Water-resources development has been slight compared with that in many areas in Arizona. In 1978 about 500 acre-feet of water was diverted for irrigation from the San Francisco and Blue Rivers, and about 550 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn from wells for municipal use at Clifton. Surface water and ground water generally contained less than 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids; however, in the San Francisco River the dissolved-solids concentration increased from 263 to 885 milligrams per liter as the water moved downstream. The increase in dissolved solids was caused by inflow from springs near Clifton, one of which contained 11,700 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids. The purpose of this report is to alert others as to the nature of the strong-motion data that is available from this event. In order to provide the information in a timely manner, the report has been limited to a summary of the data. A similar preliminary report of strong-motion data collected by the Office of Strong-Motion Studies of the California Division of Mines and Geology has already been issued. A more complete report of all of the strong ground motion data is contemplated. This will require the cooperation of all of the agencies in both the U.S. and Mexico that operate strong-motion instruments in the region. A report on the processing of the data from near-in stations is in preparation. The moderate-size (magnitude 6.4) October 15, 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake was instrumentally located on the Imperial fault approximately 25 km southeast of El Centro, California. The inside diameter of the C. A. B. liner was 89 mm (3.5 inches}. Upon retrieval, the cores were cut in 1.5 m sections, examined for evidence of disturbance, then, if in acceptable condition, were sealed and placed in their in situ vertical position in a refrigerated van. Once ashore, the sections were opened, sealed with wax, recapped and stored as before.</p><p>The cores were split lengthwise for analysis. One half of the core was X-rayed and the radiograph was carefully examined as a further check for disturbance. This half was then archived. Potentiometric levels declined 4 to 21 feet between September 1978 and May 1979, in the citrus and farming sections of southern Hillsborough, northern Hardee, southwestern Polk, northwestern DeSoto, and Manatee Counties. Water levels in these areas are widely affected by pumping for irrigation and have the greatest range in fluctuations. Water-level declines ranged from 0 to 6 feet in coastal, northern, and southern areas of the Water Management District. Generally potentiometric levels were higher than previous May levels due to heavy rains in April and May. Recently, however, several coal beds in the Powder River Basin, as well as coal beds in several other coal basins of the Rocky Mountain region, have been found to contain thin but persist&middot;ent layers. of altered volcanic ash described as kaolinitic bentonites (Bohor, 1976, 1977, 1978, Bohor and others, 1976, 1978, Bohor and Pillmore, 1976). These layers serve as isochronous marker horizons which aid in correlating coal beds over broad areas.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Millions of acre-feet of water is pumped from the system annually to support a large and expanding agribusiness industry. Since the 1950's, water levels have been steadily declining in many areas of the valley and concern has been expressed about the ability of the entire ground-water system to support agribusiness at current levels, not to mention its ability to function at projected expansion levels. At current levels of ground-water use, an estimated 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet is withdrawn from storage each year; that is, 1.5 to 2 million acre-feet of water is pumped annually in excess of annual replenishment. The U.S. Geological Survey has initiated a 4-year study to develop geologic, hydrologic, and hydraulic information and to establish a valleywide ground-water data base that will be used to build computer models of the ground-water flow system. Subsequently, these models may be used to evaluate the system response to various ground-water management alternatives. This report describes current problems, objectives of the study, and outlines the general work to be accomplished in the study area. A bibliography of about 600 references is included. In this investigation seawater was detected in the Guayanilla-Yauco and Tallaboa areas.</p><p>Since 1968, water level and quality-of-water data have been collected from selected wells in the south coastal areas between Guanica and Patillas. The 1968-77 study indicated two additional areas of possible seawater intrusion in the Ponce-Santa Isabel area.
