap by measuring reptile and amphibian (“herpetofauna”) community response to successful fire ant reductions over the course of 2 years following hydramethylnon application to five 100–200 ha plots in southeastern coastal South Carolina. By assessing changes in relative abundance and species richness of herpetofauna in response to fire ant reductions, we were able to assess whether some species were particularly vulnerable to fire ant presence, and whether this sensitivity manifested at the community level. We found that herpetofauna abundance and species richness responded positively to fire ant reductions. Our results document that even moderate populations of red imported fire ants decrease both the abundance and diversity of herpetofauna. Given global herpetofauna population declines and continued spread of fire ants, there is urgency to understand the impacts of fire ants beyond anecdotal and singles species studies. The federally endangered Diamond Darter Crystallaria cincotta is in need of an effective monitoring design to improve our understanding of its distribution and track population trends. Because of their small size, cryptic coloration, and nocturnal behavior, along with limitations associated with current sampling methods, individuals are difficult to detect at known occupied sites. Therefore, research is needed to determine if survey efforts can be improved by increasing probability of individual detection. The primary objective of this study was to determine if there are seasonal and diel patterns in Diamond Darter detectability during population surveys. In addition to temporal factors, we also assessed five habitat variables that might influence individual detection. We used N-mixture models to estimate site abundances and relationships between covariates and individual detectability and ranked models using Akaike's information criteria. During 2015 three known occupied sites were sampled 15 times each between May and Oct. The best supported model included water temperature as a quadratic function influencing individual detectability, with temperatures around 22 C resulting in the highest detection probability. Detection probability when surveying at the optimal temperature was approximately 6% and 7.5% greater than when surveying at 16 C and 29 C, respectively. Time of Night and day of year were not strong predictors of Diamond Darter detectability. The results of this study will allow researchers and agencies to maximize detection probability when surveying populations, resulting in greater monitoring efficiency and likely more precise abundance estimates.
","language":"English","doi":"10.1674/0003-0031-178.1.123","usgsCitation":"Rizzo, A.A., Brown, D., Welsh, S., and Thompson, P., 2017, Factors influencing detection of the federally endangered Diamond Darter Crystallaria cincotta: Implications for long-term monitoring strategies: The American Midland Naturalist, v. 178, no. 1, p. 123-131, https://doi.org/10.1674/0003-0031-178.1.123.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"123","endPage":"131","ipdsId":"IP-079169","costCenters":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":348594,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"178","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a06c8d1e4b09af898c86146","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rizzo, Austin A.","contributorId":191439,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Rizzo","given":"Austin","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":12432,"text":"West Virginia University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721636,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brown, Donald J.","contributorId":191568,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Brown","given":"Donald J.","affiliations":[{"id":12432,"text":"West Virginia University","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721637,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Welsh, Stuart A. 0000-0003-0362-054X swelsh@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0362-054X","contributorId":152088,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Welsh","given":"Stuart A.","email":"swelsh@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":199,"text":"Coop Res Unit Leetown","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":721638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Thompson, Patricia A. pathompson@usgs.gov","contributorId":5249,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"Patricia A.","email":"pathompson@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":721639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

A surge of interest in this area was catalyzed by the observation that evolution by natural selection can operate at the same contemporary timescales as ecological dynamics. Specifically, recent eco-evolutionary research focuses on how rapid adaptation influences ecology, and vice versa. Evolution by non-adaptive forces also occurs quickly, with ecological consequences, but understanding the full scope of ecology–evolution (eco–evo) interactions requires explicitly addressing population-level processes – genetic and demographic. We show the strong ecological effects of non-adaptive evolutionary forces and, more broadly, the value of population-level research for gaining a mechanistic understanding of eco–evo interactions. The breadth of eco-evolutionary research should expand to incorporate the breadth of evolution itself.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.tree.2016.12.002","usgsCitation":"Lowe, W.H., Kovach, R., and Allendorf, F.W., 2017, Population genetics and demography unite ecology and evolution: Trends in Ecology and Evolution, v. 32, no. 2, p. 141-152, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tree.2016.12.002.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"141","endPage":"152","ipdsId":"IP-077980","costCenters":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":470104,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tree.2016.12.002","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":347385,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59f1a2a6e4b0220bbd9d9f61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lowe, Winsor H.","contributorId":126722,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lowe","given":"Winsor","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":6577,"text":"University of Montana, Division of Biological Sciences, Missoula, MT, 59812, USA.","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":715705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kovach, Ryan 0000-0001-5402-2123 rkovach@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5402-2123","contributorId":145914,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kovach","given":"Ryan","email":"rkovach@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":715704,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Allendorf, Fred W.","contributorId":124525,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Allendorf","given":"Fred","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":5084,"text":"Division of Biological Sciences, University of Montana, Missoula, MT","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":715706,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The method developed allows for quantification of the performance of groundwater models built from different geological realizations of structure. Multiple structural realizations are generated using geostatistical Monte Carlo simulations that treat sparse borehole lithological observations as hard data and dense geophysically derived structural probabilities as soft data. Each structural model is used to define 3-D hydrostratigraphical zones of a groundwater model, and the hydraulic parameter values of the zones are estimated by using nonlinear regression to fit hydrological data (hydraulic head and river discharge measurements). Use of the methodology is demonstrated for a synthetic domain having structures of categorical deposits consisting of sand, silt, or clay. It is shown that using dense AEM data with the methodology can significantly improve the estimated accuracy of the sediment distribution as compared to when borehole data are used alone. It is also shown that this use of AEM data can improve the predictive capability of a calibrated groundwater model that uses the geological structures as zones. However, such structural models will always contain errors because even with dense AEM data it is not possible to perfectly resolve the structures of a groundwater system. It is shown that when using such erroneous structures in a groundwater model, they can lead to biased parameter estimates and biased model predictions, therefore impairing the model's predictive capability.
","language":"English","publisher":"AGU","doi":"10.1002/2016WR019141","usgsCitation":"Christensen, N.K., Minsley, B.J., and Christensen, S., 2017, Generation of 3-D hydrostratigraphic zones from dense airborne electromagnetic data to assess groundwater model prediction error: Water Resources Research, v. 53, no. 2, p. 1019-1038, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016WR019141.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"1019","endPage":"1038","ipdsId":"IP-081403","costCenters":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":488731,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://pure.au.dk/portal/en/publications/dcdb9b5e-bf3c-4826-83aa-0fb5cd606845","text":"External Repository"},{"id":348146,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"53","issue":"2","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":2,"text":"Denver PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"59fc2ea5e4b0531197b27f85","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Christensen, Nikolaj K","contributorId":199736,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Christensen","given":"Nikolaj","email":"","middleInitial":"K","affiliations":[{"id":13419,"text":"Aarhus University, Denmark","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":719889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Minsley, Burke J. 0000-0003-1689-1306 bminsley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1689-1306","contributorId":697,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Minsley","given":"Burke","email":"bminsley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":719888,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Christensen, Steen","contributorId":199737,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Christensen","given":"Steen","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":13419,"text":"Aarhus University, Denmark","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":719890,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

In 2014, the Chief Joseph Hatchery released 44,267 yearling and 186,050 subyearling integrated Chinook from the Omak acclimation pond, and 265,656 subyearling segregated Chinook from the hatchery. Full production potential was not met at the hatchery for brood year 2014 because of higher than anticipated pre-spawn mortality in the broodstock. The total Chinook spawn in 2014 included, 132 hatcheryorigin Spring Chinook (66 male, 66 female)(21% of full program), 498 natural-origin summer/fall Chinook (250 male, 248 female)(83% of full program), and 453 hatcheryorigin Summer/Fall Chinook (223 male, 230 female)(92%). Two hundred thousand Spring Chinook parr were received in late October at the Riverside Acclimation Pond from the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery (100% of full production). These fish will be released in the spring of 2015 and mark the beginning of implementation of the non-essential experimental population under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act.

Monitoring and evaluation consist primarily of operating rotary screw traps on the Okanogan River to monitor juvenile production and outmigration, beach seining and PIT tagging operations at the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia Rivers, the operation of an adult pilot weir on the Okanogan River, and redd and carcass surveys on the Okanogan and Similkameen rivers. In 2014, the rotary screw traps captured 22,073 natural-origin Chinook, and estimated total juvenile outmigration was 3,265,309 (95% C. I. = 1,809,367- 4,721,251). Via the beach seine, 9,133 juvenile Chinook were captured, and 8,226 were released with an implanted PIT tag. 2,324 adult Chinook were encountered in the weir trap, of which 318 were hatchery-origin and 2,006 were natural-origin. All natural-origin fish were released upstream of the weir unharmed, except for 76 which were taken for broodstock. All but four of the hatchery-origin fish encountered in the trap were removed for pHOS management. Redd surveys detected 4,253 Summer/Fall Chinook redds, which led to a spawner escapement estimate of 12,164 Chinook. 2,452 carcasses were recovered (2,123 natural-origin and 329 hatchery-origin), and the proportion of hatchery-origin spawners was 0.12.
","language":"English","publisher":"Colville Tribes Fish & Wildlife Department","usgsCitation":"Pearl, A., Laramie, M., Baldwin, C., Rohrback, J., and Phillips, P., 2017, The Chief Joseph Hatchery Program 2014 Annual Report, 188 p.","productDescription":"188 p.","ipdsId":"IP-081764","costCenters":[{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":339839,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":339838,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.cct-fnw.com/reports/"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Chief Joseph Hatchery, Okanogan River Basin, Winthrop National Fish Hatchery","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.1409912109375,\n              48.0156497866894\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.817138671875,\n              48.0156497866894\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.817138671875,\n              48.99824008113872\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1409912109375,\n              48.99824008113872\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.1409912109375,\n              48.0156497866894\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58f725e5e4b0b7ea5451eec2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pearl, Andrea","contributorId":178154,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pearl","given":"Andrea","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658051,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laramie, Matthew 0000-0001-7820-2583 mlaramie@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7820-2583","contributorId":152532,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laramie","given":"Matthew","email":"mlaramie@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":290,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":658050,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Baldwin, Casey","contributorId":178155,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Baldwin","given":"Casey","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658052,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rohrback, John","contributorId":178156,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Rohrback","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658053,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Phillips, Pat","contributorId":178157,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Phillips","given":"Pat","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658054,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The hydraulic model was calibrated using the current stage-discharge rating at the USGS streamgage 04101000, St. Joseph River at Elkhart, Ind., and the documented high-water marks from the flood of March 1982. The hydraulic model was then used to compute six water-surface profiles for flood stages at 1-foot (ft) intervals referenced to the streamgage datum ranging from 23.0 ft (the NWS “action stage”) to 28.0 ft, which is the highest stage interval of the current USGS stage-discharge rating curve and 1 ft higher than the NWS “major flood stage.” The simulated water-surface profiles were then combined with a Geographic Information System digital elevation model (derived from light detection and ranging [lidar] data having a 0.49-ft root mean squared error and 4.9-ft horizontal resolution, resampled to a 10-ft grid) to delineate the area flooded at each stage.

The availability of these maps, along with Internet information regarding current stage from the USGS streamgage and forecasted high-flow stages from the NWS, will provide emergency management personnel and residents with information that is critical for flood response activities such as evacuations and road closures, as well as for post-flood recovery efforts.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/sir20165179","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs","usgsCitation":"Martin, Z.W., 2017, Flood-inundation maps for the St. Joseph River at Elkhart, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2016–5179, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20165179.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 10 p.; Data Release","numberOfPages":"20","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"Y","ipdsId":"IP-079008","costCenters":[{"id":27231,"text":"Indiana-Kentucky Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333769,"rank":3,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/F7QZ2836","text":"USGS Data Release","description":"USGS Data Release","linkHelpText":"St. Joseph River at Elkhart, Indiana, Flood-Inundation HEC-RAS Model"},{"id":333734,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2016/5179/coverthb.jpg"},{"id":333735,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2016/5179/sir20165179.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.35 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"SIR 2016–5179"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","otherGeospatial":"St. Joseph River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -86.04475021362305,\n              41.67355293097283\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.04475021362305,\n              41.69380876113261\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.97402572631836,\n              41.69380876113261\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.97402572631836,\n              41.67355293097283\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.04475021362305,\n              41.67355293097283\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Indiana Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
5957 Lakeside Boulevard,
Indianapolis, IN 46278–1996

https://in.water.usgs.gov

","tableOfContents":"

Acknowledgments

Abstract

Introduction

Creation of Flood-Inundation Map Library

Summary

References Cited

","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"publishedDate":"2017-02-01","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2017-02-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58945331e4b0fa1e59b867e9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, Zachary W. 0000-0001-5779-3548 zmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5779-3548","contributorId":156296,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Zachary","email":"zmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":656493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In this model, the high‐frequency energy is not produced in the same location as the peak coseismic slip, but is generated in the deeper part of the rupture zone. Using synthetic seismograms generated for a plane‐layered velocity model, I find that the high stress‐drop subevents explain the observed Fourier spectral amplitude from about 0.1 to 1.0 Hz. Broadband synthetics (0–10 Hz) were calculated by combining deterministic synthetics derived from the background slip and asperities (≤1  Hz) with stochastic synthetics generated only at the asperities (≥1  Hz). The broadband synthetics produced response spectral accelerations with low bias compared to the data, for periods of 0.1–10 s. A subevent stress drop of 200–350 bars for the high‐frequency stochastic synthetics was found to bracket the observed spectral accelerations at frequencies greater than 1 Hz. For most of the stations, the synthetics had durations of the Arias intensity similar to the observed records.
","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/0120160127","usgsCitation":"Frankel, A.D., 2017, Modeling strong‐motion recordings of the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule, Chile, earthquake with high stress‐drop subevents and background slip: Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, v. 107, no. 1, p. 372-386, https://doi.org/10.1785/0120160127.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"372","endPage":"386","ipdsId":"IP-074295","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":342191,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Chile","city":"Maule","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74,\n              -33\n            ],\n            [\n              -70,\n              -33\n            ],\n            [\n              -70,\n              -39\n            ],\n            [\n              -74,\n              -39\n            ],\n            [\n              -74,\n              -33\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"107","issue":"1","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2016-11-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5937bf2ee4b0f6c2d0d9c760","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frankel, Arthur D. 0000-0001-9119-6106 afrankel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9119-6106","contributorId":146285,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frankel","given":"Arthur","email":"afrankel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":697332,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
