The catalog contains 18 tables. Tables 1-4 are arranged alphabetically by constituent or schedule, and where available, include parameter name, unit of measurement, lab code or schedule code, applicable range and precision of the method, parameter code, method number and name, and a page index. Tables 1 and 2 list inorganic and organic constituents determined in water samples, table 3 provides information on determinations of chemical and physical properties of sediments, and table 4 lists biological determinations. Page references in these first four tables refer to the tables of determinations (tables 5 through 8) or to the tables of calculations (tables 9 through 12). Constituents that are found in more than one category are cross-referenced (e.g. nitrogen, organic is found in the inorganic table and is cross indexed in the organic table).</p><p>Tables 13 through 16 list sample containers, sample preservations, and sample designations for each determination. Table 17 lists materials (bottles, preservatives, standardized solutions, and so forth) which may be purchased from the Central Laboratories. Table 18 lists agency codes which can be used to indicate the agency collecting or analyzing samples. Although the catalog is being released now, its effective date is September 11, 1979 to September 10, 1980. The water analyses included the common anions and cations, oxygen-18, deuterium, and several minor elements. Actual temperatures of the sampled thermal waters ranged from 23° to 49°C. Estimated aquifer temperatures, as derived from geochemical thermometers, ranged from 45° to 145°C based on silica concentrations and 45° to 205°C based on sodium-potassium-calcium ratios. Using the cation thermometer, two analyses indicated aquifer temperatures that were lower than the actual measured temperatures. Estimated temperatures using a mixing-model method ranged from 205° to 320°C, the higher temperature being of questionable value. The different methods used to estimate aquifer temperatures showed little correlation. On the basis of isotope data, the warm waters may be of local meteoric origin and have not been heated enough to react significantly with the aquifer rocks, or they originated as precipitation at high altitude and great distance from the area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79687","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy","usgsCitation":"Crosthwaite, E., 1979, Chemical analyses of ground water related to geothermal investigations in the Teton River area, eastern Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-687, i, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79687.","productDescription":"i, 14 p.","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":403546,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0687/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":141705,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0687/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Teton River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -111.912434,43.755291 ], [ -111.912434,43.962399 ], [ -111.591358,43.962399 ], [ -111.591358,43.755291 ], [ -111.912434,43.755291 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4a9c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crosthwaite, E. This record provides data concerning faunal changes in the Upper Arm, and also permits reconstruction of fish sizes and growth rates based upon scale remains. Four tables are presented that provide data on sample numbers and their frequency of occurrence and identification of skeletal and scale remains, and the reconstructed lengths and weights of Tule perch (<i>Hysterocarpus traski</i> Gibbons) based upon remains of the scales of this species. A fifth table presents the mean reconstructed standard lengths and mean ages in years B.P. for slugs 1 through 24, 0-18.3 m. These data provide a unique data base for examination of paleoecologic and paleoclimatic trends in the North Coast Range of California through the Holocene and late Pleistocene. The major geographic features included in the area are the Wasatch Plateau, Book Cliffs, San Rafael Swell, Price River basin, and a small part of the Green River basin (pl. 1). The area is defined by approximate drainage-divide boundaries in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs, by an arbitrary boundary on the south, and by the Utah-Colorado State line on the east.</p><p>The Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs area includes all the operating coal mines in Utah in 1978. Annual coal production in the area is expected to increase from the current (1978) rate of about 8 million tons to as much as 30 million tons within the next 10 years (J. W. Moffitt, U.S. Geological Survey, oral commun., 1978). Ground water is an important source of water supply in the area. As mining increases and mining-related municipalities grow, many sources of ground-water supply may be subjected to increased demands and possibly degradation of chemical quality.</p><p>Waddell, Vickers, Upton, and Contratto (1978) reported some ground- water data after a reconnaissance of part of the area. The purpose of this report, which was prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, is to present a more detailed compilation of ground-water-related data that were collected and compiled during October 1976 to March 1978. The report is designed to make the data available in an orderly and usable form for local and regional water managers and other users of water data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr79915","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Sumsion, C.T., 1979, Selected coal-related ground-water data, Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs area, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-915, Report: iv, 25 p.; Plate: 32.38 in. x 25.50 in., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79915.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 25 p.; Plate: 32.38 in. x 25.50 in.","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":143132,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39193,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39194,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0915/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Book Cliffs, Wasatch Plateau","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685bd6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sumsion, C. In general, the effects of exploration on erosion are minor, although erosion may be accelerated by the building of access roads, by activities at the drilling sites, and by close concentration of drilling sites. Areas where the greatest effects on erosion and sedimentation from mining and milling operations have occurred are: (1) in the immediate vicinity of mines and mills, (2) near waste piles, and (3) in stream channels where modifications, such as changes in depth have been caused by discharge of excess mine and mill water. In the northern Adobe Range, where the entire Permian sequence is approximately correlative with the Phosphoria Formation, it is 200 m thick and averages 1.7 percent P2O5 . In the southern Adobe Range, the Permian sequence is more than 1,700 m thick, and the upper half which is roughly correlative with the Phosphoria Formation averages more than 2 percent P2O5. Some thin beds in rocks of Permian age contain more than 20 percent P2O5. \r\n\r\nPhosphatic rocks of the Adobe Range were deposited in shallow water among islands in the western part of the epicontinental Phosphoria sea. The continental margin and the open ocean lay far to the west. At the same time, the Phosphoria Formation was being deposited in the eastern and central parts of the Phosphoria sea. Theories based on the work of Kasakov done in 1937 relating phosphate deposition directly to sites of upwelling oceanic waters are questioned. Nondeposition of diluent materials such as detritus and carbonate is probably of more importance in producing phosphate in economic concentrations than is geographic position with respect to upwelling waters.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79239","usgsCitation":"Ketner, K., 1979, Phosphatic Permian rocks of the Adobe Range, Nevada, and their environment of deposition: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-239, ii, 11 leaves :map ;28 cm.; (14 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79239.","productDescription":"ii, 11 leaves :map ;28 cm.; (14 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153166,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0239/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49101,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0239/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adee4b07f02db6876b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ketner, Keith Brindley","contributorId":18332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ketner","given":"Keith Brindley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The patterned effect of the roughness was obtained by clear-cut mowing of designated areas of an otherwise fairly dense coverage of coastal Bermuda grass approximately 250 mm high. All experiments were conducted in the Flood Plain Simulation Facility during the period of October 7 through December 12, 1974. Data from 18 steady flow experiments and 10 unsteady flow experiments are summarized. Measured data included are ground-surface elevations, grass heights and densities, water-surface elevations and point velocities for all experiments. Additional tables of water-surface elevations and measured point velocities are included for the clear-cut areas for most experiments. One complete set of average water-surface elevations and one complete set of measured point velocities are tabulated for each steady flow experiment. Time series data, on a 2-minute time interval, are tabulated for both water-surface elevations and point velocities for each unsteady flow experiment. All data collected, including individual records of water-surface elevations for the steady flow experiments, have been stored on computer disk storage and can be retrieved using the computer programs listed in the attachment to this report. Measurements of thermal gradient in the upper few tens of meters generally are sufficient to outline the major anomalies, but it is always desirable to combine these gradients with reliable estimates of thermal conductivity to provide data on the energy flux and to constrain models for the heat sources responsible for the observed, near-surface thermal anomalies. The major problems associated with heat-flow measurements in the geothermal exploration mode are concerned with the economics of casing and/or grouting holes, the repeated site visits necessary to obtain equilibrium temperature values, the possible legal liability associated with the disturbance of underground aquifers, the surface hazards presented by pipes protruding from the ground, and the security problems associated with leaving cased holes open for periods of weeks to months. \r\n\r\nWe have developed a technique which provides reliable 'real-time' determinations of temperature, thermal conductivity, and hence, of heat flow during the drilling operation in unconsolidated sediments. A combined temperature, gradient, and thermal conductivity experiment can be carried out, by driving a thin probe through the bit about 1.5 meters into the formation in the time that would otherwise be required for a coring trip. Two or three such experiments over the depth range of, say, 50 to 150 meters provide a high-quality heat-flow determination at costs comparable to those associated with a standard cased 'gradient hole' to comparable depths. The hole can be backfilled and abandoned upon cessation of drilling, thereby eliminating the need for casing, grouting, or repeated site visits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr79593","usgsCitation":"Sass, J., Kennelly, J., Wendt, W., Moses, T., and Ziagos, J., 1979, In situ determination of heat flow in unconsolidated sediments: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-593, v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79593.","productDescription":"v, 71 p., 4 sheets :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59576,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fae4b07f02db5f41ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sass, J.H.","contributorId":70749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sass","given":"J.H.","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":204162,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kennelly, J.P.","contributorId":16051,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennelly","given":"J.P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204159,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wendt, W.E.","contributorId":60248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wendt","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204161,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Moses, T.H.","contributorId":24344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moses","given":"T.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204160,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ziagos, J.P.","contributorId":77931,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ziagos","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":204163,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Transforming photographs into maps is a relatively slow and expensive process which for many critical steps defies automation. A satellite offers the unique advantages of greater stability and uniform velocity over an aircraft. A sensing system in space can now provide imagery of mapping quality even though a continuous electro-optical imaging system is used instead of a mapping camera with its inherent high geometric fidelity.</p><p><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr79914","usgsCitation":"Colvocoresses, A.P., 1979, Geometric considerations for an automated mapping satellite system (Mapsat): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-914, 9 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr79914.","productDescription":"9 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408670,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0914/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142087,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/0914/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c5ad","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colvocoresses, Alden P.","contributorId":72779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colvocoresses","given":"Alden","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":157649,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
