A. Dickinson and John Mitchell. Samples containing as much as 1300 ± 400 ppm uranium, measured by beta eU, were found. These samples have the highest uranium contents so far reported from Tertiary sedimentary rocks in southeast Alaska. Eakins (1975) reported two samples containing 12 and 13 ppm uranium and an anomaly of 13 times background from the same area. (Hansen, 1966; Weigle, 1972; Zohdy and others, 1974, p.56) North of Salisbury a deep Pleistocene paleochannel was discovered; this channel was carved into an erosional plain at the top of the Miocene deposit, was filled and blanketed subsequently with deposits (mostly sand and gravel) of Pleistocene age. The channel is a prolific source of ground water, and has been outlined for a least 15 kilometers by means of power-augering and gamma-logging.</p><p>A geophysical survey using ground magnetics and VLF-EM was made over the channel in an attempt to see if a more efficient method than augering could be developed to map the paleochannel at depth; the survey traverse was made over one of the better defined parts of the paleochannel (see figure 1.) where airborne magnetics and VLF studies could easily be done as a potential follow-up. We hoped to be able to map resistivity changes between aquifer and aquiclude facies with the VLF-EM, and perhaps identify other facies changes in black-sand concentrations with ground magnetics. The data is presented in Table 1 and plotted in figure 2. A new international program is being formulated to promote cooperative development of the concepts required to solve proliferating problems created by intensifying human use and misuse of the land and its resources. A tentative title suggested by the U.S. Geodynamics Committee for this program for the decade of the 1980's is \"Crustal Dynamics: A Framework for Resources.\" The needs are pressing at both the national and international levels. Many reasons cited for undertaking this international program are akin to the justifications for forming, maintaining, or enlarging governmental geological surveys. Thus, the U.S. Geological Survey has an obligation to participate in the Crustal Dynamics Program to meet its expanding responsibilities to serve the nation effectively.</p><p>A U.S. Geological Survey workshop was convened near Denver on September 20-23, 1978, to consider appropriate roles that might be played in the Crustal Dynamics decade. Some 60 Survey geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, and hydrologists participated. Principal questions addressed were: 1) What are the major earth-science problems that should be investigated during the next decade? 2) What are their implications to society? 3) What competence can be brought to bear on these problems and what further competence and tools need to be developed? 4) What roles are appropriate for the USGS within the broader national and international earth-science communities?</p><p>This report presents some responses to these questions. Readers may recognize some defects. The report was prepared by several committees and its sections remain uneven despite editing. Insufficient time was available for either lengthy consideration or discussions, and no opportunity was provided for communication with colleagues in other organizations. First, recovery of material from depth will permit determination of the composition and constitutive properties of both solid and fluid phases. Second, it will enable measurements of the physical state of the fault zone to be made (that is, the state of in-situ stress, pore pressure, and temperature). Finally, it will allow emplacement of instruments at depth in the fault zone as part of experiments related to earthquake prediction.</p><p>This report briefly describes the drilling history and preliminary analysis of fault zone materials from site Dry Lake Valley (DLV) No. 1 (Fig. 1). The site is located at Lat. 36028.09'N, Long. 12103.32'W. This site was chosen in an attempt to drill a 1 km deep well that would reach earthquake foci. Although the entire central section of the San Andreas fault is characterized by moderate seismicity and aseismic creep, Dry Lake Valley has particularly shallow earthquakes as well as a fairly high creep rate (18-20 mm/year, S. Schultz, pers. comm.). Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section along the San Andreas fault showing high precision locations of magnitude one or greater earthquakes that occurred in 1973-1975 (from W. Ellsworth, per. comm.). The depth accuracy of the earthquakes shown is about <span>±</span> 0.5 km, and it is obvious from Figure 2 that Dry Lake Valley earthquakes are extremely shallow.</p><p>As shown in Figure 1 the general geology of the central section of the San Andreas fault consists of Tertiary to Jurassic sedimentary and volcanic rocks overlying Cretaceous age Gabilan granite of the Salinian Block on the west side of the fault and Cretaceous-Jurassic sedimentary assemblages of the Franciscan Complex to the east of the fault. Dibblee (1979) summarizes the geology along the central San Andreas fault. At the Dry Lake Valley site as much as 2 km of Pliocene-Miocene marine sediments (Etchegoin and Santa Margarita formation) overlie Franciscan rocks on the northeast side of the San Andreas fault. This report complements the previous reports by providing new petrographic and geochemical data for samples from St. Paul and St. George Islands and from two dredge hauls near St. George Island (Fig. 1).</p><p>The geologic setting of the Pribilof Islands region is given by Barth (1956), Hopkins and Einarsson (1965), Cox and others (1966), Hopkins and others (1969), Marlow and others (1976), and Hopkins and Silberman (1978). Quaternary basalt (Table 1) (Cox and others, 1966; Hopkins, 1976; Simpson and others, 1979) is extruded onto the structurally high Pribilof Ridge (Marlow and others, 1976) which consists of rocks as old as late Jurassic (Vallier and others, 1979). Barth (1956) recognized the structural implication of alkalic volcanism in back-arc environments. We plan to interpret alkalic volcanism in the Pribilof Islands within the context of recent tectonic and petrologic findings in the southern Bering Sea.</p><p>Funds for this project were provided jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and Bureau of Land Management.
