The under-ice surface would serve as a trap for pollutants such as oil and gas released from the sea bed. A knowledge of the morphology of the undersurface of the ice is a first step in understanding the sea-bed interactions and in evaluating the quantities, configuration, and dispersal patterns of sub-ice pollutants. Investigations show thicker sea-ice correlates with a thin snow cover and thin sea-ice underlies elongate snow ridges.</p><p>In early May, 1978, the relationships between under-ice morphology, sea bed morphology, tidal currents, and variations in snow thickness were studied. At three sites representing three different environments--protected bay, deep, open lagoon, and narrow tidal channel--trenches were cut through the ice. The trenches were parallel and perpendicular to the sastrugi-sculptured northeast-southwest trending snow ridge pattern. Snow depth, ice thickness, and ice drafts were measured and an upward-directed side-scanning sonar was towed to examine the morphology of the under-ice surface in an area 100 m square.</p><p>Snow depth and ice thickness vary about 30-40 cm and exhibit a negative correlation--thin ice coinciding with a thicker insulating snow cover. The areal snow and ice morphology patterns reinforced the correlation. Elongate ridge and trough patterns on the under-ice surface parallel the surface snow ridge patterns on wavelengths typically 10 m wide, yielding sub-ice voids of 25 to 47 x 10<sup>3</sup>m<sup>3</sup>/km<sup>2</sup> (600-1200 barrels per acre). Diving observations indicate a smaller set of depressions 5 cm or less in depth, oriented parallel to the ice crystal fabric, and an escape of sub-ice released air to the snow-ice interface.</p><p>The results imply that there is a seasonal stability to the snow ridge pattern and that oil concentrations under the ice would be indicated by surficial snow morphology in the fast ice zone. Spreading directions would be enhanced in the elongate dimensions of the under-ice ridges and troughs, that is, upwind and downwind. Maps were prepared showing average precipitation, average streamflow, stream temperature, ground- and surface-water quality, sediment yield, and geology. Recommendations were made for additional study and suggested approaches for continued monitoring in the coal areas.<br></p><p>During the 1931-75 water years, the minimum discharges for the five major streams that head in the area ranged from about 12,000 to 26,000 acre-feet per year, and the maximum discharges ranged from about 59,000 to 315,000 acre-feet per year. Correlations indicate that 3 years of low-flow records at stream sites in the Wasatch Plateau would allow the development of relationships with long-term sites that can be used to estimate future low-flow records within a standard error of about 20 percent.<br></p><p>Most water-quality degradation in streams occurs along the flanks of the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs. In the uplands, dissolved-solids concentrations generally ranged from less than 100 to about 250 milligrams per liter, and in the lowlands the concentrations ranged from about 250 to more than 6,000 milligrams per liter.<br></p><p>In the lowland areas, the Ferron Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale appears to have the most potential for subsurface development of water of suitable chemical quality for human consumption. Three wells in the Ferron yielded water with dissolved-solids concentrations ranging from about 650 to 1,230 milligrams per liter.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The bedload-transport rate is approximately 1 to 2 prcent of the suspended-sediment transport rate. Data collected at Fairbanks and upstream from Fairbanks near North Pole, Alaska, show little difference in size distribution of suspended sediment between the two locations. The median particle size distribution of suspended sediment is generally in the silt range, but at some low-water discharges, the median particle size is in the very fine sand range. The median particle size is in the very fine sand range. The median particle size of bedload near Noth Pole is generally in the gravel range, but at some low transport rates, the median particle size is in the medium sand range. At Fairbanks, data collected in 1977 indicate median particle sizes of bedload comparable to those of the upstream location, whereas data collected in 1978 indicate a marked decrease in median particle size of bedload between the two locations. Part of the concern is related to the possible impacts that mining and processing of lignite will have on water resources. Not only will the disturbance caused by excavating affect the quantity and quality of surface and ground water but, the mining, processing, and conversion processes will require the use and consumption of significant quantities of water.</p><p>In order to assess the magnitude of the effects of strip mining upon both surface and ground water, baseline conditions (hydrologic conditions in the area prior to mining) must be well defined. A thorough data file and literature search was made so that baseline conditions in the area could be defined. In addition, data-collection networks have been established for the collection of quantitative and qualitative information on streamflow and water levels in the aquifers. Data collected to date at these sites are included in the report. Collection of data at these sites will continue through at least September 1979.<br></p><p>Information presented in this report can be used to estimate the quantities of water available for use and Ages of sized and magnetic fractions of zircon concentrates show variable degrees of discordance, which seem to result from a very young disturbance that produces linear arrays in the Concordia plot. Model age calculations based on a statistically and geologically reasonable lower intercept produce very consistent internal relationships. The Pan African Orogeny, considered to be responsible for loss of radiogenic argon and strontium from minerals of many rocks, does not appear to have affected the zircon data, even though uplift had exposed the rocks of the Arabian Shield at that time.</p><p>Tonalite, granodiorite, and crosscutting leuco-adamellite bodies in the southern part of the An Nimas batholith yield ages in the time range 820-760 m.y. A narrow time range of 660 to 665 million years was indicated for ages of widely separated and compositionally different intrusive bodies all to the east of the An Nimas batholith. Most samples were taken within the Telluride, Colo., city limits during October 1978. Twenty-four of the 38 groundwater samples (63%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. Excluding the mill tailings pond 6 of the 23 surface-water samples (26%) contained more than 50 micrograms per liter of hexavalent chromium. This energy reverberates between the surface of the water and the seafloor (or other strong reflectors), and makes portions of the seismic data completely useless. Several different data-processing techniques can be applied to partially suppress these multiples and enhance the interpretability of the data. These techniques include (1) the three-point operator, (2) predictive deconvolution, (3) near-trace muting, (4) spatially variant bandpass filters, (5) Nth root stack, and (6) trace distance weighting. Modifications of methods and improved designs of apparatus are presented.</p><p>Results of particulate organic carbon (POC) analyses from 1971 through 1977 show that concentrations in North San Francisco Bay (estuary) typically decrease from the delta of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to Golden Gate (seaward). Median winter (November through February) concentrations decrease from 85 to 30 <span>µ</span>g-at./L seaward. During March through October, median concentrations are higher and ranges are wider. Concentrations frequently exceed 250 <span>µ</span>g-at./L in the upper estuary.</p><p>POC concentrations in South San Francisco Bay are highest at the southern reach. It extends across the boundary between, and includes parts of, the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal Plain physiographic provinces. The rocks in the Piedmont are mainly intensely folded sericite schist and granite gneiss containing irregular masses of amphibolite and feldspathic biotite gneiss and scattered igneous intrusive rocks. Most of the crystalline rocks are thought to be of Paleozoic age, but some of the intrusive rocks may be younger. The crystalline rocks are cut by a major unconformity and are overlain by sedimentary formations ranging in age from Cretaceous to Miocene. The valuable kaolin deposits occur in the Cretaceous beds, undivided, and in the Huber Formation which is of Paleocene to middle Eocene age. The resources of kaolin in the district are estimated in millions of metric tons as follows: reserves, 100; subeconomic resources, 700 to 900; undiscovered resources, probably 700 to 1,000. \r\n\r\nIn addition to kaolin, the leading mineral commodity mined in the district, crushed stone and sand are now being produced, and fuller's earth and a minor amount of limestone were formerly produced. The crushed stone is quarried from igneous rocks in the Piedmont province. The sand is washed from the Cretaceous beds, undivided. Organic carbon values are single determinations except where two values (duplicate analyses) are given. Each well is identified by county, well name, and API number.
