These zones range from 0.5 to 1.75 km in width and from at least 10 km to more than 50 km in length. The individual thrust faults within each zone occur in 'staircase-type' folds and are at a low angle to bedding. Although each individual fault may have 0nly centimeters to displacement, many of these individual faults appear to exist within the six zones. We believe that the stress that produced that Valley and Ridge folds to the south was largely dissipated in faulting in the Williamsport Valley. This dissipation of the stress would explain the presence of only broad open folds to the north on the Allegheny Plateau. The extreme faulting in the Williamsport Valley along with the unique 'staircase' and 'reverse staircase' structures may result in fracture porosity traps at depth.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791604","usgsCitation":"Pohn, H.A., and Purdy, T.L., 1979, Thrust fault zones in the Allegheny Plateau of north-central Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1604, 16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791604.","productDescription":"16 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142956,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1604/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38527,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1604/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b832","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pohn, Howard A.","contributorId":66681,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pohn","given":"Howard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161847,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Purdy, Terri L.","contributorId":87950,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Purdy","given":"Terri","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161848,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The coal beds are mainly in the lower 150 feet (45 m) of the Fruitland Formation. Coal resources--measured, indicated, and inferred--with less than 400 feet (120 m) of overburden in the site are 69,085,000 short tons (62,660,100 metric tons), 369,078,000 short tons (334,754,000 metric tons), and 177,803,000 short tons (161,267,000 metric tons) respectively. About 68 percent of these resources are overlain by 200 feet (60 m) or less of overburden. The apparent rank of the coal ranges from subbituminous B to subbituminous A. The primary purpose of that investigation was to provide the geohydrological understanding needed to predict the impact of potential phosphate industry operations in the forest on the natural hydrologic system. The investigation involved test drilling, implementation of a hydrologic monitoring network, water-quality sampling, comprehensive aquifer tests, and literature study. The numerous data obtained from the field investigations, laboratory analyses, and published and unpublished sources were published in summary form in an interpretive report (Miller and others, 1978, Impact of potential phosphate mining on the hydrology of Osceola National Forest, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations 78-6, 159 p.). This report is an index to the type, source, location, and availability of the data used in the interpretive investigation. The report indexes the following water-resources data: geological, geophysical, ground water, surface water, quality of water, meteorological, climatological, aquifer tests, maps, photographs, elevations, and reference publications. The report also describes the manner of storage and retrieval of the data.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79984","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Forest Service","usgsCitation":"Seaber, P.R., and Hull, R.W., 1979, Water-resources data index for Osceola National Forest, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-984, iv, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79984.","productDescription":"iv, 42 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402596,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_30425.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":402488,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0984/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143265,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0984/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Osceola National Forest","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.68310546875,\n              30.211608223816906\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.188720703125,\n              30.211608223816906\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.188720703125,\n              30.51494904517773\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.68310546875,\n              30.51494904517773\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.68310546875,\n              30.211608223816906\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b06e4b07f02db69a342","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seaber, Paul R.","contributorId":67492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seaber","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hull, Robert W.","contributorId":81492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hull","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162512,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The presence of these thrusts, along with reported anomalous dips along the leading edge of the next syncline to the south (the Bernice or Barbours syncline) may indicate that the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania is underlain by master decollement and that this decollement gives rise to a series of splay thrusts. Mapping on seven Landsat images in an area of about 100,000 km2 reveals that lineaments are best developed along azimuths of N. 60° E. to N. 90° E. and N. 30° W. to N. 60° W. Although their exact structural nature and origin are not known, these features are visualized as major zones of weakness that subdivide the crystalline Precambrian basement into discrete blocks. Several of the most prominent surface lineaments can be related to basement faults. The blocks bounded by these lineaments constitute low-relief uplifts that define the southern margin of the Williston Basin.

During deposition of the Upper Cretaceous Pierre Shale, lineaments were the sites of tectonic activity. Members of the Pierre are relatively continuous throughout the area and are well dated by biostratigraphic zonation. The base of the Mobridge Member is the highest structural datum available for regional mapping. Northeast-trending surface lineaments near the White and Cheyenne Rivers have a clear expression on a subsurface structural map of this horizon. The Ardmore Bentonite Bed lies approximately 300 m (980 ft) below the Mobridge; subsurface structure contours on this datum show the active lineaments trending northwest. Isopach maps of two rock-stratigraphic units between the Ardmore and Mobridge reflect the shift in tectonic activity from early northwest sets of lineaments to later northeast trends.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791374","usgsCitation":"Shurr, G.W., 1979, Upper Cretaceous tectonic activity on lineaments in western South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1374, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791374.","productDescription":"24 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425664,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1374/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142468,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1374/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"western South Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              42.99574707263821\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.13052274433691,\n              42.99574707263821\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.13052274433691,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.20182321394218,\n              46.083750905164635\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a24e4b07f02db60e4b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shurr, George W.","contributorId":78741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shurr","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162611,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Seven of 36 dredge hauls that sampled outcrop contain argillaceous rocks with more than l percent and as much as 1.64 percent organic carbon. Some of the rocks in samples of probable early Eocene age have undergone a thermal history that has resulted in generation of hydrocarbons. The organic matter appears to be hydrogen deficient, however, which could indicate that the rocks are more likely to be a source of gas rather than liquid hydrocarbon, unless the hydrogen loss is due to weathering. \r\n\r\nThe Eocene rocks are associated with sandstone and conglomerate on the continental slope. They dip northward beneath younger Tertiary strata in the outer continental shelf where they could be an important petroleum source and exploratory target.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79295","usgsCitation":"Plafker, G., and Claypool, G.E., 1979, Petroleum source potential of rocks dredged from the continental slope in the eastern Gulf of Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-295, 20 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79295.","productDescription":"20 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143258,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0295/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38521,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0295/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db68736a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Plafker, George","contributorId":3920,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Plafker","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161823,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Claypool, George Edwin","contributorId":99972,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Claypool","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"Edwin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161824,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This study will investigate the potential effects of large-scale surface mining of peat on the hydrology and water quality of Upper Red Lake and the Tamarac River. The major aspects of the study are the characterization of the surface-water and groundwater hydrology and water quality, including the trace-metal content of the peat. Data will be collected to construct two- and three-dimensional digital models to simulate the movement of ground water and its relation to surface water in the peatlands, streams, and lakes. The report summarizes all strong-motion accelerograph records recovered from the August 6, 1979 Coyote Lake earthquake. The majority of accelerograms were recorded at stations operated by the OSMS-CDMG and USGS; the latter organization operates a network of instruments that belong to various federal agencies. Documentation of strong-motion data for the Coyote Lake earthquake best serves the scientific community if presented as a single data set.
\n
Reasonable precautions have been taken to ensure the accuracy of the material presented; however, the preliminary nature of the report makes it subject to change upon further verification. These faults are the Hosgri fault, the Offshore Lompoc fault, and smaller unnamed faults. Faults trending offshore from the adjacent shoreline such as the Pezzoni, Lions Head, Honda, and Pacifico faults, do not show post-Wisconsin activity. \r\n\r\nThe Hosgri fault trends directly toward the coastline between Purisima Point and Point Arguello where it appears to merge with folds and smaller faults in the western Transverse Ranges. This trend of offshore structures toward the Point Arguello-Point Conception area is consistent with a hypothesis that the regional structural fabric of the southern California Coast Ranges and its adjacent offshore area merge with the Transverse Ranges.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr791199","usgsCitation":"Payne, C.M., Swanson, O.E., and Schell, B.A., 1979, Investigation of the Hosgri fault, offshore southern California, Point Sal to Point Conception: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1199, Report: iv, 17 p.; 4 Plates: 41.96 × 58.54 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791199.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 17 p.; 4 Plates: 41.96 × 58.54 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":405956,"rank":7,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_11077.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38463,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38462,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38461,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38460,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38459,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142532,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1199/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Point Sal to Point Conception","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.992,\n 34.348\n ],\n [\n -120.365,\n 34.348\n ],\n [\n -120.365,\n 35.077\n ],\n [\n -120.992,\n 35.077\n ],\n [\n -120.992,\n 34.348\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4813e4b07f02db4da23d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Payne, C. The profiles are located on the slope and rise between Cape Hatteras and the New England Seamounts and include 10 profiles which are roughly perpendicular to the continental margin and 4 long profiles which are parallel to the margin. Single channel seismic reflection profiles are available on all of the profiles indicated on the accompanying figure with the exception of FAY 21-5 and FAY 21-10. Approximately 5,850 km of seismic reflection data were collected.
