The purpose of the presentation was to summarize some important geological concepts to a largely nongeological audience involved in the in situ extraction of uranium from buried uranium ore deposits. The major geological feature affecting the leaching of sandstone-type deposits is permeability. Important permeability variations may be caused by sedimentary structures, texture, structure, composition, and lithology. The effects of these features on leaching uranium are discussed. The need for a rapid method for calculating terrain corrections for borehole gravity surveys arose with the development of a high-precision borehole gravity meter (Howell et al., 1966; McCulloh et al., 1967). Hearst (1968) was the first to publish a reasonable scheme for rapid computation of terrain corrections to both tower and borehole gravity surveys. Beyer (1971) applied terrain corrections to both tower and borehole gravity measurements using a computational procedure that increased the versatility of Hearst's method. The arsenic contamination has not been correlated with placer or other mining activity. The high levels of nitrate do not generally appear related to septic waste contamination. Few wells in the Fairbanks area yield water with low concentrations of iron or low hardness. Iron concentrations are consistently greater than 3 mg/L on the flood plain. In the uplands, concentrations of both iron and hardness are lowest near the ridgetops and increase downslope. The report includes a map of the area showing the location of sampled wells and a table of chemical analysis. The thunderstorms can cause floods of large magnitude, but of localized extent. Most streams of the lowlands are ephemeral or intermittent. \r\n\r\nStreams of the high mountain areas are much less variable. Most of their flow is from snowmelt, which results in low-intensity flood peaks with long, gradual recessions. Most large mountain streams are perennial. \r\n\r\nSmall ephemeral lakes and ponds in the low-lying areas have little effect on flood flows. Larger reservoirs in the basin have varying effects on flows of rivers, ranging from complete flow control to minor regulation. \r\n\r\nThe streams of the low-lying areas are high in dissolved solids content. Sodium, bicarbonate, and sulfate are the predominant ions. The quality of the water varies during a single-flow event and season-ally. Eighty-three stream sites were selected for sampling in Eagle, Grand, Jackson, Pitkin, Routt, and Summit Counties. Also included are data from 28 sites in Routt County collected for a U.S. Geological Survey cooperative study on the Yampa River basin. A summary of data collected prior to this study, results of current chemical and biological sampling, and needs for future water-quality monitoring are reported for each county.</p><p>The kinds of data collected were site specific depending upon land-use activities. Data collected at selected sites included temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, and stream discharge. Chemical data collected included nutrients, inorganics, organics, and trace elements. Biological data collected included counts and species composition of total and fecal-coliform bacteria, fecal-streptococcus bacteria, benthic invertebrates, and phytoplankton. Most of the sites were sampled three times: in April-June 1976, August 1976, and January 1977.</p><p>The major water-quality problems at the 17 sites sampled in Eagle County are related to mining, recreation, and geology. The Eagle River and Cross Creek in the vicinity of Minturn have concentrations of trace elements that exceed water-quality standards. Gore Creek is influenced by winter recreational use and the water during the winter has total bacteria counts as great as 72,000 per 100 milliliters and concentrations of un-ionized ammonia greater than 0.02 milligrams per liter downstream from the sewage-treatment plant. Mineralized water in the downstream reaches of the Eagle River results from natural chemical processes. The water-quality problems in Grand County, especially on the Fraser River, are related to recreation and urban activities. The emphasis is on papers that illustrate these cysts, and our annotation concentrates on the nature of the illustrations. In some cases, we have also listed taxonomic names of the species illustrated in the paper, as well as those of any new species described, but this part of the annotation is not yet complete. The taxonomic names given here are always those given by the original author. The references have been selected by starting with a few papers and extracting relevant titles from their reference lists. We have included not only relevant works, but also a few that sounded relevant but turned out not to be.</p><p>This bibliography is, we believe, fairly complete for references that describe fossil occurrences of cysts, but much less thorough for the taxonomic literature. The list of references is still evolving, and we welcome additions or corrections.</p><p>We have checked and verified many of the references listed here; those that we have not yet seen are indicated by an asterisk preceding the authorship. We have also indicated the source of each reference which we have not seen. Most such references were found in the reference lists of other papers listed here. Other references have been taken from the VanLandingham bibliography, which is an unpublished manuscript on file at the Diatom Library of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.</p><p>We wish to thank Mrs. Margaret Hanna, curator of the Diatom Library at the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) and Mrs. Jacquelyn Freeberg, of the USGS Menlo Park Library, for help in locating many of the references, which are often tantalizingly obscure.</p><p>Some of the references are incomplete; they have been included anyway in order to preserve as much information as possible. Two types of channel deposits are recognized from their sedimentary structures: meandering and distributary. The flood plain was occasionally transgressed by a shallow sea from the west, resulting in the deposition of several thin limestones and marine sandstones. The marine sandstones were deposited as longshore bars. Wind transported sand along the shoreline of the shallow sea, forming a coastal dune field. Marine sandstones and eolian sandstones are more common in the upper Cutler in the southern part of the area, whereas in the central and northern part of the area the formation is predominantly fluvial. Crossbed orientation indicates that Cutler streams flowed S. 67? W. on the the average, whereas marine currents moved sediment S. 36? E. and N. 24? W., and wind transported sand S. 800 E. \r\n\r\nThe uranium in the Cutler is found in the central and northern part of the area, in the upper part of the formation, in small fluvial sandstone bodies that were deposited predominantly in a distributary environment. No uranium is known in the marine or eolian sandstones. Petrographically, the uranium-bearing sandstones are identical to other Cutler fluvial sandstones except that they contain less calcite and more clay and are slightly coarser grained. The region of interest lies between 35° and 41° N and 70.5° and 76° W. The north-south dimension is about 660 km (356 nautical miles, 410 statute miles) and the maximum east-west dimension is approximately 250 km (135 nautical miles, 155 statute miles). The area is centered toward the outer Continental Shelf off Delaware and contains more than 154,000 km2 (38,000,000 acres) off the coasts of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and New York.
