Loss of iron and impregnation of sandstone by carbonate cements and replacement of gypsum by calcite are the major alteration phenomena at Cement. The bedrock alterations are partially masked by unaltered overlying beds, thick soils, and dense natural and cultivated vegetation. Interpreters biased by detailed ground truth were able to map the alteration zone subjectively using a magnified, filtered, and sinusoidally stretched LANDSAT composite image; other interpreters, unbiased by ground truth data, could not duplicate that interpretation. \r\n\r\nSimilar techniques were applied at a secondary test site (Garza oil field, Texas), where similar alterations in surface rocks occur. Most samples were collected from mineral-rich springs probably related to hydrothermal systems of various ages. Two sets of data were obtained, the first based on the chemical composition and physical and chemical properties of spring and ground water, and the second based on the chemical composition of mineral precipitates deposited by radioactive springs. Multivariate statistical analysis of the water data suggests four major geochemical factors affecting the 23 parameters measured. These factors were labeled as total dissolved solids, alkalinity, temperature, and Fe-U concentration. Multivariate statistical analysis of the precipitate data suggests five factors affecting the 32 element values measured. These factors were labeled as mineral contamination, Mn precipitation, Fe-As-Be precipitation, heavy metals precipitation, and Ba-Ra precipitation. \r\n\r\nRelative intensities of the geochemical processes represented by the factors were computed using factor scores. Sample localities were ranked on the basis of relative intensities, and the five localities with the highest intensities were selected as being the most favorable for more intensive exploration for uranium. The areas potentially affected, consisting of 22 coastal states and Pennsylvania, can be grouped into four major areas: Alaska, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific. The Alaska Area has three lease sale areas: Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea and the Chukchi and the Beaufort Sea (see Figures I and 2).</p><p>Most of the information used by both the government and industry on the hydrocarbon potential of the Alaska Area is initially acquired and compiled on a regional basis. These data are used by industry in nominating tracts for lease and in preparation of bids and by the Department of the Interior for general sale area identification, tract selection, environmental impact statements and resource evaluation. These data presented in two tables, are part of the basic data required for glacier dynamic analysis, computer models, and predictions of the number and size of icebergs which Columbia Glacier will calve into shipping lanes of eastern Prince William Sound. A metric, sea-level coordinate system was developed for use in surveying throughout the basin. Its use is explained and monument coordinates listed. A series of seven integrated programs for calculators were used in both the field and office to reduce the surveying data. These programs are thoroughly documented and explained in the report. The target was the crest of a diapiric salt mass and the overlying, deformed caprock. The interpretations reveal an undulating salt surface with as much as 80 meters of relief. The minimum depth of about 165 meters is near the location of three holes drilled by the U.S. Department of Energy for the purpose of evaluating the Salt Valley anticline as a potential site for radioactive waste storages Caprock properties were difficult to estimate because the contorted nature of these beds invalidated a geologic interpretation in terms of velocity layers. Only hydroelectric power and coal were listed as sources of energy indigenous to Korea in the report of the 1967 World Energy Conference. Small reserves of thorium have been estimated and the discovery of uranium was reported in 1977 (A. W. Noonan, Jr., U.S. Department of State, written commun., 1977). Petroleum, natural gas, and geothermal energy sources possibly exist in South Korea, but their potential for development is not considered to be great. About 55 percent of the energy in the Republic is produced from petroleum, most of which is imported as crude and is refined in-country. Domestically produced coal supplies about 32 percent of the energy demand, hydroelectric power about 4 percent, and other sources (firewood, charcoal, and dung) about 9 percent. South Korea's latest energy program stresses construction of additional hydroelectric power installations, increased production of coal, initiation of energy production by atomic reactors, onshore and offshore exploration for petroleum and natural gas, generation of energy by tidal power, and energy savings through conservation (R. A. The dissolved-oxygen reduction is due only in part to the municipal-waste discharges which enter the river. In addition, concentrations of pesticides have been reported consistently at one long-term station on the river, and trace metals have been reported at two long-term monitoring sites.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an intensive study of the L'Anguille River basin during the summer and fall of 1978. This study was done in cooperation with the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology to fulfill the requirements of section 208 of Public Law 92-500. An assessment of the general water quality was made, the causes of stream-dissolved-oxygen reductions were determined, and the occurrence of pesticides and trace metals in the basin was documented. A steady-state, segmented, dissolved-oxygen model was calibrated and used to project simulated dissolved-oxygen profiles.</p><p>Pesticides are used extensively in the basin and their occurrence in streams throughout the basin is documented. Concentrations of DDT from the river were as high as 110 micrograms per kilogram in streambed material, whereas 1,600 micrograms per kilogram of DDE and 530 micrograms per kilogram of DDD were found in bottom-feeding fish. In addition, toxaphene concentrations of 45 micrograms per kilogram were found in streambed material and concentrations of 3,400 micrograms per kilogram were found in fish.</p><p>Concentrations of iron and manganese, at times, exceeded recommended limits for human consumption. Also, dissolved solids, chloride, and sulfate occasionally exceeded the water-quality standards set by the State.</p><p>Streambed materials consist of deposited sand, silt, clay, and organic matter. The respiration of bacteria, fungi, and benthic invertebrates, which feed on the organic matter, accounts for most of the dissolved-oxygen reduction in the river. The sources of the streambed materials include municipal wastes, agricultural fertilizers, fluvial sediment, and natural organic matter. Model projections indicate that a reduction of 60 percent in the streambed-oxygen demand would allow the stream-dissolved-oxygen concentrations to remain at or greater than 5.0 milligrams per Thirty-nine sites in 1977 and forty-one sites in 1978 were sampled to determine snow depth, density, structure, and snow-soil interface temperature. In addition, snow surface wind indicators were examined over most of NPRA. In April and early May of two consecutive years, the snow cover in NPRA was thin, wind-packed, and virtually continuous. The depth and water equivalent of the snow generally increased with altitude and with distance from the coastal plain. Snow depth on tundra ranged from less than 0.20 m (meters) near the coast to more than 0.90 m in parts of the Brooks Range. Snow density was relatively high in areas where wind slab was developed throughout the snowpack, and lower where there was less wind slab. In 1977, the coastal plain showed the greatest wind slab development and higher densities, averaging 310 kg/cu m (kilograms per cubic meter) on tundra, while the mountains and foothills had less wind slab and lower densities, averaging 270 kg/cu m. In 1978, with more local variation, snow density on the coastal plain averaged 330 kg/cu m on tundra and averaged 310 kg/cu m in the mountains and foothills. Water equivalent of the snowpack in 1977 ranged from less than 0.10 m in the coastal areas to more than 0.25 m in the Brooks Range, and averaged nearly 0.12 m on tundra for the entire area. Water equivalent of the snowpack averaged more than 0.13 m in 1978. Snow-soil interface temperatures in 1977 ranged from about -20C on the coastal plain, where the snowpack was thin and ambient air temperatures were low, to about -5C in the mountains and foothills where the snowpack was thicker and ambient air temperatures higher.
